Chapter 1
A young man with blond hair finished wiping off the blood from his sword. He was wearing a white mask with the image of a fox on it with sky blue eyes that could be seen through the mask. He stared blankly at the man in front of him. His entire chest was ripped open and he's dead, cold eyes stared up at the boy. He didn't care, he didn't feel anything. If he wasn't ready to be killed at any moment he shouldn't have been a shinobi. The man's eyes were brown. The same shade as his when he died.
Bursting out of his sleep, a young blond man sat up gasping for breath. He had tears starting to leak down his face making his blue eyes gain a wet shine. He grabbed at his hair and pulled tightly to try and bring himself back. He should have been used to this by now. He had these nightmares every night. No, not nightmares. Memories. He was the one standing above that dead man. He killed him. Took him from his family. No, it wasn't the memory that was what scared him. It was the constant reminder that that part of him was still in him. Any day he could snap and go back to being a killer. When he was here it was easier. He eased his worries. He was the only one to completely know of his past and night terrors. Taking deep breaths he tried to bring himself back to reality. He was in the hotel room he had rented to stay in for the night. He was safe. Everyone else was safe as well. He slowly stood up and walked over to the window that faced the forest just outside of the village. The night was clear and the stars were shining bright. He felt another onslaught of tears as that made him think of him.
Suddenly a flash of light lit up the night sky as five beams of light came soaring out of the sky. One went right over his head, another the opposite way from him. On of his left and another on his right. The last one landed a little ways into the forest he was currently watching. Quickly he made four silent clones and with a silent command sent them on their way to the other four light beams. He then jumped out the window of his fourth story floor and raced off to the forest making it seem as if he had disappeared. He slowed his pace as he neared the crash sight. The trees surrounding the landing zone were blown out and some had mini fires on them. He put those out before continuing to his destination. Something about the situation bothered him. That might seem like common sense, but with everything that he had been through; you never knew.
The closer he got the more unsettled he felt until he realized why. The forest had gone silent. No animals were nearby and he could feel a strong-ish presence near him. Not too powerful but it blew the normal ones he had found in this time out of the water.
Coming closer to point zero he found a crater. It was huge and had blown out about a mile(1.6km) diameter ring around the impact zone. He slid carefully down the crater using chakra to stay standing. As he got closer he could see a body laying in the middle. It looked like a child's. He sped up his pace slightly in concern for this young life. He still didn't rush in for in his time even a child could kill you. He was living proof of that. Slowly he got closer to the child until he was close enough to touch him. Reaching out he felt a burning sensation as he touched the child. Slowly pulling his hand back he realized that the child had burnt his hand. That was interesting. Nothing had injured him in a long time. It didn't hurt. His pain receptors had long given up, but it was still fascinating.
Reaching down again he cleared the child of debris and realized that it was a boy with bright pink hair and a scarf with what seemed to be pants with a rope tied around his waist to act as a belt. Carefully he reached to the boy's neck to check to see if he was still alive. The boy's pulse tumped strongly against his fingers and he let out a sigh he didn't know he was holding in. Now comes the weird part. The boy felt like him. Not body wise, but in the fact that he had what the young man perceived to be the boy's power, but there was another bigger power inside him. Making the hand sign that a good friend of his had taught him, he entered the boy's mind. His mind was a volcano with lava flowing everywhere. Using chakra to stand on the lava he slowly made his way to the source of power he could feel in the boy.
"You really weren't a normal human," Coming around the corner the young man came face to face with a giant red dragon, "Naruto."
Naruto stared up at the dragon before something in his mind clicked. "Igneel." He acknowledged back. "What are you and your son doing this far in the future?"
"Agnlogia got much stronger than either of us thought would happen. We had to send the children away in hopes of keeping them safe and stopping him."
"We? The rest of your gang sent their children too?"
"We had no other choice. We were weakening and Agnlogia was getting stronger. We all would have died." Naruto's face softened. "The others were also sent here. Do you know where they are?" Ingeel questioned with worry leaking into his voice.
"I already have clones at their locations as we speak. Don't worry." Naruto said with a faint smile making its way on his face. He had missed his scaly friend.
"I wasn't worried. I was keeping my priorities straight. There's a difference." Naruto's face clearly said,"I don't believe you in the slightest."
"Moving on to bigger things," Naruto's voice hardened and Igneel noticed the difference and shifted his attention to Naruto, "Does Natsu, or any of the kids, know what has happened?"
Igneel looked down at this. "No they don't. Honestly we were hoping you would be here to find them."
Naruto ran a hand through his hair as he shook his head. "I'm guessing that you don't want Natsu to know you are in him until he's old enough not to let it slip in an angry rant."
"That would be preferred. He doesn't deserve to be hunted down because of me."
Naruto could understand that. He could also understand how lonely Natsu would grow up without Ingeel there. "Don't worry nothing will happen to any of the kids." At this Igneel looked up. "I'll watch them for you all." Naruto gave a small smile to Igneel.
"Thank you Naruto. Everyday my debt to you only seems to grow." With a nod and a wave Naruto left Natsu's mind.
Back in his body Naruto took a long look at Natsu. He had grown sense he had seen him last. His strong arms weren't as scrawny and he seemed to be eating well. Just as fast as the small smile had come it was gone. He wasn't there for any of it. He wasn't Natsu's dad, but he felt like an uncle at the very least and he didn't even recognize Natsu until he had seen Igneel. He really was a horrible person. The last time he had seen Nastu was over 500 years ago.
Given what happened it made sense, but he hadn't looked that hard for him. After about 20 years of searching he had given up on the kids and tried to live his life for himself. Once and a while he would wake up sweating because of a nightmare of how the kids died. Most of the time he could only hear their screams and pleas for help in a pitch black world that never ended. Then one by one they would stop yelling and everything would go quiet. That was the worst one. It was only about 200 years ago that the dreams had stopped and the children had faded into a distant memory. How could he have forgotten them so easily? A little moan and shifting next to him alerted him to Natsu's awakening.
"Come on Natsu. It's time to wake up." Naruto gently shook him. "Time to join the land of the living."
"No~, I don't wanna get up yet~." Natus moaned as he tried to get away from Naruto's hands.
"Come on, it's time to get up. I have to make sure you are okay." Naruto said with a little smile on his face. He trusted Igneel and the others, but he had to make sure his godson was okay.
"Okay? I'm okay. Wait who?" Natsu's brain slowly started to work and he realized that his dragon father wouldn't be able to shake him with human hands. With that he shot up and ran a little distance from the person that was touching him. Naruto stayed right where he was as Natsu turned around to see who had awakened him. He could see Natsu's brain processing what he was seeing and then a huge smile broke across his face and he ran straight into Naruto's open arms.
"Nee-san!" Natsu yelled as tears flowed out of his eyes, "I thought you had left us for good. It's been so long since I've last seen you." He turned his head up to give Naruto a smile and his heart broke. How could he have given up on this? With a surge of emotions Naruto kissed the top of Natsu's head and spoke, "I'm sorry Natsu. I got busy with something, but I will never leave you again."
Natsu relaxed in his grip and took in a deep breath of Naruto's scent. Then he realized. "Where's Igneel?"
Naruto had been dreading the question, but he knew it would come. "Igneel left you with me as he went to go and take care of something dangerous. He will be back, but I don't know when."
"Will he be okay?" The sadness in Natsu's voice almost broke Naruto. 'I've gotten soft.' Naruto realized, but one look at Natsu's face made that okay.
"He will be fine as long as he doesn't have to worry about you, so you're going to stay with me."
A small smile came onto Natsu's face as he buried his head into Naruto's chest and gripped his clothes tighter. "Don't leave me."
"Never again, that's a promise." They fell into a comfortable silence before one of Naruto's clones came crashing through the trees.
"I've got Wendy." It said as he bent down and let the little girl out of his arms. She looked around slowly until she saw him. "Ni-san!" She yelled as well as she collapsed into the arm he had opened while the other stayed locked around Natsu. "Hi Wendy."
Natsu looked at her and gave her his big smile. "Ni-san is Wendy-chan."
Wendy smiled and nodded back before bearing her head in Naruto's chest again with Natsu following suit. The last three of his clones arrived minutes later at the same time carrying Gajeel, Sting, and Rogue. They also looked around confused until they saw him with Natsu and Wendy and came running over.
"Where have you been?" Gajeel questioned with anger in his voice.
"I had to take care of something, but I'm here now and never leaving you guys again." Naruto stated with an apologetic look on his face.
Gajeel saw the look and broke down and hugged him, "You promise."
"I promise." Naruto said without hesitation and the last three kids sunk into his warmth with Gajeel sovereign Natsu out of the way to make room for him, Sting hugging his back, and Rogue following Sting. "Hey, let me lay down so we can have room." Once Naruto had laid down he had Rogue using his right shoulder as a pillow, Sting on his left shoulder, Natsu was laying in the middle of his chest, Wendy was almost laying on Natsu, and Gajeel was curled between his legs.
"I missed you." Sting said softly and Naruto gave him a kiss on the head as well.
"So did I. I'm sorry I ever left and I will forever feel terrible about it."
"I'm tired." Rogue stated as his eyes started to close.
"Then sleep. I promise I will be here in the morning." Naruto spoke softly as Rogue closed his eyes completely and his head went limp. Sting followed next and the other three eventually fell asleep as well. Naruto couldn't fall asleep. He was comfortable. More comfortable than he had been in a long while, but he didn't want to waste another day with the kids. He only needed about 5 hours of sleep every three months so we would be fine. Sometime around dawn Wendy started shivering in her sleep. Feeling it Naruto moved some fire chakra through his body to raise his body temperature to keep her warm. In about five minutes he stopped shivering and settled down into a peaceful sleep and he continued to move the fore chakra around.
As long as they were safe and comfortable he could care less what happened to him. But he wouldn't always be able to protect them. He was good, great even, but he was still only mostly human. There would be a time where someone got past his guard or they stumbled into trouble and he wouldn't be able to reach them. Looking down at all the sleeping bodies on him he made up his mind. The kids would need some training.
