Love Dream Days
Chapter 6: Idols and Romance
Girl bands are among the most popular things these days around Japan. It even includes DJ bands and formations along with many smaller and sometimes larger idol units. One such unit is the idol girl band called Pastel Palettes, which consists of Aya, Chisato, Hina, Eve and Maya. The girls are currently at the end of a group photo shoot (it's a rare occurrence actually) and are gathering their stuff to leave.
"Good work today, everyone~" Aya said while smiling.
Chisato sighed but replied with a smile "You too, Aya-chan, although you should really pay attention to when they actually take the photos. How many times did you close your eyes when that happened?"
Aya sweatdropped as Hina laughed and answered "I counted at least 20 times~ That has to be a new bopping record~"
"Hina-chan!" Aya yelled and blushed hard in embarrassment.
Maya laughed a bit and said "Well, we did finish our work, so everything should be fine." She then turned to speak to Chisato "Also, I remember someone blushing so hard in a few photos that they asked for at least 30 reshoots~"
Chisato blushed and replied "I never said I'm perfect." This was especially true when pictures of just her and Aya were taken. She even asked the photographer for a few of those pics just for herself.
"I think it was admirable that none of you gave up until they took the perfect photo~ It was very Bushido of you!" Eve stated while smiling.
Aya sweatdropped and asked "I don't understand why it's Bushido…"
"Just don't question it and smile…" Chisato replied with a sweatdrop of her own.
Once the girls were ready to leave, Maya asked the rest of her group "You guys want to get something to eat?"
Chisato smiled and replied "I think I can join you now. I don't have anything urgent left for today."
"Really? You're usually so busy, Chisato-chan." Aya said while smiling a bit.
Eve seemed to be thinking a little before saying "Chisato-san, you seem to have more and more free time these days."
"Hey, yeah! Now that Eve-chi mentioned it, she's right!~" Hina said while looking surprised but still smiling.
Chisato thought about it for a second, then replied "That's true… maybe it's just a slow season."
Aya replied to that by saying "This is the first time it happened since I have known you, Chisato-chan."
The blonde bassist simply shrugged as she said "It can still happen."
Maya decided to return to the topic she suggested and asked "What do you girls feel like having?"
"I'd like something sweet~" Aya answered enthusiastically.
Chisato quietly murmured to herself "You're already the sweetest, Aya-chan~"
Before the girls could continue their conversation, all of their phones buzzed, signaling about a message they had just received. After checking them, Eve stated what hers read "Oh, it seems the producer wants to see us."
"I got that message too~" Hina replied, still being her usual bubbly self.
Chisato thought for a second before stating "This has to be something big, since we all got this text."
Aya nodded in agreement and announced "Let's go see our manager and then we can go eat~"
The other 4 girls nodded and the group left for their manager's office. Little did they know that a lot of complications would be coming from this meeting.
Pastel Palettes' manager's office
"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!"
"Ow… I knew you girls were gonna take the news bad… but that scream was louder than I expected…" the manager stated after informing the group why they are there.
Aya was in tears and could only ask "Why…? Why does Pastel Palettes have to disband?!"
Yes, this was the big news that the girls' manager wanted to discuss with them. He sighed rubbing his head and answered "It's not for sure yet, but… we may have to think about… a different approach for the band…"
"What does that mean exactly?" Chisato stated while being upset and crossing her arms over her chest.
The manager pulled out quite a few magazines from his desk before he continued "I take it you are familiar with these people…" Upon closer inspection, the girls saw that every magazine had one of their couple friends on the cover (some actually had all 5 couples, meaning Chu2 and Pareo, Kasumi and Arisa, Kokoro and Kanon, Yukina and Lisa, Ran and Moca)
Eve smiled brightly as she answered "Of course we are~ They're our friends~"
"And it's really nice they can be with the person they love~" Aya stated very happily.
The manager sighed and said "That's the problem…"
Every girl got confused by that but Maya was able to ask "I don't understand what you mean, Sir."
"Thanks to this Chu2 girl's confession and proposal on stage, the RAS sales have increased by 140% the following month alone…" After hearing that information, the Pastel Palette girls got shocked incredibly "The same is true about each and every other band that announced a kind of romantic relationship that a band member or more have."
Hina raised her hand while asking "People like romance that much?"
"First of all, you're not in a classroom, so you don't have to raise your hand…" the blue-haired girl smiled and complied, then the manager continued "Second, yes. It got to the point that even extends beyond bands and idols. There is this DJ formation called… what was it… Happy something…"
"Happy Around?~ I keep checking the art page of their VJ~ She's very good~" Aya stated while looking proud at that.
The manager continued "Yes, them. Their singer and VJ announced they're dating each other and now their popularity has doubled." The girls were completely stunned by this but the manager kept going "Then there are these local idols from some long-named small town… I can't remember it…"
"The Nagarekawa Girls?" Eve asked, which caused all the other people in the room to look at her astonished. She just smiled and stated "I like their activities~ It's so Bushido!~"
The manager sweatdropped and said "Right… anyway, even people who aren't associated with performances got a lot more popularity. You girls know that game company called Eagle Jump?"
"Oh~ You're talking about Aoba and Hifumi being a couple, right?~" Hina asked and it was her turn to receive the astonished stares. The girl kept smiling as she said "They're so bopping together~"
"How do you even know them?" Chisato asked her blue-haired friend.
Hina smiled and answered "I bought one of their game and started messaging with some people on their character development team~"
Maya smiled awkwardly at that and said "I now have more questions than answers…"
"The point is…" their manager started saying while trying to steer the conversation back to the original topic "… units with a known or public relationship between its members, or just a member in general, have skyrocketed in popularity. In fact, they gained greater fame than idol units that have been around for years."
Chisato thought for a bit and asked "Is that also the reason why we had fewer jobs these past months?"
The manager sighed once again and answered while hanging his head low "Unfortunately… yes…"
"So… what can we do to save Pastel Palettes?" Aya asked looking ready to fight.
"I admire the fire in your eyes and the loyalty to your friends and the band…" the manager said "… but we only have 2… very not good options…"
Maya raised an eyebrow and asked "Which are?"
"We either scrap the band…"
"NOT HAPPENING!" All the girls shouted at the same time.
The manager smiled a bit and then continued "… or we hope one of you confesses to someone you may like."
Hina looked shocked for real (probably the first time in her whole life) and asked "That's all we can do?"
"To make matters worse… we only have 6 weeks until the board decides to go public with your cancellation…" This caused even more panic among the girls. Their manager continued "I realize this is a tough spot. Even if any of you have anyone in mind you may like, the timing is just awful. This will seem like it only happens because we're desperate…"
Eve decided to say "What if I find someone who seems good to me? Maybe-"
"Stop right there!" The manager stated with a raised voice, which caused everyone to go silent in the room. "I won't allow you to do that! Forcing feelings that you don't even have towards a stranger is wrong on so many levels! We aren't like that!"
"That's nice but… we're really left without options here…" Maya stated matter of factly.
The manager sighed again and said "I think I can convince some of the people to postpone the deadline but… we really have to think hard about what to do for the band. For now… try to get some rest and think about what can be done to keep you girls together… I'm open to anything. Aside from that forced feelings idea."
The girls left the office after that, feeling confused and disappointed. Among them, Chisato felt the most disappointed (mostly in herself) and she decided to get to her group as quick as she could.
A little later, Chu2's apartment
"They want to break up Pastel Palettes?!" Everyone in the room shouted, not believing their ears. Chisato had just finished telling them about the meeting with their manager just a little while ago and saying everyone was shocked about it would be an understatement.
Moca looked like she was thinking and said "Isn't this a little extreme? I mean… Pastel Palettes is still pretty popular."
"True, but it seems we can't compete with any of you anymore…" Chisato answered while looking sad.
Arisa sighed then said "I hate to say this but… you really should have confessed earlier…"
The blonde bassist for Pastel Palettes could only sink into her seat in shame as she replied "I know…"
Hagumi was confused and asked "Isn't this good though? Chisato-senpai tells Aya-senpai she likes her, they get together and bam! Everything's fine again!~"
Yukina answered her "That is not a solution, Kitazawa-san. Shirasagi-san also knows this, because it would seem she is only doing this to save her band."
"Oh… that's bad…" The Hello Happy bassist said while looking sad.
Kokoro looked around the room and asked "I know this is off topic but how come only Rei is here from RAS?"
Said girl could only sigh and answer "It's because of what Shirasagi-san said…"
"Huh? What do you mean?" Chisato asked while looking up at the other girl.
Rei took the remote from the table, turned on the TV and said "You talked about your meeting while Pareo and Masuki were also in the room…"
Chisato still didn't understand but that all changed when she saw what was on TV. A news program showed her manager's office building but the interesting thing was the people in front of the entrance. Pareo and Masuki were holding signs and shouting something about not cancelling their favorite bands at the building while Chu2 and Rokka tried stopping them. After a minute, Pareo even ran up to the reporter, took her microphone and almost shouted at the camera "We shall not let anyone cancel Pastel Palettes! All fans unite! Revolution!"
"PAREO! It's not decided yet! Calm down already!" Chu2 said as she was seen running up to her wife (it's easier to spell) and trying to take the microphone away.
"You should be on my side, Chu2-chan!"
"I am! That's why I'll buy this agency if they dare break up the girls!"
That seemed to have worked as Pareo stopped struggling and asked "Really? You would do that?"
"Of course~ You're my wife and Pastel Palettes is important to you, so I'll make sure they stay the way they are for you~"
"Aaaaaaaaawwwwww~ Chu2-chan~~~"
Rei turned off the TV after that and said "I think we all learned a lesson today…"
"Yeah, Chu2 has way too much money…" Tomoe stated with a sweatdrop, which earned her a stare from the rest of the girls. "What?"
Sayo shook her head in annoyance then turned to Chisato "Anyway, what are you going to do now, Shirasagi-san? I assume you still have feelings for Maruyama-san."
The blonde-haired girl sighed and answered "Of course I do but… I have no idea… I really should have confessed when I had the chance…"
"Well… it's still not too late… I think…" Ran stated but she wasn't sure about it herself.
Before anyone could say something, Chisato's phone started ringing. She took it out of her pocket and checked who was calling her. "It's Aya-chan…"
"Aya-senpai is probably devastated over the news and wants to calm down by talking with you." Kasumi stated with a sad smile.
Arisa rolled her eyes and said "If that's true, I'm going to pay for all of our dates next month."
Chisato answered her phone and put it on speaker for the others to hear as well "Aya-chan… are you okay?"
"Hi, Chisato-chan… I won't lie… I've been better… what about you?"
"It was rather shocking for me too…"
"I know the feeling… do you want to go to that Café we used to always visit back in the day? When we were just preparing to become Pastel Palettes? It would be good to… talk with you about stuff… anything… it may help me calm down too…"
Arisa's mouth dropped open as Kasumi lightly giggled while hugging her.
Chisato answered "Of course, Aya-chan. It would do us both good."
"Thank you so much… then how about we meet there at 9:00 a.m.? We have a break from school tomorrow."
The blonde bassist smiled and replied "Sounds great, Aya-chan. Try to relax until then, okay?"
"I'll do my best… I could say the same to you though… I'll see you tomorrow then… Bye~" Aya hung up after Chisato said goodbye to her as well.
Lisa walked up to her and asked "Chisato-san… you do know this is a date, right?"
"It's just 2 friends counselling each other. I just wish it was a date…" Chisato replied while looking sad.
Yukina turned to Kanon and asked "Was I that oblivious too?"
The blue-haired drummer laughed awkwardly with a sweatdrop and answered "We all were…"
Kaoru walked up to her childhood friend and asked "Being so blind to romance can be an advantage as well, Chi-chan~"
Chisato felt completely annoyed and replied "Talk like that more and I'll tell everyone about the 'incident', Kao-chan."
The Hello Happy guitarist paled and retreated to her band members. Ran asked "Do we want to know…?"
"Moca-chan is interested~" Moca stated but she never actually got her answer.
Chisato left a couple of minutes later but Misaki stated "I'll keep an eye on them tomorrow, just to be safe."
"I'll tag along with you." Tomoe said which got a nod from the group. By the time Pareo and Chu2 got back along with Masuki and Rokka, the other girls had already left and only Rei was there still. Obviously, Chu2 didn't complain about that.
The next day, at the Café, 9 a.m.
Aya rushed to the Café where Chisato had already been waiting. When she arrived, she took a few breaths before saying "So sorry… I'm late… I overslept…"
The other girl giggled a little and replied "It's fine, Aya-chan. You're actually on time~"
"Oh… good… I'm glad. Let's go inside then~" Aya said as Chisato held the door open for her. Once inside, they took a seat close to the window and the singer stated "It's been so long, I can barely remember what this place used to be like."
The blonde girl giggled and said "Same here. I guess the only good side of everything here is that we all have a bit more free time."
Aya looked at the table sadly and said "I would rather keep practicing with everyone and spending time together…"
Chisato's mood dropped after that as well but she held Aya's hand in hers as she declared "We will make it happen again, Aya-chan! I swear, we'll think of something to bring those days back."
The pink-haired girl smiled and replied "Thank you, Chisato-chan~"
Outside the Café, Tomoe and Misaki could see the 2 girls from the window. Misaki said "I'm glad they sat to a spot we can easily observe."
"Yeah. Although, I still say this is a date." The Afterglow drummer stated while crossing her arms.
Misaki rolled her eyes and replied "Obviously we know it but not them."
Tomoe kept looking at the Pastel girls as they were ordering drinks but she also caught sight of something else a little bit away from them. "Misaki, do you see something shining a little in the back near one of the plants?"
"Hm? What do you mean?" The DJ tried to find what her friend was talking about but she couldn't notice anything "I don't see anything suspicious."
Tomoe scratched her head a bit and replied "If you say so…" She was still sure she saw something but decided to let go of it for now. After about another 10 minutes, they decided to leave Aya and Chisato for their… meeting and will ask for details later from the blonde bassist.
3 weeks later, Chu2's apartment
"Something isn't right…" Chisato stated while deep in thought. For the past 3 weeks she and Aya met with each other almost every day and went somewhere. The bassist wouldn't find that strange but sometimes her pink-haired friend would pick odd places to visit.
During the first week, they mostly went to the same Café but by the end of it, Aya had suggested going to the park for a walk. Chisato didn't think this was odd but during the whole time she was there, she could have sworn someone else was following them. The feeling kept coming back to her as she and her friend went to an amusement park the next week, an arcade after that and even to the aquarium (where they met up with Kokoro and Kanon on a date).
"What do you mean, Shirasagi-san?" Rokka asked as she put some rice balls on the table.
Chisato was still in thought but she was able to answer "Since the meeting, I have spent some time with Aya-chan nearly every day."
Lisa smirked as she asked "And the problem with that is?~"
The bassist shook her head and replied "I'm happy about that but… the places we went…"
"Oh, Arisa took me to that arcade for a date last month too~" Kasumi said with a smile.
"Kokoro-chan and I visit the aquarium once a week~" Kanon stated while hugging her girlfriend close.
"Ran took Moca-chan to that amusement park yesterday~" Moca said while munching on a loaf of bread from Saaya's bakery.
"Chu2-chan and I go to that park on Saturdays~" Pareo said while having Chu2 sit on her lap.
The producer suddenly realized something "Is it possible Maruyama asked you girls about places she could go with Shirasagi?"
"What? That's nonsense. Right…?" Chisato stated but after Chu2 said that… she couldn't deny the possibility anymore.
Yukina spoke next "I did see Maruyama-san talking with Lisa not too long ago."
Lisa sweatdropped and laughed awkwardly as she said "Well… I told her Yukina and I went to see a movie last Sunday."
"Hey… we're going to see a movie on Friday too…" Chisato said as her eyes grew wide.
Rinko decided to voice her thoughts next "Then this means… Maruyama-san… asked dating advice… from the others… correct?"
"BINGO!" Kokoro shouted while jumping and popping confetti.
"Kokoro! That was supposed to be a secret!" Kanon jumped up next as she was panicking.
The Hello Happy leader sat back down and scratched the back of her head awkwardly as she said "Oh yeah~ Whoops, my bad~ Hehehe~"
Chisato blushed hard and said "I don't understand! Why did she do this?!"
It was at that moment that something struck Sayo "Shirasagi-san… what do you know about Hina's schedule regarding the past few weeks?"
"Um… she kept saying she had barely anything to do, so she mostly was at home." The other girl replied.
"That's odd…" Sayo began saying while thinking "… because Hina kept saying she's been overwhelmed with work these past few weeks."
Every girl was surprised but Ran was able to say "Come to think of it… I saw Hina-san 2 days ago walking home from work. At least, that's what she told me."
"Moca-chan remembers that too~ She also had a camera with her~" Moca said as she was with her girlfriend at the time.
Chu2 asked the next question "What kind of camera?"
Moca swallowed the food in her mouth before answering "A high-quality one. Nothing too flashy but not small either."
Tomoe and Misaki looked at each other before the drummer said "Actually… Shirasagi-san, we have a confession to make… 3 weeks ago, Misaki-san and I followed you on your date…"
"It wasn't-" Chisato was about to say her usual thing but decided to stop since it was pointless "While I take offense to your actions, I can understand why you did it. Go on."
"I saw something shining a little bit away from your table." Tomoe said as she now has an idea what that may have been. "You don't think…"
That's when it all hit Chisato. She knew exactly what happened and became furious because of it. "Okay, I need to talk with my manager!" and then the bassist bolted out of the building like a rocket.
"Wow, look at her go. Hehehe~ I like this band more every day~" Masuki stated with a smile as Rokka simply sighed.
Pastel Palettes' agency building
To say the staff and workers of the building were shocked would be an understatement as a very angry Chisato was seen almost dashing through the hallway in anger. She went past the practice room where the other girls were. Hina leaned out the door and said "Hi, Chiasto-san!"
"I'll deal with you later, paparazzi!" was the only reply Hina got as the bassist kept marching to the manager's office.
Hina was confused for a second but then she realized what happened "Aya-chan…"
"Yes?"
"She knows!"
Aya panicked and rushed after Chisato with the rest of the band following her.
Chisato burst into her manager's office and yelled "How dare you!?"
The manager sweatdropped and asked "I beg your pardon?"
"Don't play dumb with me! You tried to set me up with Aya-chan!" Chisato shouted as she stomped to his desk.
The manager dropped his papers and said "I know what this looks like but-"
Chisato didn't want to hear any of it and kept going "Shut up! How dare you toy with my feelings?! How dare you do this to Aya-chan?! You've ruined everything! I'll never be able to even look at her the same way as before because you manipulated her!"
"Chisato… chan…" the bassist turned around and saw something she never wanted to see: Aya crying her eyes out while being collapsed on the ground.
Chisato finally calmed down and looked worriedly at her crush "Aya-chan?"
"I'm sorry… please… I… " Aya tried to speak but all she could do was run away from there.
The other girls appeared at the door and they all looked depressed. Maya sighed and told Chisato "You got it all wrong… this was Aya's idea…"
The blonde girl's eyes went wide and she could only ask "W-w-what?"
The manager sighed and explained "After the meeting 3 weeks ago, most of you girls left my office quickly… but… Maruyama-san came to with something…"
Flashback
3 weeks earlier, 2 minutes after the meeting
A knock was heard on the manager's door and he answered "Enter" only to be surprised by Aya standing there. "Anything else I can help you with, Maruyama-san?"
The girl took a deep breath and said "I'm in love with Chisato-chan. I have been for a long time now…"
"That's nice but we can't do anything about it now. As I said, it will seem like we're only doing this to save the band."
Aya stood her ground and declared "I still want to try!"
The manager was surprised and said "I strongly recommend you reconsider. This could end badly for the both of you… We'll figure out something better, just give us some time."
"NO!" Aya almost shouted and continued "I'm aware it's risky… I know it will hurt me… a lot… and Chisato-chan as well… but I'm done hiding my feelings! My friends have lovely relationships now because they took risks… I… want the same with Chisato-chan… I've decided to show her my feelings!"
The manager rubbed his forehead and sighed very deeply "I'll support you then…" Aya smiled brightly at that but her manager quickly added "Just promise me you'll be discreet…"
"Sure~ You can leave it to me~" Aya said happily as she was about to leave.
"Maruyama-san…" The pink-haired girl turned around to face her manager as he said "… I truly hope you know what you're doing… this can easily destroy your chances…"
Aya smiled sadly and replied "I know… but I have to try…" then left the office
Flashback end
"That's what happened…" the manager said as Chisato was tearing up.
"She… she loves me?"
"Of course she does!" Eve yelled while looking upset "She kept talking about you all the time and always wanted to be with you!" She calmed down a little before continuing "I gave her the camera… so Hina could take photos of your outings…"
It was Hina's turn to talk next "Aya-chan wanted to confess to you this weekend… then tell you everything and use the pictures to save our group."
Maya spoke next "Even if you didn't feel the same way towards Aya, we still could have used the photos to buy us some more time…"
"What have I done…?" Chisato muttered as she collapsed in front of the others. Then it struck her what Maya said "Maya-san… the way you talked about my feelings now… does that mean…"
Maya nodded and answered "We all knew… that's why we helped Aya-san… she was the only one who probably didn't know…"
Chisato wiped away some of her tears, stood up, and darted out of the office. "Shirasagi-san!" the manager shouted after her.
"I have to find her!" she yelled back.
"I'm sure she's in the practice room~" Hina said with a smile.
Chisato nodded but also said "I still have a bone to pick with you, Hina-chan" before running off.
During that time, Aya was curled up in a ball in the middle of the practice room while crying her eyes out. "I was prepared for this… but still… it hurts… so much…"
"Me too…" came Chisato's voice from the door.
Aya quickly sat up and panicked "Chisato-chan?! I-I-I have to go!"
"Aya!" Chisato yelled and quickly lunged at her crush, pinning her down on the floor "We need to talk."
The pink-haired girl gulped a big one but nodded sadly as she looked away "I'm sorry… Chisato-chan… I just… wanted to be with you…" Chisato had enough of her own insecurities and decided to do something daring. She gave a kiss to Aya's forehead. The other girl was surprised and could only ask "Chisato… chan?"
The blonde bassist smiled at her crush as she said "I love you, Aya… I should have told you much sooner…"
Aya could barely believe but she started smiling "Chisato~"
"I'm sorry that I have hurt you back there… I thought the manager was toying with my feelings…" Chisato said while feeling bad about what happened earlier.
Aya hugged her and kissed her cheek "I'm sorry too… I just wanted to tell you… but… I was scared…"
The bassist smiled and giggled as she said "Wish I was scared too… I was actually hopeless~"
The singer giggled and said "I won't let you be that anymore, Chisato~"
Chisato then finally asked the question "Does that mean you'll be my girlfriend?~"
"Of course~" Aya answered before the 2 girls solidified their new relationship with a loving kiss. After they got up to their feet, they heard a few people clapping. When they turned around, they saw the rest of their band and their manager with smiles on their faces.
"Finally! Took you 2 long enough!" Hina yelled while showing a very big grin.
"You two are so Bushido together!~" Eve stated while being happy and tearing up a little.
Maya simply said "Congratulations!"
The manager walked up to them and asked "Well… are you 2 willing to go public with your relationship?" Chisato and Aya looked at each other before nodding. This made the manager smile and say "Then we've got a lot of work ahead of us."
1 week later, Chu2's apartment
"Pastel Palettes is saved~" Chisato and Aya both announced which was met with wild clapping from Pareo and Masuki.
Chu2 sighed and said "At least Pareo will be calm again."
"Chu2-chan, don't embarrass me~" Pareo stated while blushing a bit.
Aya walked up to Pareo and said "Pareo-san, thank you for your support. Chisato and I agreed that you should have this~ Tada~" she said as she showed a small figure of herself and Chisato in their stage costumes while hugging each other.
Pareo's eyes sparkled as she replied "Oh my God! Can I really have it?!" Chisato nodded happily and the RAS keyboardist happily accepted "Chu2-chan!~ Look what I have~"
The producer smiled and patted Pareo on the head as she said "I'm happy to have you back like this, Dear~"
Aya giggled as she hugged Chisato "They're really cute together."
The blonde bassist nodded and said "Yes~ And it finally doesn't annoy me anymore~" She then kissed Aya's cheek.
"So this is where you've been coming to, Onee-chan~" Hina said happily as Sayo sighed in annoyance. Chisato invited all of her band members to start attending the meetings.
Sayo simply shrugged and replied "I can go wherever I please."
Hina jumped and shouted "I'll help my Onee-chan to be with Tsugumi~"
Sayo paled and started chasing her sister around the room while shouting "Who told you about that?!"
The rest of the girls in the room laughed happily at the exchange of the sisters. If anybody is wondering how Hina figured out about Tsugumi… truth be told… Sayo can't hide her diary well…
