Chapter 1

Alla Sera (Ugo Foscolo)
Forse perché della fatal quiete
tu sei l'immago, a me si cara vieni,
o Sera! E quando ti corteggian liete
le nubi estive e i zeffiri sereni,

Klaus POV:

I breathed in the familiar scent of dense deciduous forest. I could already feel myself longing for the familiar sights and sounds of the French Quarter which I had called home for the past year until some surprising revelations had recently come to light. Similar to many years ago, I no longer felt welcome in New Orleans. Now I found myself back in another home that continually tried to draw me back and then force me to leave again. I slowed the car as I approached the grand home I had inhabited when I last was in Mystic Falls. It was disappointing that this time I was alone, but I knew it was necessary. Rebekah wanted to be a mother and Hayley was more than happy to have help with Hope. Hayley had also found love with none other than my dearest brother. Elijah attempted to conceal his feelings like the gentleman he is, but there was nothing I wanted less than to be caught in a relationship with the little wolf. The one I was most sad to leave was, of course, Hope, but I had to get some things together prior to my family rejoining me in the small and surprisingly supernatural town of Mystic Falls.

I had not intended to lie to Caroline when I promised her I would never return, but the extenuating circumstances required me, as well as my family, to leave New Orleans with haste. For now, Rebekah, Hayley, Elijah, and my Hope, were living with a pack of werewolves in the Appalachian mountains. I was glad to know that I left New Orleans in Marcel's capable hands, with the slight change that he no longer tortures witches in the way he previously had. Oddly enough, although I had to now prepare a home for two siblings, the hybrid mother of my illegitimate child, and the most brilliant little girl in the world almost a thousand miles from our previous home, I was most nervous about confrontations with certain vampires in the area.

I looked up at the mansion that loomed before me and frowned. While I knew this was where I wanted to live I could already hear the complaints from Hayley. Surely it shouldn't be a dealbreaker that I slaughtered her friends here, but I did not care to be lectured about how that was not appropriate for a child to live near. I made a sharp u turn and began driving down the long and winding road. Mystic Falls had a definitive lack of mansions, but I thought about driving towards the town center and see when I saw a home I felt would be appropriate. I suddenly felt a distinct burning in my hands as though I still needed a daylight ring and felt pain deep within me. I was unsure what was happening, but I did not intend to stick around and find out and so I turned back the way I had come and suddenly the pain receded. I pulled my car over on to the side of the road and looked towards the direction of where I felt immense pain. I walked cautiously towards it and suddenly felt the burning again, with a step backwards the pain was gone as quickly as it came.

I ran towards the car taking my phone out and dialing a dear friend. "Klaus?" A deep and heroic voice asked from the other end of the phone, clearly surprised that I had called.

"Stefan, how are you?" I asked not exactly expecting an answer. "The strangest thing just occurred outside of Mystic Falls, are you in the area for a quick chat?" There was silence on the other end of the phone. "Stefan, while I so enjoy our little conversations, I am uninterested in sitting on the phone with someone not responding on the other end of it."

"I'm not in Mystic Falls, none of us are." Stefan responded, his voice short and almost annoyed.

"I'm sorry, do you expect me to believe that none of you are in the Mystic Falls vicinity? It seems highly unlikely with how you all are drawn to the area." I responded, my tone just as aggravated, if not more-so.

"You'll want to call someone else, I can promise you that I will be of no help to you." Stefan said quietly.

"Stefan, my patience is wearing inconceivably thin, now stop with the coyness and tell me what I need to know." I began to accelerate out of frustration.

"Klaus, we can't go to Mystic Falls, there's no magic there now and we would die instantly. I guess you get a little leeway since you're an original hybrid or whatever. But, you're about to blow my cover. Goodbye, Klaus." I heard the sound of Stefan hanging up and let out a small shout.

Of course there were additional problems in Mystic Falls. At that moment I considered whether I should take my family elsewhere, surely a town without magic, whatever that would mean, would not be the safest place for a vampire, werewolf, witch like Hope was, but I believed that this would be the safest place for her in the long term. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a for sale sign on a driveway that appeared to be quite large. I turned left towards the home and sped towards the house. I sauntered out of the car and began to look around. I hesitated at the grand entrance until I realized that there must have been a living owner. I grabbed my phone and went to call the agent when a car entered the driveway. A young man in a suit parked and jogged up towards me.

"Hi Mr. Johnson, you're even earlier than I am! Are you ready to take a look around the property?" Young suit man said with definitive joy in his voice. I presumed that he was the real estate agent for the property.

"Hello, mate," I said with a smile and took a step closer to look right into his eyes. "I'm not Mr. Johnson, but you will be calling him and telling him the property has been sold. Do you have the papers with you?"

"Of course I do, I knew this would be an easy sell." The young real estate agent said opening the folder he was holding.

"Well, aren't we confident?" I smirked and he handed me the papers.

"So, what brings you to the area?" The real estate agent asked and I felt my smile falter.

"From now on," I commanded, staring into his eyes. "Do not speak to me unless I give you permission to do so." I finished signing the papers and handed them back to the agent. "Now, there's nothing else you need from me, you're going to find me the best decorator in the area and have them come by as soon as possible. Understood."

"Understood, sir. It was a pleasure doing business with you." I went to turn around to go into the home and hesitated, turning back towards him.

"Before you leave, forget my face." He stared into my eyes, gave me a quick nod and walked towards his car.

Now, I thought to myself, time to start understanding what the bloody hell is going on in Mystic Falls that had caused such a ruckus.
