Today was the day Toshinori Yagi would die.
It was an odd feeling to have but a sentiment the retired hero could feel in his bones when he saw his precious student.
He was wounded and exhausted as he stood over the lifeless corpse of one of the vilest villains humanity had ever known. But, as the alarms of the underground base blared to life, sounding like the roars of angry animals to Toshi's ears, he knew what he had to do as he stepped closer to Izuku.
Today was the day Toshinori Yagi would die, and he had made peace with that fact.
"My boy!" Yagi shouted, his voice trying to will a semblance of his students' normal fire back to life. "You can't stay here any longer! You must get out!"
All for One, the man who had haunted the world since the dawn of quirks, was a vindictive and paranoid man. Someone who held contingency plans for any possible outcome his final gambit would create.
Of course, he had one final backup plan for his ultimate defeat, One final "fuck you" to the society he had tortured for decades.
The alarms blazed louder, a final warning for all unfortunate enough to still hear them. Toshi could almost hear an unspoken countdown in his head.
For decades, the fortress from which the villain had ruled his underground empire had been rigged to explode. The man's sheer spite and hatred attempted to drag his enemy into his tomb from beyond the grave.
"I can't leave, All Might." Izuku said, his voice filled with so much weariness and pain that it almost made Toshi want to weep from the sound." I have to stop this."
Toshi could feel the smile on his dead nemesis's face at his apprentices' words, the mans mocking laughter clawing at his mind. This was the man's plan all along. All for One knew Young Midoyria would ultimately defeat him. He must have seen the writing on the wall ever since Shigaraki and the rest of the league of villains turned against their former master.
All for One had been counting the minutes as his defeat became closer. The man lived day by day as he desperately struggled to keep his dying kingdom alive.
Toshi knew the man must have been planning something. He knew it in his gut, so when the time came for one last confrontation with the man, Toshi had refused to let his boy out of his sight. As the heroes collectively fought against the rest of the tyrants' Nomus outsides, Toshi followed his student into the abyss All for One called home. But even Toshi couldn't imagine the villain would be so spiteful as to hold all of Toyko hostage.
"There's no time, young Midoriya." Yagi spoke, pleading and desperate as he held his student's shoulders." You're too injured to get there in time! You have to escape!"
How the man could build a nuclear reactor underground and have it not be found was as astonishing as it was unsurprising. The villain had decades to worm himself into the proper government agencies to make it possible. Still, it made the situation far more dangerous than it was usually. If the explosions set off the reactor, the entire city of Tokyo would be lost in the hellfire of a nuclear blast.
Millions of lives would be lost in a blink of an eye if someone didn't do something.
It was the villains' plan all along. He knew Izuku would throw himself into the fires of the reactor, into the heart of a nuclear bomb, if it meant even a slight chance of saving those he loved.
Toshi resisted the urge to kick the corpse. Instead, he needed to control his emotions and think logically right now.
"You don't have to stop this, Izuku," Toshi said, solemnly looking into his student's bloodshot eyes." Because I am here."
"No!" the ninth wielder of one for all said, his tired voice panicked as he gripped his mentor's arm." No,no,no,no. You can't! You couldn't survive this!"
There was a time Toshi would laugh the concern off. He was the number one hero, the symbol of peace, and the man who never lost his smile. But that was a long time ago. He felt so much older than he was only a few years ago now. The flames of his power had long since burned out. He was just a man who wanted nothing more than to see his apprentice live a long life. It was something he would do anything to see happen.
Even if he wasn't around to see it.
"Neither would you, my boy." Toshi said as he gripped Izukus' shoulder hard, holding him in place." Not even with your quirk could a person survive this. But I don't have to survive as long as you live."
The boy stopped struggling for a moment as if his master's word hit him at that exact moment. Instead, he cried deep and hard as he collapsed into his teacher's chest. For a moment, the sound of his boys' tears was the only sound Toshi could hear.
He moved his thin and weekend arms around the young man enveloping the boy into a hug one last time before they parted ways. The boy gripped hard as he cried deeply into Toshis's hallowed chest. His cries became softer and softer as he quietly wept.
Today was the day Toshinagi Yagi would die, and Izuku Midoriya would live. Toshi had made peace with that.
"I'm so sorry." the boy whispered, the weariness of his voice returning," I'm so sorry I failed you."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, my boy." The former hero said as he looked down into the young man's eyes." I couldn't be more proud of you if I tried. My only regret is not seeing you achieve the heights I know you will."
"You're just saying that." The boy smiled, his lips quivering as his body was racked with another sob. It was honestly the one aspect Toshi loved about his boy the most. No matter what happened to him, how hurt he was, or how sad he was, nothing could change his heart. No matter how strong All for One made Izuku, it was the young mans heart that made him special.
"I'm not. When the world sees you, the world will cry out that you're the next All Might." Toshi said as he wiped a tear from Izukus eyes." But you're not the next All Might. You're the first Deku! Remember that."
The boy nodded as Toshi let go of the hug, his heart silently breaking as he looked upon his student's face for the last time. Somehow telling Izuku that he would die was far harder than Toshi telling himself.
"Now go and live a long life and be the hero I know you can be." Toshi said as he began to walk away, using every ounce of his willpower to stop the raw emotion from seeping into his voice." And let this old man be a hero one last time."
Toshi didn't turn around. He couldn't. He was afraid that if he saw his boy one more time, he wouldn't be able to go through what needed to be done.
Each step forward felt heavy and strained, his dying and broken down body protesting every labored movement.
Breathing became more challenging as he opened the thick lead doors, an invisible force ripping his insides like a tidal wave of death.
His bones felt thin, and his muscles felt soft and formless. Still, he moved forward silently, willing his besieged body on whatever fumes were left of his once immeasurable power. The reactor was just in front of him now, the three glowing rods burning white-hot from the heat being produced so close to him.
He could feel his skin begin to burn and blister, but he lurched forward, collecting the first pillar in his gaunt hands and pulled, the skin of his hands numb from the touch.
Each rod he removed effectively cut the reacters power in half. With all three rods removed, the city and the millions of people above his head would be safe.
He let the first rod go, the dull thud evaporating as the metal floor began to melt from the excessive heat.
There wasn't much time now, He thought to himself as he watched the solid steel casing of the reactor warped and deform from the strain placed on it. He only had a few moments left before either his body or the reacter failed.
He moved to the second rod, this one feeling even heavier and hotter than the first. Toshi felt his arm tear out of its socket as he pulled even harder.
The rhythmic turning of the reactor engine beat faster as faint explosions ripped the control room Toshi stood in. Seconds felt like hours as he labored, mentally counting down the time it would take for Izuku to escape to the outside world and get the rest of the heroes to a safe location.
He knew his boy was safe now, something deep in his bones telling him that Izuku was safe, the feeling urging him on as the radioactive rod slowly moved.
His boy was safe by now, and that was all that mattered to Toshi. Finally, Izuku was reunited with his friends, and they would be allowed to grow up in a world free of All for One's influence.
"Good, "Toshi thought to himself as he finally lodged the second rod out of its place. His body hissed from the strain as another explosion ripped through the facility.
"You're too weak." the voice of his great enemy whispered into his ear as he moved to the third and final rod." Just give up and let yourself die."
Toshi picked himself up, hobbling on numb legs to the third and final rod. Blood was now dripping out of his mouth, but he didn't care much about that now. His body was failing him, every moment feeling like a lifetime of pain as he gripped the last radioactive rod.
He thought of his master, the first person who gave him the time of day and cared for him more than his actual birth mother. He thought of Gran Torino, the father Toshi never had and the man Toshi had been too stubborn to tell how much he cared for and loved when he had the chance. He always knew the old man would outlive him.
He thought of Melissa and David, how much he wanted to be in their lives, and how the fear of putting a target on their backs kept him away. He thought of Mirai and how much Toshi hated himself for losing out on his best friend's last years because he was too blind to see anything except the mission.
But most of all, he thought of Izuku. How the only thing he regrets more than the past he had missed out on experiencing was the future he had lost out on seeing. He wanted nothing more than to be alive long enough to hear the people say his boy was the greatest hero since All Might. But he regretted even more not being alive to listen to those same people proclaim Izuku as even more incredible than All Might ever was.
With a mighty roar, Toshinagi Yagi put every ounce of his strength into his action, his muscles tearing and ripping like pages from a book as the rod slowly moved. Then, finally, Toshi could do one last heave. A silent roar left his mouth as the final rod slipped out of the reactor, stripping the last ounce of energy from the nuclear dead man switch All for One had put into place.
It was, however, all Toshis body could stand as he fell to the ground, blood seeping from his mouth and eyes like opened wounds.
Toshi relaxed his body, each breath filling his body with fire and death as he felt himself smile. While he had defanged his enemy's final trap, Toshi knew he would not survive his attempt. But he couldn't bring himself to feel sad about that fact. After all, it was the older generation's obligation and duty to ensure the world was a better place for the next generation. Though he knew he could have done it better, Toshi had done the best he could, making these final moments feel much easier for the dying man.
As his eyes grew heavy and the sounds of the explosions became fainter and fainter, his mind shifted to the image of his boy and the rest of his students.
"No need to cry, my boy..." Toshi's voice broke through the pain, his vision long since gone as his apprentice's face disappeared into his darkening mind. "Because I am here..."
Then everything went black.
Toshi was not a stranger to pain. No one who had been a professional hero as long as he had could claim otherwise. Not even All Might.
But nothing in his life could compare to what he was feeling at the moment. Like his bones and muscles were being melted underneath his skin as his mind grew darker and darker. Before, he suddenly felt nothing, like a blanket of numbness had been draped over him.
But it was when Toshi opened his eyes to see the sun blazing over his head and a warm spring breeze brushing against his face that he began to seriously worry about just what the hell was happening to him. He was staring unblinkingly at the afternoon sun against the bluest sky he had ever seen.
"Oh shit." He blurted out in English." Is this heaven?"
He groaned as he sat up, but instead of feeling unimaginable pain, Toshi felt stiff, like His body was using muscles he hadn't used in a long time. The pain that he remembered gripping his body like a hellish vice was gone. Like it was melted away from the blaze of the overhead sun.
He stood up, the world around him looking slightly different from a day ago, like everything was just a bit...smaller.
Toshi walked on unsteady legs towards the railing. A railing meant he must be on top of a building, which meant someone had dragged him out of "All for Ones" death trap. But why leave him on top of a building instead of a hospital? More questions arose in Toshi's head as he took each step, feeling like a newborn learning to walk on unsteady legs.
Toshis' hand gripped the metal railing as he took in the city's sights. Everything was peaceful and quiet, a far cry from the destruction and madness the war with All for One's forces had created. His huge hands gripped the railing in shock at the sight, the sound of metal whining filling his ears as his powerful form indented the...
Wait a minute.
Toshi looked down to see the vast appendages digging deep into the solid steel. Toshis' eyes widened as his vision traveled up his arms, tracing every curve and bulge of his muscular frame.
He felt good.
Better than he had in years, in fact. He looked down to his stomach, expecting to see the life-altering scar mockingly staring back at him as it did these past few years but found nothing.
No blemish. No scar. Just thick slabs of muscle around his torso like armor.
He rushed away from the cityscape, catching himself in the reflection of a window as he did.
He was normal.
Not his everyday typical of the past few years, but his normal. Back before his injury and back before the years of hero work had taken their toll on him. He felt good, better than good, in fact!
He felt amazing! Like entire decades had been lifted off him like a crushing weight off his shoulders. He flexed, savoring the feeling of his body doing exactly what he wanted to do without being reminded of injuries.
He took a deep breath. The air feeling in his lungs not causing blood to shoot out of his mouth was intoxicating. He was looking forward to getting used to doing again.
But before that, he needed to find out what was happening. If this was just an illusion or one of "All for One's" tricks. But most of all, he needed to make sure his students were safe.
Which meant he needed to get down from this building. But Toshi stopped. He turned away from the rooftop door and stared out onto the city below him. If his body was back to what it was before the injury, does that mean?
Toshi took a deep breath and concentrated, almost hesitant to see if he could feel the embers of his quirk return to him. But instead of the ashes he had learned to use since passing the torch down to Izuku, Toshi could feel the burning inferno of one for all in earnest, as if the sun itself burned in his hands,
He laughed to himself as he let the power envelop him, shooting across the sky like a fighter jet given human form.
He flew through the air like an eagle, the wind wrapping around him like a suit of armor as he sped through the sky. Smiling to himself as he caught sight of his reflection against the glass windows of a Tokyo skyscraper.
He plummeted towards the roof of another building only to leap off it the moment he touched down, rising even higher than he was before.
Everything felt so easy. So natural. Toshi felt even stronger than he did years ago! He smiled at the thought this was his chance to fix his mistakes in his life. This was his chance to be the hero he wanted to be to the people who needed him the most.
"What's that? Is it a bird?' A young girl asked her mother as she stared at the figure dancing across the Tokyo skyline.
"It's a plane," a police officer said to her partner. The two women bickering regarding what the figure shooting across the sky faster than any quirk any of them had ever seen actually was.
"It's just a new heroine trying to show off." a costumed hero, one who looked remarkedly similar to Endeavor, said with her arms across her chest. Her costumed sidekicks stood around her, staring with wide-open astonishment at the sight in front of them. " Someone get me her name and agency number. I need someone like that on the payroll."
Toshi landed with a thud, the shockwave throwing the abandoned alleyway into chaos and causing several nearby car alarms to come to life as he did so. He felt lighter and stronger than he had in years like he was a young man again. This was his chance to be the hero his dear boy needed. It was a chance to regain the time his enemy had ripped away from them. But he needed to find out exactly where he was before doing that.
But before he could make his way out of the alley, something caught his eye, something that almost turned his stomach. He picked up the discarded newspaper from one of the many trash cans his landing had overturned. The day's date burned into him like a solar flare.
Today was the day of his first confrontation with All for one that left him the shell of the man he was. He was..in the past. Somehow and someway, he had been thrown headfirst several years into the past. This had to have been a joke, a ploy to confuse him. Things like this only happened in comic books and poorly written sci-fi movies. They didn't happen in real life. He remembered Nedzu, the most intelligent creature alive, theorizing the impossibility of time travel. He called it absurd to the highest degree and something best left to fiction, something he couldn't help but agree with.
But here he was.
A sudden explosion ripped Toshi from his thoughts like deja vu hit him like an atomic explosion. That day was etched into his memory, every tiny detail hitting him like a punch to the face.
He felt his pulse quicken and his senses tighten. He could almost feel his quirk reach out and point him to the past All for One, like a beacon driving him forward.
The changes He wanted to make would have to wait for the moment. Toshi felt the pop of his neck muscles as he stretched them, every inch of his body begging to enact revenge against the man behind countless suffering.
This time he would not fail.
Toshi felt himself stiffen at the sight in front of him. This was... far weirder than he initially thought.
As he arrived at the familiar location of his battle with All for One, Toshi couldn't help but become aware of what he should have noticed sooner.
Though his excitement had blinded him before, he saw nothing but women as he looked towards the sea of faces watching the battle with bated breath. Not a single man or boy was in sight. It was...odd but not impossible,
And while seeing the form of his master, Nana Shimura, as strong and as graceful as he could ever remember seeing her, was enough to stop him in his tracks, it was the sight of the other woman that stunned him.
The familiar black suit was tailored to perfection, fitting the woman's figure like a glove. Her white hair framed her red eyes and cruel smile. It couldn't be, but it was.
He knew that smile and the one he wore on his own face. The woman was All for One.
He could feel all eyes on him, stunned confusion and awe in equal amounts, but not a once of recognition registered on any face.
He saw the cruel smirk on his enemy grow to a full-blown smile as she took in the sight of him, as his own master looked at him with equal parts fascination and confusion.
He remembered more of Nedzus' talks of theoretical sciences. While time travel was impossible for several reasons, other schools of thought held far more credence to their possibility. Stories and theories kept the little super geniuses' mind up at night theorizing over.
"Well." the venomous voice spoke, as shockingly different as it was similar to Toshis ears." So what do we have here?"
"You have to leave here as fast as you can." Nana said, the sound of her voice almost enough to make Toshi want to cry." This is far too dangerous."
"Oh, don't be like that." The white-haired woman said, licking her lips as her eyes traveled up Toshis form. "It has been decades since I've seen a man like this. It has been even longer since one was dumb enough to think he was enough to stop me."
Toshi didn't move, the tightness in his chest long gone as he took a step towards the two women. His fist gripping tighter as the smirk on All for One's face became crazed.
Toshi knew what he had to do.
"No need to fear." He said, with his patented smile etched onto his face as his voice boomed across the Tokyo skyline." Because I am here!"
The silence was deafening as the heroine and villainess both looked at the towering form of the man. Nana looked on in confusion. The thought of someone getting between her battle with her greatest enemy had taken a back seat for the moment. Especially as she saw the utterly massive mystery man striking a dramatic and practiced pose in front of her eyes like he was a professional heroine. He must have practiced in front of a mirror for hours to get that right.
All for One, on the other hand...
..was laughing.
"Aren't you adorable?" She said, wiping a tear out of her eye as she watched the man closer." I think I'll keep you alive for a while. "
But as Toshi prepared himself for the colossal and frankly strange task ahead of him, he could hear the sound of the tiny principal laughing in his ears.
"Time travel is, unfortunately, the realm of science fiction." the small chimera said as he sipped his tea. "Now multiverse theory. Now that's an interesting school of study."
