I'm supposed to be writing literally a million other things but I've been reading so many Dad Severus stories that I needed to write my own. This will eventually include Harry Potter but the first few chapters will be Snape adjusting to his new fatherhood lol.
Full Description: In a different world it's not the child of James and Lily potter that is targeted by the Dark Lord, it is the child of Severus and Lily Snape. Knowing that all is lost Severus Snape devised a plan to keep his daughter safe at all costs. With his sacrifice, Selena Snape will be sent to the person who will provide her with the best protection. When the ancient magic decides that no one other than Severus Snape will do, it doesn't let a silly thing like the fabric of reality get in it's way. Back in the canon world Snape is still reeling from the death of his former best friend. He's just about surviving with his new position at Hogwarts and the wizarding world getting back on it's feet. But when a child appears out of seemingly nowhere his entire life is turned upside down once more.
This will be an eventual Severitus. This man just seems to keep acquiring kids lol
Prologue-For The Love of a Father
So this was it.
This was the end.
Outside the windows the darkness hung heavy. Not even a hint of starlight broke through the black, roiling clouds. The entire house rocked against the unnatural storm. Each lash of wind and crash of thunder reverberated through the whole building, eviscerating the remaining wards.
Flashes of lightning pierced through the sky and illuminated the dark mark that hung there. An omen of death and destruction. The skull gaped open in some twisted facsimile of a laugh and the virulent snake made its home in its jaws.
A shadow swept outside their door. More a wraith than the wizard it may have once been. He moved like a plague: unhurried and lingering. Already assured of their destruction.
He had been too naive to think that they would have more time. That he would get to see his child grow. But these past 3 years had been hell. The Dark Lord had only increased in his wrath the longer that they evaded him. He grew more twisted and insane with each passing day. Until anything human he might have once possessed was well and truly stripped away. And the wizarding world had paid the price.
Entire towns were wiped out. Scores of people were missing and presumed dead. The ministry itself had not been able to stand against him any longer. When the Dark lord himself saw to its destruction, there was very little people could do to stop him.
Now it wasn't due to his immeasurable power like he would want people to believe. Though he did possess a dark yet great ability, he wasn't unstoppable. But he had created such a profound fear in all those around him that hardly anyone was brave enough to ever dare raise a wand to him. And those that were brave enough grew fewer and fewer every day.
But it wasn't just the rest of the country that had suffered. His own family had not remained unscathed no matter how carefully and diligently they planned. The people that they could trust diminished everyday, either through some betrayal or simply death. The fact that James Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin were now amongst those that he could trust unquestionably would astound him for the rest of time. But if this war had done one thing it had made them all grow up and change in ways that they had not really wished to. There was no room for childish rivalries when the lives of the people you loved were at stake. From the very moment that Voldemort had targeted Severus' child, the marauders of old had stuck with him.
All but one marauder that is. Severus would forever curse the day that he ever put any semblance of trust in that rat. While he had not wanted to trust any of them, the others had shown time and time again that they were willing to die for the Order. To protect Lily and his precious Selena. He shouldn't have been so complacent. He should have seen his treachery from the beginning. But it had still come as a mighty shock when Pettigrew had leaked the whereabouts of the Order's hideout.
They had all fought with everything that they had but it wasn't enough. The sheer amount of death eaters that had been sent was enough to overwhelm even the most war hardened and trained soldier. None could withstand the assault and all had fled. But not without casualties.
The loss of his beloved wife had been one of the darkest days in Severus' life. She was struck down with the killing curse mere inches away from the edge of the anti-apparition wards. Mere inches away from his own outstretched hand. He never even got the chance to recover her body before Potter had barrelled into him and side-long apparated them away.
Potter had to tie him up to prevent him from going back there. No matter how much Severus threatened or tried to persuade him the damn Gryffindor had remained steadfast. He nearly went mad with his grief, it was only thoughts of his daughter that kept him going. Severus needed to be enough for her.
But now it seemed even that had run out.
This day had been inevitable from the beginning. With the resistance dwindling everyday there was only so much time before Voldemort found them again.
However, that didn't mean that he was unprepared. Because Severus would move heaven and earth to protect his remaining family. That included invoking ancient magicks that had long been forgotten. In researching a way to protect Selena he had stumbled across a peculiar piece of blood magic.
It was what parents had used to protect their children during the witch trials. Though it had been invented centuries before that. The ritual involved a parental blood sacrifice and should the parent ever die, the child will be transported to the person it deemed the best to protect them. It was considerably powerful magic that could break through all wards, barriers and probably reality itself. According to the tome he had found the ritual in, the spell could reach across the entire world and beyond. Though he wasn't sure what the 'beyond' could entail.
There was, however, no way to predict how the Magic decided who was the best protector. He could only hope that it was someone in the Order who would then know the importance of protecting her. But if she did end up somewhere outside the country she would probably be more safe. If she was in somewhere like New Zealand it would take the Dark Lord years before he eventually found her.
At least he hoped.
With one final onslaught of power-that rocked through the very foundations of the earth beneath them-the wards around the house were destroyed. Severus cradled Selena closer to him and tried to hush her panicked cries.
"Daddy I'm scared," Selena buried her head into his shoulder and covered her ears, trying to shut out everything around her.
"Hush now, little one. It's okay. It's okay," his voice was somehow even despite his own internal despair. It was only his talent at occlumency and determination to his daughter that was keeping him together. He would not betray his fear and scare his daughter even further.
As much as instincts were screaming at him to hold onto his daughter and never let go, he knew he had put her down. With tremendous difficulty, he lay Selena down on her bed. She protested with the might of a dragon but eventually she left his arms. He reached across and grabbed the stuffed animal that lay on the bed. It had been his once upon a time. A worn down and well loved dragon. It had been bright green at one time but over the years it had faded.
He handed it to Selena and she hugged it to her chest with surprising strength. Green eyes stared back at him with more fear than a 3 year old had any right to have and he knew that now was the last time that he would be able to tell her what she meant to him.
"You are Selena Eileen Snape and I need you to know that you are the best thing that ever happened to me. No matter where you go I need you to know that your mother and I loved you with all our hearts." Severus' breath hitched, his occlumency shields failing. His eyes travelled to the charmed pendant around her neck. It was filled to the brim with as many memories as he could fit into it. It was a unique kind of spell that didn't need a pensieve to be viewed. Something Lily had devised. This way Selena would always know how much they loved her and that she will not forget them. "We will always be a part of you and keep you safe."
"You ssshouldn't lie to children, Ssnape," a voice hissed from the doorway. "They sshould know the crueltiess of the world. Just like the resst of uss."
To his credit, Severus did not jump at the sound. Instead, with a composure that he did not truly possess, he rose to his feet and faced the monster.
And what a monster he was. With translucent mottled grey skin and teeth sharpened to dagger like points. Through his many transmutations his face had morphed into something more serpentine and entirely unhuman. A mouth, now unnaturally wider, stretched out into a sick kind of grin. His red eyes glared out cold and mocking.
Severus' wand was strapped to his arm but he made no move towards it. He knew what he had to do. Now was not the time for pointless duels. It was only his death, his sacrifice, that would get his daughter to safety. A Slytherin knew when it was time to stop running. He would not give Voldemort the satisfaction of begging.
"Come now Ssnape. There was once a time when you thought of joining me. It is only the child that needs to die this night. Step aside and I will spare your life."
Severus felt sick thinking how close he had come to joining the death eaters all those years ago. In the beginning they hadn't made their hatred of muggleborns so clear. It was a slow build up as they indoctrinated more and more people. It was a place of belonging for those that saw themselves as outcasts of society. He had been in a very dark place when he was younger and it took a lot not to give it to the sweetened lies that his peers fed him. If Severus did not have Lily by his side he feared what would have become of him.
Severus balled his fists and felt his anger rise within him. His hands shook with the power of his fury and determination. "You must truly know nothing of love if you think for one single second that I will ever leave my daughter's side. My life may be forfeit but in the wake of my death no harm shall befall her, I promise you. I will protect her until my dying breath and even then I will not stop. Because no matter how all powerful you think yourself to be she will always be worth more than you will ever be."
Words had power. No one knew that better than a wizard.
Severus felt a mighty force sweep through him at his declaration. A magic not his own, more ancient and wild, filled with deep emotion. It filled the room and bolstered him in his conviction. It was a swathe of calmness around him and even Selena had stopped crying. He could not think of what this strange magic could be but he did not care. He channelled it towards Selena and strengthened it with all the love he possessed.
Voldemort was so far removed from the concept of love that he did not even feel the rising power around him. He merely tilted his head to the side and narrowed his eyes at Severus' display of courage.
"That iss a pity," he crooned, though his tone said differently. Then with a snarl and a flick of his wrist he lashed out "AVADA KEDAVRA!"
The green flash of lightning found its mark and Severus Snape was no more.
Too ecstatic about his victory Voldemort did not notice the invisible force that began the swarm around the child like a vortex. He did not notice the objects shaking in the room or the tremors beneath his feet. Too assured by his own power he let out one final laugh before pointing his wand at the child and ending this once and for all.
"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
But little Selena was protected by her father's sacrifice and the love that he had given her. The spell rebounded away from her, leaving only a lightning shaped cut in its wake. The Dark lord was struck down by his own spell just as the blood magic surrounding Selena had reached its apex. It swarmed around the child and kept her protected within its constructed walls. Radiating feeling of love and safety.
The magic from the ritual was almost sentient. It deduced that there were few people left that would protect the child as fiercely as her father. With his sacrifice that was no longer an option.
...In this world at least.
But this ancient power had been charged by an unwavering love sacrifice. That kind of power could bend the fabric between realities. If it decided that Severus Snape was the best choice, then there was nothing that could stop it.
With one final blast of power Selena Snape was swept far away, towards the one person who would protect her above all else.
