On the morning of her shower, she woke to find Patrick already gone. He had a lot to do this morning, and she wished that he had let her help with some of this. It was a nice sentiment to take on the bulk of the work for this, but she felt somewhat useless.

Well, that was only amplified as she made her way downstairs to find that her guests had seemingly been awake for some time already.

"Have you guys eaten yet? I should make breakfast!"

"Daddy said he's bringing pasties!"

Jimmy choked on his coffee as the others smiled. "Annie, I think you mean pastries."

"Yeah, he's bringing them home! We don't have to eat a boring breakfast!"

"Hey! Breakfast isn't boring!" Annie just shrugged as her uncles laughed. "Don't encourage her!"

"You're notorious for your balanced breakfast, Reese. What can we say?"

That was true. Every weekend when they were all at home, she pushed full breakfasts. On school days, she always made sure to send the boys off with fruit. Mom had always said a good breakfast meant a good day, and from her experience, that was right.

"Aunt Karen, can we bring Stan Jr. to my room? I want to show him my room."

Karen threw back the coffee remaining in her cup. "Sure. Let's go!"

Annie grabbed Karen's free hand and led her upstairs. She grinned at how good Annie was with people, and she rubbed her bump thinking about how good Annie had been with her cousin. She would be a great big sister.

"How are you feeling this morning, Reese?"

"Heavily pregnant."

Stan laughed. "I guess if you get yourself in these situations…"

"Shut up!"

"Hey, now, Stan. Leave her alone. I'm sure she had lots of fun getting in this situation. Remember the guys she used to bring home?"

Of course, Jimmy joined in teasing her.

"Guys? I only ever brought Mikey home." Jimmy frowned at that. She'd not mentioned that name in front of him in a long time, especially considering the bad blood there.

"And that Robby guy that Tommy had to hide from dad!" They all laughed until she registered Tommy's name as a gut punch.

Her face went somber, making them stop too. "Have either of you heard from him?"

Stan shook his head. "Reese, after what he did at my house, I can't be involved with him. Frankly, I don't want to be involved. Karen was scared half to death, and I got my ass chewed by her dad when he caught wind of what happened. They're not like that, you know. I have to keep them safe. If he cleans up and wants to make things right, maybe."

She nodded. "I get that. Annie told me a few weeks ago how he wrecked the car with her in it. I was pissed, and I wanted to strangle him myself."

"Yeah, that's when I told him he might think of sending Annie to you. He called me up after the cops dropped him off and wanted me to make a liquor store run."

She closed her eyes. "Of course he did. Jimmy, have you heard from him?"

"Nope."

"I think he's going to be inside for a while. I offered to help him out, even hoped he might come out and live in my old house, but he basically threw it back in my face. He didn't want my help."

Jimmy shrugged. "You did what you could do then."

"Sometimes, I think I'm just done with that situation like when I held Annie while she cried just a few weeks ago because he ignores her existence. I thought 'screw him.' But the truth is that other times, I think about him and wonder why he's not here. I mean, he's kind of the missing piece here, isn't he?"

Stan's shoulders slumped. "He is."

Stan had always had somewhat of a middle child syndrome. She was happy her family was here, and she didn't mean to imply that it wasn't worth it without Tommy.

"Stan, I didn't mean…"

"I know what you meant, Teresa. I'm glad to be here to celebrate Charlotte's birth with you."

"I'm glad you're both here, too."

"But Tommy is your favorite."

Jimmy sucked in air through his teeth. "Come on, Stan. We're here to celebrate, not fight."

"I'm not fighting! It's just a simple truth. Reese and Tommy have always been thick as thieves. She just told us she didn't feel like today is complete without Tommy, and yeah. She's right. He's our brother, too. He made choices that keep him from being here or a part of our family really. It fucking sucks."

"It does suck, but like I said, I am glad that you're all here. We just have to find a way to move on."

Jimmy nodded. "Yeah, we do. Again."

That was about dad. She'd taken beatings from dad, but perhaps Jimmy had been the most heartbroken. He was very young when mom died, and he believed in the best of dad for a long time. Sometimes, she worried for him, terrified that he might think that behavior was normal. Knowing what she knew now, especially about addiction, perhaps it was Tommy who she should have been worried about.

She reached for Jimmy's arm. "We can do it."

Stan bumped into her shoulder. "I'd say we already are."

They were still waiting for Patrick to return, and she didn't mean to be a terrible host, but she was still tired. So, she went back upstairs for a bit.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

When Patrick returned, he refused to let her help at all. Of course! With her blueberry muffin, she stayed inside and entertained their guests as best as she could. She'd never been the best hostess, but it was different because this was all family.

She did as best as she could to answer their questions and keep the conversation going, but she was happy to get upstairs to get ready when time came. She was truly thankful that her walking was getting much better. Taking the stairs was no longer a chore, and frankly, she was happy to be back upstairs in her own bed.

Though, she was less pleased with her arm situation. She would have to have surgery once Charlotte was born to try to fix her rotator cuff and something else. She didn't have much range of motion. Again, as the doctor delivered that news, she wept. However, Patrick held her hand and told her that he was there. They'd make whatever modifications necessary.

While he was there to help, that also meant she still couldn't do some rather basic things like fix her own hair. She was getting stronger with that hand in therapy. She just wished she'd get back to 100%. As it stood, Madeleine would have to come help her finish getting ready.

Patrick came into their bedroom, momentarily scaring her as she tried adjusting the damn dress. However, he just stared at her.

"Does it look bad? It's a little snug in the top. Damn breasts are still getting larger." She frowned. "Well, at least since I ordered this dress."

"Oh, I definitely noticed them last night. I have no comments or complaints."

She grinned widely, flashing him her teeth. "Shut up! Seriously though, how does it look?"

He closed the distance between them before taking her cheek in his palm. "You look absolutely ethereal."

"I've never had anyone describe me that way before."

She kissed his palm. He had ways of truly making her feel like the only woman in the world, like she was so special in his eyes.

She was a bit surprised when he offered to fix her hair, but not completely surprised. He always fixated on her hair a bit, and she could tell he had a preference for her natural curls. Though she expected Madeleine would be the best bet for this, he'd been practicing. Like all things in their family, Patrick was preternaturally prepared.

After fixing up her hair, he showed her the nursery-which was absolutely gorgeous. She couldn't believe how much work he'd put into it. The little fake scoreboard with Charlotte's name on it was a nice touch. She rubbed her bump, hoping she shared her sister's love for sports too.

She kissed his cheek on the way out. "You always know exactly what I want."

In reality, she had no idea what she wanted. She never envisioned some grand nursery. However, seeing what he'd done with the space, she knew he captured it just right.

Getting downstairs, she was surprised by how many people were already here!

"Can't believe so many people are here."

"They are all here for you."

"That's not true. I don't think your mother would say that."

"Oh, I think she would." She met his grin with one of her own as she took his hand again.

Looking around, could she see Patrick had not exaggerated the gift situation. The gift table was overflowing-with some large items beneath and beside the table.

She leaned into his side. "Baby, we should have told them we don't need gifts."

"That's what I said, but my mother looked at me like I'd grown another head. She said she was getting gifts for her grandchild."

She grinned. Of course that was Patricia's stance. The apple didn't fall far from the tree there because she can't imagine a situation where she could actually talk Patrick out of gift giving!

"Teresa!" She saw Mandy Bosco waving at her as she walked toward them, her salt and pepper hair flowing behind her. She was a bit surprised she was here.

"Mandy! How are you?"

She gave her a hug from the side. For obvious reasons, Mandy was always a bit wishy washy around her. However, she seemed incredibly happy today.

"I'm doing great! So, how much longer until the little one is here?"

"About 9 weeks. Frankly, I'm ready for her now!"

"I bet. I just wanted to stop in and say hi. I saw some folks from the CBI, so I'll go say hi. I'm not sure how long I will stay, but Sam wanted me to send his love."

"Tell him I said hi and that he can always call me. I've not had anyone to commiserate with…"

"About the Cubs. Yeah, I know. It's absolutely awful how they're playing this year! No money into the club, no investment for championships. That's all he keeps talking about!"

The older woman laughed and kissed her cheek before floating away. She was very sweet.

"That's Mandy Bosco?"

"Yes, and don't start anything. It's all water under the bridge."

"I'm not starting anything."

She smiled at him. "Good."

"But I can see Sam has a type." She slapped his arm. "I'm sorry. It was just right there."

"Honey, you look gorgeous. I love your hair!" Madeleine was always so complimentary.

"Thank you. I hope everything is good at the house."

"It is! We have a chair for you over here. It's sort of the middle of the patio. I'm sure people want to say hello, but I want to make sure we get you comfortable first."

"Thanks." That was a sweet gesture, but she hated being the center of attention. Though, that was probably why they were all gathered here today.

Madeleine and Patrick helped her get seated and brought her a plate of refreshments. Meanwhile, everyone was coming by to talk to her.

Uncle Evan reached down and hugged her. "Hey, kiddo."

"Uncle Evan, I'm so glad you're here!"

"Me too. I was just talking to Stan."

"I'm glad you guys got to meet in person."

"For sure. I wanted to tell you something really quickly."

"Okay?"

"We've set a date for the wedding. It's cliche, but we're doing Valentine's Day."

"Are you sure? That's so long away!"

"Now, honey, we've waited for so many years already. A few more months is nothing! Besides, when we started looking at dates, it became apparent that winter would be better-and what winter day is better than the one dedicated to love?"

"Fair enough!"

"We want Annie and Charlotte to be the ring bearers."

"Charlotte? She'll be very small."

"I know, but Jason has been telling me about weddings where he's seen them put babies in carriers or something. We can talk about it later! I just wanted to tell you we have a firm date now."

"I'm just bummed you ever had to postpone it."

He kissed her forehead. "No worries, my sweetheart. Now, today is your day. I'm so happy for you. May I?"

His hand hovered above her belly, indicating he wanted to touch it.

"Sure."

He rubbed her belly. "I can't wait to meet you little niece. I'm sure you are already the apple of your mommy and daddy's eyes!"

"Oh, I'm sure she is! And her grandma can't wait to spoil her!" Patricia had come up behind Evan.

"Patricia, it's so good to see you. I didn't get to talk to you earlier. Uncle Evan, this is…"

"Patrick's mother! We met a little while ago. I was actually telling her what a damn good bread pudding you make!"

She grinned. "It is one of the things I make, yes."

"She's an excellent cook! Though, it probably sounds terrible that I'm putting it that way. You do so much more than cook, Reese."

"I know what you mean, and I love cooking! Once my arm is better, I'll be back in the kitchen more. I'm really glad that Patrick has been willing and able to pick up that slack."

"It's not slack!" Patrick approached with the water she'd requested. "It's called taking care of my wife. That's something I love doing."

His mother smiled at him. "I'm glad you two are doing so well. You know, I am a homemaker, so I can always be on hand to help with the girls. Just let me know when!"

That made her smile. She imagined that if her own mother were alive, she might do something like that. Maybe she'd even be here through the birthing process. On instinct, she reached for her cross, but she realized she'd given that to Annie a few weeks ago. In fact, she was running around the yard with it around her neck right now. Instead, she rubbed her bump.

Patrick leaned down and whispered into her ear. "Are you okay, baby?"

"I'm fine. I'm just thinking about someone."

He gave her that knowing nod. "I'm sure she'd be proud of you."

"For having a baby? She'd probably want to know why I haven't done this before now!"

They shared a small laugh as he squeezed her hand. "I think she'd be proud of you for a lot more than that, but if she could see what a wonderful mother you are, she'd like that. I mean, I didn't know her, but I'm assuming that's where you get your amazing skills from. I love you."

She brought his hand to rest on his bump as Evan and Patricia were lost in conversation. "I love you too."

After a while, Annie was starting to get restless. Karen had already taken Stan Junior in to be put down for his nap.

Annie gripped the arm of the chair and leaned over the chair. "Mommy, when will we have cake?"

"After the gifts."

"Can I help with the gifts?"

"I don't see why not, but ask Miss Hightower."

Interestingly enough, gifts happened not too long after that-with Annie helping to open the presents. Though, she could tell she was getting frustrated as she asked what each of the gifts were when she opened them.

"Mommy, why are all the gifts so boring?" That earned some laughs from the audience watching them open gifts.

"Because they're things to help us get ready for Charlotte. She needs all the new stuff!"

She realized that they'd not bought a gift for Annie. Were they supposed to do that? Truthfully, she hadn't expected so many gifts here today. Maybe they could take her to get a new toy tomorrow.

Almost like clockwork, Patricia was beside her, wrapping her arm around Annie's shoulders. "Why don't you come sit with grandma for a bit? I have some presents for you, but we need to let your mom open these ones first."

"Then, we can have cake?"

Patricia nodded, and just like that, Annie was off to sit down with her.

After they got through all of the gifts, Amanda and Maisie served cake to everyone. She'd not really gotten the chance to speak with them today, but Amanda seemed in good spirits. Though...she noticed she'd sent Jimmy a few lingering smiles. She just shrugged it off as she tried to immerse herself in her surroundings. At times, it was hard to believe this many people cared about their family-or that all of these people were their family.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

When Patrick mentioned a trip to Lenny's, she wanted to go. Frankly, she was ready to get out of the house, but her situation made playing pool less than ideal. And someone needed to watch the kids.

But once again, Patricia swooped in, just like she had when she gifted Annie with a new paint set and a professional soccer jersey today. She agreed to stay with the kids while they went out.

She had forgotten what it was like to be out with her brothers-and she probably should have warned Patrick. She knew he was trying not to drink so that he could drive them home, but she could do it. So could Karen, who also wasn't drinking as she was still nursing Stan Junior. But everyone was having so much fun.

In Patrick's case, she had to practically carry him out. "Teresa, I love you."

"I love you too."

"You're the love of my life."

"You're the love of my life, too."

"Can we have sex when we get home? I know you're pregnant, but I want to flip you on your…"

"Patrick, our siblings are right here!"

Her face turned red as her brothers stared at her and Amanda turned her nose up. For her part, Maisie just shrugged with a bemused look on her face.

He laughed. "Surely, they know we…" his voice shifted to a whisper "do sex. You know, it's how we got this little situation right here. I think they do it, too. But like not with each other, right Jimmy and Amanda? No sex with each other!"

Amanda's face turned red now as Maisie laughed. "That's a call out, Amanda!"

She placed her index finger over his lips. "Okay that's enough."

He just moved his head back and kept talking. "They were looking at each other all night. I'm pretty sure I saw him cop a feel. And you know, I'm not a violent man, and I don't think she needs me to defend her honor, but I will…"

He kept talking, but it turned to gibberish. Yes, Jimmy and Amanda had been...close. She was pretty sure she faked not knowing how to play pool so Jimmy would teach her. He was all too eager to stand very closely behind her and show her exactly how to use a pool cue. She was also eager to laugh at his jokes. At one point, she was certain they were holding hands at the bar.

She got Patrick and the others into the car with Karen's help. When they arrived at home, Patricia helped make sure everyone was inside.

"Teresa?"

"Hmm?"

"Will you take me drunk? I'm a little home."

She laughed as he thought about how the words came out. Was that what he was supposed to say?

She just squeezed his hand. "Of course. Baby, we're already home."

"When did that happen?"

"I drove us all home. Let's get you upstairs, okay?"

Thankfully, Patricia came and took over. She would get his ass up the stairs one way or another, but this was probably for the best.

After getting him settled, she joined Patricia for a cup of tea downstairs.

"Did you all have a fun night?"

"Yes, we did. We've not been there in so long. Since we've had Annie, we tend to go to family-friendly places."

"Honey, it's important that you still get a date night in here and there! You need something for just the two of you."

"Well, Patrick did take me to Hawaii for our anniversary. That was right before I was...injured."

"I see."

"We've just been so busy that we've not had time for a lot of date nights, but we try to take our time together when we can. I have no complaints."

"That's good."

"How did the kids do?"

"Well, I made spaghetti for dinner. Annie asked for seconds and Stan played in his as he ate it. Then, Annie helped me make cookies to eat for a snack for our bedtime movie. She loves Beauty and the Beast."

"Yes, she does."

"Have you guys thought about taking her to Disneyland yet?"

"Oh no! That sounds like the seventh circle of hell."

Patricia laughed. "It does, and it is. However, the kids enjoy it. Maybe we could plan a family trip for the spring."

A family trip. She'd not thought of anything like that, but it made sense. Patricia would want to spend time with all of her family. She smiled.

"What is it, honey?"

"I'm glad you're here."

Patricia reached for her hand. "I'm glad to be here. Every day, I am so thankful that you encouraged Paddy to reach out. I'm glad that we cleared things up and that I have this second chance."

"Well, I'm sure he loved you telling him a story as he fell asleep tonight."

Patricia laughed. "Please, he was asleep about 20 seconds after he laid down!"

She yawned. "I should get to bed, so I can get up and make breakfast."

Her mother in law waved her hand. "Don't worry about it! I already prepped breakfast. I'll be up. Besides, most everyone will be sleeping in besides Annie. Oh! I put her with me. Amanda and Maisie took her room. That way when Annie wakes, I can just get up with her. I already told her she could help me make breakfast."

She nodded. "That all sounds good. Thank you."

She made her way up the stairs. Like her husband, it didn't take her long to fall asleep.

The next morning, she woke around her usual time, but the house was still rather quiet. She decided she would go ahead and go downstairs.

When she exited her bedroom, to her shock, she watched as a messy-haired Amanda crept out of Jimmy's bedroom. Amanda's wide eyes met her own.

"I was just looking for the bathroom."

"You're not a very good liar."

"I'm not. So, can we just keep this between us?"

She just nodded as she walked past her. She'd be asking Jimmy what the hell his problem was later, but outside of them, she would not be mentioning what she just saw. Her brother with Patrick's younger sister was not a good idea in the slightest. Though, it was probably just something they were getting out of their systems last night in a strange town. Surely, nothing would come of that.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Three weeks later...

At about 3am, she woke up with an excruciating pain in her abdomen and a sudden urge to urinate. So sudden, she didn't even quite make it to the bathroom. She did her best and got that cleaned up before Patrick woke. He would clean everything for her, but that was somewhat embarrassing. After she relieved her bladder, the pain went away. Charlotte was probably just laying in a weird position.

She laid back down, and Patrick draped his arm over her, but she was up again with pain by 5:30. Her morning continued much the same. She was rather thirsty, but she had no appetite. She'd read about these false labor pains online, and she would just wait them out.

Around midday, the pains got much worse and much more frequent. That was when Patrick caught on. As sweet as he was, he could become extremely worried over nothing. He wanted to call the doctor, but she was fine...until a few hours later. She thought her pelvis was cracking open!

So, it shouldn't have come as much shock when she finally agreed to call the doctor and they got to the hospital where Dr. Robbins told her she was in labor. After all, that's exactly what she imagined would happen during labor.

Still, she was freaked out when she heard Dr. Robbins say: "Teresa, you're having a baby."

"Well, yeah. In six weeks."

"No, you're having a baby today. And if I had to guess, in the next few hours or so."

If she weren't on a table, she would have fallen over. Today? Today was six weeks too soon! Patrick grabbed her hand, and from his grip, she could tell he was having similar thoughts.

"What?!" No! It's not time! She's early! IT'S TOO EARLY!"

Her head was swimming. It was too early. Dr. Robbins did her best to assuage her fears before leaving the room. Had she done something wrong to make Charlotte arrive so early? Was it because of her attack?

"Patrick…" She started to cry. She hated crying, but she was terrified. Her carelessness had led to a dangerous situation for their little girl.

He did his best to show his support, but she knew he wasn't entirely calm either. She had to remind him of who to contact. When he left the room to make the calls and get changed, she cried again.

The nurse came back. "Honey, is everything okay?"

"She's early."

"Just six weeks. That's not so bad."

"Do you know what the survival rate is like at this stage?"

The woman flashed her a knowing, supportive smile as another pain crept up her back. "I don't have statistics for you, but I know it's high. You are in the right place, and we are going to take good care of you. Now, the anesthesiologist will be up here in just a bit to get you set up with an epidural. You do want one of those, don't you?"

Hell, she hadn't had time to really think about that! Or even really discuss it with Patrick!

"I'm...I'm not sure."

"Well, you need to decide soon. You waited so long to come see us that you're nearly out of the window where it can be administered."

"I need to talk to my husband."

"I will get him, but honey, this is one of those things that I think you should decide and feel confident in your decision about. After all, you're the one in pain."

The next labor pain was the deciding factor for her. The nurse had the anesthesiologist come in. She listened as the woman explained the procedure along with the benefits and the risks. Frankly, she didn't care. She just couldn't take many more waves of pain that made it feel like her body was being split open.

Patrick returned as they were finishing up with her.

"Are you okay, baby?"

"They just did the epidural."

"That's good."

"I'm sorry I didn't discuss it with you."

"Discuss it with me? I'm sure you made the right choice." He leaned over and put his hand on her forehead, brushing her hair out of her face. "You always do."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

A few hours later, Charlotte made her debut into the world. She noticed that Patrick looked on with such wonderment and pride as he started to tear up as they laid her onto her chest.

"She's beautiful, Teresa." She certainly was beautiful.

"Is she alright?"

"I think so."

She looked like a normal size baby. Surely, they'd tell her all of that in a little while. She never understood why people boasted about how big their babies were when they were born, but she thinks she might get it now. Charlotte tried to flutter her little eyes open, but that only lasted briefly.

She whispered to her as she lightly dragged her finger across her little body. "It's me, your mama. Get some rest, baby girl. You have a whole lifetime to see the whole world. I can't wait to show it to you."

The nurse came and took Charlotte. They needed to finish up with both of them.

She felt her head hit the back of the bed in exhaustion. "I'm tired."

"I bet you are."

"Hmm. Stay with her."

"I'll stay with both of you. Forever."

"Of course you will. I love you."

"I love you, too."

He kissed her sweaty forehead. "Get some rest, my green-eyed girl."

"Okay, my blue-eyed boy." She wasn't sure if she said that part out loud as she succumbed to sleep.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

When she woke, Patrick was knocking on her door. Patricia was with him. Odd that she was here.

When he handed her a bouquet of flowers, she almost wanted to cry. She still couldn't believe she'd given birth a little while ago. Charlotte was here, and according to the nurses, she was a healthy full term baby as far as they could tell. Perhaps her due date was all wrong...or Charlotte knew the world was ready for her. In any case, she was glad she was here now.

He leaned in and planted a kiss on her lips.

"Where is Charlotte?"

"She's in the nursery."

"Is she okay?"

"Yeah, everything is fine."

"Well, I think it might be time for her to eat. There's a lot of pressure in my breasts. Will you get the nurse for me?"

He kissed her again. "Sure."

"You know, Teresa, I'm not sure if you had time to do your breastfeeding education yet, so let me know what you need help with! I'm here for you, sweetheart."

"I didn't get a chance to do that, but there's a lactation specialist that I'm supposed to see. I plan to breastfeed at least until I'm back at work."

She nodded. "Whatever works best for you! I just want you to know I'm here. I've done this a few times. I don't want to get in the way, but I told Paul I'd plan to stay for a few weeks to help you get settled in with Charlotte. Having a newborn can be rough."

She flashed her mother-in-law a small smile. "I think that's great, Patricia. I certainly didn't expect you to stay with us."

"Well, I know your own mother isn't here, but that's what a grandmother does. Paul's mother came out and spent time with us when Amanda was born. It was nice. Though, at least I'd already known what to do at that time. I was all alone when I had Paddy. It was very nice of her to come out. She passed before Maisie was born."

"I appreciate it, really."

Patricia squeezed her hand. She was truly a nice woman with a good heart. She could see so much of her husband in his mother.

In such a short time, their family had grown in ways that they wanted and in ways that they couldn't foresee. Most of that was because of Patrick. He was the man who shared her special love language, and she couldn't be happier about that. He was such a loving husband and father. She was glad he was the man she got to spend the rest of her life with. It took no time or effort at all to see that they'd have a full life together.

As the nurse wheeled Charlotte's bassinet into her room, she smiled at her little girl as she kicked her feet into the air. She was the promise that their love held.

Patrick sat next to her as she positioned Charlotte just right. Surprisingly, she latched on fairly quickly. As she sat there feeding her for the first time, Patrick wrapped his arm around her. He gave Charlotte his finger.

He chuckled softly. "She's already a strong one."

"Of course, she is. She's ours."

She met his smile with one of her one. My blue-eyed boy. The father of my children. My lover. And that's how it would always be.

A/N 2: That is all...for now! Join us for a brief Christmas special coming in a few weeks ahead of the final part of this story, Somebody Like You, coming this winter/spring.
