Hey everyone. I'm sorry for being away and for the shortness of this chapter. I've been working super hard on my debut novel that my hands are getting sore from typing. I will try and make the second chapter longer, and for now I hope you enjoy this tiny offering.
Evie knew she was being stared at, but she didn't care. She kept her gaze fixed on her reflection as she glided her makeup brush across her eyelids. One of the best things about being off the Isle was the unlimited supply of makeup. And when it ran out, she could order more! It was mindboggling, and she had to use all her restraint to stop from grinning whenever the thought entered her mind.
"Who did you threaten to get put in here with me?" Audrey demanded, her eyes narrowing.
Evie made a show of rolling her eyes and applied another coat of eyeshadow. She could feel the anger bubbling in the other girl and knew it wouldn't take much for her to explode. Heck, she hoped she would.
"I'm talking to you."
"And I'm ignoring you." Evie replied, keeping her tone casual.
"Do you have any idea of the—"
"Power your family wields. Yes, I do. Would be hard not to with the amount you talk about it." Evie said, sighing as if the entire conversation bored her.
Evie placed her brush down on the dresser and appraised herself. Her foundation could have been blended more and her eyeshadow applied more evenly. She had a few strands falling out of her twin braids and her lipstick bled out of the confines of her lower lip. She pulled a face and glanced at the clock. If frowning didn't cause wrinkles, she would have a deep on etched on her features. As it was, she pushed out all thoughts of the stuck-up princess she roomed with and her irritating nattering in favour of slipping out of the chair.
She had pulled out all the stops for today. Her lower body was encased in a pair of tight black matte leggings with a pair of heels that were covered ion a bright red spider web pattern. Her top was a deep blue peplum top, with a black leather jacket over top of her. She pursed her lip and brushed out imaginary wrinkles before turning her attention to Sleeping Beauties scion.
"Look. I will be out of here soon enough. Just do your best to deal with it and not look appetising, okay?"
"Appetising?" Audrey asked, her voice shaking.
Evie just winked before strutting over to her leather bag and throwing it over her shoulder. She blew Kyra and Tynan a kiss before strutting out, her smirk practically glued to her face as Audrey's wails floated after her.
Jay didn't bother to stifle his yawn. He had thrown his legs on the table before him and leaned back, his arms folded behind his head like he was on vacation. The crew had left the dining room 10 minutes ago and were relaxing in the classroom before their goodness, good? Good something class started. Jay didn't care, no amount of teaching would stop him being who he was. He was rotten to the core and was proud of it. He embraced it, using it to cultivate his identity. Mal sat stiffly beside him, her hand gliding over the page as she sketched out a fierce dragon chowing down on what appeared to be…Audrey?
Jay didn't say anything, just smirked, once again taken by his girlfriends' talent. A frown pulled at his features. Could he even call her his girlfriend anymore? After the mess that was him declaring his love for her like an Auradon sap? The sensible part of him knew he was being ridiculous, but the deeper part, the part that truly did love Mal as deeply as someone with his experience could love someone, worried.
"You like?" Mal asked, sliding her paper over to him.
He forced himself to focus. Her skill was undeniable, and the gory detail made his lips twitch. Still, his heart felt like it had been hollowed out, and he wasn't sure what to do about filling it in. "I do. Very detailed." he said, offering her the smile he knew made her heart skip a beat.
A small smile pulled at her lips and the usual steel that guarded her eyes softened. "Thanks," she whispered, reaching out to take his hand.
For a moment Jay considered pulling away. It would serve her right after making him look like an idiot. Still, even as he was contemplating the words, he knew he wouldn't. He was too far gone. Instead, he took her hand and threated her smaller fingers through his bigger ones and offered her that smile once again. She returned it, giving his hand a squeeze for good measure. She opened her mouth the speak, an uncharacteristic vulnerability shining in her gaze. He refused to let himself hope, as that's the only way they get crushed.
The steel soldered itself as quickly as it melted.
Jay fought the urge to snort as his eyes trailed over to the door. Evie sauntered in, a playful smile on her face and a seductive sway to her hips. Jay knew it was bad, but he couldn't help by appreciate her figure as she strutted down the middle of the classroom like it was a runway. She met his gaze and winked, the action making a smirk pull at his lips. A faint growl next to him made the action fade, and he squeezed Mal's hand in reassurance.
"There ye are, lass. We 'ere begin'ning tae worry," harry teased, winking at her playfully.
"Speak for yourself. I think your brains waterlogged," Uma muttered, shooting Harry a stern glare.
Harry shot her a playful grin, which thawed the anger written over her features. She rolled her eyes playfully, before leaning back into her seat in-between Gil and Harry.
"Aw, did you miss me, Harry?" Evie cooed, fluttering her eyelashes teasingly.
"Yes Harry, did you?" Uma asked, her voice thick with warning.
Harry chuckled. "For ma safety, imma 'ave tae say nay, lassie." He said, winking at Evie and removing any sincerity his voice held.
Evie giggled; the sound akin to a bell. Jay met Harry's gaze and shook his head, unsure whether the boy was brave or just stupid to rick the wrath of his girl. It was common knowledge on the Isle that Uma and Mal had the worst tempers of anyone, and to see Harry push his girl was a nerve wrecking experience, even for a boy who had jinn blood flowing through his veins.
Evie shook her head playfully, before sauntering to the empty space between Carlos and Jana. They greeted her, getting a small smile in return. Jay watched her, looking for any sign of the stranger that inhabited her body the night before. Finding none, he relaxed, knowing he needed the energy to get through this lesson and to try and sort things out with Mal.
