Sophia sighed as she sat at a table and was reading a newspaper for any interesting gossip going on. The morning in Ylisse was somewhat lively as people were opening up their shops and buying breakfast. She was surprised to learn printing existed in Ylisse thanks to advances in magic tools. She currently was at a cafe with Yune, who happily ate her pancakes with whip cream, powder sugar, and strawberries. A cup of warm milk to finish it off. For her, an iced coffee, cheese omelet, and a green tea cake. Some of the waitresses were cooing from afar as they watched Yune eat happily her food.
"Mama!" Sophia looked up from the paper, "So, are we going to live at the castle?" Yune said and Sophia gently wiped the whipped cream off her lips with her napkin.
"No, we'll be living somewhere else." Sophia said and internally winced when she saw her wings droop, "But it'll be close to the castle so you can see the others!"
"Hm...alright." The girl sighed, "By the way, can we visit Morgan? I have yet to see him."
"Sure." Sophia nodded and took a sip of her coffee when they heard the bell o the door of the cafe ring.
Frederick walked and looked around, and waved once he spotted them. Yune waved as he walked over to them and Sophia nodded, her way of allowing permission to sit with them. Yune smiled and spoke.
"Morning Sir Frederick! Are you here to talk to Sophia?" She asked and he nodded, giving her a small smile.
"Yes. Your mother," Sophia almost spit out her coffee, "spoke to me and Chrom regarding living arrangements." He turned to her, "I spoke with Martha and she has agreed. However, she has conditions."
"Alright. What are they?" Sophia said and Yune looked at them confused.
"The first one is to pay 7 silver each month, for rent." He said, "New rooms are going to be built into the house because your students will also live there. Second, you and your students are to clean up the place without magic. The final condition, you will be part of an investigation mission that will take place in a few months." He finished and waited for her to speak.
"Okay, I accept," Sophia said and Frederick blinked multiple times.
"Just like that? I thought you would have more questions. Especially regarding the third condition." He said and Yune was confused but decided to continue eating as she listened.
"Frederick, I'm part of the Shepard's now. I have to earn my place among you all. I have no problem cleaning and paying rent. And sooner or later I would be sent to missions with you all. So I don't mind." Sophia smiled softly but he was still a bit hesitant.
"We're getting roommates?" Yune asked and Sophia nodded, "Can we meet them?"
"Oh! That's right! That's why I also came to get you!" The knight stood up, "You will be meeting your team today at the castle. As well as meeting Miriel and the higher up of the Church of Naga." And they stood up to head to the castle.
"Hey, Ma!" Yune said, "Can I go to the Knights' Quarters? I want to see Alm." She said and Sophia nodded.
The girl excused herself and flew off to the direction of the castle and waved goodbye. Sophia sighed softly and nodded to Frederick for them to head out.
"Question." Sophia said as they walked, "Are you the one that carried me to the guest room?"
"...Yes." Frederick coughed, "I found you asleep in the garden. I couldn't just leave you there. One, it would be unfitting for a knight to leave a maiden alone in the dark, and two, you would catch a cold." He said and Sophia raised an eyebrow at him.
"Maiden? You think I'm maiden?" She said.
"Did I offend you?" Frederick asked and Sophia shook her head.
"No. It's just my first time being called a maiden. Hmm...It feels...nice. Like a warm cup of tea." She intertwined her hands together, "Hmm...I like it." She smiled softly as she looked ahead.
Frederick chuckled a bit as they continued to talk.
"Frederick." She stopped and the knight turned her way, "The other day, you said that I am always on edge and that it's different from yours." She took a deep breath, "You're right. I'm over paranoid. I don't know how to relax." She admitted.
"The reason I'm like that is that how I lived in my homeland. Then there was my time in Plegai where I was made to live like a noble. It was my first time experiencing the life of a noble. The number of times I survived assassination attempts and poisonings, not to also mention learning the politics of Grimleal and Plegai...made me jump over the edge." She chuckled a bit nervously, "Is it weird that I sleep with a dagger under my pillow?"
Frederick's eye was a bit wide but smiled softly and shook his head.
"Not at all. Gauis sleeps with one under his pillow and so does Cordelia." He chuckled and Sophia knew Gauis would but Cordelia?!
"I have many questions regarding why Cordelia sleeps with one but that can wait for another time." She said and they two quickly went to the castle.

The meeting would be taking place in the throne room. The place was much bigger than she imagined and of course, the leaders of the new Military Corps were present. All the Shepards along with Martha and an unfamiliar face. A man in about his 40's, wearing the holy clothing of a high-ranking priest, dark brown hair and brown colored eyes, the Brand of Naga on his headpiece, but the gaze he had, seemed cold. She looked around and saw Derrick, who had a bit too much of a bright smile and was dressed in the red and blue armor of a knight. He waved and Tharja looked like she was being blinded by the light. But, Sophia didn't miss the small blush on the Dark Mage's face. She was going to have fun teasing her later. Chrom sat on the throne with Robin beside him on the queen's throne. Sophia took a deep breath and nodded.
"Thank you all for gathering here today." Chrom spoke and the others nodded, "Today, I want to introduce a familiar face who we have decided to become the General of the Medical Team. Four individuals from the Alchemy, Magic and Religious Apartments have been chosen to be part of this team and to be under their apprenticeship." He motioned towards Sophia, "Introduce yourself."
Sophia nodded and did a polite bow to all.
"Greetings to you all. While I didn't exactly give the best impression when we first met, today I like to start a new one. My name is Sophia Zunino. I am a professional doctor and I am honored to be chosen as the new general for the medical team. I hope we get along." She smiled as she looked up to them.
The Naga Priest narrowed his eyes at her and spoke.
"If I may, what class are you?" He said and Sophia could just hear the judgment hidden in his voice.
"I am the Saint Class." She replied and just for a moment, his eyes widened, and gave a small nod.
"Finally! I have been wanting to speak to you again!" Miriel stepped up and held out her hand, "That spell you cast a year ago. The formula and fundamentals of it were very interesting. I am Miriel Shura Vlem of House Vlem. I am also the head of the Magic Academy and Department. I look forward to working with you." She nodded and both shook hands.
"Pleasure is mine." Sophia smiled, "By the way," Miriel cocked her head, "are you the one that created the magical writing tool use for communication? I must admit, I was very surprised to see a printing tool here in Ylisse. They are common in my home and often used for communication. And the magic formula used on it was that of the matrix. Applying what you want to do and how it functions." She explained and Miriel nodded.
"Yes!" She nodded and before they continued, Robin coughed, making sure they remembered where they were, "Ah right...Back to the topic, these students I chose, I see much potential in them. All they need is a push. Be sure to show no mercy on them." Said students in the other room shivered.
Martha walked up and smiled, her fangs showing she spoke.
"The students I have chosen, I too see potential in them and want them to improve. And like Miriel, do not show any mercy." Martha grinned.
The last person to walk up was the priest, who did a polite bow and spoke.
"My name is Firotheus. I am a High Priest of the Church of Naga. I have heard of you only from rumors but I yet to make my judgment. The students I've selected, do teach them well." He said and Sophia felt Bryhildr twitching in the back of her mind.
"I don't like this man. His gaze reminds me of an old mage I despise." The Deadlord muttered and Sophia knew she needed to watch her back.
"I look forward to working with your students." Sophia smiled.
"Alright!" Robin spoke, "Let us introduce them! Martha, you start!"
Martha nodded and snapped her fingers, the door to the throne room opening. 12 students walked each from a different department and already Sophia was feeling dread when she recognized a few students from the Magic Department and Church of Naga. The first ones to recognize her were Martha's students, Annette, Marienne, And the twins. Martha walked up and smiled.
"These are the students I have chosen. Annette of House Dominic. The girl is a bit on the clumsy side, " said the girl turned red, "but she is a hard worker and I see she just needs some motivation." She smiled.
"Next, is Marienne of House Rigel. She enrolled in my department 3 years ago. While she doesn't do much magic, she has great healing capabilities and a knack for finding rare elements." Marianne shifted a bit nervously and looked away.
"Lastly, these two are exchange students from Ferox. In the past, as tradition, Ferox and Ylisse would exchange students to study in their respective countries. These two were chosen, James and Ray." The twins smiled nervously, "Children, this is Sophia, your teacher and General of the Medical Team."
The four students looked at her shocked and then looked to Sophia, who just smiled. They were probably thinking about the time they were talking to her and said a few things they were concerned about the new general. Sophia didn't blame them, it's natural to be nervous.
"Now," Miriel nodded and went to stand beside her students, "these are my students from the Magic Academy. While they can be a hard bunch, they mean well." She nodded, her signal that they could introduce themselves.
"I, Lorenz Hellman Gloucester of House Gloucester, am honored to be allowed to work for the royal medical team! You shall not be disappointed, Lady Sophia!" An awful bow cut of purple hair, the color purple, and wore the uniform of a warlock, yup, that was Lorenz alright.
If Sophia had an award for the most pompous noble of all of Ylisse, that award would go to Lorenz. Not only was she stuck with him as her student, but the second most annoying brat she was given to teach is also...Mirabelle's brother, Seigel. The boy had blonde-colored hair tied into a long braid, green-colored eyes like his older sister, and the uniform he was wearing was that of a Wizard but color dark green. The boy's attitude towards her felt hostile not to also mention the tension that the Mages and Alchemist had towards those that were sent by the Church of Naga.
"Thank you Lorenz for that introduction." Sophia sighed and looked at the two remaining students of the Magic Department, "Please introduce yourselves." Seigel refused to speak even if he flinched at the glare he was feeling at the back of his head from his sister.
"Alright." Long flowing silk smooth frown hair, emerald-colored eyes, and wore the dress of a Plegian Dark Mage, "My name is Dorothea Arnault. I am from Plegia Dark Mage but also a songstress and dancer. Nice to meet you." And she winked.
Unfortunately for her, the only reactions she got were an eye roll from the twins and wary looks from the others. At least Lorenz gave her a polite nod. She was honestly looking forward to seeing the girl roast the boys. However, Sophia noticed how the priest frowned and narrowed his eyes at the girl.
"My name is Seele Yura Askai. I am from Chon'sin." Seele was a cute young girl, the same age as Morgan.
Light blue colored hair with purple highlights, her hair was tied into a ponytail. She wore a black coat with a blue shirt underneath, and what was most intimidating was that the girl's staff, could turn into a scythe. Scythe users were rare in Ylisse and more commonly known in Plegia and Valm. Seele may have a cute personality but Sophia caught a glimpse of her sadistic side when Lorenz wouldn't shut up.
"Thank you, Seele." Sophia smiled and looked over to the four students that were selected by the Church of Naga.
Firotheus walked up and spoke. Sophia immediately noticed how tense three of the students became as the man spoke.
"These four, I have chosen. I believe a bit of reality will get them into shape." He said and Sophia felt sorry for them but agreed she would teach them well.
Her eye twitched when she saw a certain green-haired mage was asleep standing up.
Linhardt.
The boy has dark green colored hair, part of it framed his face, and the rest was tied in a small ponytail. The clothing he wore was that of his time-skip self but the current boy was that of the academy phase. She sighed and decided to move onto the next one.
"Oh great..." pink-colored hair tied in twin rails and bangs that stopped just belong her eyebrows.
Pink colored eyes but a lazy personality, and the clothing she wore was that of a war cleric. The girl only smiled and spoke.
"Hello! I'm Hilda Valentine Goneril of House Goneril of Ferox! Nice to meet you Teacher!" Sophia knew she was in for a massive headache for the next few years of her life.
The next student was another one from Plegai but was raised in Ylisse. Choppy brown colored hair, dark blue eyes, tan skin, a scar across his nose, and a bit of sassy attitude. He only waved and Sophia pinched the bridge of her nose. Martha could be heard in the background cackling.
"Aether." That was all she said and Sophia nodded.
The last student was a young girl who looked around 16 years old. She had aquamarine-colored hair in two long braids that stopped at her waist, gold eyes, light peach sink, and wore the dress of a sage.
"I'm Liliana Apocalypse of House Apocalypse. Nice to meet you." Her voice was just barely above a whisper.
"These are the students you will be teaching." Chrom said, "In a few days they will be living with you in the Mage's Quarters. The place is currently under construction but for now, Miriel has a classroom open for you at the academy." He smiled and Sophia nodded.
She turned to her students and spoke.
"I'm going to make myself very clear to you all." Her tone held authority which automatically made them all stand straight, "The knowledge I am going to pass down to you is very difficult. I don't expect you all to get it right away. What I do expect is from you all is to ask me for help if you do not understand a certain subject or if you feel you are falling behind." The students all blinked confused because no teacher of theirs has ever said that they could ask for help, "I am very different from the traditional teachers. I'm a foreigner, my customs of teaching may seem strange to you all but strange is good." She smiled softly at them.
The students again looked at each other confused as those like the priest was not liking what she was saying.
"My methods are strict, at times they will make you cry. I will be harsh and not hold back in criticisms. If you can't take criticism then you have no place in my class." Many looked at her with wide eyes but she continued to speak, "Criticism may cause you to fall. It can cause you pain, however, the fruit of that criticism is that you grow." She cupped her hands together and made a Celica flower but appear in her hands, "A flower can not grow with just sunlight. It needs to be cared for, watered, and such. Like knowledge, you learn. You take your time. You don't rush. And eventually, " the flower bloomed, "you will see the fruits of your labor."
"As you heard from your leaders, we will be the Medical Team of the military. However, as time goes by, more members will become part of this corps. You 12 have been selected to be the first to gain these advanced skills and eventually, you will also be the leaders that will teach the recruits. But just because you are tasked with saving lives, does not mean you won't be in the front lines. I'm sure you all known of the recent war the land had." They all nodded, "Good. Because I will also be teaching you combat."
"Excuse me what?!" Firotheus yelled, "They are Healers! You can't expect them to be in the front lines! They must be behind!" He said and Sophia only looked at him with a blank gaze.
"Sir," She turned to him, "You see just a healer. I see potential and the ability to surpass. Let's take, for example, Hilda." The girl stiffened, "She has amazing capabilities as a healer but if you pay closer attention, she also has the potential to be an amazing Wyvern Rider, Magil Knight, or even a Griffon Rider. The axe..." she grinned, "Has more than one use after all."
"Finally! Someone gets me!" Hilda raised her hands but quickly went quiet at the glare the priest was giving her.
"They are my students now, and I have every intention of preparing them not just healing but also the front lines. As a doctor myself, I have been in the front line multiple times. I had to heal people when they were injured and had to fight to defend myself and my people." She said and looked to the student, "If you don't believe in their potential," she looked back to him with cold eyes, "then you've failed them as a leader."
Martha was enjoying how red the old man was becoming. She truly enjoyed seeing him get a taste of his own medicine. She's witnessed the man talk down to students and seen the favoritism he has towards those he has taken a shine to.
"Are you really a Saint Class? I have never seen such nerve of speaking." The man spoke coldly and Sophia only laughed.
"I may be a Saint Class but that doesn't mean I'm a Saint."

After the whole introduction, Sophia along with Miriel and the students went to the Magic Academy. To arrive at the place, they needed to go through the Magic District, a 30-minute walk. Of course, the students could have used their magic tools, such as their brooms, staffs, Linhardt had a damn magic carpet, but Sophia wanted them to get some exercise. It was her first time walking through the Magic District and already she was thinking she landed in Diagon Alley. Some shops sold magic tools and materials. Stores that sold, tomes, staffs, and ingredients. Stores that sold textbooks needed by students and another that sold clothing and armor made for those that use magic. Stalls that sold food and potions. Stalls from vendors that came from all around the land. There was even a cosmetic shop, which she didn't miss Hilda, Seele, and Dorothea eyeing it with a hungry look.
"Is this your first time here?" Miriel asked and Sophia nodded.
"I still haven't explored the whole city yet." Sophia stretched a bit and saw her students were looking at the different shops, "Hey kids! If you need to get something from the shops, go ahead."
"Umm...Are you sure?" Liliana asked shyly as Siegel rolled his eyes.
"Well don't mind us!" Dorothea, Seele, and Hilda all said quickly and darted to the shop that was seeking make-up and clothing.
"Are you sure that was a good idea?" Miriel raised an eyebrow at her.
"Might as well." Sophia shrugged and smiled, "Besides, after what happened earlier today, they needed to let loose a bit."
Miriel hummed as they continued walking till they arrived at the gates. Tall black metal gates like the one you see in mansions surrounded the academy. They opened, allowing them to come in. The Magic Academy was a large building with a bell tower at the center. A giant water fountain, and forest surrounding it.
"I'm curious. Why is the Academy built near the forest?" Sophia asked and Miriel began to explain.
"Magic Academies, regardless of what country, are built in areas where the Earth Veins tend to be thick and strong. The Magic is purer in areas where there is less human civilization. You didn't notice but once we reached the end of the Magic District, there is a Warp Tile that Mages need to step on to be teleported to the forest. The Magic Academy is actually at the top of the mountains, where the forest is. A normal walk to the place would take four hours." She said and Sophia nodded.
"That explained why my body felt...lighter..." She muttered and Miriel did not comment on that.
"Anyhow, we better go in. I already made arrangements for which classroom you will use. It also has a magic lab so you should use it well."
The inside of the building was built a bit similar to the inside of the castle minus all the fancy decorations. It almost reminded her of the London tower buildings. The halls were wide and spacious, students walking and scurrying to their classes. Magic objects floating around in the air and the occasional kid flying in the air. Before they could say anything, Sophia heard footsteps running towards her and turned, only to be hugged slammed.
"Mama!"
A flash of red was all she saw before felt someone slam into her chest, knocking the air out of her lungs. Yune squealed as she hugged her tightly, her wings flapping a bit. The students, all shocked as they witnessed this, and Miriel's jaw hanged. Sophia took a deep breath, after recovering from that slam, gently patted her head.
"Y-Yune, what are you doing here?" Sophia asked as she looked at her daughter.
She wore the uniform of the mages. A black robe, a witch hat, and her wings stuck out from the back.
"I snuck in!" The girl gave her a toothy grin and Sophia wanted to faint, "I got lost looking for Morgan. Can we see him first?!"
"My Lord..." Miriel fixed her glasses as she walked up, "I have never seen manakete like you. Are you a relative of Nowi?" And Yune quickly hid behind Sophia.
The girl cooed at how adorable she looked and Sophia sighed, petting her head.
"Miriel, there's another reason I wish to speak to you." Sophia said and the woman looked at her confused, "May we speak later in your office?"
"Of course." Miriel nodded, "I'll take your students to the classroom. In the meantime, why not visit Morgan? He has spoken a lot of you. He should be on the third floor, lab room number 108." She said and the woman nodded.
Old school elevators pulled up by gears and chains existed, she was glad she didn't have to go on the stairs to reach the third floor.
"So," she turned to her daughter as the elevator went up, "how exactly did you sneak in without the guards seeing you?"
"I just dug a hole under the fence and went in." Sophia groaned loudly and shook her head.
"Please don't ever do that again." She sighed, "I want you to be careful."
"Mom, I'm not Nah." Yune said and Sophia looked at her confused.
"What do you mean? What does Nah have to do with this conversation?" Sophia asked and the girl realized she spoke too much.
"Hey!" The bell rang, "We're here on the third floor!" And she quickly ran out before Sophia could ask any further questions.
She walked out the hall and saw multiple doors that led to rooms. They walked together,p down the hallways made two turns to the right till they reach door number. They nodded to each other and knocked.
"Come in!" They heard and opened the door.
The inside of the lab looked chaotic. Books scattered on the floor and in piles on the table. Shelves with some books sticking out. The walls had papers connected by strings. Pictures of different locations as well as a diagram of different brands of dragons that have existed over the years. Morgan's back was facing them as he was sitting at his desk, writing down notes and monitoring a flask with a blue liquid in it.
"I apologize if I am overworking again Lady Miriel! I'm currently working on this potion." He says and turns around, "I promise to get di—!" His eyes went wide once he saw who had come.
"Surprise!" Yune cheered and blinked in confusion when the boy suddenly fell to his knees.
He tried to speak, his voice came out in broken tones as he was trying to form words. Tears formed in his eyes as the young girl walked up to him
If anything, Morgan's reaction to meeting Yune was not what Sophia expected. The boy's reaction was one of shock, horror, relief, and a mixture of joy. Yune smiled softly and cupped his cheeks, grinning.
"Morgan!" The kids hugged each other tightly, Morgan's voice became sobs, "I'm so happy to see you!" It was honestly a sweet moment.
"I...I thought I lost you..." the boy whispered as she wiped his tears.
"Hehe! You ain't getting rid of me that easily!" The girl grinned, "I may be short but I'm a spitfire ready for action!" He chuckled as she helped him stand up.
"I hope you haven't been causing Miss Sophia trouble." He chuckled but it slowly died down once he saw the older woman looked so tried and his friend, was beaming.
He wondered if she knew that Yune was her daughter. He looked to his friend and spoke.
"What did you do?"
"Jumpy Dragoon Bombs!"
"I didn't teach her how to make explosives," Sophia muttered and Morgan sighed.
"I know...It was Henry and your future self." Sophia pulled out her flask and just gulped the whiskey down.
"Anyhow," Sophia sighed as she wiped her mouth, "I'm glad you two are reunited. Just...don't do anything too crazy while I go speak to Miriel. Alright?" And Morgan nodded.
"We won't!" Both kids smiled and Sophia waved at them but stopped when Morgan called out her name.
"Teacher!" She turned to him and hesitated but still spoke, "Do you know that..." Sophia nodded.
"I do." She smiled softly to them, "Morgan, thank you for watching over her in your time." And she left.
Once the door clicked closed, they wait a few seconds. Morgan smiled and turned to Yune, who had a mischievous grin. He knew that grin like the back of his hand. He had so many questions but he decided to wait. For now, he wanted to enjoy his time with his friend.
"Want to learn how to make an even bigger Jumpy Dragoon Bomb?"
"Hell yeah! Explosions all the way!"
Far away, the future kids shivered now that two of the most mischievous kids have been reunited.
[—-]
When she arrived at her class, the students were all seated down. Linhardt sat far in the back because he wanted to no be caught sleeping. Annette, Seele, and Liliana, bubbly personalities, sat in the front. Lorenz and Seigel sat together in the middle. Marianne and Hilda sat together on their right. The twins, James and Ray on the left. Dorothea sat a bit towards the window with Aether behind her. She could sense the tension in the air. One, she feels the animosity from Seigel towards Dorothea and Aether because they are Plegians. Looks, like she is going to have to shut down immediately.
"Good afternoon everyone." She said as she walked to her desk.
"Good afternoon." They responded and she nodded.
"I didn't exactly get a chance to properly introduce myself earlier so now I shall do that." She placed her hand over her heart, "My name is Sophia Zunino. I am a professional doctor and as I said earlier, a foreigner." She did a closed eye smile, "Any questions?"
The fact everyone raised their hand sort of unnerved her but she would answer questions.
"Okay." She clapped her hands together, "Hmmm...Annette, let's start with you?"
"Why didn't you tell us you were a Shepard?!" The girl screeched and the twins along with Marianne nodded in agreement, "We spoke to you so normally! And...and the things we said!" She covered her face in embarrassment.
"Now, Now." Sophia chuckled a bit, "It's okay to be wary of someone new. I don't blame you all. Besides, I took no offense when you and the others said you were worried about why Martha chose you and what type of person I am. It's okay." She smiled and Annette was still unsure but nodded.
Linhardt raised his hand again.
"Yes?" Sophia said and the boy spoke.
"Do you have Brand?"
"Seriously?!"
"Linhardt come on?!"
"Oh, Linny and his study of dragons."
"That was rude!"
"Can you stop studying for one minute?!"
"Yes." Sophia answered and the student's eyes went wide, "I...recently found out I have one." Her smile became strained, "Unfortunately it is a subject I do not like to talk about. Hope you understand." And the boy nodded.
"I...have a question." Hilda raised her hand, "Is it true that you will be having us train should we need to fight in the frontlines?" She asked and Sophia nodded.
"I am. And," she smiled as she crossed her arms, "I will be having three of the Shepards helping me evaluate you all." They began to whisper and mutter to each other, "Since there are 12 of you, I'm going to have you all spilt into groups. You all will be sparring us."
"WWWWWHHHHHAAAT?!"
"The reason for this is for us to evaluate your combats skills. This will allow us to identify your strengths and also weaknesses, which we will work on to improve. Healers do need to be in the front lines and ready to defend themselves should they come in close contact with an enemy." She held up a dagger and spun it, "The first step is teaching you all how to properly wield daggers. Archers carry one should they enter a fickle. This is the same case with Mages and useful skill." She explained and turned to Dorothea.
"Dorothea," the girl raised an eyebrow, "You said you are a dancer, correct?" The girl's eyes glimmer, "How would you like to learn to use chakrams?"
"Professor..." the girl leaned forward on her desk, "are you offering me personal lessons?"
"As a fellow dancer, yes I am." Sophia smiled and Dorothea squealed.
"Great." Seigel rolled his eyes, "Are you going to teach a Plegain?"
The class went silent and Sophia's eyes became a half-lidded gaze.
"Seigel."
Her tone sent a shiver down his spine as she uncrossed her arms, "Let me tell you all a story." She sighed and sat on her desk, "A long time ago, there was a girl. The girl had lived a harsh life in her home. Yet to keep her mind off the negative things, she would read books. The girl loved reading books of fantasy. Her favorite story was of the prince and tactician who defeated the Evil Dragon. The girl loved reading with her friend about their adventures. How they defeated the evil king, how they defeated the evil on conquering." She muttered and looked to the back of her left hand.
"One day, there was an earthquake in her home. The earthquake was huge, to the point she ended up in the sea. She nearly drowned. When she woke up, she was rescued by a mage and a couple and their son. It took a while for the girl to recover but once she did, she learned that she ended up in the world of the fairy tale she loved." She opened her eyes a bit and they remained silent.
"However, the girl works up in the enemy country. The country is ruled by an evil king. The girl was shocked and was in denial but eventually accepted her reality. She became friends with the mage and eventually learned to adapt to the new land. However, the girl was afraid. She knew of the future. The mage she met was one of the future allies of the prince. The girl knows war is coming but she does what she can from the shadows to help the prince and tactician. However, an evil lurked and the darkness and had their eyes on her. It is eventually revealed the evil mage that serves the evil king, used a dark spell to take her away from her homeland." The children were whispering to each other.
"The evil mage threatened to kill her friend, the family that saved her, and the entire village if she did not fight for him. The girl has left no choice but to join. During that time, she learned of how greatly the people ruled by the evil king were suffering. She secretly aided the people from the shadows. They began to call her Saint. During those times, the girl realized that the enemy country and the country of the prince were more alike than they thought. Both were damaged greatly. Both suffered injustices. Both held grudges against each other for the same reason." She went silent for a few minutes.
"I know Plegai suffered just Ylisse and Ferox. But just because someone is from Plegai or any other place, does not make them an enemy." She spoke and looked up to them, "If you judge someone based on their religion, race, the color of their skin, physical appearance, and so on, then you are no better than the insects that caused pain to others." She saw how red-faced Seigel turned and the boy was about to bark back but she raised her hand.
"I understand very well why you hold a grudge. After all, you were held hostage by King Gangrel and Aversa. However, two people do not represent a whole country." She stood up, "I will not tolerate discrimination in this class. There will be consequences if I catch you doing that."
The students remained silent but nodded.
"Good. Now time for your evaluations."
"WHAT?!"
[—]
The training fields of the academy were built for magic users and unfortunately wasn't meant for the type of combat she wanted. So, they went to the training field near the Knights' Quarters. Her students followed behind her and when she opened the doors, they were greeted by the sights of the half passed out recruits.
"Damn Frederick! Go easy on them!" Sully laughed as she gulped down her water, her lance in her hand she spun as she knocked down a paladin in training.
Alm was easily keeping up with Frederick's movements as he jumped back, holding his training lance. He jumped back when Severa came at him from behind with her training katana and curse when Vaike suddenly appeared behind him with his axe.
"Got you!" The man yelled and slammed the axe down at his chest.
The young man fell and grunted, upset that he but sighed as he looked over to the blonde man.
"You win." He said and Vaike helped him stand back up.
"Your movements are still stiff." Frederick walked up to him, "When fighting, you need to watch your back. I noticed you have a knack for brute force but you must realize that just because can use magic like a dark knight, you are also vulnerable." And Alm nodded, sighing as he ran his fingers through his hair.
He turned and smiled softly when he saw Sophia and Frederick noticed.
"Hi! Hi!" Sophia giggled as she waved, "Did I come too early?" She grinned and before the knight made move, Sully already did.
"Hey!" The red-haired knight walked up and held out her hand, "Name's Sully! We didn't get to meet properly at the camp a few months ago but good to meet ya!" She grinned, "Welcome to Ylisse! So, what you got? I spot fresh meat." The students quickly huddled together.
"Students. I need to see what their strengths and weaknesses are so I figured I get them to spar a few of you along with me." Sophia explained and Sully nodded.
"Mind if we help?" Frederick spoke and now the kids were even more scared, "When we train recruits, we often have them spar against us to see what needs to be worked on." He looked over to them and almost smirked once his eyes landed on Seigal, "You wouldn't mind if I have Lorenz and Seigal spar?"
"Not at all." Sophia beamed and suddenly Vaike grinned.
"The names Vaike! Good to see you're better! Teach her will teach them a lesson they never will forget!" Vaike nodded and Severa and Alm also raised their hands.
"So, how do want to do this?" Severa said and Sophia looked over to her student
Frederick: Seigel, Lorenz
Severa: Annette, Dorothea
Sully: Liliana and Seele
Vaike: Hilda, Ray
Alm: James Aether
Sophia: Linhardt and Marienne
"I'll be having you all spilt into groups of two. Each of you in pairs will spar against one Shepard. Linhardt and Marienne, you are with me."
The first spar was Seigal and Lorenz again Frederick. Of course, the boys were nervous but the knight was going to hold back on them. Lorenz and Seigel both had their strengths in using lances and magic. However, Lorenz was more used to using dark magic and Seigal white magic. Both had the talents for riding however, Seigel's weakness was his defense. Lorenz unfortunately was horrible at a close encounter, physical strength. Both had too many openings and could be killed quickly if they were in a real battle. Frederick knocked them down to onto their behinds and did not leave a detail behind on criticism. Dorothea along with Hilda covered their mouths because they were enjoying the boy's pride be shattered to dust. That joy didn't last long.
Severa like her father showed no mercy at all. The twin tail may be swordsmen but she also specialized in magic. Sophia hadn't seen the girl in action yet bit seeing her now, she was amazed. The movements of her sword were graceful and swift, she made sure to strike all openings. Annette's strong points were Dark Magic, using an axe, and her authority. She could become a leader, just needed a little push. Dorothea on the other hand was seething. Her sword was being countered each time, Severa made sure to comment each time that her swing was too low or too high. Or as of she was applying too much weight. Dorothea was a dancer so Sophia knew that her pride was being hit with the critical comments Severa was saying. Again, both got knocked down and she took note of what needs to be worked on.
Liliana and Seele. Liliana was a magic-user who tended to over-exert herself. She either used too much or too little magic. Her movements were slow and she didn't properly know how to control her magic. Seele thrust her lance as if she was killing someone, she was swift, but her lack of working with her partner made it her downfall. The girl could be cocky and that got in her way. Seele preferred to charge head-on alone.
"Looks like I need to work hard on both." She mumbles to herself as both girls slumped as they dragged their feet back to the benches.
The next ones were Hilda and Ray. The pink-haired girl pretended she was struggling to pick up her staff and smiled at Ray.
"Can you make this staff feel lighter? It feels so heavy, Ray-Ray." She smiled sweetly and the boy groaned loudly but did it anyway.
The staff glowed a bit and now it felt lighter and she thanked him. Ray used two wooden swords and Hilda was using her staff.
"You wouldn't attack a sweet girl like me, now would you?" Hilda did puppy dog eyes and unfortunately, Vaike fell for it.
Her smile turned from sweet to wicked when because she used that opportunity to lunge at him. However, Vaike immediately adapted and spun his ax, using it to knock the staff out of her hands however the girl quickly switched tactics, her fist met his jaw and that blow was going to leave a bad bruise. Ray quickly took the opportunity that Vaike was recovering and charged at him, the swords crossed, magic entering the wooden blade made Sophia narrowed her eyes. Feroxi warriors were known for using axes, hammers, even bare fists for combat. Swords were mostly used by mercenaries. Not to also mention that the technique the boy was using was similar to Felix's techniques. Looking closer...
"Heh." A smile formed on her lips as both kids were knocked down, Hilda whining that he went too hard on them, "I think I just found a potential Mortal Servant."
The next group was Aether and James against Alm. The young man seemed to hold a sort of anger towards them because the stance he was taking was aggressive. She wondered if he knew them in his future. Perhaps a different route they took in the future. Aether was using martial arts to fight and Alm was also fighting him back the same way. Meanwhile, James wore special gloves that allowed him to properly use his magic. He channeled mana into his right fist and his left hand held a wooden axe. The boy put much weight into one hand. Alm quickly elbowed them both in the stomach and then did a swiping kick under them, knocking them off their feet.
"Aw! That hurt!" James whined and helped Aether get up, "I think I'm going to have a few bruises tomorrow."
"You'll live." Aether muttered and looked over to Alm, "Those martial arts...those are the style of the Sand Tribe of Plegia. I am surprised someone from Ylisse knows it." Alm was silent, "Uh...It's kind of rude not to answer."
"Give him a break Aether. Maybe he's shy?" James said and both jumped back when the ground underneath his right door cracked a bit.
"Sophia." Alm suddenly called out, "I'm going to take a break." And he left, Severa following behind him.
"Frederick." Sophia spoke and the knight looked towards her, "Do...you mind checking on Alm? I feel he seems more comfortable around you." She smiled softly at him.
"Hilda. Seele." Whispered Dorothea and Seele, "You seeing what I'm seeing?" And the pink-haired girl nodded and whispered, "Oh I see it."
"I'll go see if he is alright." The knight nodded and Sophia watched him leave the training grounds.
This was the first time in a while that Sophia felt anger coming from Alm. Of course, the first time was when they first met in Ferox. Their talk at the park at night, the anger that he had in his voice towards her. Again, she wondered what her future self did. She hadn't met all the children yet but she wondered if bridges were burned as they grew up. She wondered if perhaps the students she has now, all took different paths. For now, the mystery would remain. She walked up to the field and Linhardt and Marianne stationed themselves on the other side. The others were silent as they prepared themselves.
"Since you both use magic, our battle will be a practice magic battle." Sophia said and the two nodded nervously, "Based on what I read on your papers, you both are on the offensive side. Mages, Alchemists, and Healers are meant to be supported. But should the situation arise where you are forced to close combat, I want you to be prepared. Now, come at me." And she raised her hand, creating a giant flame but...
"A-Ah...AAAHHHHHHHH!"
Marianne suddenly began screaming as she grabbed her head and crouched down to the ground. Her eyes wide, hysterical, and full of terror as she kept screaming louder and louder. Sophia quickly made the flames go away and the other ran towards her. The girl was hyperventilating, she wouldn't stop screaming even if the others were trying to calm her down.
"What's going on?!" Frederick's voice could be heard and Sully spotted him, Alm, and Severa running towards them.
"Marie! Marie! It's okay! The fire isn't here!" Hilda hugged the girl whose's screaming didn't die down and was sobbing, "It's okay. It's okay." She whispered.
"The fire...The fire...Make it stop...Make it stop..." Marianne sobbed, "Make it go away!" Everyone except Sophia began to back away once they saw the ground begin to freeze. They began to spread slowly like tree roots, the cracking sound made them shiver. The temperature dropped. Marianne sobbed as she hugged her knees, her eyes wide as if she would leave her body.
"She was triggered." Sophia thought as she ignored how her feet felt numb because of the cold, "Marianne." She spoke softly and gently placed her hands over her ears, "It's okay." The girl didn't seem to hear her.
She could feel her lips a bit blue because of how numb she was becoming. Not also mention the cold. She carefully placed her forehead on hers and began to sing softly. Marianne said she was from House Rigel, the former royal family of Valm. She wondered if the girl had the Brand of Duma. But those questions would be answered at a later time. Based on how the ice is spreading, Sophia got an idea that Marianne most likely released magic when she was angered or upset. In this case, she was triggered by the fire spell she cast.
"On an ocean of stars,
Lo, an angel they see.
Untouched by the war,
That they waged."
The young girl's whimpers were becoming softer by the second. She stopped rocking herself and her body seemed to become less tense. That meant Marianne recognize the song she was singing. Sophia was shivering but she continued. She wondered what caused the girl to have such trauma but it would be disrespectful to just ask her why. No. She needs to take her time and earn her trust.
Laid low by their scars,
A people wounded, but free.
Seek what lies beyond,
This dark age.
"Good. She's starting to relax." Bryhildr muttered in her mind, "Keep focusing on her. I'll enter her shadow and absorb her negative emotions." And Sophia felt a small tingle as Bryhildr left her shadow and entered Marianne's.
The dullness in Marianne's eyes was starting to fade. The fear was being replaced with confusion and worry. Yet Sophia kept singing as she noticed the ice begin to melt. That was a good sign.
The seasons they turn,
Winter to spring.
Dulling the pain and
Erasing the sting.
The seasons turn,
Summer to fall.
Time's warm embrace
Begins to heal all.
She finished the last tune softly and heard a soft sigh, however...
"Oh, my~" Dorothea, Hilda, and Seele covered their mouths and giggled as the young girl hugged Sophia and fell asleep on her chest.
Sophia didn't know if she should move or if she just became a second main character in Snow White because even small birds began to gather around the roof of the buildings.
"Hmm...Mama..." Marianne muttered and Sophia felt her face turning red as she slowly looked over to the others.
"Help me..." She squeaked and Alm quickly covered his mouth and turned away while the others were holding in their snickers at the sight.
{-}
He felt sick.
He quickly excused himself and began to walk and it turned onto a full-on sprint and ran. Severa and ran after him and she knew where he was running. It was his favorite hiding spot when he was a child and there was a chance Lucina was there also. The boy jumped over the fence and buildings, scaring away the birds and cats that slept on the roofs. He didn't care. He didn't care at that moment. He needed to getaway. As he ran, the image of Sophia and Marianne sleeping on her chest was replaced by a woman on her knees, tears falling down her face as she held onto a body of a young girl. The body of the girl, glowing faintly like coal about to burn out. Her hand reaching out, yet the woman held it despite how it burned the skin of her hand. The young girl, her body was not that of a human, but like coal. Cracked and slowly dying out like a fire. Her glowing eyes, the light dying out she smiles sadly. The woman, singing a soft lullaby and her voice dyed out as the girl turned to ashes. The image kept flickering and flickering black and white. This time it is James and Aether but instead of full of life, their skin is rotting away, eyes glowing as they were surrounded by corruption.
He never once forgot the look of pure rage that befell the face of Sophia and his father as they roared, cutting down their once friends and students that were turned to Risen Monsters by Grima and the Deadlords. He never once forgot how much Annette wailed when she killed Dorothea who was turned into a Vestal Witch. He never once forgot how Lorenz cried for days when Marianne died. Seele letting the darkness take over her and then sacrifice herself to save Hilda and Ray. Seigel screaming as he desperately tried to keep his elder sister alive. Liliana being captured and burned alive, turned to witch. Then having to be cut down by her husband. Linhardt...committing suicide. He wasn't there but when Miriel discovered he had thrown himself off a cliff, he never forgot the scream Martha and she unleashed. He was home but it was brought back memories of the war. Bringing back painful memories of regret and guilt.
He panted as he jumped down and ended up in the garden. The flowers blooming, the sweet scent of rosehip tea filled the air as he walked toward the gazebo where he spotted the unexpected. Lucina gritted her teeth as her hands shook, the needle she was holding when through the cloth she was trying to make a design on. Robin chuckled softly and saw Morgan was struggling to do the same. The table had lemonade and a few snacks set out for them to eat. He turned away, not wanting to ruin their moment with their mother. The only one missing was Margret. He jumped from roof to roof till he reached the lake that was behind the castle. But that was not the place he was aiming for. Deep in the woods behind the castle, was an old cave. He prayed the place was still there. He let go a sigh of relief as he arrived at an overgrown vine area. Carefully he moved the vines away and found the old stairs that led underneath. Unfortunately, he didn't notice someone was following him.
[—-]
The place always brought a sort of tranquility to him when he felt he was going to have a mental breakdown. The crystals on the walls were still small, compared to how big and shiny they were when he was a child. This place, he and Lucina had discovered it when they were around 10 years old. They had followed their mothers into it and found them practicing dancing and singing. He continued to walk till he reached the end of the stairs. Bestowed upon him was a giant lake with blue crystals on the lake bed that made the place glow blue. He let go of a sigh as he knelt and gently touched the water.
"Still cool to the touch." He smiled a bit.
"Huh. I thought I was the only one that knew about this place."
Alm whipped around quickly and slipped, about to fall into the water when a hand grabbed his wrist and pulled him up. His eyes met deep blue ones, the same ones as Lucina.
"Greetings Alm. Careful there." Chrom chuckled and the boy felt like he was about to have a heart attack.
"How did you know I was here?" Alm asked as he let go of his wrist and Chrom gave him an unsure smile.
"You...aren't exactly quiet when you run on the roofs like an assassin. One of the birds you scared slammed into my office window, scaring the life out of me, Gauis, and Viron during our meeting." And Alm groaned as he turned away, burying his face in his hands in embarrassment.
"I am so sorry Lord Chrom..." Alm muttered and Chrom shook his head.
"Just all me Chrom. Besides," he looked to the lake, "It seems something was bothering you. I would always come and hide in this place when I wanted to be alone or was upset." He closed his eyes, "Who would have thought someone else knew about it?" Alm grumbled to himself.
The prince turned his head towards him, noting he looked stiff and tense.
"Something is troubling you." He started and saw Alm's grip around his sword tightened, "Alm if you need someone to talk to, I don't mind lending an ear. I've noticed you become frigid and tense whenever Yune, Frederick, and Sophia are around. I won't pry you for answers. Speak when you are ready." He said he Alm gulped.
"Speak when you are ready."
Those same words were said to him years ago by his father, by Lord Chrom, by Robin, by Lucina...by...his mother. He wanted to cry. He wanted to cry and break down so bad but he wouldn't. He wanted to scream and kick like a child but he didn't. His breath shuttered as he spoke.
"Sophia...reminds me of my mother." Chrom turned to him shocked, "Yune reminds me of my little sister. And Frederick reminds me of my father." He had to tell certain lies to not blow his cover, "I...I thought I could handle being here in Ylisse but..." his voice cracked, "The city is only making painful memories resurface. It...I couldn't do anything to protect my family. They're gone...They're gone...Ylisse is my home. I have so many happy memories here yet...Just seeing it all without them...I..." he took a deep breath, "I just want to get away from this place."
Chrom was silent and turned to the water, and sighed a bit.
"Alm...I...my condolences." He muttered and gently patted his head, "It's been difficult hasn't it?" The boy nodded, "If you feel you need some alone time, feel free to come here any time you want."
"Thank you..." Alm muttered, "Lord Chrom...can I ask you something?" The Exalt nodded, "I want to be away from Ylisse. May I ask your permission to be dispatched on missions?"
"...I think Gauis would appreciate the help." Chrom nodded, "But as of now, there aren't many. But...how do you feel about traveling to the County of Themis?" He smiled a bit, "We need someone to get the work done in reopening the mines."
"I'll do it." Alm said, "I um...I know a trade." A.k.a, in the future, I was trained by Anna.
"Haha!" Chrom laughed a bit but nodded, "It's a bit strange but you remind me of Frederick when he commits himself to something. You also remind me of Sophia when she can get a bit stubborn." He sighed and turned towards the stairs, "Alm, Ylisse will always welcome you. I'm sure one day, the pain you feel will dull and instead of that pain, you will be filled with happiness." He smiled softly and left with a small wave.
Alm waited till he was gone I let go of a sigh as he sat down. Careful, removed his mask, the reflection of a young man with spiky brown colored hair, light tan skin, and brown eyes stared back at him. The dark circles under his eyes showed he hadn't had a good night's sleep in months. The colored brown eyes were a disguise to hide the real color. One day, when the time is right, he will reveal who he is.
"Mom...I wish I could tell your past self that I'm here."
