viii. Consoling Heartbreaks
Hogwarts Third Year
Scorpius Malfoy was happy. And when he's happy, Lyarra's happy. It was Scorpius' first year in Hogwarts and both of them was excited on what was to come.
"Don't worry Scorp, It's going to be fine." Lyarra patted her brother's shoulder as he followed her along the platform.
She was very happy as both their parents, Draco and Astoria, had accompanied them to Diagon Alley for his first year. She wasn't jealous as she found her brother was happy with their family arrangements-- Nobody was left behind, not like her first year. They had enjoyed their day as Astoria got Lyarra and Scorpius pretty new dresses and robes, while Draco had gotten them books of their liking.
Lyarra was almost skipping as she walked through the platform with her family, much to their amusement. She had written a lot of letters throughout the Summer to her Slytherin friends and a special someone, which she wouldn't name.
Not more than fifteen minutes Draco and Astoria said their good byes to their children as Astoria looked sickly and needed to rest because of her body. Lyarra promised Scorpius that they can sit together in the compartment.
She was looking for a familiar blue haired seventh year as she pushed her trolley out of the way, but stopped when she saw a familiar blue haired boy... Snogging... A pretty blonde girl behind a pillar.
"Mum! Dad! Teddy's snogging Victoire!" James' voice was heard throughout the platform as he tattled to his parents. He was disappointed as they did not react strongly, but he noticed the still body of Lyarra Malfoy as she watched Teddy and Victoire break from the kiss.
She looked devastated, and before James could even process, she had ran inside the train like a frantic madman, leaving the younger Malfoy spawn confused and alone in the platform.
James had frowned as the usual happy-go-lucky Lyarra Malfoy had fled the scene, and paid no mind as he went to bother his brother with outrageous stories that didn't happen and Hogwarts.
"Stay away from Lyarra Malfoy," James warned at his brother as they got inside the train.
"Lyarra Malfoy? Draco Malfoy's daughter?" Albus asked with a frown at the familiar name. "Out of all the untrue stories you have told me?"
"This one's true, Al. She's the bane of my existence. Just stay away from her." James advised as he patted his younger brother's shoulder and left to find his friends. Albus was left confused.
James had talked a lot about Lyarra Malfoy in the span of his two years at Hogwarts. He first started his story how he met a pretty platinum blonde haired girl at Madam Malkins back in first year. Also that year at Christmas, he had become furious when he found out the girl was a Malfoy. Albus wasn't surprised. There wasn't many kids with platinum blonde hair as potent as the Malfoy family.
James then proceeded to go on and on and on about how the girl was annoying and painfully Slytherin Lyarra Malfoy. James was a very biased Gryffindor and Albus could partly blame his mother and Ron for that.
Ginny and Ron had told them stories of their own youth and how much the war had affected them. The two had particularly been very vocal on how Draco Malfoy had treated the Weasleys throughout the years.
Harry didn't dislike Draco Malfoy like he used to, after the war. He had helped pardon the Malfoy family and distanced himself from his old schoolmate. Albus secretly knows that the Malfoys had done something to help Harry along
the war, since both Lucius and Draco were one of Voldemort's top Death Eaters.
Harry didn't bother to correct Ginny and Ron though. The two were very opinionated and their minds were hard to change.
Albus snapped out of his thoughts as Rose Granger-Weasley had caught up to him after saying her good byes to her family. The two were the same age and were about to start first year together. As the two caught up on their Summer, they went on to find a compartment.
Rose noted that it was important for them to find the right compartment as their parents had met and become lifelong friends there. The two went on and walked along the hallway, with fate leading the way of a new lifelong friendship.
Lyarra had ran and left Scorpius behind. She had promised him that they could sit together, but the aching pain in her chest couldn't be controlled as she struggled to get herself together.
It was pathetic. She thought she had a chance with Teddy. He was so nice to her. He doesn't see her as a Slytherin, nor does he see her as a branded 'Death Eater' Malfoy. He saw her as Lyarra, and appreciated all of her conversations and stories that she shared with him.
When he kissed her that god awful day she was elated, and had developed a crush on him. It grew and grew each day as they had spent last year as what Lyarra would think as close friends. They had studied together at the library. They would walk along the hallways as they met in between classes. They would write and exchange letters throughout the Summer too. She even had a special blue box reserved for his letters.
Teddy was special for Lyarra.
She was pathetic for thinking that she was enough and could be something more with him. Of course the now seventh year would have a girlfriend. Victoire Weasley no less, a very pretty, now fifth year Gryffindor who was a quarter veela.
Sometimes Lyarra was jealous at her because she was that beautiful and kind. Since Teddy was very close with the Weasley-Potter clan he had introduced Lyarra to Victoire last year when the two were walking along the hallway and met Victoire by accident.
Lyarra should have known the way Teddy had gazed lovingly into her eyes that Victoire had captured his heart even then. As the two talked, Teddy had forgotten Lyarra was there until Victoire had asked Lyarra a few questions which she replied happily.
She was not mad at Teddy for not liking her back, but she was disappointed for herself to not see the signs sooner to save herself from the heart ache. Victoire was a nice choice and Lyarra would be happy for Teddy if he wasn't her first crush.
Lyarra washed her face and stared at her sullen self in the mirror. She had been in the lavatory for too long, but she can't bear to see Teddy if he were to be in the train, since in his last letter he had told her that he was now Head Boy. Her eyes were swollen as she shed a couple of tears, and heart clenching as she suffered her very first heart ache.
He was too nice to her, and the one she could blame for her heart ache was herself.
Scorpius sighed as the fiery red headed girl had left to find another compartment. It had to be his platinum blonde hair. Lyarra was lucky she had same aged friends that had been friends with her before her first year. Scorpius had no one.
He was hopeful as the boy in front of him stayed inside the compartment to accompany him, even if his cousin had left.
"Scorpius Malfoy--"
"Albus Potter--"
They had introduced themselves at the same time, trying to break the awkward tension. It was a surprise for both of them that the other was from a well known family.
"Nice to meet you," Scorpius said politely, offering a handshake which Albus took gratefully.
"You too,"
And that was the start of Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy's soon to be long lasting friendship as they bonded over stories and sweets.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't good ole' Slytherin princess, Lyarra Malfoy."
"Go away, Potter." Lyarra snapped, not looking away from her compartment window. She had finally gotten out of the lavatory and was lucky she found an empty compartment, gazing out of the window, feeling hollow, until James Potter's voice which she recognize disturbed her peace.
James was thrown off by her hoarse voice. She sounded very off.
"Are... Are you good?" He asked softly, unsure with himself why he even bothered with Lyarra Malfoy.
Lyarra only hummed lifelessly. "What does it matter to you?"
James shrugged, but awkwardly noticed that Lyarra hadn't even looked at him. He answered truthfully, "You look... Dead."
At that she turned around and gave him a lifeless stare.
"Whatever. Just get out and continue to ignore me like you usually do." She waved him off.
"Merlin, you're so... Sulky. Ugh." James crossed his arms. "You're acting like someone broke your heart or something," He mumbled. Apparently Lyarra had heard since she whipped her head around to face him and cringed.
"Godric, you really are," James said, disbelief at himself for guessing correctly. He was also surprised that Lyarra Malfoy looked this... Empty.
James racked his brain on who the bloke was. Was it her fellow Slytherin friends? Who was it, Nott or Zabini? No, no, they were like best friends. Lyarra treats them like friends. The only other guy that came into mind was--
"Teddy?" His eyes widened, "You like Teddy?!"
Lyarra actually looked pained at that, and bit her lip. She really didn't want to be chastised by James Potter out of all people.
"But... Teddy is--"
"Nice? Kind? And has a girlfriend? Yes, I know, Potter. Just today, apparently." Lyarra snapped. James actually went silent.
"I feel so dumb right now, I should have seen it." She whispered to herself.
James apparently heard it, and he did not know why but he felt some slight sympathy for the Slytherin.
"Well, I did not know until today either," James shrugged.
"You didn't?" Lyarra raised an eyebrow.
"It was a shock for me as well to see Vic and Teddy... Snogging." He cringed. "Everybody wasn't surprised... Well I guess now if you think of it, they were pretty close during the Summer. Maybe the two got together then,"
Lyarra processed the information slowly. James didn't know Teddy and Victoire were together until today too. She guesses the Weasley-Potter clan already saw it coming so they brushed it off. Somehow she felt better.
"Thank you, I guess..."
The two were silent after that, as if last year's incident didn't happen. Their relationship was interesting. James had hurt her, but she moved on in her life and forgot his wrongdoings. James was a jerk to her because of her house and her family name.
In stalemate, differences in views aside, they get along pretty well and have a lot in common. Both were ambitious in Quidditch, and both are children of famous figures of the Wizarding community. Lyarra found it amusing that James could get along with her yet not get along at the same time.
But if they were fighting, it's hell for everybody.
"Uh, I got to go." James said awkwardly as he scratched his messy hair.
"Okay... Good bye, Potter." Lyarra said softly and resumed her zoning out the window again, but now with a slight smile on her face, one that James Potter noticed as he closed the door to the compartment to find his friends.
