"You seem happy."

All he did was raise an eyebrow, but Kagome had to control her laughter again.

"Okay, so maybe that's too strong a word, but—" She motioned around the room, then to the gardens below. "—this doesn't feel like an obligation."

He eyed her for a moment, then shrugged, the movement barely noticeable as he walked towards the doorway.

"Not everyone is meant to experience the pain of war," he said, giving her a meaningful look over his shoulder.

Her shrug was followed by a sigh. The year of hunting shards had been rough, but she'd like to think more good came out of it than bad.

"We survived, at least."
