Chapter 6:
"Develop enough courage so that you can stand up for yourself and then stand up for someone else."
- Maya Angelou
Caroline POV:
I couldn't believe what was coming out of Elena's mouth, she continued, "You're the last person I'd think would object to me erasing positive memories of Damon from my head." I continued to speed along the highway as I thought of what Bonnie would say in this situation. I tended to be hard on her relationship with Damon, but I knew Bonnie would have tried to be more middle of the road. More than that, I wanted to make sure that someone besides me and Enzo still thought it was possible to bring them back.
"Yeah, but we are literally chasing a lead! What if we find something out? You know, what if Damon returns home and everything returns back to normal and then you're just sitting there all confused...and weird-"
"And then Alaric will bring back my memories."
"But-" I started before Elena cut me off.
"But what? Go ahead Caroline, say what you need to say. I don't want to pressure you into agreeing."
I paused again, I didn't want to bring up another sore subject, but I wanted to be honest with my best friend. "I don't know what to say...I was actually just trying to think of what Bonnie would say."
I could almost hear Elena's breath catch. "And?" She asked expectantly.
"And she'd say that you should do what's best for you." I finally stated. Elena paused and I was worried I had gone to far. I knew she wanted me to agree, but it was difficult to agree with the purposeful manipulation of her memories for the past three years.
"Look, I think it's great that you still have hope-I really do. But, for my own survival i need to let him go." Elena sighed, a distinct lack of hope evident in her voice.
I forced a smile, "Well then go on with your 'What Would Bonnie Bennett Do?' plan I'll make bumper stickers."
"i love you." Elena said into the phone.
"i love you, too." I replied before handing up. I was suddenly very self-conscious that both Klaus and Enzo had listened to that very personal conversation between myself and Elena. Almost on cue, Enzo spoke up.
"Girl bonding, very sweet. I heard you dropped out of school."
I couldn't believe that he had brought up such a personal, and slightly embarrassing topic in such a small and confined space. I also could have sworn that I heard Klaus chuckle a little under his breath. "And I heard that you were a lurker who was spying on my life." I clipped meeting his eyes in my rear-view mirror. I tried to focus on the road and spoke up, "When do we exit?"
"Soon...eh you should reconsider. Looks can only get a girl so far these days." Enzo said leaning forward and putting his head between Klaus and mine. I thought I saw Klaus tense a bit, but could barely see behind Enzo's big head.
"Yeah, well I'm not taking feminist tips from a guy who just used his tongue to get secrets out of a coat check girl." I said clearly annoyed and catching Enzo's eye.
"Garment attendant." He corrected me, which earned an eye-roll from me.
"You just made that up." I responded and looked back out at the road as we all settled into a silence. I was surprised at Klaus's lack of interjections, but decided to ask the question I actually wanted to know. "So, did you also make up the Gemini coven lead too? Cause I've never heard of them. Who are they?"
I heard Klaus take a breath as if he was going to respond before Enzo answered me. "No idea, that's not where we're headed."
Klaus and I both turned to look at the moronic vampire in between us. "What?! Wait, where are we going?" I asked.
"I suggest you answer quickly, mate. I don't know you and have no qualms in tearing your head off."
I shot a look at Klaus before returning to looking at the road. "Klaus, just like chill, okay? Seriously Enzo, what is going on?"
"You'll see, I believe it's the next exit."
We looked at the sign in front of us that read: Welcome to Georgia
"How did you find him?" I demanded as he directed me through the suburbs of Savannah to a house where he said Stefan would be.
"Not important, but making the next left here is important." Enzo instructed.
"While I love seeing my favorite Salvatore brother, I agree with Caroline that bringing magic back to Mystic Falls is far more important." Klaus stated sounding incredibly irate. Honestly, I was less nervous about the magic right now and more nervous about what Stefan thought of my many voicemails. Now I would have to see him accompanied by two vampires who shamelessly flirt with any girl they see and hope they don't notice the blush creeping into my cheeks.
"Listen mate, I want to know what in the bloody hell Stefan has been doing this whole time so I can bring my best friend back from wherever he went." Enzo responded before reaching his arm out in front of him to point at a cute house. "There, that's the one."
I could tell that Klaus was fuming next to me, but all I could focus on was parking the car and considering what to say if Stefan was really here. Klaus and Enzo got out of the car and I took a moment to center myself with two deep breaths before following them. Klaus glanced at me as I got out of the car, no doubt wondering what took the extra moment, but thankfully he did not ask. I could hear small birds throughout the neighborhood and smell a dinner being cooked inside the house in front of us. I walked up behind Enzo and Klaus and nearly asked if we were definitely in the right place before a beautiful woman pulled her car up beside us and turned it off. "Hi!" She chirped getting out of the car and smiling at us. "Are you all from around here?"
Enzo smiled slightly before shaking his head. "No actually, I believe our old friend Stefan lives around here. Is this your house?" He asked pointing to the home we all were standing in front of.
We must of surprised her because her smile began to falter, "No," she started looking from the house and back to us. "This is my...friend's place. I didn't know Stefan had friends coming to visit."
This obviously pleased Enzo who took a step closer to her and began to compel her, "Lovely, then go open the door for us so we can see our dear pal Stefan. I think he'll be inviting us to dinner."
The woman walked up the steps to the house and I hit Enzo, "Why are you such a jerk all the time, you didn't have to compel her."
"On the contrary, Caroline, I think it was handled well. I probably would have started throwing items through the window. But, I am known for having quite the temper." Klaus said with a sly wink which made me gawk at him.
"Let's close our mouth, lovely, time to go call Stefan into the discussion I think." Enzo said as the woman opened the door to the house.
We followed her up the stairs and heard the unmistakable voice of Stefan Salvatore say, "Hey." to the woman in front of us as she walked into the house with ease.
"Hey." She said cautiously, I was suddenly concerned he had warned her about any friends, but wanted to believe that Stefan didn't need to go around compelling people to be friends with him...or whatever they were.
Stefan began to talk to her, obviously oblivious to our presence. "Perfect timing, I was just-"
"I ran into some of your friends." The woman said interrupting him.
"What...where?" I could hear the panic rise in Stefan's voice before his friend responded.
"Here." She responded.
"That's our cue." Enzo joked and strolled into the house with Klaus behind him and I followed behind Klaus.
"Stefan! You are a hard man to track down." Enzo gregariously said as we walked into the quaint home. I could see the panic in Stefan's eyes as he looked from the woman to Enzo, to Klaus and finally to me. "I wasn't sure if your new friend would invite us in, but she said this was your place which means open invitation for all your mates right?" There was an uncomfortable pause before Klaus decided to get involved and asked, "Got any bourbon?"
Stefan caught my eyes again and I looked for any sign of guilt or happiness to see me, but the only thing I saw was annoyance which could have been a reflection of the look I was giving to him.
