Innocent Heart
Chapter Three - A Brand New Life
Bella Swan P.O.V
Within ten minutes Portia and the rest of her team had found me and pulled me up from the casket, I was chilled to the bone in fear and Portia demanded the jackets of each of the men to help with my shaking. When we returned to the car the heating had been put on full but Portia gave the order we were not to leave until I was ready. As it turns out Portia already had items at the ready should I require them, the trunk of the car I travelled in was equipped with a full make up and skin care range, a change of clothes both casual and formal, chilled waters in a powered mini fridge along with healthy snacks and beneath the trunk, instead of a spare tire there were stacks of cash, probably amounting to over a hundred thousand dollars to my own personal use should I ever require it.
The others returned to their cars while I made use of the facial wipes I had found in one of the personally engraved cream leather storage cases. The wipes were very hydrating and gentle on my skin but I was merely using them to shift the dust that had gotten onto my skin and through my hair when Edward had pushed me down into that god forsaking casket. I was right to be afraid of him, every instinct in my body had told me to run away from him and looked what happened to me as a result of not listening to my own body. Edward had made it clear who held the cards in this somewhat relationship of ours, he was in the driver's seat and I was lucky to even be in the car.
Charlie hadn't sugar coated a single bit of his encounters with this family, they may have money, power and connections but there wasn't a single thing about them that screamed family. How could they raise such a boy as Edward? What values had he learned from them? What had he done or saw to make him into the monster he was at the tender age of seventeen? He had pushed me down into an open grave and left me there, I had screamed for him and yet he had just left me there. That sickening, arrogance of his was legendary, I'd never met anyone like him in my life. In one year he would be my husband, he didn't like me, he didn't want me for a wife and right now I wasn't sure I had it in me to become the next Mrs Cullen.
Despite the late hour we made our way across town towards Charlie's house and I got my first look at the town of Forks. Nothing much had changed, but you could clearly tell the stores that were in debt to the Cullen family. All the remodelled stores were beautiful but I knew the piling debt behind them which made them less pleasant to look at. The street I had grown up on hadn't changed a bit, maybe a lick of paint here and there to a few houses but mostly everything had remained the same, especially Charlie's house. He did nothing to it but cut the lawn every summer to keep the neighbours in check.
I attempted to get out of the car when the driver had reached for the door instead, rather insistent upon being the one to open it for me. Portia was quick to arrive at my side, I attempted to cut across the lawn to get to the door when I stopped cold. I stood with Portia and watched one of the many men accompanying us head up the path towards the house, knocking on the door hard and awaiting a response.
"I could have just done that myself"
"It's standard protocol, Miss Swan. You shouldn't even be out of the vehicle until we are given the all clear from the head of your detail"
I held back the urge to look at her and give her the 'Seriously?' stare.
"There's no threat to me"
"Sadly that isn't the case at all, Miss Swan. There have been many close encounters within these many months"
"You mean since you guys came to town?"
"Yes"
"Like what?"
"There are other families who did not wish the Cullen's to move so close to them. It's a question of territory. Beyond my rank as you could imagine"
So there was trouble within the family, they'd moved into territory that was not theirs to take. What family could hate them so much? I was rather curious, after all the enemy of my enemy was my friend. Perhaps I had just come across my first card to play against the infamous Edward Cullen.
Charlie wasn't home after all although we had arranged to meet. I didn't have a key to the house but that didn't stop the men from finding their way in. One of them had picked the lock of the backdoor that led onto the kitchen, despite their efforts to follow me inside, I won in the end and made my way into the house alone for the first time in over ten years.
It didn't smell to my relief although I was rather surprised given the mess Charlie had let gather up around each room including my own. There were old newspapers everywhere, articles on the walls of his room about the Cullen family's efforts to bring Forks into the twenty first century. There was a lot of empty crushed cans of beer, they were even a few in the bathroom, there was laundry piled up everywhere, you couldn't even see the sofa over the take out boxes and empty bags of chips. I was glad to be alone in the house then, I didn't care what the others thought of me outside but I did care about Charlie, I didn't want people to know he had been living this way. I was here now and I was going to look after him the best I could and I was starting right now.
I wasted little time tracking down some heavy duty bin bags, I started from the top of the house and worked my way down, I de-cluttered every room to start off with, then after it was all shifted out of the way I made a start on the laundry. Picking up months if not years of clothes from the floor of his bedroom, stripping off the bed linen in his and my room and picking up the towels from the bathroom floor. Every single item went on for a boil wash with double the amount of necessary fabric softener. I went upstairs again and replaced the bed linen, plumped his pillows, removed all the articles about the Cullens and hid them away in the top drawer of his dresser, I opened the bedroom windows to let the place air out before I dusted every surface in sight.
The bathroom was next, the toilet was bleached, I scrubbed the thick layering of shaving foam and trimmed hair from the lining of the sink. I binned all the empty cans of body spray and shaving cream, along with all the rusted razors and toilet roll holders. I spent maybe an hour scrubbing the bath and shower, there was mould, I wasn't going to pretend there wasn't when there was, seeing it had brought tears to my eyes. Charlie had been living like this a very long time, it wasn't right that he was left to suffer while my mom and I had just continued on with our lives.
My room was being used for storing boxes that should have been in the attic, I had to manoeuvre myself between all of them just to get over to the window to let some air into the room. I was going to leave them as there were but I just couldn't do it in the end, so I took one box at a time up into the attic, storing them in one corner so if Charlie asked I'd know exactly where they all were. When I finished up with them I saw my room again for the first time, I could see the floor finally and even with the boxes gone it looked smaller than I remembered. Again I put fresh linen on the bed, if whatever reason I needed an escape from life with the Cullens I needed to know I had a bed here should I need it. Again I dusted each counter surface until the layers of dust were all finally gone for good.
The sitting room didn't take nearly as long as I had anticipated, although I did have to re-arrange some of the furniture to make the room semi liveable again. I went outside under the kitchen window and collected some freshly chopped wood for the fire, I lit it without burning myself which was a delight in itself. I dusted everywhere, the entire room smelt of polish in the end. Finally the kitchen, you wouldn't believe it but I washed every single mug, dish, glass, bowl, utensil, pot, pan and oven tray in that kitchen. I didn't know what was clean and what wasn't and so I had to be sure. While everything dried I went into each cabinet and cleaned every single corner and base, I couldn't return clean dishes into dirty cabinets.
After that was done I cleaned out the fridge. All I can say about that was the milk was blue.
The milk was blue.
Thankfully Charlie did have a few items that hadn't spoiled and there was plenty of ingredients for me to play around with and come up with something. Despite there being more cleaning to get done I had went to work on making Charlie a tray of lasagne, mom always said it was one of his favourite meals after a hard day at the station. So while it cooked in the oven I had collected the vacuum and gone to work around the rooms, lifting up whatever I could from the floor and moving anything in my way. I emptied the container of the vacuum twice and I hadn't even made it downstairs. After I finished up I returned it to its proper place upstairs and not the top step of the stairs where Charlie had left it.
I had collected a bucket of steaming hot soapy water and a few rags and on my hands and knees I had proceeded to scrub the floors. It was fair to say I was a sweaty mess by the end.
After that was done so was the oven timer, I took out the tray of lasagne and left it to cool on the kitchen counter.
I finished up my work by cleaning every window in the house, they were bad, they were actually really really bad. I could see some of the men standing 'guard' outside Charlie's house, some looked my way while others gave me some dignity and kept themselves to themselves.
Charlie wouldn't be happy to come home and see I had done all of this but I wasn't happy that I had come all this way to help him and he hadn't even bothered to show up to welcome me home.
In the end I had collected a pad and paper from my old room and written him a note which I left by the tray of now covered lasagne.
Charlie,
Don't be mad that I cleaned the house, just tuck into this lasagne as it's my own recipe and it will make me feel better knowing you've come home to a warm meal. I've met with Edward already but we can talk about that when you are ready. I'll be living with the Cullens but I hope I can spend a few nights at home and we can have some proper time together to catch up and discuss matters.
Don't be upset that things have turned out the way they have. We all make mistakes and thankfully this is one we can solve together. We're all we have so let's just get through this together.
I'll be in touch.
I love you.
Bella
As soon as I stepped outside I was escorted back into the car and found a warm Starbucks coffee with extra cream waiting for me. I didn't hesitate in taking it, if they wanted to poison me they could have done it back on the plane.
I was driven across town again, only this time past all the nicer looking houses before there was nothing around me but trees. The Cullens lived outside of town in the middle of nowhere, Charlie had been right about the security in place there. Even from the moment we pulled in at the front gate I got my first insight to the security and man power behind the Cullen's residence. There were four men at the front gate, two of which walked the line of every single car checking for bombs, freaking bombs. I just couldn't believe it, I thought the thing that would shock me was the one mile length driveway to their house but this was just beyond words.
When we pulled up at the front of the house the driver moved faster this time and got to my door before I could open it myself.
"Nicely done" I muttered to him.
He just stared blankly ahead and gave a little shrug in response. Why didn't people just look me in the eye?
With that I took my first look at the Cullen's house.
You picture something in your mind over and over again and you think when you see it, nothing will compare to what you had pictured and yet I was at a loss for words.
Portia was as always very quick to my side and ready to aid me, she meant well but there was no chance I was going to adjust to this way of life anytime soon. I took a quick scan at the manicured lawns surrounding us, the fountains currently being cleaned up by the gardeners as the white hydrangeas surrounding the grounds enjoying some water from the sprinklers.
The front door had two guards at either side, both sporting some very nice looking shades. The front door opened and a tall blonde rather pale looking man stepped out, a warm smile on his lips as he looked across at me, he looked behind him and held out his hand for the woman following behind him.
Portia introduced me to Dr Carlisle Cullen and his wife Esme, my future in laws. Carlisle was in a navy blue suit with a grey shirt and tie. His wedding ring looked freshly cleaned and his watch looked brand new. His wife Esme's jewellery was not silver like his but gold instead, she was sporting a twenty carat yellow diamond wedding ring, her necklace was similar in style and looked equally as expensive. She was wearing a stunning dark purple satin dress that hugged her very slender figure.
I followed them inside, the moment we stepped inside Portia was quick to remove my jacket from me and another woman appeared at my other side and began fixing my hair out of the hair tie I had put on while cleaning up at Charlie's house and she set it around my shoulders. Portia retrieved a bottle of perfume from her bag and sprayed it on me before handing me a small tub of mints and finally disappearing from my side for the first time that night.
Every room I followed Dr and Mrs Cullen through featured art on every single wall, there was ornaments and sculptures in glass displays not to be touched, there were guards in every other room each room smelt amazing, practically mouth watering. It was a mix of new leather, library books, fresh cotton and vanilla candles.
We entered a very large dining room, the black dining table stretching the length of the room with a rather large throne looking seat at the top of the table. How very mafia like, the head of the family at the head of the table. The second I looked at the range of forks, knives and spoons at each seat I knew this was not going to be easy.
On the other side of the room by the roaring white marble fireplace stood four new faces. Dr Cullen made the necessary introductions and I met those who in a year's time would be my brother and sister in laws.
First I met the very tall and muscular Emmett Cullen, he was wearing a dark grey shirt under a black waist coat and black bottoms. He had rough hands and given the shoulders on him it went without saying that he was the muscle in the family.
Next was Rosalie, who was not only my future sister in law but she was also Emmett's girlfriend. She was stunning, simply flawless with the most beautiful blonde hair that I'd ever seen in my life. She wasn't as friendly as Emmett, she didn't shake my hand when I offered it but I didn't expect them all to open me with open arms considering the circumstances.
I met Jasper next along with his petite girlfriend and once again my future sister in law, Alice. She reminded me of a fairy, she was stunning, her skin as pale as mine, but my hair was just a touch darker. Unlike her sister Alice was indeed very friendly and the only one of them to welcome me with open arms, I wasn't a hugger but she certainly was.
We sat down to dinner and the polite dinner conversation began, Dr and Mrs Cullen asked me questions about my life back home, about my mom and Phil and what subjects I enjoyed at school. The appetizers were served by waiters in tuxes and white gloves. It was a mouth watering bruschetta that I chowed down in less than five bites. When I looked around at the surrounding plates they were pretty untouched, some of them were just pushing the food around their plates while they chatted among themselves.
The double doors behind me opened and everyone went silent, I looked over my shoulder to find Edward Cullen standing in the doorway. I could hear every step he took, you could hear a pin drop as he made his way into the room. He was smirking at his father, rather arrogant over the fact that he was arriving late to dinner and was showing little respect to his parents.
One of the staff pulled back the empty chair out beside me and Edward waved them off and out of his way. It was in that moment he cast his eyes down at me taking in what condition hours worth of cleaning up at Charlie's had left my clothes in. I lowered my head ever so as Edward leaned down towards me and placed a soft kiss upon my temple before taking his seat.
"I must have missed the dress code requirements for dinner" Edward said
"Edward, Bella has been telling us about the subjects she enjoys at school. You have very similar interests" Esme explained
"But not the same dedication to our GPAs given my four point five compared to Miss Swan's three point nine"
"How did you know that?" I asked him without thought.
Edward smirked at my question and instead of answering me he helped himself to his glass of red wine and refused to look me in the eye.
Within five minutes our plates were cleared and replaced with a half roast chicken on each plate, with roasted potatoes, green beans and caramelised carrots. Yet again I appeared to be the only one actually eating any of this delicious food. No one even touched their desserts, how could anyone say no to a slice of warm chocolate cake?
Occasionally I'd glance over at Edward but he was always too engaged in conversations with his brothers to even notice me. He had changed for dinner, everyone in the room had made the effort, suddenly I felt like I was wearing Target in a room full of Gucci and Dior, which when I thought about it was probably the case.
"If you don't mind I think I'll turn in" I announced looking down to Dr and Mrs Cullen.
"Of course, Bella. You've had a long day" Esme said with a warm smile.
Beside me Edward got up to his feet and buttoned his suit keeping his eyes on me the entire time. He made his way around the back of my chair and I quickly placed my napkin down and pushed my chair back with Edward's assistance.
"I'll escort Bella to her room and then I'll be going out for the rest of the evening" He told his father before bringing his hand around my lower back, pushing his finger tips into my hip where it remained as he guided me out of the room.
We walked in silence as I attempted not to look too intimidated by all of the beautiful art surrounding us. I wanted to remove Edward's hand from my waist, especially given the firmness of his touch. Finally he slowed our pace and we rounded one last corner together. Out of nowhere Edward spun me around and pushed my back against the wall, his forehead meeting mine as I attempted to control my breathing over how off guard he had caught me.
I closed my eyes, refusing to be here, refusing to witness his efforts of trying to break my spirit and make me flee.
Edward leaned in to my ear and I felt his cold breath against my lobe making me shiver.
"Perhaps I'll come to your room tonight" He whispered.
I brought my hands up to his chest and attempted to push him away but was met by the solid wall that he was, I couldn't push him away if my life depended on it. He gripped both my wrists and pinned them above my head, his lips almost meeting mine as he restrained me.
"Why am I here?" I asked keeping my eyes closed not knowing how to look at him "You don't want me here"
"Maybe I do"
I opened my eyes and watched Edward lean away from me slightly to meet my eyes, keeping my hands bound tightly above my head, keeping me in place, right where he wanted me.
"Maybe I thought a girl whose father would sell her to clear off his debt could use my help"
"I don't want your help. I know what you're capable of"
"Not yet" He leaned in and placed a single kiss upon my cheek making me blush.
Edward freed my hands then and they immediately sank down to my sides before he walked away from me.
"But you will soon"
There was a door to my right with a key on a white ribbon around the handle, along with a 'B' sterling silver key ring. I used the key to unlock the door and I entered the room.
It was beautiful, oak wooden floors with white fur rugs on either side of the large king sized four poster bed, the bed linen was white, probably with the highest thread count you could imagine exists. There was a corner desk with an apple laptop at the ready, a white wooden book shelf that lined an entire wall, there was a mix of classic novels, ornaments, records and CDs.
The room also had two adjoining doors one that led to an en-suite bathroom which to my surprise had a centre bath with a Jacuzzi function built in, a walk in corner shower and Mr and Mrs sinks.
The other room turned out to be my closet, my fully stocked closet, there was just one little problem, although the dresses, tops and trousers were all to my measurements, none of them were the clothes I had brought from home. Each of them still held their price tags and when I say scary prices, I mean scary prices.
I was comfortable in jeans and converses, I'd never even worn heels, I lost my balance in flats, I didn't want to give myself even more of a challenge than left, right, left, right.
In the top drawer of my desk was a brand new iphone with my new number attached, along with the details of my new phone contract which was basically, unlimited everything. I wasted very little time making my first call. I got up from my chair and paced the long room while the phone continued to ring.
"Hello?" My mom finally answered.
"It's me"
"Bella? Are you calling from Charlie's cell? I didn't recognise the number"
"No actually, Charlie bought me a new phone, sort of a welcome home gift" I lied
"Well that was nice of him"
"Yeah he's really made the effort, he got my room ready for me arriving"
"I'm glad to hear it"
I needed some fresh air hearing the tone in my mom's voice regarding Charlie. At times she didn't attempt to hide her thoughts on Charlie and his life and it made me sick to my stomach, she forgot I was the one stuck in the middle of it all trying to keep the peace between them. It shouldn't have been my job, I shouldn't have to parent my parent and yet here we were.
I headed over to the French doors across from my new bed that led me out onto a balcony, equipped with its own white patio chairs and table. I gripped the black iron framing of the balcony and looked down to the large ground pool with a fountain in the centre of it. The garden below with its manicured lawns and chrome lanterns with burning white candles within each of them.
I looked across to the other side of the house catching the eye of Edward who stood alone on his own balcony watching me. He had taken off his suit jacket, rolled up the sleeves of his shirt and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. I swallowed hard seeing a pistol on his gun belt along with what appeared to be another gun clasped in his hand. It was hard to tell given the distance between us.
Edward was smirking at me, delighting in my fear of him and the guns.
"So do you think you can handle life in Forks after all?" My mom asked
I looked Edward dead in the eye then.
"I'm tougher than I look"
Over the days leading up to my first day at Fork's High School I hadn't seen Edward at all and mostly kept to my room the best I could. I hadn't heard from Charlie either and hoped to see him soon and see how he was managing. This was a very difficult situation for all of us and avoiding each other was just going to make matters worse.
Portia had attempted to introduce me to my staff many times over the past few days but as I explained to her, I couldn't deal with having a staff taking care of me, that just wasn't the type of person I was. Apparently there were many adjustments to be made in order for me to look like the future Mrs Edward Cullen but that just wasn't going to happen. After the stunt Edward had pulled with the casket, I didn't care what he wanted from this, I only cared about making it out alive.
Before I knew it was the morning of my first day of school, I had gotten up early and laid out all of my clothes. One of the kitchen staff had arrived early at my door with a tray of breakfast for me which consisted of an omelette, coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, a bowl of berries, a Greek yogurt with honey, some toast and a selection of jams. How it all managed to fit on one tray was the real trick.
I had selected a pair of dark blue jeans that hugged my hips and well they made my butt...well they made it look bigger somehow. Seriously I spent over ten minutes looking at myself in the mirror over them.
I picked out a black cotton t-shirt with a white faux fur sleeveless jacket to put on over the top of it.
Despite my pleading, Portia refused to asked my designer to go out and buy me flats of any kind. So instead I was sporting a pair of four inch black leather ankle boots.
Since a back pack was apparently unacceptable for me to have I had sought Portia's assistance with selecting one of my many and I mean many new handbags for my first day at school. She had reviewed my choice of clothing before she selected a bag to go with it.
To me it was a simple blue bag but as Portia explained it was indeed a Birkin blue indigo with ostrich gold (A/N which can be found on bagsofluxury)
I didn't curl or straighten my hair, I didn't even open the drawers of make up at my disposal that morning. No I wasn't about to change everything about myself just because I was the fiancée of Edward Cullen.
I was met at the front door by Esme who wanted to wish me luck on my first day, apparently I was the last to leave, she and Dr Cullen had told Edward to take me to school for my first day but unfortunately he didn't come home last night, which apparently wasn't out of the norm either. It was just another thing for me to expect of him in the future. Esme arranged a driver for me despite my protests that I could easily catch a bus heading into town.
I was driven to school in one of the black suvs, I was accompanied by one driver and two guards, all of whom kept radio silent from the front door to the entry gates of Forks High School. When the driver pulled up outside the school office I had taken a look out at the school, it was clearly needing some maintenance, clearly the school hadn't fallen under Dr Cullen's debt collecting scheme.
I turned back to look at the men in the car with me and I smiled.
"Anyone gonna wish me luck?" I asked
Silence.
"No?" I then shrugged and opened the door "Well, it's been great guys"
I hopped out of the car and despite wanting to slam the door behind me I stayed level. I headed into the office and got my schedule and map of the school. I was too busy stuffing both of them into my bag as I exited the office that I quickly found myself struck by something so hard it sent me to the floor.
"Oh my god I am so so sorry"
I looked up to find some guy on a skate board had been the cause of it. I laughed it off as it wasn't the craziest thing to happen to me over the past few days, it actually made me feel rather like myself again, always finding my way down on the floor because I refused to pay the proper attention.
I took his hand as he offered it and got up to my feet with only a few people having witnessed the event for themselves.
"Are you okay?"
I tried to control my laughter, the poor guy was as white as a sheet in fear.
"I'm fine don't worry about it"
Okay my arm that I landed on was a little, well it hurt a bit actually now the shock was starting to ware thin but still accidents happen.
"I didn't even see you"
"Not many people do so forget about it"
"Erm, you're new right? Seems like if you walk down the hall and see a face of someone who isn't your neighbour or your friends neighbour then they must be new to town"
"You're really selling me on Forks here"
With that he finally smiled and relaxed his stiff frame, clasping onto his board like a life raft.
"I'm Bella Swan" I introduced myself and shook his hand.
"Simon Martin"
"Keep an eye on the horizon, Simon" I said and waved goodbye to him.
Turns out everyone else I met in my morning classes were just as nice as Simon had been in welcoming me to town. I met a guy named Mike, his friend Tyler and Eric, then in my next class I met two others Jessica and Angela.
At lunch I had somewhere to sit, Jessica had spent almost twenty minutes telling me the background of everyone in the surrounding tables. But Angela put an end to that when she returned to the table with her lunch and some disturbing news.
Edward was at the office and by the sounds of it was about to be suspended if not expelled from school. During morning break apparently he had jumped Simon who was now in hospital. Charlie had called Edward by name, apparently they weren't any other witnesses to the attack although they were asking students if they had seen or heard anything at all.
"How could this happen? I mean Simon is like the sweetest guy" Angela said
"There's always been something off with Cullen, his entire family is weird"
"Weird huh?" I asked
"They're together, like together, together"
"Jessica again with this, they're not related"
"Yeah but it's weird and-"
"Bella Swan?"
I turned around to find the woman who had helped me this morning at the office standing behind me then.
"Yes?"
"Come with me"
I turned back to the girls who appeared just as confused as I was. What had I done? I picked up my bag and felt their eyes on my back as I left the cafeteria.
I followed the office worker all the way down the hall and back to the office, behind the front desk and all the way to the back to the principal's office. She opened the door and I stepped inside to find my new principal sitting behind his desk, he was a very lean man with a pointed chin and a resisting hairline. Sitting in front of the desk in one of the two seats to my horror was Edward. Seeing me there he smirked at my expression, he enjoyed my fear, he took delight in my misery.
"Bella please take a seat"
The office worker quickly left us, the sound of the door shutting behind us made me almost jump out my skin.
"Bella do you know why you're here?"
"Uh, n-no"
"There has been a serious incident this morning which has put a fellow student in hospital. Now I'm very close to calling the police as we do have the name of the alleged attacker of this young man. But apparently there has been a development"
"I don't understand"
"Simon Martin has told us that Mr Cullen here was the one who attacked him. He is the one apparently responsible for Simon's broken nose, for two of his broken teeth, for the stitches he requires on both his forehead and lip"
I needed a bathroom I could feel the vomit climbing up my throat and the blood draining from my face.
"But apparently this isn't the case at all"
The principal looked to Edward then and then back at me.
"Edward says during morning break he wasn't with Simon, but in fact he was with you"
I couldn't believe it, I just couldn't believe it. Here it was my first loyalty test in the form of blood and misery.
I was completely alone during morning break, I had snuck into one of the bathroom stalls at the back of the building in an effort to take notes from my morning classes as Tyler and Mike hadn't stopped talking to me long enough to write down a single note.
Unknown to the principal Edward reached over and grasped my thigh making my legs push together in response to his delight. He knew I was a virgin and he was delighting in that knowledge.
Was this my life now? Covering for Edward Cullen?
Edward's hand slowly grazed higher up my thigh and I shifted uneasily on my seat as the principal awaited my response. Why was Edward doing this to me?
If I didn't do what he wanted than what would he do to me? Or worse what he might do to Charlie.
"Were you with Edward during morning break, Bella?"
"Yes I was"
The principal looked between the two of us then, beneath his desk Edward's hand pushed between the middle of my thighs and caressed my inner thigh making my jaw drop slightly in response. I felt like my ears were actually sweating.
"What were you two doing?"
Without a moments pause Edward's hand left my thigh and took hold of my hand, I turned my head and watched him as he lifted my hand up to his lips, kissing it softly before looking to the reaction of the principal as did I. He shook his head at Edward's immaturity and ability to cover his tracks.
"Get of my sight the both of you"
I was the first to my feet and first out the door hearing Edward close at my heels with every step. I left the office and didn't even make it around the next corner before Edward pushed my back into a set of lockers trapping me between him and them.
"How could you?" I hissed at him
Edward merely smirked in response, before his eyes scanned the hall ensuring no one was going to see him holding me here. To my disappointment we were very much alone.
"What did he do to you?" I asked him.
Edward took hold of my wrist then and with his eyes locked on mine he brushed the sleeve of my jumper up over my arm revealing the bruise from my fall. I hadn't even checked to see the extent of it, but it was nothing compared to what he had done to Simon.
"You were there? You saw?"
"I'm always closer than you think, Miss Swan"
"Is that a threat?"
"Yes it is" He stepped closer, towering over me until all I could see was him "It's a threat to every male in this building who thinks they can put their hands on you"
I swallowed hard in response as Edward's eyes drifted down to my bruise, brushing his finger tips across it before locking eyes with me once more.
"What are you doing?" I asked
With that Edward leaned forward as if ready to kiss me right then in the hall.
"That's what I'd like to know" said a voice across from us then.
Together both Edward and I turned to find we weren't alone anymore, my jaw dropped at the sight before us and I couldn't believe my eyes.
"Jacob? Jacob Black?"
He smiled at me, pleased that I hadn't forgotten my childhood friend, the last time we saw each other we were making a rather unimpressive mud pie together. He had grown of course but he wasn't sporting his usual styles, long gone was the comfortable pants and tanned t-shirts, he was wearing a suit, with a similar style to what I'd seen Edward wearing in the cemetery that night, it was tailored, clean lined. Almost like he too was in the...
Oh sweet lord.
No there was no possible way that this was actually happening. Was Jacob Black part of the family against the Cullen's? The Black family had lived in Forks for many generations, they build successful businesses, even after Billy Black's accident they had continued to grow in power.
No this couldn't be true, there was no way that Jacob Black was in the Mafia, no there was just no possible chance.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Edward asked him
I looked between them then, their eyes locked on each other, Edward grasping at my wrist pulling me ever so slightly to him and out of sight of Jacob.
Who was he protecting here?
"One of our shipments coming in last night was stolen, the guys who did it were in and out in under two minutes, rather impressive considering the security they had to pass through to get there. You wouldn't know anything about that would you?"
Oh my god, he was in the mafia.
Jacob Black and Edward Cullen were the eldest sons of the most powerful men in Forks. Which of course made them enemies, ten seconds of silence and I had cracked through.
Jacob looked my way again and smiled.
"Keep looking at her and I'm gonna break your neck"
I looked up to Edward then who kept his eyes on Jacob although he did tighten his grip on my wrist. Okay, what was going on here? Why was I suddenly worth protecting? Did I have to remind him that he pushed me into a coffin not five days ago?
"So the rumours are true. The future Mrs Cullen has come to Forks. I wish you luck, Bella. You're going to need it"
I locked eyes with my childhood friend for but a moment as he walked away and left me alone with my own enemy.
Edward's phone began to ring startling me and causing him to roll his eyes once again before answering his phone.
"I saw him too" "Follow him"
With his phone still against his ear, Edward looked down at my lips and cupped my cheek before I could slap his hand away making him smirk as he turned and left my side. Finally I could breathe again. How did he manage to make my ears sweat? I mean really what was going on with that?
The rest of the day was a blur, there were rumours building all day about Simon's attack but no mention of my covering for Edward. Some believed Simon had fallen from his skateboard and simply fell down the stairs, others said Simon wanted to blackmail Edward into giving him money and of course there were those who believed the Cullens had written a big fat cheque in order to keep Simon's mouth shut. Somehow I had gotten off the hook Edward had stuck me on and I was free once again, just not from the growing guilt over what Simon had endured. Why would Edward lash out like that? He didn't like me, so why would he suddenly care what happened to me?
I didn't know how his mind worked and I didn't want to try and understand him.
There had been enough drama for one day but there was plenty waiting for me at home.
I dumped my bag on the floor the second I reached my bedroom, I groaned as I tried to fix a knot in my neck. I looked across at my bed to find a large white gift box with a black satin bow around it.
"What now?" I whispered.
I walked over to the gift and wasted no time unravelling the bow to find what lay inside.
"Edward" I hissed through clenched teeth
Inside lay a glock eighteen on a white satin pillow. I held my breath as I took it in, it was brand new. However this was no ordinary gun, it was engraved.
To my disgust Edward had the handle of the gun engraved with a single word.
Virgin
That night I had eaten dinner in my room alone and attempted to get ahead on a few of my assessments so I wasn't playing catch up on my first week at a new school. Luckily some of my notes from my old school covered me a great deal and all I had to do was re-word a few things here and there.
Resting on the pillow next to me my phone binged and I reached for it while reading the last few lines of the text book in front of me then.
I retrieved the phone to find I had a text message from Jessica.
Let's celebrate your first day. Come with me and Angela to Port Angeles tonight!
I looked over to the desk where I had placed the box containing the gun. Edward had not only made me lie for him today but he had thought this was actually funny. Well maybe it was time I had a little fun of my own and see what the infamous Edward Cullen thought about that.
