"Oh, look who's back from her date with Wasabi!" Gogo slyly commented as Sara reentered the apartment, a blush coating her face.
"S-shut up." The wavy-haired blonde speedwalked to the couch she was sleeping on. "I'm surprised you're not locking lips with your honey right now."
Honey Lemon gave a very embarrassed yelp, the Mayoi in her arms not registering the fuss and continued to bat her for affection. "It was one time!" She buried her face into her palms.
"Mayoi!" Andre obliviously commented.
"Well it's better seeing you mope like a sad puppy all day!" Gogo huffed at Sara, her face red as a pepper.
Sara slyly smirked. "Ah, I remember someone was sad when their honey, or should I say honey bunny was gone while home sick."
"Oh my god I said 'I miss you' in the stupid group chat one time… ONE TIME!"
"You didn't deny itttt."
"Sara!"
Outside of the apartment by one of the roofs, a snow-cloaked figure lowered their binoculars. "Huh, I guess there's trouble in paradise for Big Hero 6." Kat snickered.
The buzzing of their made them swore aloud, they forgot they were on a call with someone. "Whoops! Didn't mean to leave you on hold that long!"
A groan came from the other side. "Kat, it is almost freaking eleven, stop watching the superhero's shenanigans and go get some sleep!" The voice on the other line was their adopted sister Bea, who was a much better programmer and hacker than they could be, and helped them with their missions.
"In a sec." Their green eyes glimmered down the road. "I wanna check on Elizabeth."
"Uhhhhg."
As Kat slowly made their way towards the Ferns, their sister continued to chat with them. "So, did you get involved with the whole Di thing?" Bea chirped. "Please tell me you punched her in the face."
"Wish I did, but I only stepped in to give Big Hero 6 some time to recover." They answered.
"Aww. I was hoping you'd be able to throw hands, that lady brings shame to biotech majors!" Bea huffed. "And blondes!"
They snorted at that. "Well she's not the evil blonde we have to worry about now, did you find anything about-?"
"Nope! Haven't seen any signs of Voltrax anywhere, whatever hole she crawled in after that incident with the shadow monsters, she's been staying there." Bea reported. "But I have been getting signs of unnatural electrokinesis, which worries me…"
"You don't have to worry about that, apparently our resident crime-dancers accidentally acquired superpowers." Even if they couldn't handle Voltrax thanks to the presence of the hooded guy she was working with, they did watch that whole fight up on the skyscraper.
Bea gasped at that. "Is that why Voltrax targeted them?!"
"Dunno, but I am kind of worried about the fact that they both have powers like hers now." Last thing they needed were more enemies that could fry them.
"Don't talk about them like that!" Bea snapped. "You and I know that we shouldn't judge people for circumstances outside of their control."
A twinge of guilt went through their chest. "I didn't mean that they were as bad as her, but High Voltage did do some bad stuff in the past."
"I might be biased, but property damage and thievery are small potatoes compared to what Indigo and Voltrax cause." Their sister argued.
"You do have a point." Kat noted.
They could practically hear Bea smirking on the other end. "I'm always right!"
"Keep telling yourself that." Little sisters could be the worst sometimes. "And this is why you're not in San Fransokyo."
"Hey!" Bea cried in offense. "I'm still busy with my classes and you said I can't come until we have a plan for their first base! I bet you don't have this attitude with your girlfriend!"
"Celine isn't my girlfriend!" Thank goodness that they had a mask on to hide their blush, not that it would stop their sister's teasing.
"Sure, and she's just keeping an eye out for Galaxian Pirates in New York because she can." Bea hummed.
Since their base in New York had been ransacked by the police, they had gone off the grid, but Voltrax's stunt in San Fransokyo was proof that they had set up shop here now. I just hope no one else gets killed this time… Last encounter Kat had with the pirates had been a disaster.
At least this time, they weren't alone. "But I'll ask Celine if she can help us over here once she's done her shows in New York." When she wasn't helping Kat keeping an eye on the Galaxian Pirates, she did shows as an acrobat.
"Don't you mean heists?" Okay maybe she was also a thief but those skills were helpful, and very impressive if Kat had to say so…
Not that they'd say that aloud to Bea. "I'll call you back when I'm back at my apartment." They were in eyesight of the Ferns house, and the last thing Kat needed was to get caught by one of the family members that weren't Elizabeth.
"You better get some sleep after that!" She told them.
"Fine Mom." Kat sarcastically replied, then ended the call. "Now to see what Elizabeth's been up to…"
"I question why we're having this discussion." Momakase deadpanned, she just wanted to spend her night in peace. But apparently Barb wanted to talk to her about something.
Said older blonde looked just as tired. "Because this is important."
"Considering you don't like staying up late, I'll take your word on it." The chef/mercenary nodded. "What exactly do you want to speak to me about?"
Barb shot a wary glance back at the house before she spoke. "Do you still have your claws?"
"My what?" It caught Momakase off guard.
"Juni and I still have some… side effects from Sycorax." Barb thought it'd be better to show her than tell her, so she channeled blue sparks around her hands.
The chef/mercenary stared for a few minutes. "I have several questions."
"You don't have any side effects like this?" Barb questioned.
"Unless my teeth count, but that's strange, didn't the hospital staff surgically remove your chips?" Her chip had been removed, the only sign of it being there was the surgical scar on her neck.
Barb nodded. "They did, but there was that nurse who tried to kidnap me and my kid…" Did she have something to do with that and not the lingering side effects of Sycorax?
"I wouldn't wear yourself out by thinking about how you still have your powers." Momakase attempted to change the subject. "Do the rest of your friends know?"
"Steven and Sally do, but I'm not sure if they told their kids or they think I'll tell them eventually." Not that Barb was going to tell them anyways, she had no plans on using her electrical powers while staying in the Ferns household.
"Well, hopefully those Galaxian Pirate brutes don't bother you or Juniper anymore." Last thing they needed was a supervillain crashing the front lawn.
Above the roof, Kat nearly tripped over the tiles. Who told Elizabeth about the Galaxian Pirates?! Was it one of High Voltage? How much about the pirates did they know?!
"I can't believe they're in San Fransokyo." Barb sighed. "Sally freaked out when I told her who that nurse was."
Momakase raised an eyebrow. "From what your daughter got from the small Rosemary kid, they do sound like trouble."
Not surprised Rachel would warn her friends about them… The snow-cloaked hero sighed. Poor kid, she must be terrified that those monsters are back.
It was going to be different this time, they were going to make sure of it. As long as I'm around, they're not going to hurt another Rosemary.
"Tell me about it." Barb sighed. "If it wasn't for Big Hero 6, who knows what they would've done to me and Juni?"
"At least we can give them a nice little call if they ever show up." Momakase hummed. It would be amusing interacting with the heroes outside of their battles. "Or perhaps that Kat fellow."
There was a frown on the older blonde's face at the mention of them. "That scoundrel who roughhoused Ariel and frighted Juni?"
Clearly Barb still held somewhat of a grudge for Kat's actions during the end of the monster crisis, even if it had ended with Ari being free of her mutation in the end.
"Are you still angry they ruined that sweet little moment your daughter had with her friend?" Momakase raised an eyebrow. "They did warn me about the pirates in their own strange way."
"They did?" Barb questioned.
"Kat said that you-know-who's actions could make their plans easier for them, if their plans are taking over the city." Like every other supervillain that terrorized the city, but considering the chaos one of their members had caused, Momakase was dreading their arrival. "If they touch a single hair on my son's head, I will end up breaking the law over it."
"Ditto." Barb nodded. "They're not going to hurt any of our kids."
That was one thing they could agree on. "Well if they're smart, they won't try anything."
"And that's all I wanted to talk to you about." Barb rubbed her eyes, exhaustion getting to her. "Tomorrow is going to be a very interesting day."
Life in the Ferns household was never dull after-all. "Your friends are picking up that support animal for Juniper, correct?"
"Mhmm, she's going to love them." The older blonde had a small smile on her face. "Don't stay up too late." Then she went back outside the house, leaving Momakase by herself on the porch.
"Well if those pirates have the spines to try and trespass, they'd regret it." It had been awhile since Momakase practiced her blades on something other than preparing food.
"Sadly they do, otherwise they'd look like boneless humans!" Her eyes widened as she noticed Kat on top of the roof. "Sup Elizabeth."
"How do you know my first name?!" Was the first thing that came to her mind.
"I hacked the SFPD villain database!"
She regretted asking that. "You what?"
Kat dropped off the fence. "Well my sister did!" They strolled over to the porch, taking a seat on the wooden rails. "So, nice to hear you got adopted."
Momakase rolled her eyes. "They did not 'adopt me,' they offered a place for me to stay, so I agreed."
They slyly grinned. "Pretty sure that's adoption Elizabeth!"
"Stop calling me by my first name." She instinctively gestured claws with her fingers, but quickly placed them down.
The snow-cloaked person didn't comment on that thankfully. "Fine, Mrs. Momakase. Wait you're not married so it would be Ms? People who go by surnames are weird, just look at Alistair!"
"I am appalled you even compared a sliver of me to that buffoon." Momakase sneered. "You're lucky I'm in a better mood than our last casual chat or I'd be alerting everyone else in this household."
"Yeah please don't." Kat warily eyed her. There are some people who'd like to have my head. So thanks for not contributing to that."
"Oh?" She raised an eyebrow. "Who in particular is out for your head?"
Kat shrugged "The Galaxian Pirates."
She wasn't surprised. "And what did you do to invoke their ire?"
"Lots of things! It's pretty easy to anger them." Kat casually gestured. "Heard a little bit of what you and Barbara were talking about."
Of course they eavesdropped. "Do you know why they tried abducting her and her daughter?"
"I can think of a lot of reasons, and none of them are pretty." Their gaze darkened. "But methinks they're not the only villains in San Fransokyo they'll try to recruit."
That was ominous to think about, especially as there were some villains that should not be released just to help them in their plans. "And you're telling me this why?"
"Well thought I should warn you that they're not going away until they get what they want, or die trying." Kat gestured. "Just making sure you're not going to help them, I mean you're cool and all, but they can be pretty persuasive."
"I'm offended you think I'll help those buffoons." Momakase frowned. She was done helping other villains anyways. "I may be a criminal, but I have standards."
Kat seemed to smile behind their mask. "And that's the best kind of criminal!" They gestured with a thumbs up. "So which of your new family is your-"
ZAP!
A blue bolt brushed past the rails Kat was sitting on, they yelped and backflipped on instinct. "You!" Momakase turned to see it was an angry Barb glaring at the snow-cloaked hero with a fury only a mother could understand. "How dare you come a foot near my house!"
"This technically isn't your house-YOW!" Another bolt struck their backside and Kat jumped back onto the fence and hopped onto a nearby roof to escape a third bolt.
"My, my Barbara." Momakase commented. "I thought you were going to sleep."
She groaned. "I was, but I had to get a drink of water and saw them loitering." Then Barb sent her a glare. "Why are you friends with them?"
"I wouldn't call us friends, but they are interesting to talk to." She clarified.
As the two went inside the house, Kat watched in the distance, rubbing their now sore backside.
"Rude…" They huffed. So they didn't believe in the power of friendship one time! "Well, at least I know the Ferns are gonna be okay from any more recruiters."
Now they just hoped the rest of the rogues gallery in San Fransokyo were smart enough to not get involved with the Galaxian Pirates.
For once you entered their group, the only way out was death.
An: and now for a little something different, aka Kat being a little nosy vigilante XD
And a glimpse of their sister Bea! I love Bea, but Bea probably doesn't love me because her backstory has some sad moments, but I love writing her and Kat's relationship, they tease each other a lot
Enjoy next week's chapter! If you've seen my tumblr, you've probably noticed a certain animal I've drawn, and they shall be making their debut next time
