Ahhh I was so excite dtoo write this chapter. Things are happening!
The Malfoys
Chapter 12
Sirius fidgeted behind his father's-his desk. He corrected himself. He was Lord Black now. He sat up straighter and waited for Astrid to escort the Malfoys in. They had decided that it was better if Remus and Harry waited until tea-time to meet the Malfoys. He didn't want to risk Lucius trying something idiotic. Though he knew the house provided protections to him and Harry he wasn't willing to risk it. A knock sounded on the door before Astrid strode in with Narcissa behind her, then Lucius then Draco.
A flicker of shock showcased on the adults' faces before they masked it with a polite smile. Draco on the other hand was another matter. He had been sure that the reason why they were coming today was to take back his 'birthright', but on seeing Sirius he was enraged.
"Father! What is this convict doing here! Surely he can't be the so-called Lord Black can he?" He sneered. Narcissa stiffened in fear. She knew enough of her cousin to know about his temper.
Lucius gripped Draco's shoulder with a stern hand before hissing at him to be quiet. Sirius merely raised an eyebrow before turning to Narcissa dismissing the younger Malfoy.
"Cousin." He said cooly.
"My Lord." Narcissa curtsied.
"Sit." He ordered and watched with concealed amusement as Draco had to be shepherded and literally wrangled into a seat. He surveyed the Malfoys, his eyes taking in their different stances. Narcissa with faked calmness, Lucius tense, and Draco angry.
"Let me first just say, so that there is no confusion. I am indeed Lord Black. The past thirteen years there was no Lord Black but Astrid did work in the name of the House of Black in various countries to restore us to our previous position. What I want to know, is why you haven't done the same?" Icy grey eyes turned on Narcissa.
"I thought my son would be Lord Black when he reaches the age of seventeen. Lucius stated that he wanted Draco to grow up a Malfoy, not a Black."
"A Malfoy? Over a Black?" Astrid interjected with revulsion clear in her tone.
"Astrid." Sirius stated in a warning tone before resuming the questioning.
"Did he? And why did you follow? You are a Black first and foremost, you hold primacy."
"Our house was destroyed. Grandfather became a recluse refusing to see anyone, and all the other Blacks had left the country. Who was I to go to?" Narcissa argued.
"They left the country. Not the world. Surely with your vast Black dowry and Slytherin cunningness, you could have asked for help, hell you could have challenged Lucius in Wizengamont. Why didn't you?" Sirius leaned forward as he questioned.
Narcissa bowed her head, swallowing the tears that still filled her eyes to this day at the thought of what had happened. She couldn't get emotional now. She needed to save her family.
Taking a deep breath she spoke. "I had a miscarriage. My fourth one. I had three before Draco was born and then after that last one, I just gave up. I didn't care anymore." She replied honestly, her eyes dead. For a second Draco was distracted from his own feelings of injustice. If there was one person he loved unconditionally it was his mother and he hated seeing her like this. He would never tell anyone but he too missed the sibling he never had. He often wondered if it would be a little boy. He didn't love that idea as much as he loved the thought of a younger sister who looked like his mother. But unfortunately, it would only always be a dream.
Sirius's eyes softened slightly. Out of all of his cousins, Cissy was the most family-oriented. She had always dreamed of falling in love and having many children.
"And what did you do through this Lucius? Did you take her to a healer? Try and find out why she had so many miscarriages?" Sirius's eyes now tuned onto the patriarch of the family.
"Yes." He replied, his hand tightening on his cane.
"It was said that her body wasn't able to handle it." He said succinctly. Sirius understood the hidden meaning in that. Inbreeding had ruined her chances of having a normal family.
Unseen by anyone, a blank look overtook Astrid's face. Her mind working a million miles an hour.
Sirius surveyed the blond blankly.
"Let me start with the official statements, then we shall move onto what we will do since you are in breach of your contract with the House of Black. First of all, if I do die untimely, my estate will not go to Draco. It will go to my heir, Harry James Potter-"
"What?" Draco screeched. "How can Potter be Lord Black? He is friends with filthy mudbloods and blood traitors." he spit out.
Almost immediately, all the knives and forks on the table zoomed up, staring at Draco threateningly. He squeaked and tried to move away but the instruments just moved forward.
"Sirius!" Narcissa called hysterically.
"Oh don't call his name dear cousin, Sirius had nothing to do with this." Astrid replied coldly.
"Astrid stop this right now." Narcissa commanded alarmed.
"Astrid please." Narcissa's voice became hysterical.
"What happened Cissy?" Astrid asked honestly curious.
Narcissa stiffened. "I don't know what you mean." She said coldly.
Astrid lowered her hand, the knives and forks falling down. Draco immediately began whimpering and whining.
"Be quiet." Astrid snapped at him. He immediately shut up, faced with the amethyst eyes turning on him sharply.
"You used to be a traditionalist, never a blood purist, yet here is your son, a blood purist with a vengeance."
Narcissa remained silent. Not wishing to say how the last miscarriage had finally broken her. That after that she had stopped caring about everything and anything except her Draco. Sensing this, Sirius finally intervened.
"Astrid, that's enough." He said quietly.
"As I was saying, Harry will inherit on my demise, and if that happens while he's underage, Astrid will be regent." All three looked on silently. Not wishing to engage.
"Coming to the breach of contract."
"What breach of contract?" Lucius interjected for the first time.
"The mark on your forearm. The House of Malfoy married into the House of Black. Your allegiance was, is, and should be first and foremost to the House of Black. And yet, you let yourself be marked by a maniacal sociopath." Sirius snapped.
"Do not deny it. Do not defend your so-called Lord." Sirius said, his eyes narrowed when he saw Lucius open his mouth. Lucius snapped his mouth shut.
"You let your son be raised with loyalty to another house when you know, you know, that first and foremost he is a child of the house of Black. You have shamed the house by spewing your horrible pureblood mania and associating the house with it. I don't care what my parents and relatives said. From now on The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black will not be blood purists. We will be traditionalists."
"And your most grievous offense ever, you gave a cursed diary to a child, a child, and let that diary go into Hogwarts where it set a Basilisk onto the kids. What if Draco would have been one of those kids? Had you thought of that?"
Narcissa and Draco turned white at his last statement. Apparently, neither of them had known about this.
"You have no proof." Lucius replied smoothly.
"I have my godson's word." Sirius snapped back.
"And he is telling the truth? " Lucius demanded.
"If your so insistent, let's put you under the family magic, see what that makes of you shall we?" Astrid asked sweetly.
Lucius paled considerably.
"Well, shall we?" Sirius asked quirking an eyebrow.
"No." Lucius replied shakily. A resounding slap sounded around the room. Draco looked at his mother in shock. Narcissa lowered her hand. Unbridled rage simmering under her skin. She couldn't believe it. She knew her husband wasn't a good man, but she had thought that he at least loved Draco. And now she found out that he had knowingly put him in danger.
"You have put not one, but two children of the house of Black in danger, who are consequently heirs to three of the Ancient and Noble Houses." Sirius continued.
He examined the blond patriarch with his stoic build and indifferent expression which drastically opposed his stiff shoulders and tight hold on his cane.
"I should put you under judgment for all of your crimes, I doubt even Narcissa would plead your case now."
The room fell quiet as Sirius glanced at Narcissa, but she gave no indication of interrupting him.
"But, I am not sure if you will be useful when Voldemort returns or if you will turn your back on your family again. So, here's what we are going to do. You will be under house arrest for the whole of summer. Your magic will be bound. And you will spend this time reflecting on your decisions. Narcissa will be the head of the family as she should have been from the start. Once the boys are back at school I will put you under the family magic and then I will decide what to do. In the meantime, you are not to put even a toe out of line, no not even a single strand of your precious platinum hair. Am I clear?" He ended.
Lucius could do nothing but nod. He knew if he tried to retaliate he would be killed, and everyone would agree it was the right thing. You didn't go against the head of your house, that was taboo.
"Moving on, I have stripped the Lestranges of their magic. They hurt the lord and lady of another house. They will die within the week if not they will suffer as muggles in Azkaban." He stated bluntly. Narcissa gasped in shock but said nothing to this.
"Coming to Draco, Narcissa you will reeducate your son as befitting one of the new House of Black. As a traditionalist. We will have weekly dinners with the Tonks and bi-weekly with the Weasleys. You may or may not attend the bi-weekly dinners that are up to you. But the weekly dinners you will attend as we are the new House of Black and I will not have us be distanced or biased or split. And you will be gracious to our guests and family and will broaden your mind and thoughts. Am I clear?" Sirius stated directing the last statement towards Draco specifically. The blond teen nodded mutely, his head whirring from the information overload of today.
"Good. Now, I will bind your magic and then I will introduce you to my heir and my manager" Sirius stood up, beckoning to Lucius and Draco to follow him.
"One second Sirius, I just need to talk to Narcissa for a minute." Astrid said. The dark-haired man nodded before leading the two blonds outside.
Astrid waited for the door to close before putting up the privacy wards and eavesdropping wards. She sent a silent scanner to Narcissa, noting the minor monitoring spells on her and using a confundus on them.
"You shouldn't have had the miscarriages." She said bluntly.
"What?" Narcissa asked confused.
"When we were young, do you remember your twelfth birthday? The potion I gave you as a gift?"
"Yes, but what does that have to do with anything?"
"It's a fertility potion, me and Auntie Cass developed it, it's designed to be in such a way that you cannot ever have miscarriages, every pregnancy will be a success. Unless, unless tainted by dark magic. "
"No. No. No." Narcissa whispered, her body trembling in fear.
"Hey, hey Cissy look at me." Astrid said grabbing her cousin's arms.
"Look, look at me. I was just a kid, I might have made mistakes. I don't know. Just give me a vial of your blood. I'll test it all right?" Astrid said trying to calm her. It didn't work, sobs racked through the older witch's body as she collapsed against Astrid. The two witches sunk to the ground. One whispering in the other's ears, desperately trying to calm her cousin. Astrid desperately whispered in her ear, telling her it was nothing, that it might have been Astrid's fault. Even as she whispered the words, both women knew they were lies. Astrid didn't make mistakes. She never did.
