Red and orange hues colored the sky as night began to skim the horizon. Reflections dazzled the ocean beautifully, creating the perfect end of summer for a certain blonde. Nothing could compare to the two months she spent with her two best friends and current boyfriend. Spending day in and day out playing her favorite sport, soccer, while nights were spent lounging around on silent sands keeping warm with a few bonfires; wishing the days weren't over just yet, but alas, all things had to come to an end.
"Why does summer have to be over already? It's been so perfect, I've never felt so free." Quinn stated as she leaned back into her boyfriend's chest, wrapped in his embrace, gazing at the stars. Their small group circled around the fire.
"I know what you mean Q, I am not ready to be separated from my partner in crime, So damn unfair that you have to go to our rival school!" A latina girl commented from the left of the couple, downing her soda quickly. "I mean, come on, you're our best damn player, who the hell is gonna be able to keep up with me?" She tossed her bottle into the makeshift recycle bin.
"What about me, San?" A tall blonde, who was beside the latina, commented with a pout.
"Of course you can be, Brit-Brit," the latina said as she smiled softly to the blonde beside her.
Quinn observed her friends fondly. "I really am going to miss you both, but you know why. My mom just doesn't want me to play soccer anymore." She spoke softly before gazing back at the night sky that was lit up by millions of stars. "So she found a school that doesn't have a girls team…" She received a squeeze from her boyfriend.
"You're honestly better than all of those boys, I wish you were staying as well." He kissed the side of her head and laid his chin on her shoulder. "Think about this: at least you can still watch me,"㇐he received a glare from the spicy latina㇐"I mean watch us at our games."
Quinn smirked. She knew her friends didn't really approve of her current boyfriend; especially since they never hid their comments. "It's just not the same. I want to find my star, find my way and play all I want." Her arms were outstretched to the stars in the sky, her fingers flexing toward them.
The taller blonde giggled as she leaned down, grabbing her drink and holding it up. "To Q, I hope you find your guiding star, to shine bright with and for you!" The blonde downed the whole glass bottle in one go, startling the tanned girl in the process.
"Woah, slow down there, Brit," the latina took the bottle away despite the taller blonde having already finished it, "That's your third soda, I don't want to bring you home sugared up. Your mom's going to kill me!" The latina tossed the bottle into the bin. She pulled her phone out, noticing the time. "Shit, sorry Q, we gots to go. It's already eleven and I gots to get Brit home." Said blonde began giggling again causing the dark haired girl to roll her eyes. She stood up, helping the jolly girl stand.
Quinn looked at her friends, smiling softly. "Alright San, text me when you get her home and when you get home as well." The latina nodded, escorting the other to the car, leaving Quinn with her boyfriend who had been awfully quiet.
She turned in his embrace, peering up to his face. "You've been quiet?"
He sighed. "Yeah, it's still surreal don't you think?"
Her face scrunched in confusion. "What is?"
Looking down into her eyes, he softly spoke, "That this is the last day we'll spend together. It feels like we've been in this other reality and now it's time to return back to our real lives." He loosened his arms leaning back on his hands. "Quinn, I… I want to break up."
Quinn leaned away from the boy. Her eyes widened in shock, her mouth suddenly dry.
"It's been amazing with you but it's my senior year and you're no longer at my school so, it's logical that I find someone else. I need someone to match me physically and mentally, someone who can help me begin my future. Not hold me back."
Quinn stood quickly, distancing herself from him. "You're telling me that I'm just a pawn in your,"㇐she gestured to his sitting self㇐"Life? Just another useless possession and now that you had me, you're done?" She placed her right hand on her hip, her other raised and pointing to him, "Jesse you fucking ass, I taught you how to play, you knew nothing before you met me! Fucking asshole, after this whole damn summer spent wasting my time with someone… with someone who… FUCK!" She threw her hands in the air.
"It's nothing personal, honestly it was good practice for my next role." Smirking, he stood up and dusted the sand off himself. "Really, Quinn, you are beautiful; that is no lie and you have brought me much popularity. I thank you," he bowed.
"Screw you, St. James!" She rushed forward pushing him to the sand. "I can't believe I wasted my time with you!" Quinn held in her tears, not wanting to show the boy how much he affected her.
She stormed off to her car, I'm so glad I decided to bring my car. Getting into her red bug she drove off leaving the love she thought would last.
Quinn pulled into her driveway, noticing a few lights on. She sighed. "Great, she's still awake."
Grabbing her keys, and bag from the back, she quickly walked to the front door. Taking a deep breath she walked in hoping to avoid her mother, but the second she placed her foot on the stair a throat cleared. Her lips strained into a smile before turning to face her mother. "Mom, hey, what are you still doing awake at this time?"
Her mother stood with her arms crossed, tapping her fingers. "Lucy, you are sixteen years old with a curfew of eleven. It is now twelve thirty, don't you dare give me that look." She placed her hands on her hips in frustration.
Quinn couldn't help rolling her eyes. "It's the summer, mom, and it's not like I was doing drugs or drinking!" She ran her fingers through her hair, irked.
Her mother shook her head, closing her eyes. She let out a heavy sigh. "This is why I'm sending you to McKinley. They don't have that ugly sport thing you play and they have wonderful curriculums." She gave her daughter a pointed look after glancing at her daughter's dirty clothes. "Plus you won't be with those… those friends of yours," she spoke with disgust.
Quinn bristled at her mothers tone and clear dislike for her friends. "Well you know what Judy? I'm glad I'm staying on campus. Means I get away from your bitchy attitude!" She stomped away up to her room, ignoring her mother yelling for her to come back.
This is not fair. Why is she such a bitch! I mean, we're free from the tyranny of my despicable father… Why can't she just accept me for who I am and what I love to do! Tears cascaded down her cheeks as she threw her bag to the floor, throwing herself on her bed. She faced the ceiling. Honestly, my life would be so much easier if I was a boy…
Sighing, Quinn gazed upon the stars on the ceiling. It was a little something that her older brother had painted for her when she was learning about galaxies and planets. Amongst the stars, though, a thought occurred to her. Wait, what if I am a boy and prove to everyone I am capable, I am a great soccer player, better than any boy! I mean, no one knows me at this new school! She immediately shot up, her heart feeling lighter.
"I need to call Kurt!"
