Summary: Darkness falls upon the earth as the angels begin their attacks. But when there is darkness there is also light as a new Magna Defender rises to fight the darkness and protect the earth

Chapter five rewrite
(Shinji's apartment)
"Are you serious Cassie? Zane did that?" Shinji asked over his morpher which doubled as a long range communicator, thanks to some modifications from Kendrix and upgraded tech from KO-35.
("He apparently thought it would be easier to flirt with the General's female guard and get the data we needed.") Cassie said ("That was disastrous, cause she almost took his head off, literally. And it would have happened if Andros and Leo hadn't gotten there at the last minute.")
"I take it Karone wasn't too happy about it was she?"
("No she wasn't. She was ready to go all Astromena on him. Man you should have seen him squirm.")
Shinji merely laughed at the thought of Zane cowering before Karone, in her former Queen of Evil persona.
"I should still be there fighting along side you guys Cass. You, Leo, Carlos, TJ, Kai, Damon, Andros and Ashley." Shinji sighed "I miss you guys."
("We miss you too little brother, but you're needed there, earth needs a defender since we can't be there now. Remember the first Magna Defender's warning")
"I know Cassie. "
("Just remember we love you Shinji, and we believe in you. I gotta get going. I'll talk to you later.") said Cassie
"Alright later." Shinji replied cutting off communication rubbing a hand through his hair. A sudden knock was heard on his door.
Wondering who that could be, Shinji walked to the door and was greeted by the sight of Misato Katsuragi with her expression neutral.
"Can I help you with something?" asked Shinji in a deadpan tone feeling she was here on business.
"I stopped by to let you know, you and the first child will be having a joint sync test." Misato said.
"A joint sync test? With that girl? Isn't she still injured?" Shinji asked only to get a shake of the head no
"Rei has fully recovered and has been cleared for duty by the commander earlier today." Misato answered
'They're already putting her back out into the field after she recovered this soon? Something doesn't seem right.' thought Shinji thinking something was up.
Or something he wasn't being told.
"What's the reason? Is because of certain 'interventions', in the last two battles?"
Misato kept her expression passive, not wanting to give away that the interventions of the mysterious gigantic robot bull that showed up twice, were part of the reason why. And mostly to get a feel of how the two pilots would co exist in the field.
"When is this joint sync test?"
"It was supposed to be tomorrow, but the Commander has ordered it for later today. So I hope you didn't have plans later." Misato said.
"Actually I did, that no good son of a-"
"Hey! Show some respect he's our Commander." Misato scolded
Shinji looked irked, just because she was his CO didn't mean she had the right to lecture him. His issues were his own. Clearing his throat Shinji said.
"Son of a bitch" he finished smirking making the woman glare at him.
Then the sound of his morpher caught his ears, and the boy figured it was Kendrix calling him.
"What's that sound?" the captain asked
"I've got to take a call, if there's nothing else, Ms Katsuragi I'll see you later." Shinji said closing the door.
Turning and grabbing his morpher Shinji answered
"Shinji here, what's up?" he asked
("Shinji its Kendrix, I need you to come to the outpost right away.") Kendrix said with urgency in her voice.
"What's going on? Did your detection satellite pick up something in space? Another angel?"
("I'll explain as soon you get here.")
(Sometime later)
Shinji walked into the outpost building while red lights were flashing and alarms were blaring to see Kendrix, going back and forth on various keyboards, in a damn near frenzy, she was so frazzled she didn't notice the boy walk into the room.
"Kendrix, hey Kendrix!" shouted Shinji over the blaring the alarms
The alarms suddenly went silent and flashing lights stopped, Kendrix breathe a sigh of relief, and sat right down, and glanced at Shinji.
"That was quite a show, not as good as the light shows on Aquatiar and KO-35 , but still not bad." He joked
"Very funny, it was just some minor technical hiccups, that's all." the glasses girl replied straightening herself out.
"If you say so, what's the big emergency?"
Kendrix went over to the main console with large monitor screen, she typed in a few keys and a map of Japan appeared on screen. It showed green patterns concentrated on the far side of the remains of Fukushima, where the power plants were once stationed, there were active radiation spots concentrated. in different locations.
"Radiation hotspots? I thought after second impact, the Japanese government suspended all nuclear activity, and switched to more solar based energy concepts." Shinji said
"That they did, this is something other than just radiation hotspots, watch as I enhance and I zoom in, you'll see a what appears to be a trail." Kendrix explained pulling up a few more images on screen.
"A moving radiation trail? what's this got to-" the boy was about say
Kendrix typed in a few more keys, and showed a somewhat familiar energy signature, it seemed reminiscent of Sting wingers, insect foot soldiers of the fallen Scorpius and his daughter Trakeena.
"Sting Wingers? I thought they were all destroyed during the final battle of Terra Venture." Shinji said
"True, but the galaxy rangers and I have speculated that a few of them might have survived and gone into hiding." the blonde said.
"That's near Fukushima right? I take it you want me to investigate?" asked Shinji seeing her nod
"You shouldn't worry, your powers should protect you enough from any lingering radiation, but I would advise against staying there too long." Kendrix warned knowing she had yet to further enhance Shinji's Magna Defender powers.
They both kept looking at the screen wondering what could have caused it and had Nerv also picked up on it. Speaking which..
"I gotta get to NERV unfortunately, they want me to do a joint synch test with that girl I was telling you about. " Shinji said turning to Kendrix
"The one they used to coerce you, isn't she still injured?" asked Kendrix
"According to my CO, the girl Rei that's her name, has fully recovered and has been cleared for duty.
"This soon?"
"Yes, something is up, she looked way too banged up, to be moving let alone working."
"I suppose you want me to look into it?" Kendrix asked knowing the answer
"Can you? I know there's more to those people than meets the eye, they're hiding something, I just know it.

(Undisclosed location)
Deep in the shadows of a long forgotten location hidden from the eyes of the world at large, large green pod like cocoons were springing up from underground. A massive dark silhouette, moved above them, watching them as they stirred and glowed green.
"Soon, my children, soon you will awaken, and we shall make this world our own." spoke a feminine metallic voice
More cocoons started to stir and begin hatching, and coming out of them, were several clawed hands, and talons rose up, followed by gravelly screams
"Rahhh!"

(An hour later at NERV)
Shinji walked into the empty hall of headquarters, to prepare for his sync test, of course he wanted to skip out, and go into the forests for some training. But he knew he needed to get close to Nerv, so he would play their game for now, he trusted Kendrix enough to break into Nerv's computer system and learn all she can. She was very thorough and didn't like to miss anything.
"Pilot Ikari." a monotone voice said catching his attention
Shinji had to turned around and saw a fully recovered Rei Ayanami dressed in her school uniform, walking up to him, unlatching his morphers and pocketing them he addressed her back.
"You're looking much better then the last time I saw you." Shinji commented
"Yes I am, thank you for your concern." Rei replied
The two walked in sullen silence until they reached the escalator.
"Have you been briefed about our current assignment?" Rei asked stepping on escalator going down
"Yeah, but I don't like it." Shinji replied in an annoyed tone
It is vital for our battle against the angels. To make us more effective in battle." the girl said
"Please, the only reason is because they or rather I've gotten some unexpected assistance in the last two battles." he scoffed
"You do not have faith in the commander's work?"
"Its hard to have faith when one doesn't know the full story, I like to look at all sides of the picture, and the way I see it, there are a lot of dark areas, here. Both literally and figuratively.
"I see," she said
Nothing else was said as the two pilots rode down in relative silence, they walked into their respective locker rooms unaware of the shadowy silhouette in the corner.

( The Next Day)
The alarms rang out, and Shinji was quickly ushered into Unit 01 without delay. The Eva was catapulted directly in front the diamond shaped angel, and got a chest full of laser right away. As a result Shinji was temporarily incapacitated, and the angel continued to hoover around the city of Tokyo-3 with impunity. It wasn't until a few hours later that Shinji finally awoke and found himself in a hospital room, with very hurt chest.
'' That freaking lady, sending me directly into the line of fire, literally, what the hell was she thinking?' thought Shinji with a groan touching his bare chest.
Before Shinji could get his bearings, the door opened to Rei, wheeling a cart full of food. The young Defender didn't question her arrival only that she brought food, since he was very hungry. Not caring that half of him was thankfully still covered, he began eating, while Rei began her explanation of the plan laid out by Misato, which involved sniper rifles, a shield and draining every ounce of power in the country, Shinji knew a certain former Terra Venture tech expert would not like that at all.
"So when do we start?" Shinji asked as he finished eating
"We commence operations in three hours." Rei answered standing up to leave "The captain will be expecting you soon."
"Do me a favor when you see her, tell her thanks a lot for getting me fried." Shinji said sarcastically feeling the burning the sensation on his chest
Rei merely blinked at the words, the term sarcasm obviously lost on her. Rei simply walked out of the room.
"Strange girl." Shinji said watching her walk out

(Hours later)
The two pilots were on the surface, while Misato was going over the plan in exact detail, Shinji was gripping his morphers tightly in his pocket, contemplating on whether or not to morph up and call out Torozord, rendering Misato's insane plan obsolete the first chance he gets. But curiosity overtook him, so he waited to see if the purple haired woman's plan would work.
"We'll only have one chance do this, you understand?" Misato asked the two pilots in front of her
"Understood." Rei said simply
"Yeah," Shinji replied almost unconvinced looking out towards the Angel. The two headed off in to the trailer nearby.
"Are you not afraid?" Rei asked as she undressed from her side of the curtain and began dressing in her white plug suit. Shinji merely chuckled
"Not really," Shinji said calmly as he too undressed "I can't explain why, but I've been in similar situations before."
Rei blinked and asked
"You have?"
"Yeah, with the help of my friends, I've learned to deal with situations like this."
"I see, then why do you do it?"
"I did it at first so that you wouldn't, but I ended being blackmailed as a result, Also because I know there is still good this world worth protecting. Don't get me wrong, I don't consider myself on NERV's side and I am damn sure not on the Commander's side either, I do what I feel is right." He answered finishing up getting ready and grabbing his morphers, just in case.

(Outside)
Both Evas stood in position as the angel moved itself in range of fire. The tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife, Shinji held Unit 01 in place steadying the rifle.
("The angel is moving into range, prepare to fire.") Misato said over the intercom
Shinji forced himself to remain calm, he's done something like this before, as the Magna Defender over hundred times. Any semblance of a surprise shot, was gone the second the angel floated into range.
It immediately detected Unit 01 and began to charging its beam. Unit 00 raised the shield in defense, the angel took aim and fired full force, the shield held, but barely as it was reduced to near melted scrap. Without a second to spare Unit 01 took aim and fired at the opposing angel blowing a small hole into its bulk. The shot drained Unit 01 considerably, and before the Third Child knew he was already out of his plug, and was rushing towards Unit-00, strapping on his morphers.
"Magna Power!" Shinji called out, shifting into the Magna Defender once again.
He climbed onto the Eva and used his sword to cut through the hatch. Peering inside he saw the blue haired girl fading in and out of consciousness,
"W-who are you-" Rei got out before passing out
Shinji said nothing he just merely pulled her out and carried her bridal style off the slightly damaged Evangelion.

(Base Camp)
"Status on the angel?" Ritsuko asked while Misato stood by her
"Blue pattern disappeared, I guess we didn't need that giant bull after all." Makoto said
"I guess we didn't." Misato agreed looking at the dead angel "What's the status on the pilots?"
"The Eva's are offline and the entry plugs have been ejected, Ma'am," Maya reported from her station
"The strain of the firepower must have been too much on Unit 01's power supply, but at least it got results." Ristuko said "And Unit 00 barely held up."
"We'll still need to-"
"Captain, Dr. Akagi the First child has returned." shouted a ground worker
"Great! Where is she? " asked the purple haired Captain
"Ma'am you're gonna want to take look at this for yourself." he said
Both women looked at the man strangely before following him. All those present stopped what they were doing and gathered around. Both Misato and Ritsuko gasped at the sudden object of interest. The figure was carrying the unconscious first child, he was clad in black armor with gold around the shoulders and the waist line where his sword is with a green hexagon in the center of the armor.
Complete with a red and black cape and on his head a helmet and visor with a gold line at the crown with green gem with two horns on both sides. All in all he looked like a galactic knight straight out of a Sci Fi show or a movie. The caped figure walked passed the gaping NERV ground team.
Seeing an open tent with a cot the mysterious stranger gently laid Rei down upon it. The girl barely opened her red eyes, but all she saw before losing consciousness again was brief image of Shinji before blacking out. The caped figure ignored the curious eyes around him and proceeded to walk away until.
"Wait a minute." Called Misato snapping out of her stupor "Who are you?"
The individual in question merely glanced at the purple haired woman before walking away, disappearing into the night.

End Notes: This a complete rewrite of the fifth chapter, I've looked through the original chapter many times and because of another author's criticisms and honesty I decided it was much too flawed. So to all my readers I do apologize(hence the reason why I need suggestions). I'm still learning and mistakes will be made, all I can do is learn from them. So I hope the rewrite is much more clearer than the original. The next chapter the big bad makes a move to attack the city and as the for the object that came from space I'll save that for a few chapters later.
