Chapter 1 – An Introduction
Chrissy Cunningham presented as an Omega just before her 15th birthday, much to the shock of her Beta parents. Her father didn't understand Omegas and found it easier to follow his wife's instruction. Her mother decided that if Chrissy was an Omega, then she would be the perfect Omega. Laura spent her entire life aiming for perfection, the perfect husband, the perfect home, the perfect children. If she couldn't have a normal Beta then she would have the best Omega, by whatever means necessary.
Chrissy started dieting to maintain a petite figure even before she presented, her mother insisted that she needed to lose her baby fat faster. After presenting she was kept on a rigorous schedule of diet and exercise to stay slight. She was inspected regularly to make sure her skin, nails and hair were clean and healthy. She was allowed to join cheerleading as a form of exercise and to show off her natural personality. Like most Omega's she was bubbly and optimistic causing her to excel at cheerleading.
All of her mother's expectations came to a head when Laura and Phillip Cunningham introduced their daughter to the Carvers and their son Jason, an Alpha.
Jason was, demanding, handsy and he didn't smell right. Chrissy didn't like the match and when she voiced her thoughts her mother slapped her. She was told under no uncertain terms that Jason was her chosen Alpha and she needed to start spending time with him and get used to his scent. Chrissy did as she was told and quickly learned to just smile and nod and follow along, doing that kept her safe from her mother and Jason.
But, one thing still bothered her, this scent at school. She tried to follow it a few times and always stumbled into a group of people. Never could she single the source of the scent out. It was the scent she imagined when her heat hit, and it was the scent that calmed her when Jason got angry. She hoped one day to find the owner and never let him go. Because whoever the scent belonged to was certainly her true mate.
Eddie Munson was an Alpha, not that many people noticed his designation. He didn't have much of a pack, his uncle was an Alpha that lost his mate young, his parents both died young as well and he didn't have any siblings. He generally stuck with the younger kids in school, protecting them and forming a pseudo pack dubbed the Hellfire club. The freaks and dweebs and fellow nonconforming beings that would have been eaten alive by the jocks of Hawkins High.
Eddie didn't mind being an alpha most of the time, except for his problem named Chrissy Cunningham. The day she came back to school after presenting he knew she was his mate. And he panicked. He ran and spent the rest of the week with Reefer Rick trying to drown out her scent. Eventually he returned to classes. He caught himself watching her, looking out for her as she transitioned and found her footing and he worried. He worried that her Beta parents and friends weren't helping her, that she wasn't gaining weight the way most Omegas did around their heats. And he was absolutely devastated when Jason Carver put his arm around Chrissy and introduced her as his girlfriend at the start of their sophomore year. Eddie flunked that year and told himself that it was his way of sticking around and watching out for her a bit longer. Because as angry as he was with Carver, he was angrier with himself for being such a coward.
The start of Chrissy's senior year was met with a personal resolution, finally make contact with the owner of The Scent, Eddie Munson. She spent the last 2 years searching and finally, finally knew who it belonged to. She didn't care if he had failed to graduate twice now, she could help him with that, she had notecards and highlighters and a can-do attitude. She didn't care that he was dealing drugs behind the school. She observed that he pointedly refused to sell to the younger kids and never delt anything harder than weed on school grounds. Over the years she also noticed the way he watched over the outsiders, drew attention away from them and took the brunt of the bullying himself. He was a good Alpha despite what others may think of him.
Others being Jason and his posse of stereotypical Alphas at school. Others being her parents who she knew wouldn't take kindly to her breaking things off with Jason for a 'nobody, trailer trash.' She knew he was more than what any of them thought.
Even still, she was very afraid of breaking the carefully constructed cage around her. Afraid of defying her parents and angering Jason just for Eddie to reject her. As obsessed as she was with his scent, he should have been at least drawn to her but, he kept his distance. So, she was afraid to leave her cage as much as she was terrified of staying.
Chrissy spent August and September creating space between her and Jason, not waiting for him to walk her to class, declining rides home from school. And pointedly keeping space between them at the lunch table, much to his annoyance.
Jason let her continue to avoid him into October but, as Homecoming approached, he became increasingly frustrated with her. On Monday the 14th he pulled her by the arm away from her locker and into his arms. He tried scenting her but, Chrissy blocked him putting her hand between them. "Jason, enough. I think you know that I don't want you scenting me anymore."
This was met by bared teeth and blatant refusal. His grip on her tightened and she let out a yelp, causing not only Alphas to look at them but, the closer Betas to glance over also. Try as she might to be brave, looking into Jason's stormy eyes scared her and she started to shake. "Let - let me go Jason. I'm breaking up with you."
He let out a snort, then a laugh and another, giving her arm a squeeze, "Look at you, think you're going to walk away from me? I'm your Alpha." Another sharp squeeze, "Now, your mother is going to take you dress shopping this weekend for homecoming. Let her pick out your dress, after all her taste is much more refined than yours." He leaned into her face, "So next Saturday you and I will be the envy of every couple in this school."
Chrissy had a terrible vision of just that happening. Jerking her arms free she slapped Jason across the face. The hallway went silent, many Alphas bared their teeth while looking at Jason, after all, an Omega doesn't strike out unless provoked. And a slap to the face was quite the message.
Taking a steadying breath Chrissy straightened her back and loudly said, "You are not my Alpha, leave me alone. Please." Not staying to hear him argue she turned around and caught sight of a few freshmen in Hellfire t-shirts. They stood off to the side with a read headed girl, who gave a small smile and nod as she met Chrissy's eyes. Smiling back, she walked a little taller; it felt good having that small show of support from someone.
That afternoon, riding on the courage she felt breaking up with Jason, she decided to approach a Beta named Robin that she had seen with Eddie's group of friends.
Robin was sitting at a table on the far end of the library, books and notes strewn around her. She was seated far enough out of the way that she startled when a timid voice sounded next to her, "Hi, you're Robin?"
Jerking out of her reverie Robin turned to see the head cheerleader standing next to her. "Uh..yeah, and you're Chrissy?"
The other girl smiled and nodded, "Yes, sorry to startle you. Do you mind if I sit and, um, talk to you?"
Robin slowly looked around the near empty library and raised her brow, "I guess, yeah. Is there something you need?"
Chrissy shifted from foot to foot and bit her lip, an uncommon show of nerves for the usually bubbly girl.
"Need. No. But, I was hoping to talk to you if that's okay?" The sight of wide omega eyes and the hope behind them caused Robin to cave. The brunette gestured to the chair across from her and started clearing some of her papers from the table.
As Chrissy sat down she cleared her throat, "I know we haven't spoken much, outside of English Lit but, I would like to get to know you. You seem nice and I want to be friends with nice people not.."
Robin picked up where Chrissy was getting at, "Twofaced backstabbers?"
Chrissy smiled a bit, "Yeah, something like that." She laughed lightly and looked Robin in the eye, "I want real friends and something tells me I can trust you. I think it's an omega instinct that I've been ignoring for too long."
Robin frowned a bit, "You shouldn't ignore your instincts, they're what keep you safe until you bond to an alpha. Isn't Jason Carver your alpha?"
Shifting in her seat Chrissy quietly admitted, "Not anymore, I don't think he ever really was."
"Oh." Robin didn't know how to respond to such an honest answer.
"Yeah, oh. It's one of those instincts I've been ignoring, he's not a good alpha at all. He's not my alpha and I finally told him that."
Robin whistled and leaned back in her chair, "Wowza, that's, good for you. I'm glad you realized that before bonding with him. You didn't bond with him yet did you? Oh shit, are you okay? I'm sorry, my mouth gets away from me and I say stupid shit." Sheepishly she added, "Sorry."
Chrissy laughed quietly and shook her head, "I'm fine, no we didn't bond. I always knew he wasn't the right one for me so it's not painful losing him."
Picking at her nails and biting her lip again, "I know it's social suicide but, I never felt like they were my friends anyway. That's why I finally approached you, I want a real friend." Taking a steadying breath, "Will you be my friend Robin Buckley?"
Robin looked at the girl in front of her in a new light. Not as a cheerleader, not as a prep or the Queen of Hawkins High but, as a regular person. "Sure, I'll be your friend Chrissy Cunningham."
They left the library as the sun was setting, having spent the better part of the evening getting to know each other and making plans to meet up after their respective practices the next day.
Robin turned towards a maroon BMW that was waiting off to the side of the main doors. "Hey, do you need a ride home? I'm sure Steve would be cool dropping you off also."
Chrissy paused and looked at the driver, "Is that Steve Harrington? You're getting a ride home from The Alpha King Steve?"
"Hey, he may have been a jerk wad in school but, he's an okay guy and gag me, my best friend. Do not tell him I said that."
As she finished defending him Steve got out of his car and yelled, "Let's go loser! I don't have all night to wait for you!" And he honked the horn twice for good measure.
Robin rolled her eyes and grabbed onto Chrissy's jacket sleeve, pulling her to the passenger door and shoving her in. Sliding in the front passenger seat Robin gave him a light punch to the arm and said, "You're taking Chrissy home too Dingus, since you decided to make an ass of yourself."
Steve gave his assent, apologized to Chrissy and immediately started a rapid-fire questioning as to why Robin was so late getting out of the library. Chrissy quietly rode in the back, giving directions as needed and watching the verbal sparring with amusement. They argued like siblings she realized, they didn't look at each beyond friendship and she realized that they truly were best friends.
Steve was nothing like she remembered, all posturing and flirting. He seemed nice, funny and genuinely interested in her as he asked questions about what she had been up to, how cheer was going. Not once did he ask about Jason, and it made her feel good to be thought of as her own person and not an extension of an Alpha. Chrissy smiled to herself, happy with the choice she made in approaching Robin. It seems that she got two new friends today.
Steve dropped her off and made sure she had his and Robin's home phone numbers and the number to Family Video should she need to reach either of them. Chrissy thanked him and promised that they hadn't seen the last of her before walking into her house. And into the death glare of her mother.
"Where have you been?" Laura moved into her daughter's personal space and blocked her from leaving the foyer, "Jason called hours ago and said you ended things with him. In front of everyone at school. Now I know that can't be true seeing as he's your chosen mate."
Quietly Chrissy said, "No, he's your choice. He was never my choice as a mate and I'm tired of ignoring my instincts. He's not right for me."
Laura smacked her daughter once, then twice as her face twisted with rage. She pulled Chrissy by the arm into the kitchen and shoved her into a chair, slamming the rotary phone down in front of her. "You will call Jason right now and you will beg him to take you back."
"No." Another slap and Chrissy's eyes began to tear up. "I won't do it!" She jumped to her feet and rushed out of the room, up the stairs and into her bedroom, slamming the door shut. Crying as she fell into bed Chrissy told herself to stay strong, this was only the beginning, she would survive. She repeated this mantra as she fell asleep.
Boy howdy does it feel good to write again. I do have more planned, a whole outline in my head but, this is not prewritten before posting. I'm winging it and I hope some of you stick around for the ride. Love.
