If you had told me that I would awaken in a tomb 2000 years after the end of the war I would have said you were nuts. One moment I'm having dinner with the rest of my team and those who supported me only to be awoken by what could only be described as an earthquake for the history books. It took some time to gain my bearings once I had fully come too to realize exactly where I was although it didn't help that the only light I had came from a crack in the wall. "I swear to the gods above if this is some prank and someone put something in that wine" I groaned out while sitting up and running a hand across my face.
A few deep breaths were needed before I tried to slip off of what I assumed to be a large slab of something hard according to the knots that ran down my back. As my feet landed upon the surface my knees buckled and I was sent to the floor. "Maybe I was asleep for longer than I thought".
Out of breath and now out of ideas the only thing that came to mind was rolling over onto my back to look at the ceiling above. Another distant rumble caused pebbles to fall but I didn't move. I was too lost in thought. 'What in the world is going on? Why am I here alone? Where are the others?' were the thoughts that ran through my mind until another, albeit much closer, rumble occurred. They couldn't be aftershocks as they were too frequent and strong. 'Is someone fighting? But why? I thought we had settled things'.
It took some effort but I got my legs to work this time and was now standing. Squinting I took a better look around now that the sun was in my face. Pillars lined the sides of the cave leading to the marble slab I had laid upon till minutes ago. Everything felt minimalist at best. The only thing that struck me as odd was that there was one thing missing. My armor and amulet. The weight of it had gotten me through the toughest times of the war as it felt like everyone was sitting upon my shoulders, lending their faith and energy. But now it was gone and my neck felt empty without it. I wanted to look further but the growing energies outside reminded me that there were other priorities right now. Like getting out of this room and to the outside to figure out what was going on.
"So, how am I going to do this? There aren't any doors or obvious ones at least" I mumbled out in thought while looking around for anything that could be an exit or point to one. There was one door but it had since caved in from the time it was closed and the distant battle didn't help going off the fresh rubble in front of it. An inspection of the floor revealed no traps that he could use or any switches which left him with only one option left. The cracked wall. It's climbable but the debris in front of it is small and shifts easily.
"Well its now or never so lets get this over with". A few slips and curses later I finally gained purchase on the wall and took my first look outside. A path descends below to a desert for as far as I could see. Gullies cut through the rocks and green abominations crawl through the depths. "Where am I? I don't remember this ever being a desert. What happened to the valleys and towns"? There was no sign of any life besides those that inhabited the gullies. The energies from earlier were also gone now with only residual amounts remaining. Dragging myself through the hole I dropped to the path below and began walking. There was nothing else to do but find some sign of civilization and figure out just how long I've been asleep.
AN: Hello. Sorry for the delay. Writers block hit hard and I realized the pacing was way off from where I wanted it. That being said I am redoing this from the start and trying out another POV. Please leave reviews whether you liked it or not as both allow me to better my writing and the story as a whole. Thank you.
