In the early morning glow there wasn't a cloud in the baby blue sky. They stared at each other, their eyes dancing and twirling as they gazed at each other. The carnival was deserted, but it was perfect. The night before had been long, and drunkenly they had stumbled their separate ways. But they still met each other at the deserted carnival and both sat down on the painted horses of the carousel. The horses gleamed with fresh coats of whites, blacks, yellows and purples and their billowing manes were held in mid air. He sat on the black one and her on the white one. The moment could last forever. With the sun gazing down at them, the carnival deserted but filled with frozen rides it seemed perfect. Suddenly he was gone. She stared at where he had been seconds ago and she exhaled shakily.
"El," her voice was no more than a murmur.
He never reappeared. She closed her eyes hard, but the tears still spilled out of her eyes and fell onto the horse.
"I love you." She cried quietly, but he still didn't reappear.
He was no more than a mirage… of what she had seen last night, and for her whole time at SVU. Even though they fought, even though he was angry, she always saw his face unperturbed by everything and looking serene. That's how he looked when it was just them…when they were happy.
But he got carried away…and would never come back.
He was gone forever.
She clambered off the horse and slowly walked to her car, to drive to the morgue.
Her heart broke and she saw him laying there, his glassy eyes penetrating her no more but looking unreal. Almost like a doll's.
"Why did you have to bring a piece of my heart with you El? How could you love me, but die?"
She turned away from him and left.
