A/N: This is just an Epilogue I quickly pieced together in order to give A Needed Quest a genuine ending. Regarding the complete story, is this the end? Of this particular tale, I'm sad to say it is. As I stated in the previous chapter, I am considering making a sequel. Hell, I'm already working on a prequel. By the way, you should take the time to check it out, so long as you've watched Overlord and Doctor Who.
Since this is (probably) the last chapter I'm making, I would like to ask those who made it all the way through the story from chapter one to now to please leave me a review and let me get a look at your thoughts concerning the story. What'd you think as a whole? Did you not like certain chapters compared to others? Did you think certain areas were lacking? This is vital information, as it will allow me to improve my overall writing skills.
Act II is out now!
Epilogue: Needed Nor Wanted
And so the same Courier who was always so prideful on the fact that she was never once forced to recoil from a fight. The same one who never once showed reluctance when it came to facing a supposedly unstoppable enemy and anyone else that was foolish enough to engage the Companions, chose the only immediate option. She chose to abandon Remnant and its people, wishing she was stronger all the while. Thus, once more, the Mojave, and now Remnant, were changed.
The Legion, even while still continuing to suffer from the lingering effects that came with losing Hoover Dam to the mighty NCR a second time, was successful in establishing control over Vale and all those who failed to escape alongside the Companions.
Small resistance pockets would attempt to fight while the Legion annexed several cities. But these small struggles would prove pointless. With no support to aid in the fight against the new Legion, most resistance pockets were captured or annihilated.
Even with the superior technology the military possessed, Atlas, a military organization Six assumed no one could stand a chance against, were in fact the ones who could not stand a chance against the Legion's seemingly endless numbers and the scorched earth tactics they implemented.
As soon as the Legion secured its first cities, civilians numbering in the thousands were crucified. Then more were executed, then more, and more. And then Remnant's people slowly started to realize the slaughter would not cease anytime soon.
Remnant's remaining Kingdoms, all shocked to get involved in such a surprising and inhumane conflict, still continue to fight against the Legion's forces. Though Atlas and the Kingdoms manage to acquire impressive victories against the Legion, weakness starts to show more and more as the war rages on.
Entire cities and other important territories eventually fell to the Legion. In that moment it was clear that the only chance Remnant possessed at victory lied with the Courier, who prior to returning to Vegas, promised Ruby and everyone else that she would return to Remnant and find a way to free it from the Legion at all costs.
It was a promise she would not easily to make good on. Thanks to Cinder and Torchwick, the Legion possessed even more men than the NCR, BOS, and the Great Khans's combined. Even with the Courier's Securitrons acting as support, which numbered a little over 2,000, even she was smart enough to understand they could never free Remnant with no additional support.
The only immediate option Six possessed, other than to launch a suicide operation, was to remain inside the Lucky 38 with the other Companions, old and new. There she would continue to think over new ideas concerning ways to continue improving Vegas and the Mojave's offensive capabilities and formulate strategies against the Legion. Knowing the answer to victory was somewhere in the Mojave, Six continued the search.
Boone, who would always be remembered for his contributions to the NCR for years to come, was buried not far from Rex's grave. Ruby, who now wears his beret, offered to return it to his body. The Courier refused, saying that it shouldn't go to waste. Boone would not be avenged until the last Legionnaire was dead.
Arcade Gannon, positive the only the Companions can gain the victory over the Legion is to start creating new technologies, would leave Vegas and his Enclave equipment to travel to Big Mountain. Always glad to get a new visitor who wasn't just some Cazador who managed to get past his Robo-scorpions, Mobius gladly provided all the equipment necessary to Arcade's projects. Towards the start, Arcade's results were promising.
Despite the positives, Arcade's absence would soon prove to interfere with Freeside's overall security. Crime and chaos soon increased since there was no Power Armoured Companions patrolling the area. Eventually, more Kings and Securitrons were sent out to make sure the local population remained safe. Aside from Six, Boone's loss affected Arcade the most.
At last realizing his old age and condition was only going to worsen and continued stress would soon cause the inevitable transformation to a Feral Ghoul, Raul was regretfully forced to retire from the Companions indefinitely. Even though the Lucky 38 provided comfort, companionship, and a nice cool temperature, Raul would opt to return to his shack to spend his last years.
With a new purpose, Chalk returned with Joshua to Zion. Bringing his own men along, Chalk would personally conquer several more roaming tribes, taking captured men in as new warriors. To win a fight you will always need soldiers above all else. Brave men and women who are willing to fight and give everything to serve a cause. Chalk and Joshua would continue to train even more Dead Horses, Sorrows, and would eventually resort to requesting tribute from outside tribes.
At the Courier's request, and since no additional Old World traces remained within the Divide, Ulysses would agree to remain in Vegas alongside the Companions. Once Caesar's greatest scout, Ulysses would spend most nights with Six and NCR Officers, attempting to figure out the perfect way to initially strike the Legion.
Dean Domino, entertainer, singer, and professional criminal, was fortunate enough to endure no noticeable changes in his regular life. Even though his combat skills are nothing special, Dean still wants to join Six when she leads the Companions in the fight against the Legion. Of course, Dean wasn't going to assist with the actual invasion. He was going to focus on... repossessing valuables the Legion stole or could potentially steal. Give 'em a pass. Habits aren't an easy thing to lose
Cass, Whiskey Rose, the Black Widow, was quick to propose the idea she remain in Vale to act as an advisor to make sure the fight against the new Legion stayed strong and didn't end too soon. Six, not willing to lose a second loved one so soon, rejected the suicidal idea. When the fight comes, the Companions will all need to fight it as one force.
Team RWBY, team JNPR, and many other teams that manged to evacuate, took full advantage of the New World around them. Some took the opportunity to research the Mojave's connection to the Old World. Others wanted to impact the New World itself. But most chose to continue the Academy's training so they could eventually get strong enough to stop the Legion's attack.
On the Legion topic, Beacon's potential Huntresses and Huntsmen would regularly venture all the way to the Lucky 38 to speak with Courier Six, usually seeking guidance or information concerning the Legion's potential weaknesses.
Ruby Rose was given a unique opportunity. To fill in the spot to a lost Companion. Thousands in Vegas would cling to the chance to join the Courier in travels across the Mojave. Which is why many were confused and infuriated when some small child got to fill the spot instead.
Honored, team RWBY's leader was glad to accept the new position. Armed with the Crescent Rose and now always wearing Boone's special Beret, Ruby would continue to prove that she was a valuable asset to the Companions.
Coco and Velvet were still filled with sorrow. This sorrow only worsened when they were informed that Fox and Yatsuhashi, the two other students in team CFVY, failed in an attempt to escape from the Legion while also escorting several civilians to the exit.
Hope wasn't something Coco took very seriously. Even so, she and Velvet prayed that wherever Fox and Yatsuhashi were, they were somewhere safe and, more importantly to Coco, showing the Legion they weren't going to get an easy victory.
Lily, who, even with Six returning to Vegas, refused to leave the Mojave Outpost, possibly in an attempt to find something, was confused as to why there was a sudden increase in refugee camps. These camps were located all across the outer Mojave and a few surrounding areas. These camps were under Securitron protection and always received regular supply shipments. It wasn't anything comparable to Vale. But Six figured she could make these people whose lives she ruined as comfortable as she possibly could.
Lily considered taking the long walk all the way to the Lucky 38. Even though she would always forget someone's name, she missed Six and the others. In the end, Lily opted to remain at the Mojave Outpost, still feeling inclined to, the reason remaining unknown.
Thanks to the new fighters, Red Lucy, the Thorn, and now Westside would thrive. To some, Westside was now a more secure place than Freeside or Novac. However, obtaining new warriors also comes with the need to find more creatures to slay. Six, who promised Veronica to limit time spent in the Thorn, or more specifically, around Lucy, was still willing to capture and send tribute to the Thorn.
With his mission now complete, Malcolm returned to the now Legion controlled Vale, where his comrades were eagerly awaiting his arrival. For his service as an implanted operative, his previous crimes against the old Legion were all forgiven, and reentry into the Legion's ranks was once again permitted to Malcolm. Wanting nothing more than to rejoin his old comrades, Malcolm accepted, and would quickly rise to the Frumentarii status.
The Boomers made the promise to assist Six in anyway possible. Obviously, one must take into account moving even a single Howitzer into uncharted territory isn't as simple as one might think. Still, when the time to invade inevitably comes, the Boomers are not going to miss it.
With the BOS's cousins in Boston obtaining even more power as every consecutive night passed, the Mojave's Brotherhood found the need to expand more and more across the Mojave. In fact, they were even given permission from the Courier to create a separate embassy in Vegas, which caused a nice increase in recruitment.
Obviously, this was all against the NCR's wishes. But Six was finished caring about what the corrupt and foolish thought. When NCR representatives eventually came to confront Six about the BOS's sudden presence in Vegas, Six's only response was to remind them who commanded a Securitron army.
Unable to waste so many troops against Six's forces, and still eager to see what use she could provide, the NCR would allow the embassy. Now possessing more territory and influence in the Mojave, the Brotherhood were now focused on more "pressing" matters.
After accepting the Courier's proposal she made whilst evacuating the city, Veronica and Six were officially married. Almost everyone on the Strip would attend the ceremony. Some popular attendees included General Oliver Lee, President Kimball, the King, Red Lucy, all Companions who remained in the Mojave, Coco and Velvet, and team RWBY and JNPR. The White Glove Society still idolized Six, as she was the only one willing to waste so much precious time to stop the "small" cannibalism problem that was once plagued the Ultra Luxe. And so they were more than willing to plan the wedding inside the Ultra Luxe.
Everyone cheered as they witnessed the two legends rejoice in the the common love Six and Veronica shared. And this time, Six, a little more mature now, promised Veronica she would maintain this still stained relationship. She would give Veronica all the love she possessed, and more.
Before retreating to the Mojave, the Courier made sure to retrieve one vital item. One that would allow the first positive change to the Mojave since Six and the NCR established control over it. It was the file containing the plan Cinder created.
Of course, Cinder's plan included the Legion and the White Fang marching on Vegas and taking it through violence. Then the same with Hoover Dam, the NCR's Mojave Outpost, Novac, and so on. She couldn't save Remnant. But Six was at least proud to earn the Mojave a little more time.
After returning to the Sierra Madre with a small force to secure the area, and also making sure to greet Christine and Dog/God one last time, the Courier was ready to transport the Madre's advanced technology all the way to the Mojave.
These technologies included the vending machines, which would provide Vegas with nearly unlimited resources, the Holograms, which would act as greater security than any Securitron could, every single Auto-Doc, excluding the one Six found Christine locked inside, along with anything else that looked shiny.
Six never once considered the idea Father Elijah proposed. Weaponizing the Cloud? What nonsense. She would never stoop to a level as low as utilizing chemical warfare. Not like the Legion, who made it clear they were not above using such tactics. Luckily, Elijah's corpse was still rotting somewhere inside the Madre's vault. And even though she was previously told about Elijah's fate, Veronica would never find out who caused the Elder's passing.
The Sierra Madre's complete story, a story shrouded in mystery, carnage, evil, and manipulation would inevitably fade away when Dean, Six, Christine, and Dog/God all passed away. The full story would never get shared, no one eager to relive it.
Christine, finished watching over the Madre, especially now that the last Ghost People were long gone and only the Cloud remained, made the choice to physically leave the Sierra Madre. Her soul though, that would never get to leave.
Christine wasn't going to return to the Mojave alongside Six. She told the Courier she was still needed elsewhere. Apparently there was some action involving the BOS in Chicago and everyone outside Boston and the Mojave was expected to show.
Something about investigating Elder Maxson's latest reports coming from the Commonwealth. The same Commonwealth where the only other living New World legend resided, the infamous Sole Survivor, Director of the Institute and General of the Minutemen.
The Courier appreciated the risk Christine was willing to take in sharing information that was more than likely confidential Brotherhood intel. Six gave Christine the Codac R9000 in the event they ever saw each other again. Six always wanted to get a glimpse at Chicago.
After saying one last goodbye to Christine, Six would return to Vegas and commence the long and fragile operation to improve it in ways only the scientists at Big Mountain saw as possibilities. But as strong as the changes now were, as much as they increased the odds on succeeding, the Companions, Six, especially understood all too well it simply was not enough to win against the Legion on its own.
Because even with Vegas's vastly superior technology, even with so many Soldiers that stand at its side, and even with so many new and eager Recruits willing to sacrifice themselves so long as it can provide them with even the smallest chance to liberate Remnant and save Vale's people from the Legion, no one can ever truly predict any war's possible outcomes. And war... war never changes.
