Author's Note: We haven't checked up on the Heaven and Komui situation for a while, have we? So, here we are. I was going to focus on Komui but it turned into a Miranda-focused key. I have to say it turned out rather well. I am going to have to piece together the Komui situation soon. Give me some time. It will come to me. I do know that Christmas will be focused on Allen. (It has to be because it's his birthday after all.) For now, enjoy this week's key.
Key Thirteen: Lost:
Komui has been missing for eight weeks now. It's going to be hard to keep quiet now. Miranda feels like she is going to be next. She's already starting to hear the whispers about what happened to Komui. Why did he disappear? What happened to him? Did someone spirit him away?
Miranda looked at the card in her hand. At first, she couldn't understand what she was looking at. 2-October 18302110101002C.
What the hell did that mean?
Miranda looked up when she heard a knock on her door.
"Yes?" she asked.
"It's only me," a small voice said. The German angel blinked at first. She got up and walked over to the door.
"Who is it again?" she asked with her ear pressed to the door.
"It's me," the voice said again. Miranda slid the door open a crack. An angel with messy pink hair stood outside in the hall. The German angel narrowed her eyes.
"I'm sorry… Who are you?" she asked.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," the angel said. "I think I got the wrong room." Miranda narrowed her eyes. Has this happened before? She pushed the door open a little bit longer. Her visitor looked so small. Miranda thought that she was looking at a child at first. No, that wasn't a child.
"Who are you looking for?" Miranda asked. The pink-haired angel rubbed their air.
"I forgot," they said. The German angel frowned. Seriously?
"What is your name?" Miranda asked.
"Ed," the other angel said.
"Okay, Ed," she said. "What are you doing out here?"
"I had a message to give someone," they said.
"Have we met before?" Miranda asked. Ed narrowed their eyes.
"No… I don't think so," they said. The German angel shook her head.
"Never mind," she said, waving them off. "What do you remember?" Ed took a moment to think.
"I was sound asleep in my bed and then something whistled in my ear," they said. "I got up and came here." Miranda narrowed her eyes.
"Something whistled in your ear?" she asked. Ed nodded once. Okay, she's heard this before. The German angel shrugged.
"I don't know what to tell you," she said.
"Oh," Ed said. They stood silent for a long moment.
"Can… I help you?" Miranda asked. Ed shook their head.
"No," they said. "I guess not." They turned and walked down the hall. Miranda stared at their back. She didn't go back into her until she closed the door. On the surface, it looked like an honest mistake. But Miranda knew better.
Something's wrong with Heaven. Some of the angels are acting without thinking. This only happened at night. The angels would up and wander around. They would end up in strange places with no explanation as to how or why they got there. She heard the whispers. Miranda wasn't the only one to notice.
"Hey," someone said behind her. The German angel turned to see Ed running up to her. She gave them a curious look.
"Yes?" she asked. Ed caught up to her. They had a serious look on their face.
"I need to talk to you," they said. Miranda was about to open her mouth to speak but they held up their hand.
"Not here," Ed whispered. They looked around for a moment. The angel grabbed her by the wrist and led her out of the hallway.
"Wait!" Miranda shouted. Ed didn't turn around as they kept moving.
They ended up at the library. Ed took a breath before turning around. Miranda tried to figure out what was going on.
"What's the matter? What is going on here?" she asked.
"Can you hear it too?" Ed asked.
"What?" Miranda asked. Ed lifted their chin.
"I heard it again last night," they said. The German angel looked worried.
"Ed," she said.
"No!" they snapped. "Please…" The angel started trembling. Miranda reached out for their shoulder. Ed flinched away. The German angel lowered her hand.
"How many times have you heard it?" she asked.
"Twice," Ed said.
"What did it say?" Miranda asked. The other angel pressed their lips together.
"I can't remember," they said. They turned around to Miranda.
"Do you believe me?" Ed asked. The other held her hand to her chest.
"Yes," she said. The other angel looked like they were going to collapse.
This is becoming a problem that can't be ignored. The higher-ups are seeing that right now. What can they do next?
A meeting has been called.
"There is somebody trying to control us."
"Who is it?"
"Is it monsters?"
"It can't be. There is no way they can breach Heaven."
"What are you talking about? Nothing can breach Heaven."
"Well, something did!"
"Enough! This is getting nowhere!"
"So what do we do? They can't help us. They don't remember anything."
"We could track one of them."
"And then what?"
"Hm…"
"We could exorcise them."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"Great."
"Okay, okay. We need to back up with this. Tracking them sounds like a good idea. We can start there."
"Agreed."
"Right."
"So how many have heard the voice?"
"Eighteen so far. That might boy higher."
"Oh boy…"
The room went silent.
"What else do we have to work with?"
No one wanted to answer that question. That would leave them talking about the endless war, the missing angels, and Komui's disappearance. The latter only left one question that no one wanted to answer.
"Who's going to tell Lenalee?" Nobody had an answer for that. But they knew that she was going to find out soon enough. Frankly, no one was ready for that. They knew the reality of the situation.
Something had to give.
It doesn't end there. Miranda made it back to her room. She noticed something taped to the door.
"Hm?" she asked. Miranda reached forward and took the taped object down from the door. It looked like a small flash drive. A piece of paper was wrapped around it. She pulled it loose and read the message.
"Watch me!"
Miranda quickly looked around. There was no one in the hall. Too late to turn back now. The German angel took a breath and went into her room.
As soon as she turned on the light, she found a surprise waiting for her.
A laptop sat closed on her bed. Miranda froze as she stared at it. Where did this come from? She and the head of Heaven had the keys to the dorm rooms. She should report that someone broke into her room. That laptop could be a trap.
Miranda slowly walked over to the laptop. She reached over and lifted the lid. A dull blue light filled the room. Now, the German angel wasn't fond of technology. She tried to avoid it when she could. But something told her that she had to do this. Miranda plugged in the flash drive.
A window popped up on the screen. There were only three files inside. Miranda narrowed her eyes.
"What is this?" she mouthed to herself. The German angel clicked on a file called Ki. A video file popped up. It only lasted for five seconds. A pair of black hands held up a sign. Miranda shivered as it was long enough for her to read what the person was saying.
You will live in the world we create.
