Chapter two

"Ugh…" Shinji groaned as he awoke from unconsciousness, opening his eyes to an unfamiliar ceiling. 'Whoa, man…this ceiling is really ugly.'

He got up to look around at his surroundings, and it appeared that he was in a hospital room, judging by the type of bed he was in, and the fact he was in a hospital gown. He then saw his morphers sitting on the desk near his bedside. Picking them up, the events of last night's battle flashed through his mind. No doubt since his ToroZord appeared, Nerv would be asking lots of questions. He had to be careful if he was going to be around Gendo's lackeys for a while.

Shinji would need to assess his situation very carefully he couldn't afford to trust anyone…yet. Shinji took the time to do some quick calisthenics to get the cranks of his joints.

'I'll need to try and get in contact the space rangers and set up a base I have a feeling things will be heating up soon.' Shinji thought, stretching out his limbs.

(Elsewhere)

Gendo was in his office, waiting for the call from SEELE. The Zord's appearance that his Sub-Commander put it was an unexpected factor in all his plans. No doubt SEELE will want an explanation for this factor. He was so deep in his thoughts that he failed to hear Fuyutski walk into the room.

"Ikari," said Kouzo, getting the commander's attention; even though Gendo's face was expressionless, he knew what he was thinking.

"Explain what that robot was, Fuyutski, and who was controlling it," said Gendo to him.

"That robot is called a Zord. They were controlled by a group of heroes in the days before Second Impact." Fuyutski explained.

"What was this group called?"

"They were called the Power Rangers," stated the Sub-Commander.

"What is their purpose?"

"To protect the Earth from all manner of threats. I've seen them in action before when I was a young boy, and they were strong." Fuyutski said with a faraway look in his eyes, remembering his past seeing the Rangers fight the monsters.

"How many of them were there? And where did they get their powers from?" Gendo asked, his mind formulating a plan.

"There were six of them, maybe more. And I don't know where they got their powers or their Zords. Any information on them is scarce at best since Second Impact wiped away any trace of their existence," Fuyustki explained."

The old men are going want to an explanation for this unknown factor. This current Zord, the one that fought the Angel, what was it called?" Gendo asked.
Fuyutski thought hard to remember the bull-like Zord.

"I don't remember, but I think I know who controls it. He's called the Magna Defender, one of the galaxies' greatest defenders," said the Sub-Commander.
Gendo mused over the information given to him by his former sensei. And still couldn't determine if this Magna Defender was a threat to his plans.

"Is it possible to get him to fight for us?"
"I honestly don't know." He told him, and then left the room. 'With what we're planning, he'll sooner destroy us than help us.'

(With Ritsuko and Misato)

Ritsuko and Misato were currently at the sight where Unit-01 had battled the Angel before the mysterious Zord appeared and destroyed it. So far, all they were doing was cleanup work and trying to find and dispose of any remnants of the Angel. But it seemed the Zord that fought it had completely destroyed it, leaving no remains.

"So, are we gonna go with that plan?" Misato asked, fanning herself since it was burning up inside the tent she and Ritsuko were in.

"Of course, the public have to be fools to believe it. But what really concerns me is the appearance of that robot. And it's sudden disappearance." Ritsuko said, looking over her clipboard.

"The Sub-Commander called it a "Zord". It would be really hard to cover that up, along with whatever that other giant was," said Misato.

"I agree. He was around during the pre-Second Impact days. He has to know something about that robot bull and the giant. But according to Hyuga, the ones who had those same robots disappeared before Second Impact happened."

"It's a mystery alright . Did you find anything else? You told me only an AT-Field can neutralize another AT-Field." Misato said.

"That's what I thought, too," said Ritsuko, as she replayed the battle over and over again to see how the mysterious entity cut through the Angel's AT-Field with such ease. Any conventional methods would have resulted in a giant mushroom cloud.

"I certainly hope Shinji's okay," said Misato, deviating from the subject as the boy looked pretty much out cold when he was pulled out of the entry plug.

(Hospital)
Shinji was looking out the window towards the city of Toyko-3. It was a marvelous view from the hospital to be sure. But he had been to others places. Not just places on Earth, but beyond the planet itself. He remembered when Andros and Ashely found him and adopted him and took him away from the Earth itself. They had told him stories of their time as Power Rangers and all the evil they fought. Over the course of time, he had seen many beautiful places and met a lot of faces.

Looking down to the forest area, Shinji was reminded of the jungle forests of planet Mirinoi where he met the galaxy rangers.
He was drawn out of his thoughts when a gurney began passing by. It was the girl from the night, her single red eye locked onto his blue eyes in curiosity while he stared back. Not a word was said between the two as the gurney got further and further away.

' Who is that girl?' Shinji thought as he watched her get further away.

(Nerv HQ)
The Sub-Commander Fuyustki walked back to his office from the commander's office. He had to admit that the appearance of the Magna Defender was an unexpected development. At present, Gendo was now conversing with SEELE to handle this new development. To the old man, it was doubtful that the Magna Defender would want to work with Nerv to fight against the Angels. Knowing Gendo, he's already considered the Magna Defender to be a possible threat to the scenario.
To Kouzo, he was a savior something that earth desperately needed now.

Upon entering his office, he sat down at his desk and proceeded to go through some old files. Flipping through his folders, a photo fell ontop his lap. Picking it up, he saw it was picture. He'd forgotten that he had it. It was picture of a man in a green, skin-type bodysuit with white gloves and white boots and shining, gold chest armor on his chest wielding a flute/dagger and a green helmet on his head masking his identity.
Smiling, he set on his desk, right next to the picture of Yui Ikari, his most prized student and secret crush. Speaking of whom, his thoughts drifted to her son, Shinji. He's not at all what he nor Gendo had expected.

Gendo expected him to be weak-willed and starved for love and attention. But instead, he got someone brash, defiant, calm and unafraid. Heck, the boy even called his father a gutless coward in front of everyone. It was no secret that all who worked for Nerv were fearful of the commander. But not Shinji, which begged the question, who raised him after Gendo left him as a child.

"I'll have to keep my eye on Shinji. And make sure Gendo doesn't do anything to corrupt or demoralize him. I owe that much to Yui," mused Fuyutski, looking at her picture.

(Hospital)
After being given a clean bill of health, Shinji got on his street clothes grabbed his things and headed out the door to check himself out. Quickly getting to the hospital entrance, to his surprise, he saw Misato there.
Evidently, she somehow got it into her head that he was her responsibility, and came to pick him up. But Shinji had other ideas.

'Hate to disappoint you, lady,' thought Shinji, as he took advantage of a group of people leaving the building.
Shinji slipped out, unnoticed by anyone.

Shinji was walking the busy streets of Toyko-3. Despite the danger, people seem to go on with their daily routines. Just like in Angel Grove, when Zordon's Rangers were active, they fought and defeated monsters on a daily basis. He knew he had to find an apartment as well as a place he can use for a base of operations when becomes the Magna Defender. He would need to consider his options and manage his expectations as Japan was small, but, at the same time, big.
Looking around he noticed a magazine stand with apartment advertisements. Picking one up, Shinji began flipping through the pages. He saw one that caught his eye. It was called Sakura Apts., and judging from the picture, it seemed almost traditional as far as Japanese modern houses go. And was only several blocks away. So the sooner he left, the sooner he could get settled in.

"I'd better get going, then." Shinji said, taking off.

Walking the busy streets towards his destination, Shinji's thoughts drifted to the Space Rangers, Andros, Ashely, Carlos, Cassie and T.J. They raised him, trained him (along with other past Rangers), and gave him the family he was nearly deprived of. Seeing that he was already at his destination, he had to admit it was pretty nice. Going inside, he saw the view of the traditional, wooden view of Japanese housing with a garden full of different flowers with a fountain, as well. Smiling, Shinji felt more comfortable since he was Japanese. It felt right to him, as he walked to the front desk and rung the bell for assistance. After a few moments, the manager walked up. To his surprise, she was a slightly averaged-size, middle-aged woman with shoulder-length, black hair, wearing a purple and white kimono.
She smiled and said,

"Hello, welcome to Tenshi Apts. My name is Kaori Watanabe. How may I help you?"

Shinji bowed hastily in respect, and introduced himself, stating his needing of a place to stay.

"Are you all by yourself?" Kaori frowned when Shinji simply nodded in confirmation.

"Aren't you a little young to be staying by yourself?"

"I can take care of myself." Shinji said to her.

"Do you have the money to pay the rent cost?" Kaori asked him.

Shinji thought it best not to say anything about Nerv for the time being. As he thought she probably wouldn't believe. Though he would have to check on how much would he be getting paid. If he was getting paid at all, that is.

"I have a part-time job," he said.

Kaori eyed him, deep in thought. She had some rooms left since the monster attacks scared most of her tenants away. Looking into the youth's eyes, she saw something within him. A fierce, defiant spirit within him reminded her of someone she once knew.

"Does anyone else know you're here?" Kaori asked.
Before Shinji can answer, the door burst open to reveal a very angry Misato. Ignoring the woman, she headed straight for Shinji.

"I've been looking all over for you. Why did you just disappear like that?!"

"I was looking for a place to stay, that's all. No muss no fuss." Shinji said, nonchalantly.

"And you couldn't wait for me? What if something happened to you?!"Ignoring the woman's outburst, the boy turned back to the manager.

"So, you got any rooms or what?" Shinji asked, ignoring Misato.
Kaori looked back and forth between Shinji and Misato, unsure what to do.

Finally she said, "I have a single bedroom left, but-"

"That's fine," Shinji said, cutting her while he noticed Misato was about to interject.

Kaori nodded and went to get the lease.

Misato just stared at the boy with an unreadable expression. She wanted him to stay with her, but now it was too late.

"Are you going be alright by yourself?" asked Misato, regaining her composure and getting a nod from him.
Turning to the door, she was about walk out.

"Just remember, you did a good thing today," said Misato, almost gone out the door.

"Hold on!" Shinji called out to her.

"Yes?"

"I don't quite know my way around here. You think you could show me?"
Misato perked up and nodded.

"Great. Just let me settled in first." Shinji said, signing the lease and taking the key from Keiko.
"I'll help you." Misato said, about to follow him up.

Shinji then heard a faint sound come from his bag; he figured it was his morpher.

"That's not necessary, thanks," said Shinji, rushing upstairs to his new room.
Reaching door 315, the boy used his key to open the door and enter the empty room. Reaching into his bag, he took out the device and answered.

"(Shinji, this is Cassie. Are you okay?)"
