Eyes of Gold
It had been two days since the final battle. Naraku had been defeated and the Shikon no Tama completed. InuYasha now sat in Kaede's hut staring at the jewel, rolling it over and over his fingers. He wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Wishing to be a full youkai would cause his heart to disappear and forget about Kagome. Wishing to be human would weaken his strength and cause the Shikon no Tama to disappear making it impossible for Kagome to ever return. To him, both options had bad consequences. He sighed and stood up. He wasn't quite sure what to do. Maybe Kagome would know, he thought. He found her and tapped her on the shoulder. He told her to follow him and she complied.
When they were out of hearing range, Kagome faced him and asked, "What is it InuYasha? Is something wrong?"
"Not really," he responded before lifting up the Shikon no Tama. "I just don't know what to do with this."
"Well you have more than one option. The first one is to become youkai..."
"But I would forget you..."
"...the second is to become human..."
"But the jewel would disappear and you couldn't return..."
"...or you can stay just the way you are..."
"But...," he paused for a second and suddenly realized that he couldn't really find anything wrong with staying a hanyou.
"Besides," she beamed. "Eyes of gold are always best." He smiled then remembered that his mother had always said the same.

Child InuYasha went up to his mother and asked, "What form is my best form?"
She explained, "Eyes of red give more strength, eyes of brown give more heart, but the best eyes of all are gold." He would ask her again and again what she meant but she would always reply," Eyes of gold are best."

Now as he received that answer again he finally understood. It meant that the way he was right now was the best for him. He turned to Kagome and smiled. "Eyes of gold really are the best."
