Everything hurt.
Their ears were ringing.
But they were alive, at least.
That was all Stevonnie could say for themself as they awoke in a golden bubble to quickly popped. They got up and made their way to the ship to find it was completely busted aside from the audio systems, which Sadie was talking through.
"Hear…? I'll… find… you, wait-!"
"Sadie?! Are you still there?!" Stevonnie asked in worry, tapping the display. "She said she'd find us! We just gotta wait here… Wherever… here is."
They were on a beautiful moon that looked dry and barren of life besides the massive herbaceous growing like trees around them.
They saw in the sky a planet that appeared to be sucked of life, drilled through
"Mmm…!" Stevonnie whimpered in slight panic, holding themselves. "What do we do now? That was our best chance. We can't fix the radio, the ship's beyond hope, no one knows where we are..! What do we do?!"
As if in response, there was a rustle from a nearby bush. They grabbed their shield off their back in worry, setting it in place to defend themself only for a tiny blue creature that looked like some kind of rhino beetle to spring out at them.
Stevonnie threw it off before taking out their sword as the creature screeched at them. "An alien!"
The fusion saw it coming and quickly sliced it in two. They winced when the two halves fell to the ground and was about to walk up when the head half suddenly started to shake, and then sprouted new legs. The creature hissed at them again before retreating.
"Uh… Glad they're okay!" Stevonnie smiled nervously before their serious side took over. "If life can thrive here, then so can I! I've just gotta hold out til Sadie comes for me! Until then…" They stabbed through the abandoned half. "We survive."
Over the next few days, Stevonnie used Connie's skills and Steven's upbeat attitude to survive. They gathered fruit, cut down trees for shelter, and found a nearby, safe-to-drink-from stream which they shared with a giraffe-like creature. Eventually, they set up a shelter among the rocks with all of their supplies to stay safe from the rain. They used a broken window piece of the ship as a mirror one morning to shave off a slight stubble they had with their sword, being very excited and proud of themself because of it, they were growing up.
Later, around dinner time, they reached out their hand to a small bird creature with wiggly arms.
"Come on, we have to! We ran out of energy bars!" Stevonnie cried.
"But it's so cute!" Stevonnie whined, stopping themself.
"But we need the protein for a healthy diet!" Stevonnie insisted.
"There has to be another way! We can just take the fruit. Fruit's good!"
Suddenly, a shadow fell over them, making them turn to see a giant version of the creature, most likely it's mother. It roared at the fusion, sending them scampering away from safety, skidding down a hill before seeing a towering structure with a glass dome at the top, covered in vines. They debated if it was safe for only a moment before the bird blob found them. The tower was safer than out here!
Stevonnie ran to it, leaping over roots and branches before barely managing to slide in between the almost-closed doors. The creature suddenly stuck its beak in, chomping at the air. When it realized Stevonnie escaped, it gave a few huffs in anger before storming off.
The teen glanced around the room, seeing it was also full of herbaceous like the rest of the planet, it was dimly lit, abandoned. But for some reason, Connie had this strange feeling that Stevonnie voiced: "This place… feels familiar…"
They suddenly heard the bird blob's terrifying screech and winced. "Guess I'm camping here for tonight…"
After setting up a nice fire and tying up their tarp as a hammock, Stevonnie flopped down and gave a sigh. "Finally."
"Goodnight, Stevonnie!" Stevonnie whispered gently..
"Goodnight, Stevonnie…" Stevonnie sleepily responded.
"Sweet… dreams…"
In their dream, they found themselves to be in Greg and Steven's van. They had their fists clenched for some reason. "… I'm back home…?"
They looked down to see they had a phone on them, Steven's phone. They slowly scrolled through the list of contacts on it but was confused to find it all to be gems merely listed by facet number.
They suddenly heard a shattering sound and wiped around in shock only for Stevonnie's view to suddenly be split.
One was in the strange moon base they'd fallen asleep in, sitting on a throne with their hands clenched while the other was walking towards a door.
Connie was the one sitting on the throne, now the correct, giant size of it. She frowned, seeing a cracked window in her base. She rolled her eyes before going back to work. That silly gem had broken it in her temper.
The door opened then and she turned to see Steven, who was the same height as her, before quickly turning away.
"How's it going…?" Steven asked gently, peeking over her shoulder.
Connie sighed, rubbing her eyes in exhaustion before turning to him. "You saw her leave?"
"She was in quite the touchy mood, yes." Steven chuckled, looking slightly worried. He walked ahead while Connie tried working still, but found it difficult to focus with him looking so bummed.
"What is it?"
"Why can't she have a planet? I think it's time!" Steven smiled.
Connie grimaced. "She's too irresponsible and childish to harvest correctly."
"Oh, but maybe that's just the reason she needs one! It could teach her responsibility and it would make her so happy…!"
Connie thought it over as Steven pulled her up out of the chair.
"And what about you-know-who?"
Steven smiled. "She thinks it's a splendid idea, the only one not on board is you."
"I'll… think on it."
"Of course!" Steven laughed lightly before hugging her. "Thank you, Yellow…"
Yellow Diamond, in the form of Connie, gave a tired nod before glancing at the cracked window. She walked up and Steven followed. "I just hope I'm not making a mistake, Blue…"
In the reflection behind her wasn't Steven, but a beautiful woman with pale blue hair and ocean-blue skin. Blue Diamond smiled back at her. "Even if you do, we'll face it…"
"Together."
Stevonnie woke up gently before sitting up, putting a hand to their chest to feel the warmth of their diamond. Steven and Connie had been separate nearly the whole time in that dream except at the end… Stevonnie had said the last line. It didn't make any sense to them why they would dream with their components separated like that, they were supposed to be together as one, it was so confusing.
"What was that?" Stevonnie asked.
"A dream… or maybe a memory…" Stevonnie mumbled softly, hugging her knees close. "But, out of all the places why…. here…?"
They trailed off when they turned and caught sight of a familiar, tall mural they'd seen before of a strong woman holding many planets around her.
"Mother… Yellow Diamond…" Stevonnie murmured in awe.
They saw a hatch open on the celling next to the mural and climbed through after scrambling up some branches to find another familiar sight, a floating orb. It was covered in vines, but Stevonnie recognized it. "This is a moon base… like Earth has."
They found another hatch and vaulted up there as well. There was a giant chair overlooking the broken, holed-out planet Stevonnie had noticed before. They saw the same exact window from their dream and walked up, gently feeling the spiderwebs of cracks with their fingers. She looked back to the planet. "This was… one of Mother's colonies… She destroyed all life on that planet… was just finished giving an extermination order when the window broke…"
The fusion shook their head. "… Your mom changed though."
"Yeah… Right after the shattering."
Blue Diamond had looked so beautiful, been so gentle with Yellow even if she didn't need to be. She loved her sister Diamonds more than herself, Stevonnie somehow knew. If only she had such compassion for different species than her own, it wouldn't have ended so tragically…
"Wait, we were communicating in the dream so… yes!" Stevonnie cried in relief, seeing a diamond-shaped screen hovering over the chair. They hoisted themselves up and pulled the pad down by the vines wrapped around it. "Please work for me!"
They pushed away a vine to see the crest of the Diamonds: a white diamond on top of a yellow and blue one, ending in pink.
Stevonnie was semi-suprised to find her hands were already moving, Yellow Diamond must have entered the password many times. White, yellow, blue, pink, white again.
The screen changed to show a diagram of the planet which was swiped past. "Nope…"
A study of the bird blob. "Nuh-uh."
They then stopped in surprise. It was a picture of a gem that looked somewhat like Pearl, or rather, she was a Pearl. She smiled smugly at the camera with Yellow Diamond working in the background, oblivious to it. Judging by her color, gem placement, and closeness… she had to be Yellow Diamond's Pearl, right?
"It makes sense Yellow Diamond had a Pearl but..." Stevonnie mumbled to themself. "Why had I never heard of her?"
They flipped to the next screen to see a feed of the Comet Cascade and gasped in delight when Sadie appeared on screen, giving orders.
"We have to find them! We have to!" Sadie cried.
"Sadie! Sadie, I'm here!" Stevonnie cried, getting her attention.
"Stevonnie! Thank goodness you're okay, trace that signal!" Sadie beamed to them.
"I'm so glad to see you!" The fusion sighed in relief.
"Same here."
The sweet moment was interrupted by a sudden thudding up the window and they turned to see the creature from before. It screeched at them before pecking at the glass, cracking it.
"Sadie, we're in trouble, please hurry!"
The prayer was answered immediately with the Comet Cascade roaring into the atmosphere. The ship fired at the creature but it managed to hop away before leaping off the tower. It's bottom half suddenly unfurled like an umbrella and it floated down to the ground safely.
Stevonnie sighed in relief while Sadie laughed slightly. "You're welcome! Now, you guys ready to go home?"
"More than anything." Stevonnie breathed. They turned to the broken window one last time and walked up to see their reflection was cracked straight down the middle, but still in one piece. "… We'll figure this out one day, alright? Together."
