"Was it all a lie?"
Shayera could hear the despair and accusation in his tone. She turned to face him and she immediately saw the doubt that overshadowed his expression. The doubt he now had in her. She wanted to look away. She wanted to just curl up in a small ball and just disappear. She wanted to wake up and find out this had been all one giant nightmare.
Calming her nerves, she finally replied, "I love you, John. I never lied about that."
Shayera tried to sound as heartfelt as possible. She had never lied about her feelings for him. She never could lie about her feelings for him. Even now she couldn't.
'Tell me to stay. Say you still love me. Say you hate me. Say anything to me John,' Shayera mentally pleaded to herself as she resisted the urge to swallow the lump growing in her throat. She knew if she did so then nothing would be able to stop her from crying. She wasn't going to allow herself to cry. At least not in front of him.
With silence as her only reply, Shayera finally turned her back to Wayne Manor and John Stewart. She just as quickly spread her wings and pushed off of the ground. All she heard was the wind rushing around her. Never once did she hear a word come from the Green Lantern she left behind. She was tempted to glance over her shoulder but she remained strong-willed and kept her focus linear.
Feeling she was far enough away, Shayera finally swallowed and she found that she couldn't stop the tears that began to stream down her face. He didn't try to stop her. He didn't say anything to her. He hated her.
Shayera squinted as the setting sun before her blinded her already blurry line of sight. She was flying aimlessly over the ocean. She didn't have a destination nor would she have one. She had nowhere to go. She had no one to go to. She had just turned her back to the only family she ever had. She had just turned her back to the love of her life. She now had absolutely nothing. She was nothing.
For the first time in a long time, Shayera Hol was utterly lost.
