"Do you want to see a picture?" Her face completely lit up.
"Of course, I would!" I pull out the phone I replaced my old one with- to keep in touch with Jacob- and open up the photo gallery of Renesmee.
Alice held it gently in her hands like she was carrying a newborn. Her eyes were so concentrated on it. They wavered, darting a little. If she could cry, she would.
"How...she's beautiful! She looks just like Edward." She commented that slightly oddly. She was flipping through them quickly, but long enough for her vampire eyes. "But if you just had her...?" She says, looking up. The photos went from when she was born to present day.
"...that's only part of why it was hard. Not only was Charlie looking for me, calling and coming here to search for me. But the elders of the tribe weren't happy I knew about the wolves. When they met me, I was already looking to be five months along." I sighed.
"You see, Renesmee developed fast. And I told them it was Edward's. I had to. Some of the elders know Dad and I couldn't let them tell him where I was.
Renesmee didn't stop growing fast after she was born. I named her after Renee and Esme, mixing the names together."
"She'd love that," she said distractedly.
"They watched me because they had no idea if I was carrying an actual baby or some kind of monster. They're still watching. I managed to cut a deal and got them to agree to us only staying until she reached puberty. Or what looks like puberty. She's only two now but she looks like that.
Alice... I have no idea if she'll still be here when I'm old. I'll have to watch her grow old and bury her. That's why I wished you were here. Maybe Carlisle could've helped, know something. If he was here, I would've gone to him."
"I don't think he would've been able to do anything, Bella. Maybe research, deliver her, but nothing else." She answered.
"I figured. But it would've been preferable." I paused for a second. "I went through the birth by myself. I mean, Jacob and Emily, a friend, were there but...I wish Renee or Esme, or Carlisle were there. I would have felt safe. But I didn't.
Alice, I've never felt safe here. Even after she was born, there was a chance they'd kill her. That's why they're still watching us. For her to make a mistake." I confessed.
Alice's distracted look returned.
"But Jacob won't let anything happen to her. He's been there for me through all this. But he's also imprinted on her."
"He what?!" She started cursing under her breath. "We shouldn't have left. I knew we shouldn't have. I hate...everyone. I know Jacob is your friend, but I hate him too."
"Don't worry. I'm still annoyed that happened. But it can't be helped. It keeps Renesmee safe from them for now, at least."
Wait a minute. If she was his mate, even if she made a mistake, they can't kill her. But if she slipped, would they make the exception?
"I have to tell everyone. I mean, if you're okay with it?" Alice said, breaking me out of my little reverie.
"Edward...should know. I guess."
"Bella, you don't understand. He'd be happy to hear about it! Then extremely angry, self-hating, and sad. He's been depressed this entire time, rotting away in some dump somewhere in Rio! He's even started planning to see the Volturi in hopes they'd kill him!"
"What?!" She nodded.
"He hasn't decided on it because he's trying to decide what's a worse punishment. Living with the guilt and missing you or dying now. So, if I tell him, he'll come here,"
I wasn't sure what to say, or what to think. I simply couldn't imagine a world where he didn't exist. I didn't want to live in it. I knew it was stupid to still love him, I was ashamed a little of that love remained, but-
"But...he meant what he said, Alice. If he came, it's not for me." But I supposed that wasn't that bad. That's why I didn't keep him a secret from Renesmee. In case he'd take care of her in the future when he runs into her. A decade or century from now, if she did stop growing or that part of her vampirism kicked in. I could only hope so. It was the other extreme than dying soon but living forever was preferable to that. She would have more time. She'd have a chance to fall in love like I once did.
"That's something you two would have to talk about." She said, then sighed. "The others have to know, not just because she's biologically related but because if the Volturi found out, they'd come for her too. For all of us. If Victoria is vengeful enough, she might go tell them." I froze in my seat.
"She wouldn't! Why does that even matter? What does she care about me? She shouldn't, I'm just human and Edward already left?" I near shouted.
"She might be thinking that going for Edward's mate is the better punishment. Since he killed hers." Alice said. I slammed my back against the backrest of my seat.
"Alice,"
"Plus, I don't know if the wolves can handle her. She wasn't alone in my vision. She was passing your shirt around to others."
"Jacob said they only caught hers, only her scent?"
"Then what I saw is a little farther along. I can't believe I had to wait for her to make a move just to see something about you. Renesmee must have inherited that block you have." She surmised. I nodded. Made sense. I rested for a moment, shaking my head. That one little tidbit could've changed everything.
If Edward did come, then...I'd have to deal with that.
"What else did she inherit? Is she a full vampire? Couldn't be."
"No, half. She prefers blood but she can eat human food and live off that. Her favorite is mac and cheese. She's fast and strong but not as much as a full vampire. She has a gift too. I've kept it a secret from the elders. She can show you things. Memories, or her imaginings. Replay her dreams."
"That's interesting." She said, smiling softly.
"...you could meet her if you want to?"
"Really?"
"Yeah. Jacob won't be happy about it, nor would the elders be if they find out you're here but...yeah. She might not say no either. Alice, you've really helped us out a lot. She didn't miss out on anything and because of you, moving elsewhere was a possibility. I was starting to think about it now that she looks almost twelve."
"Damn the elders. I'm meeting my niece," She said. She quickly moved to the side of my seat, careful not to put her weight on me, and hugged me tightly.
"I'm really sorry I left. I wouldn't have let you go through this alone."
"I'm just glad...you weren't my imagination," I said hugging back. She hugged me as tight as she could without hurting me. I hugged her with all the human strength I could muster.
"Alice, if the Volturi found out about her, what are the chances you'd be left alone?" I asked her when we pulled apart.
"I don't know. But it looks like she might be too busy to do that. Hopefully."
