Author's note: I am trying to find energy to write but that has been hard lately. I have been so incredibly sick. The infection that set up residence in my leg will not go away until the metal is removed. That means I have been on antibiotics for weeks. I have a port in my chest to allow IV antibiotics but they are making me increasingly sick. I dropped 10 to 15 lbs in 5 weeks. So, if you see an update, just know it didn't come easily. Thank you for reviews, they make my dark days brighter.
(Friday, November 29)
Marie's house was calmer the morning after the 'incident'.
Lee was somewhat understanding although he still had questions.
Dean talked to John and raised his concerns about Lee being trustworthy. He was a good person but knowing about the kids was volatile information.
Kate got her orders and blocked Lee's memory. He wouldn't remember anything about the kids' powers unless he and Krissy were in danger. It was a delicate process that Kate wasn't sure would work. He needed to know enough to know to call them if there was a sticky situation. However, he didn't need to have all of that information weighing on him. She erased Krissy's memory too. That one was easier.
Andy was quiet. He still felt bad about putting everyone in danger. His pride was wounded and he stayed to himself.
John spoke to Rod before telling Andy to get his boots on.
Andy was worried. "Why?"
"We are going for a walk." John said.
Andy's eyes grew wide. He quickly put on a jacket and his boots though. He followed John down the steps. "Where are we going?"
John opened a gate and let Andy walk through it. "We are going to talk." He saw Andy's shoulders drop. "Man to man."
Andy perked up. "I'm not in more trouble?"
"No." John said. He didn't think about how Andy would take his words. "I want to know where you are at, in your head."
Andy thought about it. "I'm sad."
John nodded. "Why?"
Andy furrowed his eyebrows. "I messed up."
John crushed a piece of ice with his boot. "You did. You learned from it, right?"
Andy quickly nodded. "I did. I learned my lesson."
John dug deep for the words he needed. "I did stupid stuff when I was a kid."
Andy tilted his head. "You did?"
"I did. Things were different back then. When I was a kid, I had to worry about not getting into fights or being disrespectful. I don't think I was ever faced with a life or death situation. You have a lot on your shoulders. You are the oldest. You remember when your home wasn't safe. Ian had abilities and you got yours taken away."
Andy blinked as ice formed on his eyelashes. "I'm glad we are safe now. I think sometimes I get sad that I can't do stuff anymore."
John could understand that. "We want to find a way to get rid of Ian's abilities. The abilities are useful and probably fun. They cause a lot of trouble and you both deserve to have a normal childhood."
Andy picked up a stick to drag it through the snow. "Do you really think my mom and Lauren are okay?"
"Yes. Your dad said she was healthy and Kate gave her a boost." John said.
Andy sighed. "I think having a new baby will be hard."
"It will be in some ways. It is an adjustment. Dean struggled with Sam at first. He was happy but got jealous."
"I know Ian is little. I don't think I will be jealous of Lauren." Andy said.
"No, you might not be. Dean was four when Sam was born." John said. "You are eight. Attention will be on Lauren for a while. You can hang out at Bobby's house when you feel left out."
Andy paused. "I keep getting into trouble when I do that."
"Not all the time. You are learning." John said. He was fatigued from the conversation but Andy needed to talk to someone.
"You said my dad was like your kid." Andy said.
"I did. He started running with my boys when they were teenagers. I treated him like one of them. He may have something to say about that. I wasn't good about the emotional stuff. I think I've gotten better at that. I was strict on them." John admitted.
Andy pulled a face. "You are strict now."
John smiled. "Not as strict. I have expectations but had Dean done something like that at your age, I wouldn't have just threatened to use my belt. It was just the boys and me. I needed them to follow orders without question."
"I heard stories." Andy said, quietly.
"I don't regret having them follow orders like that. I may regret a time or two that I cracked down harder than I needed to. I do regret not letting them be kids." John said.
Andy hopped a few times to leave footprints in the snow. "My dad tells me to be a kid all the time."
"He grew up a certain way and wants your childhood to be better." John said. He found the sign that Rod told him to turn at.
Andy could hear water. "What is over here?"
"A vantage point." John said. He let Andy run ahead a bit.
Andy found a railing that blocked him from going down an embankment. There was a small waterfall and a spring. Most of the water was frozen but some of it was still trickling. He stood on the railing and looked at the valley below. Everything was white. He saw some small footprints and asked John what made them.
John got a look at them. "A rabbit." He pointed out the small front footprints and the larger back footprints.
Andy liked spending time with John when he wasn't in hot water. "I want to learn to track."
John nodded. "We can show you. I talked to your dad about something."
Andy looked worried.
"I'm not always around but Bobby or Dean usually are. You'll get one day a week to do an activity with one of us. Your job will be to help decide on the activity, tracking, going to pick up gear and stuff like that. Your other job will be to say what is on your mind. We do not want another incident like yesterday." John said.
Andy was excited. "Really?"
"Yes." John confirmed.
Andy grinned. He had a whole list of things he wanted to do. He could maybe talk them into letting him shoot a gun. Maybe not but he'd ask.
(April and Caleb)
April felt good for having just had a baby. Kate was to thank for that. She was up on her feet and getting used to the loss of weight from Lauren being on the outside. She was enamored with her daughter and loved seeing Caleb just as smitten. She didn't get that with the boys. "I can feed her."
Caleb looked up at her. He had been told to do skin to skin contact to help Lauren acclimate. "She isn't hungry."
"She will be." April said.
Caleb relinquished the small bundle to April. He didn't know if he would be able to share her with the family. He just wanted to sit and hold her for hours.
April didn't want to jinx it but Lauren was calm. Aside from the tube incident, she had been content. She was brand new though. She couldn't remember the first few days with Ian. She remembered Steven being angry and hitting her. Caleb was the opposite. "I'm hungry."
Caleb bailed out of his chair to get some food. "What do you want?"
"A burger." April said.
Karen took Caleb's seat when he left. "That is a proud father if I've ever seen one."
April smiled. "It is nice."
Karen was happy to be included. "I can't wait until she is home."
April couldn't wait either. The doctor was cautious due to how early she was but she looked great. She lost a few ounces, bringing her down from the previous 5 lbs. That was normal and she would be released once she gained the weight back. April wasn't concerned about that with how often Lauren wanted to be fed.
Caleb stepped outside and took in a breath of the cool air. That brought him back to reality. Inside the hospital room, they were in their own bubble. He checked on the boys and waited for Jody to pick him up.
Jody was eager to meet Lauren. She grinned as she pulled up beside Caleb. "Where is your truck?"
Caleb sighed. "We had to get here in a hurry so Kate dropped us off."
"I'm so happy she was able to do that. How is Lauren?" Jody said.
"She is perfect." Caleb beamed. "Kate gave her a boost so she will get out of here soon." He showed Jody the photo that Kate gave him.
Jody's heart melted. "She is precious."
Caleb stared at the photo. "I have a daughter."
Jody nodded. "Does it still feel like a dream?"
Caleb rubbed the back of his head. "I guess so. Everything happened so fast. I see the boys as my own but she shares DNA with me. That doesn't make a difference. I just…"
"Can't believe you helped create something so perfect?" Jody said with a smile.
"Exactly." Caleb said. He wanted everyone to meet Lauren but he also wanted to keep her to himself for a while longer. He got out of the car when they reached the diner. He ordered food and took in his surroundings. It all felt like a dream. One moment, he was waking up to Dean hovering over him. He was surprised to wake up. He should have died. Then he met April and immediately fell in love with her. He adopted the boys and now he had a little girl. His life was great. He wanted his own parents to see how he turned out. He wanted to brag about his little family. They were gone though. He would get to share everything with all of John's crew, Bobby and Karen, and Marie and Rod. The kids would grow up with a variety of aunts, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers. It didn't matter if they were blood related.
(Marie's house)
Kate was glad to visit with everyone. She had fun talking to Charlie and Jo. She was distracted though. She had something on her mind that she couldn't understand. It was like it was only visible when she wasn't looking at it. She'd stop thinking about it and something would trigger her attention again. She did tell Dean about it but he couldn't do anything unless she had a trail to follow.
Jess didn't want to go back to Stanford. She wanted to stay and visit for a few more days. Sadly, though, they'd have to head back. They'd do that the next day though. She was able to relax and forget about California for a while.
Sam got caught up with Dean. He missed his brother. They grew up together and being so far away kind of sucked. He missed the rest of them too but he was closest to Dean.
Dean asked Sam what his plans were.
Sam pulled him to the side. "After this year, we are thinking about moving to South Dakota."
Dean's eyes widened. "Are you giving up on school?"
"No. I called around. There is a college with a law program not too far away. Over the summer, I can do an internship with a firm that I have been in contact with. If all goes to plan, I can continue my education there." Sam said.
Dean held back his excitement. "What made you think of that?"
"Family." Sam said. "Jess hates it out there. Stanford is expensive and a law degree is a law degree. If I am looking for a job, it will be out this way. I'm not trying to get into the top law firm in the states."
Dean was already planning how he was going to help them pack. "When will you know for sure?"
Sam shrugged. "I've done my research and talked to the admissions office over there. I will work at that law firm for a few weeks and then make my decision."
"What will Jess do?" Dean asked.
"She will pick up her degree if we move." Sam said.
Dean watched Jess with Jacob. "She might drop out and make you start a family."
Sam smiled. "She can do what she wants. We aren't ready for kids yet, though."
Dean raised an eyebrow and motioned toward Jess. "You might not be."
Sam blushed. "He gets to go home to his dad. We aren't trying to figure out childcare and stuff.
Dean clapped him on the back. "Yet."
Charlie walked briskly by Dean and Sam.
Dean stepped back. "Where is the fire?"
Charlie spun around. "Huh? No fire. Just getting something." She returned a few minutes later with a folder. She wanted to share all of her research because she just knew the Stine family was hinky.
John was overseeing the transfer of information. Jo and Kate alone could spin out of control easily. "How did you find this?"
Charlie chewed her lip. "By completely legal ways."
John snorted. "Which means I don't want to know."
Charlie stacked papers according to each topic. "Creepy people."
Kate scanned the papers. "I agree."
"Just because you think they are creepy does not mean that you can dig through their history." John said. "You might be going off the beaten path for this."
Charlie eyed him. "I know in my heart that I'm onto something."
Kate squinted her eyes. Something was familiar. "You could always be the one to go check them out."
John lightly smacked her head. "No one is going to. I'll see what I can do about finding some of their records."
Charlie pulled a stapled stack of papers from under the folder. "What kind of records?"
John blew air through his nose. "Those had better not be bank statements."
Charlie slowly put the papers into her lap.
John held his hand out. "Let me see them."
Charlie slowly scooted them back onto the table and over to John.
"They've got money." John said. "I'll halt you here. This," he said as he flicked the papers. "Is how you wind up alerting someone that you are onto them."
"I used proxies." Charlie said.
John studied her. "If they are involved in supernatural things, do you think they'd have ways around that?"
Charlie's eyes drifted. "No more financial statements, got it."
Kate took the statements from John and studied them. "They move around a lot of money too."
Charlie tentatively scooted over to Kate and brought her attention to specific transactions. She tapped the page. "That is a medical billing company."
John saw a spiral coming. "Thank you for finding this. I will review it."
Kate frowned. "But it's a lead."
"It starts with a lead and then you wind up drowning. Charlie, pull back on this. You may be onto something but safety is important." John said.
Charlie sighed. "Okay."
"The three of you," John motioned between Kate, Charlie and Jo "Need to stray away from hunting. Hunting covers hunting creatures AND research involving creatures."
Jo acted offended. "I haven't even said anything."
"You were thinking it. All of you kids are smart. You are too brave for your own good and it is impossible to keep track of all of you if you are diving into this stuff headfirst." John replied.
Dean scoffed and dropped his arms. "Oh, they get compliments with their 'lecture'. All I ever got was a threat on my life."
John snorted.
"He didn't want to hurt your feelings." Kate said.
Dean leaned over the couch and flicked her ear. "Brat."
John placed all of the papers back into the folder. "I'm assuming the lecture will be enough, right?"
Charlie gasped.
"Don't worry. He's talking to me and Jo." Kate said with an eyeroll.
John looked at Charlie. "Forget about this line of research for now. We need to do a few things before we wind up on someone's radar."
Jess brought Jacob to Kate. "He doesn't feel good. Can you fix him?"
Kate rested a hand on Jacob's chest. She frowned. "His ear is hurting and he's got a fever."
Jess paled.
"It's okay. I can help him." Kate said.
Jess saw Jacob's face relax and smiled. "Thank you."
Sam had called Tony to see when he wanted Jacob back. Tony was overwhelmed and still going through stuff. He stepped back into the main room and let Jess know it would be a few more days.
"If you two need to go back to school, he can stay here." Marie said.
Jess looked uncomfortable.
"I could also go with you for a few days to babysit while you go to classes." Marie said with a smile.
Sam got a little worried about how attached Jess was to Jacob. She was naturally good with him. Martha hadn't taught her any of that.
Friday was calm. It was a day to catch up and say goodbyes before people split up.
Jo groaned. "I don't want to go back yet."
Taylor smirked. "I bet Noah is ready for you to come back."
Jo jumped up and took off after Taylor.
Taylor laughed but ran from her.
Sam winced when he heard Jo's hand connect with Taylor's back. "Can't say he didn't earn that one."
Jo walked back into the living room. "Kate, I don't know how you live with him."
Kate flicked her eyes to Dean. "There are two of him."
Krissy found Charlie and sat down beside her. "Her hair is stuck." She said in reference to a doll.
Charlie carefully picked the elastics out of the doll's hair. She braided it and handed it back to Krissy.
Krissy didn't leave her side right away. She saw Charlie sitting one way and copied her.
Lee was amused. He didn't realize how close she had gotten to Charlie. He was okay with that. Charlie was calm.
John had left the girls alone for all of five minutes. He took a deep breath as Kate approached him.
"Do you know how many people are injured due to driving in icy conditions?" Kate asked.
John sipped his coffee. "More than a few."
"Exactly. Driving also takes up gas and that stuff is expensive. Jo will have to leave early tomorrow in order to get back to the Roadhouse. Conditions are worse when it is dark. Dean is experienced but do we really want to risk that?" Kate asked.
John smirked. "What is this about?"
"If I zap her back to the Roadhouse, she will avoid a potential car crash and she will be able to visit with us a while longer." Kate said.
"Ask Ellen." John said.
Kate squealed and ran back to Jo.
John rubbed his face. She would be the death of him.
(Saturday, Nov 30)
Caleb jumped up and was immediately alarmed. He saw a woman standing over Lauren.
The nurse gave him a smile. "I'm sorry I woke you. I'm just checking her vitals."
Caleb walked over to the plastic bassinet. "How does she look?"
The nursed lifted Lauren to check her over. "Her lungs sound good. All of her vitals are good." She showed Caleb how to swaddle Lauren with a blanket. "This helps them sleep. Those newborn reflexes can startle them."
Caleb took Lauren from the nurse and cradled her. "Baby burrito."
The nurse smiled. "That is what we call them too."
Lauren opened her eyes and let them drift, unable to see beyond a few inches.
Caleb walked around the room until Lauren went back to sleep. He thought about putting her back into the bassinet but the nurse startled him. He sat down in his chair and propped his feet on April's bed. He wanted the boys to meet her. He just hoped they didn't smother her.
(Marie's house)
No one really wanted to go home. The gathering was healing for everyone.
Jo groaned and let Kate know she needed to head back.
John reminded Kate to get her there and get back as soon as possible.
"I could do a world trip before you blinked." Kate said.
John eyed her.
Kate grinned sheepishly. "I won't, though."
Taylor watched his breath swirl through the cold air. He and Sam were out on the porch just chatting. Usually, Kate or Dean were in the mix. Taylor hadn't gotten to know Sam like he had gotten to know the others.
Dean got roped into going with Andy to feed scraps to the goats. He lifted Andy so he could reach over the fence and lowered him down when he was done. As they were walking back to the house, they had to pass under a set of trees. He heard an impact and grabbed Andy as snow fell from the branches, coating them from head to toe.
Sam laughed and shoved Taylor. "Run, dude, run."
Taylor slipped around the side of the house. The ball he had thrown had hit the tree exactly where he had planned for it too. Maybe there was more snow than he had meant to dump on them but they were fine. He wouldn't be fine but they were.
Dean brushed Andy off and walked up to the house. "Where is he?"
Sam acted confused. "What happened?"
Dean narrowed his eyes. "Where is Taylor?"
Sam shrugged. "Inside maybe."
Dean approached Sam and cleared his throat. "Do you want to go down with him?"
Sam laughed. "You've got a bit of snow right there." He flicked Dean's ear and stepped back when Dean tried to hit him.
Dean motioned to Andy. "He could have died."
Sam cracked up. "It was just a shower of snow. He didn't bury you."
Dean raised an eyebrow. "So, I was right!"
Sam cringed. He had been away from his siblings just long enough to forget how not to sell someone out.
John assumed Taylor had done something to one of the older boys just by the way he snuck into the house. He was just waiting for Dean or Sam to figure out where he went.
Andy ran through the backdoor and took off his jacket. His nose was red and he was shivering.
Dean gave him a subtle head nod.
Andy rubbed his arms and found John. "Taylor made a tree dump snow on me."
John raised both eyebrows. "He did?"
Andy nodded. "I almost got really hurt."
John smirked and whistled loudly. "Taylor."
Taylor groaned and showed up at the top of the stairs. "Yes, sir?"
"Did you dump snow on Andy?" John asked.
Taylor's mouth opened and then shut. He looked at his socked feet and then to Dean. Dean wouldn't run through the house with boots on. Taylor could make it to the front door before he caught him. "I didn't dump snow, a tree so happened to shake as they were walking under it."
John snorted when Taylor slid down the railing and darted through the front door. He had taken on the job of tormenting Dean and John found it funny.
Dean cracked his knuckles. "Are you partial to him?"
Marie lightly smacked his arm. "We are."
Dean held up both hands to appease her. "I'm just going to knock him down a few pegs."
Marie smiled and lifted Ian into her arms. "Good luck."
While Sam was on the porch, he got a phone call. He wasn't expecting it and was caught off guard when he answered. The phone call lasted five minutes but weighed heavily on him. He needed to talk to Jess. He needed to talk to someone that was unbiased. He opened the door. "Hey, dad, can you come out here?"
John slipped his shoes on. "If it is to tell your brother not to harm Taylor, I'm not going to do it."
Sam snorted. "No, it is something else."
John stepped outside. He could see that Sam was struggling with something.
Sam sighed and sat down. "Tony called me."
John sat down across from him. "What about?"
Sam rubbed his hands together to warm them. "Jacob. Tony and his wife didn't really have any family. With his wife gone, Tony is trying to wrap up some stuff and he wants things in writing. He asked me if he could use Jess and I on Jacob's paperwork."
John rocked slightly in his chair. "What kind of paperwork?"
"You know…. If something happens to him. We would be written in as next of kin." Sam said.
John felt his heart drop into his stomach. "That is a big request."
Sam nodded. "That could just mean that we'd get a call if Tony had an accident and needed a few days of care."
"That could also mean you could be stuck with a baby." John said.
Sam shifted. "Jess will say yes, without thinking."
"Don't agree to something that you aren't ready for." John said.
Sam took a minute. "Who else can he ask?"
John took a deep breath. "I don't know. You do not have to feel obligated to help someone like that."
"I do feel obligated. He's so little." Sam said.
John heard Andy's giggle through the trees and assumed they had caught up to Taylor. He shook his head. "Caleb took on Andy and Ian. None of that was easy."
"This is different though." Sam said.
"It is. What is your gut telling you?" John asked.
"Sign the papers." Sam said.
John nodded. "You didn't need me to okay it."
Sam looked out over the snowy yard. "I thought you'd talk me out of it."
John smirked. "When have I ever talked you out of anything?"
Sam smiled a little. "I got so sick of you bossing me around when I was younger. Now look at me."
"I appreciate that you value my opinion. If you sign those papers, you may just be a name on a slip of paper. If it makes Tony feel better to have a backup plan, I can understand that. I know that Jess would throw school away to stay home with him but you two need to talk. You need a solid plan. He may never need you but you have to assume he will. If you get that call six months from now, how are you going to handle it. What about a year from now?" John asked.
"I mean, if they stay on our side of the states, we can pick Jacob up pretty fast." Sam said.
John nodded. "What about your classes? What happens if you are knee deep in final exams and get that call?"
Sam thought long and hard about it. "I don't know."
John tilted his head toward the house. "You have a house full of people to fall back on."
Sam looked into John's eyes. "Yeah, but if we decide to sign papers, that is our responsibility."
"A hard pill I had to swallow a long time ago was that I can't do everything without help. I rely on Dean and Bobby a lot. Maybe I shouldn't rely on them as much but every adult in that house would drop what they are doing to help you out." John said.
Sam heard Jacob cry and looked down at his feet. "Jess wouldn't want to let anyone else have him."
"No, but if you did get that call at a bad time, someone could drive down or fly over to help you until you can handle it." John said.
"I don't think I'm ready for a baby." Sam said, honestly.
"I don't think you are either. I think you are mature and responsible but you are in school. I don't think Tony is asking you to take him right now. You should talk that over with him. If you do not want to or feel as though you cannot take on that much responsibility, I know a few people that would take over." John said, gently.
"We are going to have to double check his car seat to make sure that Karen and Marie haven't stolen him before we head back." Sam said, smiling slightly.
"I will let you make your own decisions. I'm not going to talk you out of it." John said as he stood up.
Sam rocked back in his chair and looked up at John. "Kate said you were wanting grandbabies."
John rubbed his face. "Kate says a lot."
When Kate returned to the house, she chatted with Charlie. She downed a mug of hot chocolate and held her feet next to the heater in Charlie's room. She heard commotion and opened Charlie's door.
Taylor ran up the stairs. "He dumped water on me!"
Dean laughed. "You'll be okay."
Andy's grin faded away as he made eye contact with John. He pointed to Dean. "I didn't do anything."
John put a hand on his head. "You are fine." He popped Dean on the head as he walked by. "Maybe don't do stuff that proves he has abilities."
Dean scoffed. "No one can tell he is totally fine. He just looks like a wet rat."
John shook his head. Dean was mature as well. John made him grow up too fast so he enjoyed seeing him rough house and mess with Taylor. With how much weight he had on his back, he deserved a chance to be dumb.
Dean found Kate and tilted his head to tell her that he wanted to talk.
Kate followed him out of Charlie's room and down the hall to his room.
Dean sat down and pulled Kate to stand in front of him. "Do you want me to go ahead and bust your butt now or when we get home?"
Kate gasped. "What did I do?"
Dean raised an eyebrow. "Nothing yet."
Kate crossed her arms.
"You have a habit of spiraling after stuff like this." Dean said. "Remember when we drove Jo back and you lost your head?"
Kate frowned.
Dean let her sit on one of his legs and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm giving you a hard time but you do spiral. I want to know what is on your mind beforehand."
Kate scrunched her nose. "I'm not telling you anything now."
"Hey, I only offered. If you want to have an attitude, dad can handle you." Dean said, lightly.
Kate huffed. "I have things on my mind but I promise I won't spiral. You may just have to listen to me talk the entire drive back to Sioux Falls."
Dean smiled. "Talking is good. Just no sass."
Kate stood up and rolled her eyes dramatically. "That's like me telling you not to be a smartass." She jumped back and held her hands out to stop him. "It was just a comparison."
Dean grabbed her and ruffled her hair, thoroughly messing it up. "I'll keep that in mind when you run out of ice to skate around on."
Sam talked to Jess in their room and explained the situation. He was right about her saying yes. "Wait, we need a solid plan. We need to talk to other people."
Jess grabbed his hand. "We can figure it out. Jacob just isn't going into foster care."
"No. If we cannot take him, someone around here will." Sam said. He held a hand up to stop her. "I said if. If we are in a situation that is not safe for him, we do need a backup plan to the backup plan."
Jess sat Jacob up to burp him. "If we keep getting to babysit, he will get just as much love."
"I told dad that we would have to check his car seat when we leave. Karen or Marie might take him." Sam said.
Jess leaned forward to press her forehead against Sam's. "Miss Lauren may never touch the ground."
"Jacob barely has." Sam said. He had put him down on a blanket to let him work on holding his head up. "Talk about a bunch of spoiled kids."
"They are loved." Jess said.
Sam agreed. Andy and Ian were loved. Krissy was too. Every kid that entered their lives got to experience the embrace and the chaos of a large family. That was all he wanted when he was a kid. He wasn't bitter. He was happy for them. He was happy for himself and Jess.
(Caleb and April)
Lauren's doctor stopped by to check on her again. He remarked that her reflexes were strong and she would be able to leave soon. "You may have been a bit farther along than we thought you were."
April blushed. "The dates were right."
The doctor handed Lauren back to April. "You should be proud. She is perfect."
April didn't need him to tell her that. She knew.
Caleb didn't have his truck. He wondered if he would need to be zapped back to drive it back. No, he couldn't do that. He had to stay with Lauren and April. John, Bobby and Dean all had their own vehicles. He snapped his fingers and sent Sam a message.
April watched Caleb. He was wearing his thoughts on the outside. He was hard to read sometimes but not that day. "Don't worry."
Caleb sat down beside her. "We have to get the boys and the truck back."
April smiled. "They will bring them back."
"Sam could drive my truck." Caleb said. "Someone else could bring the boys back."
"We will figure it out." April said, pulling him toward her.
Kate showed up and peaked around the curtain, unsure if a nurse was around. "Do you, have it?"
Caleb tossed her a vial with blood.
Kate frowned deeply but placed it in a black bag and sealed it.
Caleb smiled. "You aren't allowed to even look at it?"
"No, I'm just the messenger." Kate said. She had been told to get Lauren's cord blood because of how April's blood had reacted to the freak serum. The procedure wouldn't hurt April or Lauren and was reasonably easy for Caleb to do.
Caleb gave her a small smile. "It is killing you, isn't it?"
Kate touched Lauren and then April to boost their healing again. "Every piece of me wants to run this at the lab."
Caleb sat back in his chair. "John is trusting you enough to pick up the blood and transport it. I would say that is a big step."
Kate sighed. "It is torture."
Caleb chuckled. "Just do as your told. What is that saying about messengers?"
"Don't shoot the messenger?" Kate asked. She scoffed. "Tell my dad that."
