A/N: Hey, everyone! I know, It's been forever since I've last updated. I'm almost finished with my Senior year of High school (Thank goodness) that has been such a disaster for me! I FINALLY have straight A's from working my butt off and have been working aside with my part time job! Now that I have some spare time, I've decided to update this story! I thank you all SO much, and I know I NEED to accept your requests and I will! If you wouldn't mind telling me in a review or a PM I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks! :D
Disclaimer: I do NOT own Final Fantasy VII or any of it characters! All rights go and belong to Square Enix! :) I also did not make up the Midnight Game, It is a creepy-pasta ritual, and NO I've never played it and never will, I'm afraid of my own shadow! XD
~The Midnight Game
It was after midnight, way past their bedtime but the two children were having one of those nights where they couldn't find that comfy spot and spent hours tossing and turning. After sometime Marlene turned on her side to see Denzel staring back at her.
"Can't sleep?" Denzel whispered softly.
Marlene shook her head, but then realized that Denzel probably couldn't see her in the darkness so she whispered back.
"No!"
"Shh!" He hissed then lowered his voice. "You have to keep it down, or Tifa's going to be really mad!"
"Sorry...why can't you sleep?" Marlene replied, making sure to keep her voice down.
She stared up at the ceiling, that looked like a dark and endless pit above her.
"Too many scary stories..." Denzel replied, his voice a bit faint."Have...have you heard of...the Midnight Game?"
"The Midnight Game?" Marlene shook her head. "No, I'm afraid not...what's the Midnight Game?" She asked her brother in the darkness.
Denzel sighed and rolled over on his stomach, hugging his pillow close to his face.
"I don't think I should tell you, Marlene..." He replied.
Marlene sat up slowly and looked at Denzel, who looked nothing more than a big blur in gloomy lighting of their bedroom. "Oh? And why NOT? You already told me about the game, you might as well tell me on how to PLAY it!"
"Trust me, Marlene! You don't want to play the Midnight Game...it's scary and it's dangerous, nothing like the other games we like to play."
"Oh?" Marlene laid back down, her eyes locked on Denzel's silhouette.
"Tell me, Denzel! I won't play it...I just want to know HOW! How can a game be scary and dangerous?"
Denzel sighed again. "You sure you want to know how to play the Midnight Game, Marlene?"
"Yes!"
"You won't tell Tifa? Or Cloud? No matter how much it scares you?"
She shook her head. "Nope!"
"Okay...the Midnight Game has many rules...and one of them requires you not to play it."
Marlene giggled. "That's a silly rule!"
Denzel sighed impatiently. "Do you want to know how to play, or not!?"
"Yes! Yes! Yes! I really do! I'm sorry! I'll listen!" Marlene proposed, pulling her blankets up to her chin.
"Okay...so the Midnight Game is actually a ritual used for punishment, for those who have done very bad things...most pagans follow this ritual."
Marlene had to stop him there. "What's a 'Pagan' Denzel? I'm sorry to interrupt but I don't know what a 'Pagen' means!"
"Pagen is a type of religion Marlene." Denzel explained. "Now, there is a high chance of...death when you play the midnight game...and an even higher chance of permanent mental scarring, that's why they recommend you DON'T play the Midnight Game, Marlene."
Marlene nodded. "Go on..."
"To play the Midnight Game, there are things that you will need. A candle, a piece of paper, something to write with, a lighter, matches, a wooden door...and...and a drop of your own blood..."
"Ew!" Marlene shuddered and hugged her teddy bear close to her. "Blood!? Why would you need your own blood to play the game Denzel!?"
"You'll find out in a moment, now..if you plan to play the Midnight Game with people they will have to have their own materials as well and you will all have to follow the certain steps to play the-"
"What are the steps!?" Marlene interrupted Denzel once more.
"I'm getting to that, Marlene! Be patient!" Denzel sighed before continuing.
"The first step, is to write your FULL name on your piece of paper. Yes your first, middle, and last name and put a drop of blood on the paper...allowing It to soak it."
"What happens if you write someone Else's name?" Marlene asked.
"I'll get to that later, Marlene. Please stop interrupting me!" Denzel said with a sigh.
"Okay! Sorry!" Marlene whispered meekly.
"For step two, you have to turn off every light in your house or the place that you are doing the Midnight Game. You must go to your wooden door and place your piece of paper that has your name on it and set it at the front of the door. Then, you light your candle and place it on top of the paper. " Denzel continued. "Step three, you must knock on the door twenty-two times exactly and it MUST be midnight upon the final knock! Then open the door and blow out your candle, and then close the door. This allows the "Midnight Man" to enter your home."
Marlene gasped quietly and hugged her teddy bear tighter, she held her word to Denzel on keeping quiet, but she couldn't understand how someone could be so foolish to play such a game!
"Are you ready for step four, Marlene?" Denzel asked.
"Yes...what's step four!?" Marlene replied.
Denzel cleared his throat. "For step four, you MUST immediately relight your candle...it's very important because this is when the game begins! You must walk around your house, that's now completely dark...with your lit candle in your hand for light. You must avoid the Midnight Man until three-thirty-three am! IF your candle ever goes out, that means that the Midnight Man is close by you. To protect yourself from him, you have to relight your candle, and you only have ten seconds to do so!"
"What happens if you c-can't relight your candle in ten seconds?" Marlene whimpered, she was now starting to get afraid.
"Then you will have to circle yourself with a circle of salt!" Denzel replied then blushed. "Ooops! I forgot to add that material in at the beginning! I'm sorry!"
"It's okay...now tell me what happens next!" Marlene replied.
"If you fail at both of these actions, then...the Midnight Man will create a hallucination of your biggest fear while he rips out your organs...one after the other...you will feel it but you won't be able to react to it!"
"Denzel!" Marlene shrieked, feeling tears well up her eyes. "I don't want the Midnight Man to take out my organs!"
"Don't worry, Marlene. The Midnight Man won't get your organs as long as you don't fail at relighting your candle or putting salt around you!" Denzel assured before moving on. "If you succeed in creating the circle of salt around you, you have yo stay in the circle until it's three-thirty-three am! But if you are able to relight your candle, you may continue with the game and you will have to continue until three-thirty-three am without being attacked by the Midnight Man or trapped in your circle of salt is how you will win the game! The Midnight Man will leave your house at three-thirty-three am and you will be safe. However, there are things that could go wrong if you play the Midnight game."
"Like what?"
Marlene was shaking like a leaf now. She never thought that a game could be this scary!
"Well...some people say that if the Midnight Man is near you, the temperature will drop causing you to see complete darkness...and you may even see a dark figure whispering your name..if that happens you must leave the area to be safe from the Midnight Man! You must NOT sleep during the Midnight game. You must NOT use another person's blood on your name. You must NOT use a lighter as a substitute for a candle because it won't work, and you must NOT attempt to provoke the Midnight Man in anyway! Even when the game is over, the Midnight Man will always be watching you...an-Hey! Marlene? Where are you going!?"
Denzel watched his sister as she sprang out of bed, grabbing her pillow and stuffed bear. She turned to look at Denzel.
"I'm going to tell Tifa about the Midnight Man!" She replied before racing out of their room.
"What!? No! Get back here, Marlene! You promised not to tell! Marlene!" Denzel called out for his sister, but it was obvious she wasn't coming back. Looks like Denzel had the room to himself tonight and that he'll be expecting a very long talk with Tifa in the morning...
