Chapter 1: Another Chance

One Saturday afternoon, Mei and her friends, Miriam, Priya, Abby, Tyler, and Crystal were at the mall.

"So what do you guys want to do now?" asked Mei.

"Let's check out the video store." suggested Crystal.

"Good idea." said Tyler.

And they went into the nearby store, and checked it out. They had a nice time checking out the movies, looking at new CDs, and listening to music.

"Hey guys, check this out. They have a new 4*Town poster." Miriam informed.

That got everyone's attention, and hurried over to her.

"How much is it?" asked Priya.

"It's 10.99."

The teens then checked their pockets.

"I don't have enough." Abby complained, and she silently cursed in Korean.

"I'm out." Tyler replied.

"I have some left." Mei informed.

"I don't." Crystal piped up.

"I've got some." Miriam said.

"I'm broke." Priya said in her monotone voice.

They each bought a poster, and then left the store. But before leaving the others used the money they had left to buy a few magazines.

On the bus home, the friends talked about their favorite band.

"I wish I could see 4*Town live. You guys were lucky you were able to." Crystal told them.

"Well it wasn't a regular concert, you know." Mei reminded.

"Right, giant red pandas don't usually crash the event." mentioned Tyler.

Priya was flipping through her magazine, when she spotted something.

"Hey guys, check this out." she informed.

She showed them a page about 4*Town. It showed that 4*Town was going to have another concert in Canada.

"They're coming back? Seriously?" gasped Miriam.

"Where?" Abby wanted to know.

"It says Ottawa."

"Hey, that's where I used to live." Crystal mentioned.

"It says they're going to be there in four months." Priya read on.

"Too bad, Ottawa's not close by and tickets cost a fortune." complained Mei.

"Yeah, it was hard enough raising $800, and even if we could raise $1,200 how would we even get there?" wondered Miriam.

"Well we don't exactly have to buy them." Priya informed.

"Huh?" asked Tyler, confused.

"It says here there's a contest. Write a 800+ word essay about why you like 4*Town so much, and get a chance to win six VIP tickets to their concert."

"Wow that's quite a prize." said Mei.

"Well even though we have like a one in a million chance at winning, what do you say we do it?" suggested Miriam.

They all looked at each other, and began nodding. After getting the address on where to mail the essays to, they all hurried home and went to get started.

That evening, Mei was hard at work on her essay.

"This is going to be good."

She imaged going to the 4*Town concert with all of her friends. She the boys in their cute outfits, hearing their wonderful singing voices, and Robaire making eye contact with her. This made her squeal, and she poofed into her panda form.

Then there was a knock at the door.

"Mei Mei, it's time for dinner." called Ming's voice.

She opened the door, and poked her head in.

"I'll be there in a minute, Mom."

"Try not to mess up your room."

And she left. Mei turned back into her human form, fixed her chair, and left to eat. At the dinner table, the Lee family ate and talked about their day.

"So Mei, how was the mall today?" asked Jin.

"It was fun, I got a new 4*Town poster."

"That's nice sweetheart." Ming replied.

Before she went to bed, Mei finished her essay.

"There 830 words."

She then got an envelope, put in the letter, and addressed it. Even though she knew the chances at winning were slim, it still felt good she was doing this. She put it next to her backpack, and then went to sleep.

The following morning, Mei dropped off her letter in the mail before helping her parents with the temple.

When Monday came the friends talked about the contest.

"Did you guys get your essays mailed?" Mei wondered.

"Yep, I wrote the full 800 words." said Miriam.

"I wrote 830."

"Mine was 815." Tyler mentioned.

"Mine was 825." Abby piped up.

"My essay was 835." Crystal informed.

"I wrote 820." Priya said.

"I wonder who'll win?" thought Crystal.

"Don't know, but whoever wins is gonna be really lucky."

Then the bell rang alerting students it was time for classes to start.

Days went by, and eventually the teens forgot about the contest. But then one day, Crystal was being driven home by her dad with her younger sister, Amanda.

"So girls how was your day?" asked Alex.

"School was fine." Crystal told.

"Oh, Daddy you won't believe what happened. At recess they put in a new tire swing, and I was the first one to try it out."

"That's nice, Amanda."

When they got home, the girls hurried inside, while Alex stayed back to get the mail. Crystal went into her room, pulled off her wig, and threw her backpack on the floor.

"Whew, what a day."

As she took off her shoes, Lion walked in and brushed himself against her leg. As she stroked his fur, her dad called her.

"Crystal, you have a letter."

She left her room, and got the letter from her dad.

"Now what's this?"

Crystal opened the letter, and to her surprise, there was a letter...and six VIP tickets for the 4*Town concert!

"Congratulations, Crystal Parker; your essay has won the contest and here's your prize of six tickets to the concert." she read.

At first she was so shocked she just stood still.

"Crystal, are you okay?" Alex questioned.

Then Crystal let out an ear piercing squeal.
