Sesshoumaru raked his claws through his hair, still avoiding her gaze. "Mother refused to tell me who held her affections, but she was—"

"Happy."

"Indeed."

"Was she not with your father?" Kagome winced at the lack of tact.

"They were fond of each other," he said. "Eventually. But Father found what he was missing in the human princess."

The lack of bitterness in his tone made her eyebrows raise. Was this why the brothers had been getting along?

"And you've forgiven him for that?"

"It is unlikely the resentment will ever diminish." Sesshoumaru finally looked up, a myriad of emotions swimming in the golden depths. "But perhaps I understand his reasoning a little better."
