The silence was pretty much what she needed as she had stripped to only her tank top and shorts as she had jumped into the water to herself off from the rage she was feeling earlier. She always liked swimming, it would help her calm down. Diving into the water, the river was at least 15 feet deep. Not too much for her since she was using magic to breathe underwater. The river bed has the typical underwater plants and fish swimming around and just her luck.
"Perfect." She thought as she swam down till her feet touch the river bed.
She got on her knees Gently dug through the dirt. There, she found a thin Dragon Vein and gently touched it. She felt the ground shaking a bit, meaning she must have activated to make the plants grow.
She can see it. Everyone scolding her once she arrives back. Still, she might as well have some fun and scare the hell out of someone. She began to swim up and the closer she got, she could hear muffled talking. Most likely the others realized she went into the woods he thought she smashed down a tree or two. She swam behind the bolder and peaked out a bit, seeing Cordelia and Lon'qu had run into the woods.
"The trees have grown alright." Cordelia sighed as she closed her eyes, "I rarely see magic like this."
The trees had turned greener and some bore fruit. The grass had become greener and flowers bloomed all over.
"She's messing with us." The red-haired thought, "Lon'qu, can I ask you your opinion on Sophia?"
The man was silent for a moment as his gaze went to look at the lake and then to her.
"If I hadn't known she came from a land of no war, I would assume she was a warrior who had seen much bloodshed and destruction. Her gaze sees the world as an enemy." He crossed his arms and looked up to the sky, " She never lets her guard down. Perhaps that is a good thing but also...it could be her downfall."
"What do you mean?" Cordelia asked and Sophia narrowed her eyes.
"She sees the world as her enemy. She may have opened up to a few but she would still keep an arms distance from all. But..." he trailed off a bit, "I sense...hatred and pain. Perhaps sorrow, but not towards the world, but herself." He shook his head, "A warrior gives their life for their country and people. Sophia only fights for herself and selected few. Honestly, tch." He chuckled a bit, "She's a selfish and prideful woman who will not hesitate to bleed it meant saving a life."
"Interesting way of thinking. But," she looked at him with a blank gaze, "why are you 7 feet away from me?"
Sophia quickly covered her mouth to keep the giggle in her throat from escaping. Lon'qu coughed.
"Back to the subject," he quickly said, "what are your thoughts on her?"
"I admit, I still hold somewhat of a grudge that she nearly made fall to my death. Not to also mention the rumors that were going about her as the Shadow Exalt." Sophia cringed, "However when she apologized to me, I was given the impression that we would get along. Perhaps not immediately but still. Yet..." her hands balled into a fist as she remembered the conversation from earlier.
"The person I saw today was a cold-hearted woman who showed no remorse in speaking her words. Her form of speaking is like a brutal massacre. Her words are as sharp as a blade that will not hesitate to cut down even the weakest. Her eyes are like a blizzard, ready to freeze and shatter everything in her sight. Even if she causes pain, she still does it knowing many will hate her." Cordelia gritted her teeth, "I have never felt so much anger towards someone. I wanted to grab her by the hair and slap her. Make her take back everything she said about how Ylisse would be better if Lady Emmeyren was not the Exalt. Does she not know the pain Lord Chrom and his family went through when they saw The Exalt jump? How much they wept and cried. I wanted to be by Lord Chrom's side to comfort him but..." the image of Robin came into her mind, "...How can she speak such words with no hesitation?"
"Have you heard the story of the Crystal Witch?"
"Eh?" Cordelia blinked multiple times, "What does that story have to do with anything?"
Lon'qu remained silent.
"In Valm, The Crystal Witch is depicted as a hero. Her story is that she was a savior who traveled the lands, giving food and medicine to the weak. However, despite how fair and smart she seemed, she didn't exactly have the best reputation. Her words were sharp like a blade and her form of fighting was graceful but deadly. Here in Archanea the Crystal Witch is depicted as a villain. A woman who toyed with life and angered the Divine Dragons, specifically Naga. She was given the curse of emotions. That was her punishment, to become human and lose her powers." Lon'qu closed his eyes and sighed, then they opened just a bit as he gazed at the fish swimming in the lake, "In reality, we don't know who the Crystal Witch was. We make assumptions based on stories or rumors we have heard. Unless we met her, we don't know what her personality is like." He chuckled a bit.
"You know, I can't help but see you and Sophia going at each other's throats in the future. You have quite a feisty personality." He had a small rare smile.
"Feisty!? I am not feisty!" Cordelia huffed but deflated a bit when Lon'qu gave her raised eyebrow, "Okay...Um...perhaps I do need to work on...controlling my emotions a bit." She coughed, "So um...shouldn't we look for her?"
"No, I have a feeling she fine." He said and turned around, heading back towards the village, Cordelia following behind him.
Sophia did not miss the glance at the bolder. She laid on it, resting her arms around it as she gazed at them with half-lidded eyes. She could see the rare smile Lon'qu giving Cordelia as they talked. How her eyes didn't hold so much pain as before. Over time, she could see their relationship develop, each helping each other get over their past loved ones and moving forward. She now sees why Severa is the way she is. A feisty hot-headed girl with a gentle side like her mother and the calmness and grace like her father.
"Now that I think about it," Sophia held her chin in thought, her gaze calculating, "Severa's right arm twitches a bit too much. She won't open up to me about any wounds she suffered, but I did notice one thing...her hands." She thought as she began to recall Severa's movements.
"Her hands shake a bit, and she has expressed a bit of pain. Hmm...could she have arthritis?" She muttered and looked over to one of the fish swimming by her, "And her sword...I've seen it somewhere but where?" She grumbled and closed her eyes, "I sense so much anger in that sword. Maybe her rage...No...Severa does well hiding it. Well, better keep an eye on her. Don't want her to end up with a metal arm."
In a different land, a knight sneezed and his counterpart was spinning in his grave.
[—]
Severa puffed her cheeks out as she had her arms crossed on her chest and legs also crossed as she sat on the chair. She tapped her index finger as Sophia was looking through her medical bag for a certain tool.
"Huh." Sophia pulled out a saw-like knife that made Severa's hairs stand up like a cat, "I was wondering where this was." She put it back and finally found the stress ball she was looking for, "And here it is!" And she quickly turned to her, "Catch!"
"Aaayyyeee!" Severa screeched and quickly caught it, but Sophia heard the hiss, and quickly walked up, grabbing her hands.
Severa froze as Sophia removed her gloves and the woman sighed.
"I thought so." Sophia gently touched her hands, the flesh was burned and the scars remained, the nerves damaged.
It honestly surprised her how well Severa could wield a sword.
"Don't move," Sophia said quickly because she saw that Severa wanted to run.
She studied her hands and began to calculate what needed to be done. One thing for sure, she needed to fix the flesh and nerves.
"Let me take over." Bryhildr whispered in her ear, "You may know the magic that you call modern but the healing arts of old can do miracles beyond this. A simple step. A Saint can make an arm grow back, regenerate the bones. Heal flesh and fix nerves. You aren't exactly at that level yet but I can." she chuckled darkly and Sophia's eyes turned purple.
Her hand glowed, light strings moved around Severa's hands, stitching and fixing the nerves and skin. The bone was damaged and tendons fixed, the stream of blood flowing properly again.
"You poor thing." Bryhildr's voice left Sophia's lips, "Pain and agony, the wounds of war. You've suffered enough. This is your gift." And the light dissipated like glitter, "Ufu, I see the holy arts of Judargal still work perfectly well in this Era." She chuckled as she stood up and walked to the door.
Severa was shaking as she looked at her hands, healed and skin smooth. They weren't shaking from pain but from the shock, she was in. The magic felt, was a combination of white magic but also something ancient. How did she know this? Despite her mother being a Pegasus Knight, her grandmother was once a Cleric of the Church of Naga. A powerful healer, especially during the rule of the previous Exalt, Chrom's father. Severa along with her mother has the potential to become powerful clerics but that is not the path they wish to walk.
"Ah." She glanced her way, "Do keep this secret between us." She smiled and left.
Severa was still skating as she looked at her hands. The magic she felt, she recognized it anywhere. Memories of dreadful encounters of the Deadlord's rose in her mind as she quickly put on her gloves.
"I need to tell Alm." She whispered and quickly stood up to go tell him but when she left out the door she was greeted with a strange sight.
"Look," Sophia sighed, her eyes crimson emerald again, "I want to apologize to you all." She looked at each one of the Shepards.
Gauis wasn't present because he left to go deliver her documents and letter. Sophia turned to Lissa first, "What I said was harsh and I really should have watched my mouth. Especially in the moment that you were processing everything you learned of what went down."
"And Cordelia," she turned to the red-haired woman, "I apologize for calling you a Hussy. It was in the heat of the moment. Sigh..." Sophia looked away with a crooked smile, "I need to work on my temper." She thought.
"Sophia, you also spoke the truth." Lissa said and the woman looked at her surprised, "During the war, it was the first time witnessing so much death. It brought back memories of the days of the first war. Our father was a cruel man. Our mother did everything she could to protect us." She muttered.
Sophia was silent as she continued to hear Lissa speak.
"When our father passed away, I couldn't help let out a sigh of relief." Lissa looked to the ground bitterly as her hands balled into a fist, "We no longer had to hide when he was angry. I no longer had to hear Chrom and father get into screaming matches. Emmeyren didn't look ready to murder him on the spot for beating our mother. When he tried to beat me and Chrom, it was the first time I had seen her so angry." She closed her eyes, recalling the memory.
The image of a royal office, the walls painted white, gold, and blue. A desk with the Brand of Naga burned onto it. Vases shattered, a little girl clinging tightly onto her brother as a butler tries to hold back their father. Their mother shaking as she holds on tightly, shaking. Then the man breaks free, furious, and charges at them. The little girl quickly buried her face into her brother's chest, his arms tightened around her. Their mother screams as she braces to use her body to shield them but it never came. Only a scream that she never knew she would hear.
"GET AWAY FROM THEM!"
Light.
Light engulfed the place, almost blinding them. The sound of wood cracking, someone falling. The currents of the windows ripped the shreds as Lissa slowly peeks out. Her eyes going wide as her heartbeat is loud in her ears. She is shaking as she sees her elder sister. Her hands spread out, her eyes cold as her tome, Gale, floated in from her. Her gaze was furious, she bared her teeth to the one that attacked her family. Chrom along with their mother couldn't believe what had just happened. Their father knocked them out next to the shattered desk.
"Our sister, that was the first time she displayed true anger. But, for a long time, she was afraid of herself. Of what she was cable off. It didn't help that soon our father passed away along with our mother, the role of Exalt suddenly thrust to her. The people hated her and took out their anger on her because of our father's actions. Emmeyren could have retaliated, punish them. But she didn't. Instead, she worked to end the war with Phila beside her. She brought the soldiers home back to their families. She was able to bring peace back to our lands as she worked with the council." Lissa sighed as she looked back at her.
"You and Emmeyren, both you were out in positions you didn't want. You...sigh...understand a lot of things. Anger, hatred, tragic events, and experience change a person. We all have gone through it. Emmeyren is in no condition to rule, but even so, I still believe she can help us. Though not a ruler, perhaps as an advisor. I did see her practicing defense magic. Maybe she could become an amazing mage, an opportunity she didn't have when she was an Exalt." Lissa smiled and her eyes went wide when she felt a gentle hand on her head.
Sophia smiled warmly at the girl as she petted her head, and knelt a bit.
"Hey now, don't cry." She wiped a few tears that Lissa didn't realize she was crying, "Save those tears for happy moments. While I admit, I'm bitch." Cordelia snorted and quickly coughed, "Yes laugh all you want. You heard the rumors that I'm a bitch. Well, it's true." Half the group was trying not to laugh at her words, "And I got a lot of work to do, I already made the decision that I will be standing beside you all. That is...if Chrom and Frederick don't murder me." She chuckled nervously.
"Chrom won't. I can't grantee Frederick though. He and Emmeyren were childhood friends. And...I think it's better he tells you." Lissa said and Sophia raised an eyebrow.
"Oh yeah! Nearly forgot," She quickly turned to Nowi, "Have you met Yune?"
"Yup! It's strange! Yune has wind dragon blood and a mixture of fire and ice! But she's a mix between human and dragon. I smell a bad curse." Nowi muttered and Sophia smiled sadly.
"That's also a reason why I'm going to Ylisse. I...found out Yune is a distant relative of mine." The others looked at her shocked, "I'm glad to learn I have family in this land but...when I learned what the Grimleal did to her. Well...I'm about to turn my back on her."
"No. I'm no ever turning my back on her." She thought as she had a closed eye smile, "My future self...I don't know what happened but I promise you I will watch over our daughter and save her. That's a promise."

Three days had passed and they thanked the people of the town for their generosity. Sophia used her magic to give the fields more life to the trees grow fruit, it was the least she could do. The trip to Ylisse was going to take at least another 5 days and Sophia sent out Claude to get the letter to Lysithea. As for the future kids that rode on her cart, they seemed to be getting along. Severa has been avoiding her, Cordelia, and Lon'qu. She didn't blame her for that. Bryhildr just had to use her body to intimidate the girl. Cordelia and Lon'qu for obvious reasons.
"I'm not apologizing." The DeadLord huffed, "Yes you will." Sophia whispered back.
She looked to the back and smiled softly as she saw Lissa and Emmeyren speak along with Olivia. A small step but a big leap. Emmeyren smiling and learning about herself, family and life.
"Hey, Kellam." She looked over to the knight that walked beside the wagon, "What is Ylisse like? I've never been there before."
"Oh! You never been to Ylisse? The Capital of Ylisse is where the royal palace is. Hm..." the knight thought for a moment, "It's difficult to explain. Hm...Well, maybe it is better if you use it yourself. Especially since you'll be living in the palace with the rest of us Shepherds."
"HOLD UP!"
Everyone looked at her shocked and Sophia quickly coughed, trying to hide her embarrassment at her outburst.
"S-Sorry." Sophia cleared her throat, "It's just...I-I was expecting I would live in an apartment or possibly buy a small house to live in! Um...am I going to have to live in the palace with the others?" She looked at them nervously.
"Well, Gauis lives in an apartment near the candy shop but he recently moved in with Sumia." Nowi chirped.
"I live in the Knight's Quarters along with Felix and Lon'qu but only because my house is a bit too far from the Ylisse palace," Kellam explained and Lon'qu nodded.
"No wait, didn't Lysithea recently move into one of the dorms at the Magic Academy?" Lissa said as she quickly went to sit beside Sophia.
"There's an area in the palace that was built for those that serve the Royal Family." Cordelia said from above, "I live there. Frederick's room is about four doors from mine and Phila lives in the Summer Palace, where she trains the Pegasus Knights. Miriel lives near the Magic Academy." She said as she gave her Pegasus an order to get a bit closer to the group.
"I'm currently living in the palace! Derrick and Tharja recently moved in together, near the Magic Academy. Though, Tharja spends most of her time at the Alchemist Department with Martha." Nowi giggled and the others frown at Martha's name.
"Viron, Ricken, Vaike, Sully, Gregor, and Donnel are living in the Knight's Quarters. Panne has her room in the palace but she prefers her time in the forest. Mariable has a house that is near Rifia Lake. It's about an hour from Ylisse. Hmm..." Lissa thought for a moment, "I feel I'm forgetting someone. Oh!" She clapped her hands together, "Libra lives near the Church of Naga."
"So to answer your question, not everyone lives in the palace." Lon'qu muttered, "Just speak to Chrom and Robin. I'm sure they'll understand if you don't feel comfortable living there." Sophia gave him a small nod.
"Aww! I think you would enjoy it!" Lissa giggled, "Also, the kitchen palace is very big~" she sang and Yune jumped between them, her wings fluttering happily.
"How big?! How big?! Sophia, we can bake cakes and cookies! And, and! Oh! Anutie Lissa, you can make apple pies!" She gave Lissa the biggest grin.
"Auntie?!" Lissa felt her world shattered to a million pieces that the little girl was already calling her Auntie.
Emmeyren was trying not to let her laughter show but unfortunately...
"You too, Auntie Emmeyren! Oh! And Auntie Cordelia can join us too!"
The ex-Exalt looked like she had turned to stone while Cordelia looked as if someone had punched her in the gut. Lucina sighed as she looked over to her friends, who were trying to hold back their laughter from witnessing the event. Sophia, somewhat felt bad that her daughter was calling them Aunties. They are still young after all.
"I'm not old..." Lissa whimpered weakly.
"You okay Auntie Lissa?" Yune asked and Lissa felt like an arrow stabbed her.
"I am honored in being called your Aunt!" Emmeyren squealed and Sophia smacked her forehead, her hand sliding down her face.
She saw a flash of jealousy in Lucina's eyes but that look suddenly went away when Emmeyren turned to her.
"I know this strange but...your hair color, it looks familiar. I can not help but feel warmth when I see you. It reminds me of someone but the image escapes me." Emmeyren smiled sadly to her, "Even if have not sprung much time, you're welcome to call me Aunt if you want. For some reason, I think it is a good idea." She smiled warmly.
"A-Auntie Emm..." Lucina muttered and then gasped when she realized what she had done.
But Emmeyren's smile was warm he bright as she gently hugged the girl. The Princess held back her tears as let herself relax in her arms. A soft tune left the woman lefts.
"Pst." Sophia quickly whispered to Alm, "Kamera in my bag." And said quickly but quietly took a picture.

It was a surprise running into Anna as they were now two days away from Ylisse. The red-haired woman cheered and gave Sophia a hug that made her bones pop.
"Look at you! You look like the walking dead!" Anna laughed as she had her hands on her waist.
"Thanks for the compliment," Sophia grumbled as the red-haired woman looked over her shoulder.
"Hey, Alm and Marth! Long time no see! And I see Owain and Inigo are with you. But um..." she looks at Severa and Yune, "Who are these two?"
"Hi!" Yune raised her hand and grinned, "I'm Yune! I'm Sophia's adopted daughter!"
Anna slowly turned to Sophia as well as the Shepards.
"She's a distant relative of mine and I decided to take her in!" Sophia screeched as she immediately figured out what was going through their minds.
"Damn." Anna clicked her teeth, "And here I thought you got laid." Thank goodness Severa was covering Yune's ears, "Which by the way, I think you do." Sophia groaned, covering her face in embarrassment.
"I'm Severa," Severa grumbled and closed the cart flap.
"Good to see you, Anna!" Nowi yelled out, "Got candy for me?"
"Nowi, I told you that getting those sweets you want is difficult. But I got a few others! They're for the wedding in a few months!" Anna cheered.
"Chrom and Robin requested certain items from you?" Sophia said as they got back on their carts and began to go forward on the road.
"Yup!" Anna grinned, "Frederick made a special request in getting silk from Valm for the inside of Chrom's clothing and Martha asked for some hair dye." She hummed.
"Okay, seriously. Who is Martha? You all sound strange whenever she is mentioned." Sophia said as she looked at them.
"Frederick's cousin." Lissa began, "Childhood friend as ours. Same age as Emmeyren. Except...think of her a combination of Tharja and Sumia." Tharja gave her a murderous glare that made her flinch.
"Martha believes in science." Cordelia sighed, "Don't get us wrong. We support her but the way she does things does raise questions. The Alchemist Department was established 400 years ago by two descendants of the Chalphy and Pherea clans. Over the years, they helped create technology and magical advances with the Magic Department. The Magic Department was established 2000 years ago by Queen Caedea. However, both Almemist and Magic Departments clashed with the Religious Apartment, also known as the Church of Naga." And Sophia already knew where this was going.
"The Alchemist Department was shut down 40 years ago by my grandfather and our father did the same.." Lissa muttered, "However, just because they were shut down, it didn't stop the study of alchemy. Many alchemists had to go into hiding during those years because the Exalt had ordered a decree for them to be hunt down." She sighed.
"It was only till Emmeyren became Exalt that the Alchemist Department was reopened. And who do you think it was? Martha and her husband." Kellam smiled sadly, "Her husband, his name was Albert, from the Pherea Clan. He was a respected man and the most talented Alchemist in Ylisse. Martha was the world to him and both worked with Emmeyren to reestablish the Alchemist Department. Many that were originally in hiding returned and helped Emmeyren's bright peace. But..of course, some people weren't happy." He frowned at the memory.
"Albert was assassinated on a trip to Ferox. Plegai was innocent, so was Ferox. It wasn't bandits, but Martha fell into a difficult time. But..." Lissa closed her eyes at the scream Martha unleashed at her, Chrom, Frederick, and Emmeyren when they told her about his death.
"IT WAS THE CHURCH! IT WAS THAT BASTRD OF FIROTHEUS! IT WAS HIM!"
"She believes it is someone from the Church of Naga." Sophia suddenly said, "I'm assuming she also has a strained relationship with Frederick and Libra."
"Sigh..." Cordelia sighed, "Martha was originally supposed to become the head of House Albright because she is the oldest but because someone ratted out that she was studying Alchemy in secret, which is shunned by many, the title of the head was passed down to Frederick instead. Because of this, Martha distance herself from him and eventually left the clan altogether. As for the rest, I think it would be better you hear it from Frederick and her. As for Libra, she wants him to help prove that the head of the church ordered the assassination of her husband. Libra doesn't have that power and him trying to help her could lead to serious consequences." She looked at her sadly.
"We care for her. Not even Chrom has been able to get through to her. But..." Nowi looked to Tharja, "Tharja, Robin, and Morgan, she has opened up to them. Maybe you two might get along." She grinned.
"Speaking of Martha, the items she asked to get was very difficult. At least I'm getting paid a pretty good amount of money!" Anna smiled and she saw the others giving her curious looks, "Ah, ah, ah!" She waved her index finger, "She and I have a contract of confidentiality. Can't say what I have."
"Reminding me of contracts," Sophia held her chin for a bit, "how long would it take you to get me history books from Valm and fire and sea silk? Or indigo tree seeds for ink?" she asked, "Possibly also a silkscreen also so I can make some homemade paper!" She chirped.
"Hmm...Books from Valm are currently impossible to obtain because of the war. The borders to Valm have all been closed off and no one has been able to enter or leave. However, there are the few bold who have managed to escape. Ferox, Plegia, and Ylisse all have rescue teams at the shores to help refugees. Indigo seeds...Those are in Chon'sin but the seeds I can obtain from the Black Market or the Red Light District of Archanea. Sea silk, from the Hydro Islands on the east of Ferox and the Fire Silk from Pyro Islands west of Plegia...a pound of those, is 2 silver each. Also, what's a silkscreen?" She looked at her friend curiously.
"Let's just say," Sophia smiled as she placed her index finger on her chin, "it's the start of small business. Speaking of that, do they do printing in Ylisse?" She asked.
Surprisingly, the direction of the conversation shifted to that of the economy. It was all could speak in. Plegai was still recovering from the war but since the underground and mountain mines produced gold, silver, platinum, and copper, they would be able to recover and rebuild the city. Rocks and minerals were also materials that were in trades, especially since Plegai was also known as the City of Magic. Ferox's trade was rare furs, tools for the blacksmith, alcohol being its number one source because of the environment exclusive fruits and vegetables that grow in the extremely cold environment. The wine was also made from melting ancient glaciers that were collected from the sea. Ylisse was known for their wine industry, barley and wheat, the forest filled with herbs, and their mountains have mines that grew precious stones. Business, which Anna loved talking about. But what surprised Sophia more was that Alm was speaking.
"What about opening a paper business?" He said and Anna along with Sophia looked at him surprised as the others.
"Hear me out." He coughed since he was getting a bit nervous as all eyes were on him, "The process of making parchment paper is expensive not to also mention tiring. It is mostly used by nobles to record and make books. Books especially are expensive and the common people don't have access to higher education. And I'm saying this now if the common people are allowed their talents to be nurtured, many talented individuals could be found. They could help the economy and make Ylisse a better place." He explained and Anna spoke.
"How does this connect to the paper business?" Anna asked her smile.
"Paper can be made from trees."
"I'm listening."
"That's not the only thing paper could be made of." Sophia spoke up, "In my country, the paper was made from a variety of materials. Cotton, wheat straw, sugar cane waste, flax, bamboo, wood, linen rags, and hemp. Still, fiber is needed. Also, it's cheaper and much more affordable. I know the process of how to make it." She looked over to Alm, "I can teach you."
"WAIT, YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE PAPER?!" Many yelled, mainly the females.
"And I know how to make books too." Sophia answered as her hearing was recovering, "I had a variety of jobs before I fully settled in becoming a doctor. Making paper, dancing, baking, and such were my hobbies and among other things." She sighed as she gently shook her head.
"Like reading erotic novels?" Severa muttered and gasped once she realized she said it out loud.
Sophia slowly turned to the girl with a closed eye smile but a terrifying aura was surrounding her. The others were snickering while Alm, Indigo, and Owain, made salutes as if they were wishing her farewell.
"You are hereby banned from eating putting for a whole two months."
"NO! SOPHIA, I'M SORRY!"
[—-]
They had arrived earlier than expected, during the afternoon. The gates to Ylisseton were opened, allowing people to enter and excite. There were two knights stationed at the entrance, which they greeted travelers. Emmeyren wore her hood as she looked around, amazed by the sight. Sophia herself was shocked as she saw how lively the capital was. The dream she had a year ago was nothing compared to seeing it in person. Buildings of colors of blue and green. On balconies, there were tables set up for people to chat eat and drink. Shop vendors and stalls opened of all kinds of things. The scent of food was all over the place. The giant walls surrounded the huge city. Guards were stationed at the top. Gaint buildings with windmills, the spun.
"Sniff...Sniff!" Yune's wings shot open, "I smell cinnamon bread!" And off she jumped off the cart.
"Yune!" Sophia yelled and quickly handed the reins to Alm, "I'll meet you all at the palace entrance!" And she quickly jumped, running after her.
"Sophia, wait!" She heard the others yell but she ignored them.
She ran through the crowd, looking around, searching for a flash of red. And she did, she quickly ran towards it. Now she understood why so many people panic when kids get lost in the crowds. The area she ran into was known as the Magic district. She kept turning and turning, panic rising in her chest till finally, she spotted her near a bakery.
"Yune!"
Yune turned around and she ran to her, quickly picking her up, spinning her, and hugging her tightly.
"Oh, Yune!" Sophia sobbed a bit as she knelt, putting the girl down, "Please don't run off like that!" She said and Yune pouted.
"It's alright. I made sure no harm befall her."
"Sigh..." Sophia sighed and looked up, "I am so sorry f—Frederick?" She froze once she realized who Yune was with.
Frederick looked at her shocked as he held a bag of bread in his arms. He was dressed in along sleeve button-up white shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a sword on his waist. He wore a black eye patch with the Brand of Naga on his left eye and black gloves. He looked well. Sophia was shocked as she looked at him up and down. It felt so strange seeing him without his armor, dressed so casually.
"Sophia?" His voice made her snap out of it s she quickly stood up.
She felt heat rising in her cheeks as she cleared her throat.
"I-It's good to see you," Sophia said as She quickly stood in front of Yune protectively.
"It's good to see you too." He smiled softly, "If you are worried, the girl caused me no trouble at all. I was going to pay for the food she ordered. She forgot her wallet." He chuckled and Yune whined.
Sophia couldn't help but snickered as the vendor walked up to Frederick.
"Here you go, sir. Four cinnamon sweet loaves. Enjoy it with your daughter and wife." They smiled and Sophia's face exploded to red, while Yune cheered as the vendor handed her the bag.
"Cough! I-I think there is a misunderstanding!" Frederick quickly said and the vendor just snickered as they walked away.
There was an awkward silence between the two and then they looked at each other before they looked away, flustered.
"So," Frederick coughed, "when did you arrive at Ylisse?"
"Just a few minutes ago." Sophia said and smiled softly as she turned back to him, "It's good to see you are doing well. I arrived with Anna and a few of the Shepards. They are heading to the palace. I came after this little one." She did a light smack on Yune's head, "Someone needs to learn not to jump off carriages."
"How could resist the smell of sweet cinnamon loaf bread?!" Yune pouted as she held up the bag, "These are divine gifts of the Gods! The sweet texture, the buttery scent, flaky bread! It is perfection!" Her eyes were sparkling as if Naga was presenting her with a gift.
"If I may, who is this? Is she a relative of Nowi?" Frederick asked as they began to walk together.
"This is Yune." Sophia gently patted the girl's head, "She is a distant relative of mine that I have taken in. Her parents, unfortunately, were killed by the Grimleal during the war, so...I decided to adopt her." She explained and Frederick looked at the girl that was devouring the bread, sadly.
"My apologies if it is a heavy topic if you wish not to discuss it." He said and Sophia shook her head, "It's alright." She reassured him, "I'm more surprised seeing you here in the town without your armor."
"Ah, you are right about that." Frederick said, "It...does feel strange without my armor but I did not want to attract attention." He stopped, "You said you are heading to the palace. If it is alright, may I take you there? This is your first time in Ylisse, I would hate to see you get lost." He said and Sophia was a bit hesitant.
"We accept!" Yune grinned, her wings fluttering a bit, "I'm Yune! What's your name, Mister Knight? You have a strange scent. I like it!"
The man couldn't help but chuckle as he patted her head, "My name is Frederick. I'm...a friend of Sophia."
"Hiya, Frederick!" She grinned and Sophia couldn't help but smile softly.
"Shall we head to the palace?"
[—-]
The walk to the palace was delightful. During their walk, Frederick was kind by telling them about the shops they passed by as well as a bit of the history of the town. There were a few new buildings that were being built or repaired because of the attack Grangrel unleashed on the city when they captured Emmeyren. Yet, now that the war was over, the city was recovering. Yune was ecstatic as she kept asking questions about the city and Frederick was more than happy to answer. Sophia was silent the majority of the walk, just listening to their conversation. But, she did notice Yune's eyes scrunching once in a while. Yune recognized all of the Shepherds as well as the future kids. However, she is still missing memories. She didn't recognize Frederick, he did seem somewhat familiar to her. She sighed softly and looked up the hill that led to the palace. She was awestruck. The castle was giant beauty, similar to the fairy tale castles she would see in a book and also the mane has.
"It's beautiful." She whispered and before Frederick could say anything, Lysithea was seen running down the stairs towards them.
"There you are!" The purple-haired woman panted, "Chrom and Robin have been waiting for you! Same with Phila! Did you forget about the meeting?! And I thought you would be arriving tomorrow!" She panted and quickly looked over to Frederick, "You need to get to the meeting room, now!"
"My apologies Sophia and Yune!" Frederick did a polite bow to them, "I was told there was going to be a private meeting tomorrow but seems it has been moved today! I must go!" He said and quickly began running up but stopped, "I enjoyed our time today!" And took off.
Sophia was silent as she watched the man gritted the guard and bolt into the palace. Her eyes were dazed as the door, closed and she sighed.
"You won't look at me the same once I reveal why this meeting was made." She thought and turned to Lysithea, and saw Henry had also arrived.
"Howdy! Been awhile. You look like the dead." Henry chuckled as his crow cocked its head, staring at Yune, "And who's the little lady?"
"I'll explain everything after the meeting." Sophia said, "For now, could you please take her with you to the others? I don't want her to witness what is about to go down." She said and gently patted Yune on the head.
"Alright." Henry nodded, "But you owe me a new magic lesson for this" She gently handed Yune to him, "Come on, kid. Uncle Henry will teach you to commit heresy!"
"Henry!" Sophia glared at him as he cackled and Yune gave her a thumbs-up as they left.
Lysithea shook her head as they began to head up the stairs. Sophia observed her friend. Lysithea looked happier, a bit of a glow on her skin. Her eyes more life and her hips were a bit wider. Meaning she's grown a bit.
"Be honest." The woman spoke, "Who is the girl?"
"I found out I do have family in Arachanea." Sophia sadly at her friend, "I don't know whether I should be happy or worried." They arrived at the doors, and the guards opened them.
The inside of the place was as luxurious as the outside. The walls were painted white with colors of gold and blue. Windows of stain glass of different colors, currents of light cream color with gold tassels. The hallways wide and spacious, with a blue carpet at the center. Paints of heroes, clans, and such hanged in the walls. Pedestals with vases filled with white flower-like Celica, camellia, roses, and such. Lysithea led her down the hallway and then made two turns to the right. To the office of the exalted. There, outside, waited, Lissa and Robin, along with Emmeyren, who still had her hood. The older woman was seemed nervous as Robin spoke to her softly.
"We're here," Sophia spoke and they turned to her.
Robin was no longer dressed in her normal tactician clothing but that of the GrandMaster Taction. Her hair, still in twin tails but with cream-colored ribbons.
"It's been a while." Robin smiled as she walked up to the woman, "Don't think I didn't see what you did when you wrote that report."
"Well, start teasing me of my love life again and I'll fire back," Sophia smirked.
"Well played." Robin chuckled, "But I'm all seriousness, I a glad to see you again."
"Me too." Sophia smiled softly as the two women hugged, "Is…Chrom, Frederick, and Phila in there?"
"They are." Lissa spoke up, "Are you ready?"
Sophia sighed as she held her hands together, as she stood in front of the door. Her heart was pounding, she could hear it in her ears. Her hands were trembling as she looked at the door. This door, if she opened it, two scenarios, one or the other would go down. Robin noticed her nervousness and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. Sophia looked at her, her lips a bit parted but her eyes screamed it all. She was terrified.
"It'll be alright," Robin whispered and Sophia gulped but nodded.
The tactician opened the door in they went. The inside of the office of the Exalt was big. There was a table set up for multiple guests, with a tray of tea and snacks. Shelves filled with books and documents of great importance. Candles hanging from the ceiling, a soft smell of vanilla in the air. The desk at the far end of the room near the windows and the fireplace above it was a painting of the royal family. But, Sophia's eyes were focused on three individuals. Chrom looked taller, more mature, but he still wore that damn same uniform. Phila, the woman looked tried. Her skin was a bit pale, and there were dark circles under her eyes. Her hair was tried up in a ponytail and she wore a blue long sleeve shirt with a ruffled collar, black pants, and she had a cane. Chrom heard the door opened and turned, he blinked multiple times till she broke into a smile. Phila was surprised along with Frederick as Lysithea entered along with Lissa and Emmeyren. There was confusion written in their features when they saw the hooded person.
"Sophia! It's been so long!" Chrom grinned as he walked up to shake hands with her, "I'm glad to see you come to Ylisse. I was already informed by Lon'qu that you arrived with them, Anna and a few others." He said and she nodded.
"That's right," Sophia muttered and turned to Phila, who gave her a nod.
"Um, Lysithea, if I may ask, why are you here?" Phila said as she looked at the hooded woman curiously.
"Sophia's emotional support." The mage said and Sophia nodded.
"Okay?" Chrom looked at her confused, "Now that everyone is here, Robin, you said that this meeting is important."
"Actually," Sophia spoke up as she took a step forward, her hands held together, "I am...the one who asked Robin to arrange this private meeting."
"You?" Frederick said, "Did something happen that you needed us called here?"
"There is..." her hands were shaking, "something I need to tell you all. Something...I-I...h-have been hiding these past few months." She was scared.
"Sophia, breath," Robin whispered and Sophia only felt her heart increase.
"Hiding something? What have you been hiding that requires all of us here?" Phila narrowed her eyes at her.
"This is...about Emmeyren," Sophia said and the air in the room became tense.
She saw the frown that formed on Frederick's face and how Phila's eyes darkened. Chrom had an unreadable expression as she continued to speak.
"When I was imprisoned in Plegai...I came up with a plan. A plan to save Emmeyren even if it meant risking my life." The silence felt suffocating, "But those plans were thrown out the door when the Risen Queen showed up. But...But..." she was interrupted.
"Get to the point," Frederick said and Chrom gave him a look to calm down.
"Sophia, please continue." He reassured her and she nodded.
"I..." she let go a shuttered breath, "I have been hiding this for a while. I honestly didn't know if I should have told you all the truth or not. This truth that I have been hiding...could only bring you all more pain..but...you all deserve to know it." She turned to the hooded woman and had her walk up.
Many held their breaths as Sophia gave her a nod and she gently removed her hood.
If anyone was holding a glass of water, they would have dropped it immediately at the shock of seeing the person that stood in front of them. Phila began shaking as she brought her hands to her mouth, sobs escaped her lips as tears began to fall. Frederick, frozen in place as his eyes went wide, unable to believe. Chrom slowly took a step forward, his hand gently caressed Emmeyren's cheek. He was shaking, trembling, tearing forming in his eyes as he chocked her name.
"E- Emm..." he whimpered and Emmeyren was silent but smiled softly as she wiped a tear from his eye.
"Don't cry. It will be alright." She smiled warmly and Chrom broke.
He hugged her tightly, crying loudly as he fell to knees, the older woman hugging him gently as she petted his head. Lissa was crying as she walked up and Emmeyren welcomed her into the hug. Lysithea sniffed, unable to hold back her tears as Phila slowly walked up with Frederick.
"I-Is...it really you?" Phila whispered as the group stood up and Emmeyren smiled softly.
"You must be Phila...It is a pleasure to meet you." Emmeyren said and confusion filled Chrom's, Phila's, and Frederick's features along with Lysithea, who looked at Sophia for an explanation.
"And, you are Chrom...Lissa has told me a lot about you." Chrom was starting to become even more worried, "When I see you, Lissa and Phila. I feel happy. Warm."
"Sophia, what is going on?" Lysithea said in a panicked tone, "Why doesn't Emmeyren recognize them?!"
Sophia gulped as he spoke as their eyes turned to her.
"When Emmeyren fell, she suffered life-threatening injuries and permanent brain damage from the impact on her head." She began to explain, "During the attack of the Risen Queen, I managed to teleport her to a safe location. After the attack, I went to that location and used my skills to save her. Originally, the injuries she suffered, she wouldn't have recovered. But, I was able to save her. But, unfortunately, after she was healed, came the after-effects of the injuries she sustained." She said Frederick's looked to the ground as he gritted his teeth.
"What injuries?" With the edge in his voice, Sophia wanted to run.
"Sophia, please explain," Chrom said and she nodded, taking a deep breath.
"The injuries caused her to lose all her memories. Her ability to walk. Her ability to speak. Her ability of movements. With everything that happened and the war just barely ended, I...took upon myself to hide Emmeyren and help her heal properly." She gulped, "I helped regain all her abilities back but she still has difficulty speaking and her left arm is still somewhat numb. As for her memories..." she closed her and sighed, "I don't know when they will return. Or...they might never return."
"How long were you planning to hide this?" Phila looked at her coldly.
"Originally, six months." She admitted, "I wanted her to be well first before I returned her to her family. But...The Khans discovered I was hiding her and also we were attacked by the Grimleal. So, I decided it is best to return her to you all. That...is my truth. I'm sorry." Sophia put her hands together and bowed.
Frederick gritted his teeth and Phila was silent. Sophia kept her head down as Chrom was silent. She was awaiting judgment. She could already see herself banned from Ylisse. She ca—
"Raise your head."
Sophia's eyes snapped open and she slowly looked up, the prince did not look at her with scorn or rage. But with warmth and understanding as she stood up. He walked up and Sophia froze as he hugged her tightly. He was still crying a bit.
"Thank you...for saving my sister." He said and let go of her, smiling sadly, "I'm torn, my friend. I've torn, Robin." He muttered as Robin walked up and held his hand, " If she somehow regains her memory, it may mean greater pain for her."
"It may, yes." His lover replied and he turned to Emmeyren, holding her hand.
"I want you to remember Lissa and me. I want to just...talk to you again. Is that selfish of me? I know I'd be returning you to a world that nearly killed you once already. If you remember all the taunts, all the guilt, all the pressure you lived under... You're alive and free, and for that, I should be doubly grateful. And yet... It's not enough. It's not enough for you to be alive like...this." He closed his eyes, tears falling yet, they snapped open when he felt a gentle hand on his cheek.
Emmeyren smiled sadly as she closed her eyes.
"Seeing you and Lissa cry, it hurts. Yet, even if my mind doesn't remember you, my heart, it does. When I see you, Phila, and Lissa, I feel joy. I...may not have my memories but...let us make new ones." She said, "I want to get to know you all! I want to know you and everyone! I want to rebuild our bonds. To be there for you. Even if the memories are painful...I will always be with you. So please...don't cry anymore." She said yet she was crying.
"Alright, then." Chrom sniffed me wiped his eyes, "No more crying. For any of us." He smiled softly, his eyes determined, "You were strong for me once. Now it's my turn. I'll keep you safe from now on, Sis. I swear it." He said and the two hugged each other tightly.
Sophia carefully slipped out of the room, making sure they were left alone, so private time with each other. She took a deep breath and began to walk away. Anywhere but the door. Anywhere but near them. Her steps were becoming faster and faster, running up and downstairs, to different floors, till she finally realized she has no idea where she ran. She looked around, feeling the cool breeze of the night. She panted, placing her hands on her knees as she caught her breath. She looked around, the scent of roses and water was there. She saw a water fountain, a statue of Naga was its centerpiece, water coming out of her hands. Bushes of roses and flowers, and trees planted all around. She walked to near the balcony. She looked around, seeing dust had accumulated and some vines had grown in.
"You're still alive," Bryhildr muttered as she nodded and sat down.
"Yeah but not for long." Sophia muttered, "Chrom, Lissa, and Robin may forgive me. Phila is a maybe but not Frederick. Now I understand why he was so angry all those months ago when I saved him." She looked up to the sky, "Emmeyren was his childhood friend and...I think he felt something more towards her."
The was silence as she closed her eyes, feeling the breeze touch her skin. She suddenly stood up, the emotions in her eyes disappearing as she walked towards the balcony. The breeze felt colder and Bryhildr bit her tongue as she started to hear the dark voice speaking to Sophia.
"̷O̴t̵h̸e̵r̶ ̷h̸a̶l̷f̸ ̶i̶s̴ ̷n̴e̴a̴r̷.̴ ̴A̷n̴o̸t̴h̷e̸r̵ ̷h̴a̸l̶f̶ ̷y̸o̴u̶ ̸m̵u̵s̶t̵ ̸g̸o̵.̴ ̵T̴h̴e̵s̸e̵ ̸l̵a̶n̷d̸s̵ ̵h̸o̵l̴d̷ ̷n̸o̴t̴ ̴v̵a̵l̸u̵e̸.̵ ̷Y̵o̷u̶ ̸w̸i̷l̴l̴ ̵n̴o̵t̷ ̵b̴e̶ ̷f̸o̶r̸g̷i̶v̷e̷n̷.̷ ̴A̴n̷o̸t̷h̴e̸r̸ ̵h̸a̴l̶f̴ ̴i̷t̵ ̷i̷s̸ ̵b̷e̷t̸t̸e̴r̴ ̶t̶o̵ ̷l̵e̵a̶v̷e̸.̶ ̷L̵e̵a̴v̶e̸.̵.̴.̷j̶u̵s̸t̷ ̸l̵e̶a̸v̵e̴.̵"̶ ̶
The voice cooed in her mind. It was dark, twisted, yet comforting for some reason. A was twisted comfort as it embraced her. It was blocking something out. As trying to keep something away.
" T̶h̶e̷ ̶o̴t̷h̵e̷r̸ ̶h̵a̸l̸f̵ ̴w̷i̵l̶l̵ ̵c̶o̶m̸e̷ ̵n̶e̴a̴r̴.̸ ̷T̸h̵e̵ ̶o̴t̵h̶e̸r̶ ̵h̵a̴l̶f̵ ̸m̴u̵s̴t̵ ̵s̸t̴a̷y̷ ̶a̴w̶a̴y̸.̸ ̴O̵t̴h̷e̶r̸s̸ ̶s̸a̷y̵ ̵i̴t̷ ̶i̶s̴ ̸l̵i̴g̷h̸t̵ ̴b̸u̴t̵ ̶e̵v̸e̴n̷ ̸l̷i̴g̶h̴t̷ ̶c̷a̵n̴ ̷b̶e̷ ̶t̶w̵i̶s̶t̷e̶d̴ ̶l̶i̷k̴e̸ ̶d̶a̴r̷k̴ ̵t̴w̸i̴s̸t̵e̴d̸ ̶t̴o̸ ̴l̸i̴g̴h̴t̴.̴ ̷A̴n̸o̵t̸h̷e̸r̸ ̵h̸a̵l̸f̵ ̶w̴i̷l̸l̵ ̴l̶e̸t̷ ̸y̴o̶u̸ ̷s̴l̸e̴e̸p̷." And all her energy drained, yet Bryhildr carefully caught her and laid her down.
"Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite."
[—-]
Frederick paced in front of Chrom's desk as the Exalt and future Queen looked at the knight worried.
"Lissa is currently with Emmeyren and Phila. They are talking to each other. But..." he glared at the 200 page monster of documents, "I have to read through all this. Robin, what on earth did you say to her to make her write all this?"
"That's my secret." Robin winked, "But in all seriousness, just use my magic glasses." She put the, on him.
"Robin, how long did you know about Emmeyren being alive?" Frederick suddenly turned to them, "And Lissa also. You two didn't seem surprised when it was revealed."
"I only found two weeks ago." Robin sighed, "Lissa told she found out when Alm asked her to heal Sophia. Believe me, I was just as angry as you when I found out but once I read the report," Chrom's face was morphing to a variety of emotions as he was reading it, "I understood why she did it."
"That still doesn't justify for hiding that Emmeyren was alive!" Frederick gritted his teeth.
"Frederick, I understand you are angry, but for now, I think you should read this." Chrom handed him the document and the glasses.
"What's this?" He asked as he put the glasses on and began to flip through the documents.
"Sophia explaining what went down during her time in Plegia. What the Grimleal did to her and the country. The plans she made and spies she had pass information to us. As well as why she hide Emmeyren. I can tell a few things are missing so I can only guess they are personal. Lastly, medical records of Emmeyren's conditions." Chrom sighed as he intertwined his hands together.
"What are your thoughts?" Robin asked as Frederick was going through emotions as he was reading the document, "Sophia, Lysithea, Henry, Derrick, Tharja, and Morgan all did what they believed was right. While their form of executing their plan was questionable, they did it for a good reason." She sighed.
"Sophia is willing to get her hands dirty." Frederick whispered, "Even if it meant others would hate her for it."
"Exactly." Chrom sighed, "I don't agree with this. I am beyond grateful she saved Emmeryn but what I don't like, just be reading the report, the number of steps she went to do it. She's destroying herself and she doesn't care." He looked over to his future wife, "We'll talk to her tomorrow. I have a feeling she went to one of the inns in the town."
"Most likely." Robin said, "Will you be alright Frederick?"
"I...I need some time alone." Frederick muttered and the couple nodded, letting the knight leave.
The man was silent as he walked, tired as he tried to organize all the thoughts shuffling in his head. He didn't know whether he should be angry or disappointed. Sophia hid a truth, one that affected them all. When he saw Emmeyren jump, of course, he was hurt. He was beyond devastated. When news reaches Martha, he thought she would go on a rampage but all she did was shut herself away. He needed time to process everything. As for Sophia, would he be able to trust her? Chrom and Robin had already informed him that she would be working with the rest of the Shepards in building the military fleet.
"I don't know..." he muttered and went to the palace garden.
He stared at the place, old memories of the past when he, Emmeyren, Martha, and Albert would play along with Chrom and Lissa. The older days were never returning, even if he wished it. He sighed and about to walk away till he noticed someone was in the canopy. He carefully walked up, the closer he got, he saw someone was laying on the side window. He could hear light breathing and walked in. He was greeted with the sight of Sophia, fast asleep on the window side. The man sighed and knelt, carefully observing her face. The scars from the war covered the right side of her face, her eyes were a bit red, she was most likely crying. The man sighed as he carefully picked her up into his arms. He left the garden, walking down the hallways that led to the Shepards' quarters. He looked down at the woman's arms and sighed. Perhaps his emotions are conflicted but there is no doubt he has grown fond of the woman, much to his dismay.
"We'll speak to each other properly in the morning."
