A Life-Changing Call
MYSTIC FALLS, VIRGINIA
A newly orphaned Elena Gilbert was sat silently on the couch with her Aunt Jenna Summers, the two merely enjoying the quiet moment of peace. It was rare for there to be a peaceful moment in the Gilbert household after all the pain and suffering that had occurred just two months ago.
Only two months ago, the Gilbert siblings Elena and Jeremy had suffered the worst possible thing imaginable. The death of both their parents. While her younger brother Jeremy had withdrawn himself from others, falling down a dark path, Elena was simply trying to keep moving forward.
Just as the trashy movie they were watching goes to commercial a loud ringing from the telephone in the kitchen draws the pair's attention. Elena sighs as she stands, reaching for the phone, assuming it would be either Bonnie or Caroline, her two best friends had been calling at least five times a day, probably worried the brunette had cracked.
"Hello?"
There is a small cough before an unfamiliar voice cuts through the phone. "Yes hello, may I please speak with Miss Jenna Summers?" Elena frowns in slight confusion, before turning to reach the phone towards her aunt "It's for you"
Jenna arches a curious brow as she stares at the phone skeptically, she had a horrible feeling it was going to have to deal with money or owing money to someone. ""Who is it?" Jenna asks but Elena just shrugs and goes back to watching TV while Jenna takes the phone and heads back into the kitchen.
"This is Jenna Summers, may I ask who is calling"
"Yes hello, my name is Martin Wilkes I'm Joyce Summers attorney. I'm sorry to inform you but...Joyce passed away a few days ago"
Jenna's entire body goes still, her hand shaking violently causing her to almost drop the phone. This couldn't be happening, she had just seen Joyce at Miranda and Grayson's funeral, despite the fact she and Joyce barely spoke anymore, if there was something wrong she would know. Joyce was her sister, she would know. Wouldn't she?
"Taking a shaky breath Jenna holds back tears, she could feel her voice breaking she finally summons the courage to speak "No..." She stutters out "...I..um...I saw her, she was fine...she can't..."
""Miss Summers had been suffering from a brain tumor over the past nine months, after her surgery, it seemed as though everything was fine. However, she suffered a brain aneurysm last week and was found by her daughter Brianna.
Jenna couldn't believe it, her sister had been suffering for so long and she had had no idea. A small part of her wanted to scream while another part of her wanted nothing more than to start sobbing. First, she lost Miranda and now Joyce. She had lost both her older sisters, out of the three Summers girls, she was the only one left. Running a hand through her hair she takes a shaky breath as she thinks of her blonde haired niece, a girl she hadn't seen in over 10 years.
"Brianna..." She whispers, the name feeling almost foreign on her lips "Is she okay? Where-can-can I speak to her?"
Elena who was still staring at the television frowns at the mention of her younger cousin. She and Brianna had been very close when they were younger before Brianna's parents had shipped her off to L.A. Yet for some reason last year Brianna had stopped contacting pretty much everyone, she had gone completely radio silent
Rising from her seat Elena walks towards Jenna, whose eyes were now red, with tears streaming down her face as her lips trembled. At that moment Elena knew immediately that something was wrong, very wrong.
Jenna barely noticed Elena moving towards her as she clenches her eyes shut before wiping the tears from her cheeks. Listening to the lawyer she couldn't help but worry for her youngest niece, while Elena and Jeremy had the family to help them through their parent's death...Brianna had no one, especially with Hank yet again unreachable probably in Spain with his assistant.
"I'm very sorry for your loss Miss Summers, however, there is something else that I need to tell you."
At his words Jenna feels her spine straighten, she had a feeling she was about to hear all about Hank's sucky ability to actually be a father " Shortly after her divorce Joyce came to me to change her Will, as Miss Summers had full custody of Brianna and Hank has expressed no interest in trying to fight Joyce's decision, it seems as though Miss Summers wanted you to receive custody of Brianna if anything were to happen to her, stating and I quote 'Jenna you are the strongest person I know and I know we have not been close these last few years but if there is one person I trust to take care of my daughter it is you.'
Jenna stands there frozen, she couldn't believe it, Joyce wanted her to take care of Brianna. First Jeremy and Elena, now Brianna? Could she really do this, take care of three teenagers, emotionally traumatized teenagers on top of that? "As she contemplates what to say she realizes that she was near enough Brianna's only family left, other than a father who could not care less.
She knew despite her fear and worry she didn't have a choice, it was not a matter of if she could do it, but that she had to, she refused to let this girl be alone, she needed her family and that was her Jeremy and Elena, they were all she had left. "I understand, um-what-do I need to do? Should I come there-I can be in California in a couple of days-um"
The Lawyer clearly noticing her voice becoming more panicky by the second sighs trying to calm her. "Well at the moment there is nothing for you to do; as I still must inform the young Miss Summers of what Joyce had decided. At the moment Brianna is staying with her friends, once she is informed of the situation I will have her prepare to come to Mystic Falls within the next two weeks. Funeral details; Joyce pre-prepared before she died, I will send you all the information as she wished to be buried in her hometown. There is one thing which you could do. You see a few months ago Brianna was expelled from Sunnydale High, so you will need to find her some options regarding her education.
Jenna's eyes widen at that, while she knew Brianna had been getting into trouble lately, she never could imagine how one little blonde could manage so much trouble to get thrown out of two schools in less than a year. Honestly, there was a part of her that really didn't want to know because she had a feeling it was worse than she could possibly imagine "Thank you, I can do that, and if there is anything else I need-"
"I will inform you straight away. I'm sorry for your loss Miss Summers."
With that Jenna hangs up the phone and not even a second later she felt that crushing weight on her chest as it all hit her at once. Her two big sisters were gone. Letting out a loud sob the strawberry blonde begins sobbing uncontrollably as her legs crumble causing her to drop to her knees as all the grief hits her at once.
Elena's eyes widen in panic and she quickly runs over crouching down in front of her sobbing aunt, without hesitation wrapping her arms around Jenna as she cries "Jenna what is it, what's wrong?"
Jenna looks up tears streaming down her face as she sobs "They're gone." She whispers through her cries "First Miranda...and now...Joy, they're both gone."
Elena freezes as she listens to Jenna who was still sobbing violently unable to control her heartbreak over losing her siblings. As she hears the mention of the aunt she hadn't seen in years tears slowly form in the brunette's eyes "Aunt Joyce?" She whispers before it all clicks as she spots Jenna's expression.
Her Aunt Joyce was dead which meant Brianna was all alone, just like her and Jeremy.
Running her fingers through Jenna's hair as she comforts her aunt she couldn't help but sniffle, how could one family keep experiencing this much death.
"It just wasn't fair.
