The youngest Diamond gazed at the planet Earth far away with wonder and turned to look up at her. "There's so much life down there…"
"How would you happen to know that?" Blue Diamond asked sternly.
"Hm? Oh, uh, the Quartz soldiers who recently emerged down there, they told me about it." She explained hurriedly. "I wouldn't dare go down there myself."
"Be sure you don't… It does no good to be attached. The first thing she ever taught us was that organic life is full of imperfections, better to snuff it out then let it contaminate our Homeworld." Blue muttered.
"How dangerous can pathetic lifeforms down there really cause us?"
The two turned and Blue smiled. "Yellow…"
She walked forward to the others before gazing down at the Earth as well. "I still feel unsettled with you holding a colony, Pink."
"You're just jealous because she's going to give me even more attention!" Pink Diamond smirked, nudging her.
"Who would be jealous of that? You can have her."
Blue hid a snicker, always aware they could be watched.
Yellow smiled back before bringing her close-
Yellow stood on a grassy hill, surrounded by flowers-
Blue Diamond looked nervous, clasping her hands together in worry-
Two Pearls, one yellow, one blue stared up in surprise as they departed without them-
Blue Diamond waved goodbye to Yellow as she slipped into some white fortress-
A shadowed figure grabbed Yellow Diamond's equally shadowed companion-
Yellow's sword was drawn-
Connie awoke with a cry in shock. The sound of shattering crystal rang in her ears and she placed her hands to them to block it out but couldn't, it lasted a few more minutes before fading away. She gritted her teeth in anger, flopping her head back on her pillow. Even the wave noises couldn't keep the dreams away anymore. "I understand, brain, my mother was involved in the shattering!"
She rolled on her side to see the sword she always kept at her bedside just in case. What battles had it seen? Could it truly have been used to shatter Blue Diamond or were they right by confronting Pink for it, she had the means and the motive…
Yellow Diamond had a strained relationship with Blue Diamond given their opposite sides.
But Pink… It seemed she'd had a great relationship with Blue Diamond. If she was the shatterer, that had to be a lie. There had to be some thread of hostility. If Connie knew that… her mind would be alright with believing she truly did it and finally give her some peace and quiet.
"Too bad nobody knows her true self…" She mumbled to herself. Her true self… Her eyes then widened, remembering.
Pearl's eyes shot open at the loud pounding at the barn door.
"Who izzzit…?"
"I'll check, don't worry about it." Pearl chuckled before sliding open the door. "Oh! Connie! It's the middle of the night, are you okay?"
Meowlon woke up then and stretched, almost accidently scratching Amethyst's face before she plopped down sleepily to see the visitor, Amethyst following soon after throwing off her purple sheets.
"Pearl! I had a dream about the Diamonds on the Moon Base so I need you to come with me to the Moon Base and tell me everything you know about Pink and Blue Diamond!" Connie cried a bit too loudly.
"Why?" Amethyst groaned, crossing her arms. "They were both dictators who didn't care about their gems, you know that."
"I actually don't…" Connie huffed. She then looked to Pearl with diamonds in her eyes. "Please, Pearl, you're the only one who knows about Pink Diamond as much as Peridot does about my mother! I just need to know what she was like before the shattering. Then, maybe I could finally have some peace…"
Pearl glanced at Amethyst worriedly.
"Where do I even begin?" Pearl sighed softly as they walked up the stairs to the throne. "Pink Diamond didn't have me formed before Yellow Diamond's betrayal so all I know is second hand but her Pearl is quite an honest gem, she can be trusted…"
"When Pink Diamond first emerged, she was beloved by all her subjects as well as her fellow Diamonds. She was kind, caring, and threw the most magnificent balls…"
Connie imagined Pink Diamond blooming out of a flower bud to the delight of the other Diamonds and the little Diamond happily greeting her subjects.
"At first, she was content with her life of luxury, playing with her Spinel, tending to her garden, watching her people dance, and of course, visiting with her fellow Diamonds. Blue Diamond was the most openly caring to her, they sang together, played games, and talked for what seemed to go on for decades about anything and everything. However…"
Pink Diamond sat beneath the three other Diamonds but they soon vanished, leaving her alone.
"Blue Diamond eventually had to return to her work, unwillingly neglecting her. It could be resentment for Blue was growing with each passing day in Pink's abandoned state, hatred for leaving her behind, but no one was too sure, not even her Pearl. She was that good at hiding it all behind a smile."
"As the years passed, Pink Diamond became bored and eventually decided her next course of action would be to colonize planets like the others. She begged and begged, easily wearing down two, but your mother had reservations. Despite this, they eventually did give her a planet, Earth."
Pink Diamond held the Earth greedily between her hands and cracks appeared upon it.
"After that… Yellow Diamond came to love the Earth even more so then Pink who had a zoo installed for the inhabitants. It all went like a blur for everyone, the shattering, it was so sudden and unexpected. In that singular second… the Diamonds all changed. Pink Diamond became the sole representing leader of Homeworld. You know the rest of the story after that, wanting to fight Yellow on her own, Pink Diamond disguised herself as Rose Quartz…"
The perfect picture Connie had of the Diamonds cracked, revealing their new natures, Pink Diamond in agonizing grief and hatred, Yellow Diamond solem and remorseful, Blue Diamond… gone, and the lead Diamond, well, nothing was known about her.
Connie was silent for a moment or two as they sat quietly on the throne. "I'm not sure what to believe anymore… It still sounds like either my mother or Pink Diamond could've done it. I thought if Pink had some sort of motive it would confirm she was the one and finally end the mystery, but it just left me even more confused…"
"Pink Diamond was not a good gem by any means, Connie, but in my opinion, if it isn't biased, I don't think she'd do it." Pearl whispered. "If she was the shatterer, why would she be so bent on talking to Yellow Diamond instead of just destroying her? And how could she have been grieving for so long? She's a magnificent actor but I think even she would grow tired of such a straining role. But that's only my opinion, it could be quite wrong given she tricked me before."
Connie nodded and turned to thank her but was suddenly face to face with a dark shadow, the silhouette of Blue Diamond.
"What…?" The girl asked, stepping away only for a outline of her mother to walk past her.
"This has gone on for long enough, Yellow. Pink will stop at nothing to colonize the Earth, and you know I have to continue supporting her, so my answer is no."
"If you won't do as I ask, then you know too much about this, about me." Yellow Diamond's fist clenched before she stomped up to Blue Diamond in a seeming rage. "I'm sorry, Blue, but you will have to forever hold in that secret…"
Connie's eyes widened, wondering if she was about to see the terrible deed done.
The two suddenly embraced though.
"I'm going to miss you while you do." Yellow whispered, her voice tight. She clasped Blue's hand one last time before turning and walking away.
The girl released a breath she didn't even know she was holding before she was suddenly passed through by another shadow, one that looked so familiar it made herself feel sick. "P-Peridot…?"
The triangular-shaped head of Peridot glanced to her, revealing it was indeed her, the gem that raised Connie and was with Yellow Diamond since the beginning.
Connie felt her heart drop into her stomach.
Peridot was holding the sword. The sword that people had seen shatter Blue Diamond.
"No…"
She slowly unsheathed it before pointing it up to Blue Diamond's back.
"No, no, no! I-It isn't you!"
Peridot slammed it into the Diamond's chest and she heard a terrible shatter.
"It can't be you!"
Pearl grabbed onto Connie before she could fall to the ground, shaking her slightly. "Connie! You zoned out, are you-?!"
"It can't be her… T-This is so much worse, I…"
"Connie…" She held the girl for a few moments after she went silent.
Connie looked up, brushing the tears away. "I have to talk to Peridot… It's time to solve this mystery, once and for all."
