Chapter one Re-write
Shinji leaned back into his seat on the train, his S-DAT player feeding his ears with music. He was about to meet his father again, for the first time in many years. He hadn't really wanted to, but like Ashley and Andros once told him, he couldn't live in fear. He had to get over it; he was so tired from being afraid of the unknown.
Reaching into his bag that leaned into the seat next to him, he retrieved two black, gold, and silver wrist devices. Shinji strapped them onto both his wrists and smiled. The devices gave him courage, as they always did, reminding him that, no matter what happens today, he'd always have a home and a purpose.
Too bad that after today, a change of residence would be necessary. He felt the train stop, breathed in and sighed; this was it. Collecting his belongings, the boy made his way out of the train and made his first step in years in the city of Tokyo-3. It had been a decade ago that he had been forced away, discarded by his father as a useless person, a nonentity.
Looking around, he saw that not much was there, as the streets were deserted, and not a single soul in sight, the very area was empty. A few minutes later, Shinji heard loud noises.
Turning in the direction he heard the noises coming from, Shinji spotted a giant, green behemoth taking down the military planes attacking it. He didn't have much time to stare…as a purple-haired woman signaled him to get in a car she was driving. After a few minutes and several miles later, Misato Katsuragi took the time to examine the boy she was sent to pick up.
He dressed in an almost-black outfit with a green t-shirt with a short-sleeved, black, button-up shirt. But underneath, she could tell he had a lean, muscular frame…and what really caught her eye were the two devices on his wrists. Before she could even ask him anything, he spoke up.
" You work for my father, right?" Shinji asked, getting a nod from the woman. "Figures, the old man calls me out, but yet doesn't have the guts to show his face and opts for some lady instead. How droll."
In response to that remark, Misato made the car do a full 360, sending him to the press against the door. After he regained his vertical base, he shot a glare at the woman, who now sported a pair of binoculars and was looking out at the something in the city.
She cursed loudly yelling, "TAKE COVER!"
Outside, a large explosion was seen, heard, and, unfortunately, felt as the car was flipped over with them still inside it. As the smoke died down, the two got up to their feet. Both Shinji and Misato stared at the damage done to the area and their means of transportation. The boy turned to Misato with an annoyed glare.
"You mind telling me what was that?" He demanded of her. Misato chuckled, bringing her hands in front of her chest as if to ward off any hostile feelings he had towards her.
"An N2 mine. Honestly, I had no idea that would happen," chuckled Misato.
Misato then turned back to the area, wondering what she could do with no transportation. Then, she heard some grunting.
CLUNK!
Misato whirled around and stared. Shinji was standing where the car was tipped, only to find it back on all four wheels again. She stared in astonishment and wondered just how strong he was, since he sure didn't look it.
Shinji on the other hand was thinking,
'Thank you for the strength training, Danny Delgado, Iron Bison'
Several minutes later found the two with the car repaired by duct tape and running off some stolen batteries back on the road. Shinji was looking out towards where the giant monster stood.
"There might be one thing we have that can stop it, so we should hurry," said Misato as she sped up.
'And if what you have doesn't work, then I'll be more than happy to step in,' thought Shinji as he looked at his black and silver wrist devices.
Eventually, the car reached the train that led to Tokyo-3. As soon Misato's car was loaded on the train, it took off for an underground location.
"So, this NERV, huh?" Shinji asked.
"Yes, NERV. It's a secret organization that ties directly to the UN. You sound like you don't think too much of your dad." Misato told him.
"That's an understatement," Shinji replied, thinking of the ways he'd like to pound on his father. Misato decided to drop the subject and start a new one
"So, did your dad send you an ID card?" She asked, getting a nod from him. Before he could ask any questions, he suddenly found himself in a humongous cavern.
"So, this is a Geo-Front? Nice." Shinji commented, knowing he'd been to other, impressive places. "What's with the giant pyramid?"
"That's NERV Headquarters. That's where we're going." Misato revealed.
(Sometime later)
"We're lost, aren't we?" Shinji asked Misato.
"We're not lost. I know where I'm going, kid," replied Misato to him.
She had found an elevator and decided to take a different floor with Shinji. As he was getting agitated, he wanted to destroy that thing ASAP. Soon, the elevator reached its destination and the door revealed a very upset Ritsuko Akagi.
"Oh! Hi, Ritsuko." Misato greeted, embarrassingly.
"Misato, we're short on time. How did you manage to get lost?" The woman exasperated.
"Uhhh…"
"She had a map with her the entire time," added Shinji snidely, and then he saw Ritusko's choice of clothing…and raised an eyebrow.
'Interesting choice of attire,' he thought. Catching the look on his face, she covered herself up in her lab coat, blushing.
"Is this the Third Child?" She asked.
"According to the Marduk report, yes," Misato answered.
'Third Child? It seems there's more to this than I first let on.' Shinji thought.
"The name's Shinji. Good to meet you." He greeted her.
'His personality sure is different. After his abandonment, he should be a major basket case,' thought Ritsuko. "Good to meet you, too." The trio boarded the elevator and took to the floors.
A few minutes later, the elevator reached its destination and the trio walked began to walk down a corridor with the two old ladies bickering, Shinji noted words like "Unit-01", "Oni" and about activating it. Though he sensed there was more. He decided to ignore it and form a strategy should he and his Torozord face the invading Angel. They soon reached a room where it was pitch black.
"Why is it so dark?" Shinji asked. Suddenly, the lights turned on, and before the boy was some sort of mechanical monster. It almost made Shinji desire to morph right on the spot, but upon closer inspection, it looked familiar to him.
"This is our multipurpose, humanoid fighting machine, Evangelion," Ritsuko introduced it to Shinji
'Humanoid? This thing looks anything but human. It looks like that fishface monster that the Galaxy Rangers fought years ago,' he thought. "So, this what Gendo was working on?"
"Yes," answered Ritsuko
"I'm not impressed. This thing is ugly," said Shinji with disgust in his voice
"Hey! This thing is our only hope!" Misato retorted. Before Shinji could reply, he felt he was being watched. Looking up, he saw his father looking down on him through a bullet-proof glass.
"So, coward, you finally show your face," he stated, unaffected by his glare. Misato felt the tension in the room heat up as there was no love at all between the father and his son. To make matters worse, Ritsuko wanted Shinji to pilot the Eva with no training. It only got even more heated with the Angel advancing to their position.
"So, you want me pilot this thing and destroy that "Angel" out there? Even though there's a slim chance of it working? I think you're crazy!" Shinji shouted. Misato and Ritsuko stood there stunned; Shinji just insulted the commander without any fear.
"Give me one good reason why?"
"There are three, actually," Gendo replied coldly. "One: If you don't, humankind is doomed. Two: Only you can do it, and Three: If you refuse, we will use a replacement."
Before Shinji could retort, he saw a door open from the opposite side and someone being wheeled in a wheelchair. In it, was a blue-haired girl in very bad shape. Anger coursed through the boy's body.
"You Son of a Bitch!"
His father was going to make her do it or use her as a bargaining chip against him. Suddenly, there was a huge rumble and some debris began to fall from the ceiling. Shinji reacted quickly. With incredible speed, managing to cover the distance thanks to his training, Shinji gathered up the blue-haired girl. But something unexpected happened: The Eva moved its arm to block the debris from falling on the two. Everyone in the room was astonished.
"That's not possible! How could it move on its own without the entry plug!" Ritsuko exclaimed
"It reacted without any sort of interface…or was it protecting him?" Misato asked, she thought to punish Shinji for taking such a suicidal risk later. Shinji's main concern was the girl he saved.
Looking down he asked, "Are you okay?" Ignoring the pain she was feeling, Rei opened her eyes to look up at her savior and nodded in reply that she was fine.
"Just lie down," Shinji told her softly, as the medics came to tend to her. Shinji stood up from his position.
"All right, I'll do it," he declared, looking at his father.
You know I would have said 'yes', even if you didn't pull this type of stunt, but this only confirms what I've known all along: You're gutless coward," Shinji remarked. Gendo just glared at him for the remark. As soon as Shinji was loaded, a strange, orange liquid started to fill the plug up.
"What the heck?!" Shinji shouted.
"Don't panic. Once the LCL liquid fills up your lungs, it will give you oxygen while you're in there. You'll get used to it in time." Ritsuko's voice reassured him of the communicator.
'Alright, focus. Ignore the putrid smell of this thing. Remember what Adam taught you,' he thought. From the bridge, everything was almost ready.
"Prepare for launch!" Misato gave the order.
Soon, Eva's restraints were released and it as placed on the launch platform.
"It's ready for launch," said Maya.
"Roger," Misato replied. "Eva Launch!"
(Above ground Tokyo-3)
'Okay, let's see what this piece of junk can do. Personally, I'd like to morph and call out Torozord and fight off that thing.' Shinji thought.
"Shinji, try thinking of walking," instructed Ritsuko.
"Walking?" Shinji repeated, and he focused his thoughts on walking, and then Eva took a small step.
'So, my thoughts are tied into this thing, eh? Then, why don't I show that coward and his minions what I'm all about!'
Focusing his thoughts, Shinji willed the Eva into a fighting stance (think Tommy's fighting stance). Shinji then willed the Eva for a sudden spin kick, staggering the Angel, taking it by total surprise.
(Back at the headquarters)
"Ritsuko, you sure he's had no training?" Misato asked, turning to her friend in shock at what she was seeing.
"That's what his file said," responded Ritsuko, also in awe of what's she was seeing.
Though Gendo didn't show it, he was surprised and irritated. His son was keeping secrets by the way he made the Unit move it seemed he was trained. But by who? Fuyutsuki, however, was having a weird sense of déjà vu. The way Unit-01 was fighting seemed like something he hadn't seen in a very long time.
"Can it be?" was all he could say.
( Above Ground)
Shinji still kept on the attack on the Angel hitting it with everything he had.
' Alright, the way this is going, I may not need Torozord after all,' thought Shinji However, the Angel fought back, blocking a punch from Shinji, and then pushed it away. Then the Angel grabbed Eva's head and lifted its body off the ground. Shinji tried to move his left arm to defend, but the Angel grab it and began to pull on it, feeling the intense pain.
Ah!" He screamed. 'On second thought, I just might.'
The angel then tossed the Unit into multiple empty buildings, knocking out the systems within, but Shinji manages to remain conscious, while the systems were blinking in and out briefly before failing completely
(Back at HQ)
The bridge was scrambling when the tide of the battle had turned towards the Angel's favor
"How is Eva's defense system?" Ritsuko asked Maya.
"The signal's not working!" Maya replied.
"The field has not developed!" Another tech by the name of Makoto went.
"It's not?" Ritsuko asked.
They all watched as the Angel ripped the Eva's arm right off. Shinji could be heard yelling in pain.
"Head damage!" Makoto shouted. "The nerve controls are snapping, one after another!"
"No response from the pilot!" Shigeru added.
"No! Shinji!" .Misato shouted.
(Up above In Unit 01)
In the Eva, all systems were offline darkening the plug. Everything but the life support systems were shutting down. The only visual Shinji had was the Angel coming his way.
"Hello? Can anyone read me?" Shinji called out to NERV as the Angel advanced on him.
"All systems are down and no one can hear or reach me…perfect." "
"Now, it's Morphin' Time! Magna Power!"
He repositioned his arms, moving his right wrist to reveal key in the device. Then, he inserted it into the device on his left wrist, causing it to light up. Then, a green aura engulfed Shinji filling the entry plug. The aura died down, revealing Shinji to be clad in black armor with gold around the shoulders and the waistline where his Sword/Blaster was.
The armor had a green hexagon in the center of the armor, complete with a red and black cape and on his head was a helmet with a visor with a gold line at the crown with a green gem with two horns on both sides.
He had become the Magna Defender, one of the galaxy's greatest protectors. Now morphed, Shinji had teleported himself out of the Eva to face the Angel. He knew he couldn't beat it as he is now. But he had an edge against enemies larger than most skyscrapers.
"Torozord! Charge!" He shouted, calling upon his cosmic ally.
(Back at NERV)
Misato stared on, helplessly at the screen, as the Angel kept on advancing on Unit-01. She knew Shinji wasn't ready, she just knew he wasn't. Now, they were about to pay the price. The ultimate price: Extinction.
"RAWR!"
An animal roar of rage broke her dark thoughts, and the next thing she knew, the Angel was suddenly impaled in its stomach and tossed onto the ground by something large and mechanical.
"What on Earth is that?!" She cried, staring at the large, mechanical beast on the screens that just appeared from out of nowhere.
"It can't be," whispered Fuyutsuki, staring into the screens in shock. 'It's been so many years.'
"No way," went Makoto, adjusting his glasses. "I read the stories about things like that, but I didn't think they were actually true."
" Do you know what that thing is?" Misato asked him.
"A colossal, fighting machine known as a Zord," Misato turned to see it was the Sub-Commander who answered her question, as he was also in shock at what he seeing; all the while the commander turned to him and frowned.
"We're in for quite a show."
(Above ground)
The large, mechanical beast faced off against the Angel, stomping its hooves and with its horns poised for the Angel, charged at the beast again, only for itself to be pushed back by its large horns. The mechanical animal roared and went to his master.
"Alright, Magna Defender, transform!" Shinji shouted as he turned his back to the mechanical beast. Two beams of red light were emitted from the beast's eyes, projecting onto his master causing him to change and grow to giant size.
The Magna Defender was no longer clad in all black armor, but now clad in red and black armor, minus the cape and sword. Now, just about the exact size as the Angel itself, Shinji turned and leaped onto the back of the beast, ready to attack.
"Let's go, Torozord!" He ordered, and the beast charged at the enemy.
The Angel quickly reacted by, quite literally, grabbing the bull by its horns. It tried to wrestle the bull, but found itself outmatched in strength.
Then, the Angel raised its left arm and struck the beast atop its head, causing it to stagger backward. The Defender quickly leaped off, producing a pair of lance-like swords and struck at the Angel a few times, trying to knock it off balance, and eventually knocking it to the ground. Unknown to anyone, Unit-01 seemed to be observing the battle, despite it being inactive.
( With NERV)
"This is unbelievable!" Ritsuko gasped, observing the battle.
"Are there any more like him?" Misato wondered, watching the unknown begin slashing at the Angel.
"I've only heard stories about a group of heroes like, but they all vanished long ago before Second Impact," explained Makoto
'But now, there's a chance that they'll come back after all,' thought Fuyutsuki, still watching the battle.
Gendo, on the other hand, was disturbed by this turn of events, as SEELE would demand an explanation for all of this, the boy wasn't suppose to be defiant and strong-willed. Unit 01 has yet to fully awaken, like it was supposed to. This wasn't in his plans. And now this appearance of a mysterious entity further complicated matters.
'This is all wrong!' thought Gendo walking back to his office
"I must turn this to my advantage, before it gets out of further control."
(Above ground)
After delivering another slash that knocked the Angel down, the Defender heard a child crying.
Seeing that the Angel was incapacitated for the moment, the Defender had decided to search for the source of the crying, eventually coming upon one of the buildings the Angel had destroyed earlier on, and there, amidst the rubble, was a little girl whose leg was under a big chunk of cement.
Mika! Mika! Where are you?!" A male voice shouted. The Defender turned to see the source of the voice. It was a boy, about the age of his human form, in what looked like a tracksuit. He stopped at the sight of the giant, looking scared almost to death. The Defender removed the rubble and gently scooped the girl into his massive, right hand.
The girl was scared at first, but then she could feel the warm light radiating off of the Defender, which soothed her. Then, the Defender bent down on one knee and put his hand that had the little girl out towards the boy.
"Big brother!" The girl cried happily, as she was taken by the boy, who turned out to be her older brother, and he looked up at the Magna Defender.
"Thank you," he said with a smile.
The Angel, back on its feet, took the opportunity to strike him from behind with its energized spike, knocking the Defender down. He managed to roll out of the way of the Angel's next attack. It was then that his mechanical beast had recovered and charged at the Angel, tossing it on its back.
"Defender Torozord, activate!" The giant-sized warrior called out.
The ground shook wildly as the mechanical bull began to change its form. The transformation started with the bull's hind legs going upright, making the front hooves reveal fists as it stood up, causing the whole robot bull to transform into a battle mode.
The main part opened up and the Defender leaped inside. It started to close all around him and the back of the bull's head opened to reveal the Defender with a different face, completing the transformation.
' This ends now!' thought Shinji, connecting two of his lance-like swords together.
The Angel, back to its feet again, was about to charge for a final attack, but the Defender Torozord brought his weapon up to a horizontal stance and started to spin really fast while his weapon gathered lightning energy. Then, he spun towards the Angel, cutting through its AT-Field and cutting its core in half like it was made of paper.
The Angel staggered for a bit, then went down before it exploded in a burst of flames. Leaving nothing but debris, the battle was won for now.
( NERV HQ)
'So, the legend of the Magna Defender is true, and he has come to protect us, just as the Power Rangers once did.' thought Fuyutsuki, with a smile. "The old men aren't going to be happy about this."
Gendo just grunted and rose from his seat and left the room while the rest of the bridge tried to check on the condition of Shinji and Unit-01. Fuyutsuki continued to look at the massive black Zord, in amazement. Then as it quickly as it came, I the Zord was engulfed in a bright green light. The light died down and the large bull had changed back to its previous form
"What just happened?" the sub-commander asked seeing the Bull Zord change
Before a response could be made, the bull released a large thick body of mist blocking it from sight.
( Outside in the ruins of the City)
After powering down and returning to his normal state, Shinji was about to climb back into Unit-01 until the bull roared softly.
"Thank you for your help, Torozord. You'd better disappear before they come and find you." Shinji told it, climbing back into the plug.
The mechanical bull understood and released a large body of fog to cover its tracks. As he watched it disappear into the night, the systems in the cockpit began to come back online. Shinji then decided to play possum and pretend to be unconscious so the commander's lapdogs would be none the wiser.
'Gotta keep up appearances, after all.' he thought as he closed his eyes and pretended to be out cold.
End chapter
End Notes: This is a rewrite of Rise of the Defender determined Hero Shinji chapter one. I looked through it and I got the urge to do some rewriting. This was all my earlier work, and I've decided it needs some serious revamping. I will be doing the same to the other chapters too, as well as my earlier stories. With everything going on and the world virtually on pause, it forced me to look back on something things, that desperately needed fixing. Do not worry I'm working on other long-overdue fics. Big thanks to TOAT, others will soon be redone. Read and Review and stay prime.
