Chapter 02: Akatani Mikumo: Origins

A boy with black hair named Akatani Mikumo was racing back home while holding a backpack over his head to protect himself from the rain as he had forgotten his umbrella.

Of course he didn't have friends to give him one to begin with, especially since he's only started school.

His adopted parents have kept constantly moving nearly every couple of months, which could also be the reason why he's never made any real friends.

Father Yoichi did promise had primed him that they'd stay in one place this time, that he'd be able to attend his middle school graduation.

They'd settle down in a town just behind Musutafu where most kids have worthless Quirks fitting to a hero, Akatani can only hope that those kids can find acceptance anywhere in the world.

Akatani can understand why his adopted parents wanted to keep him safe from his powers as people with stronger, powerful Quirks tend to disappear.

Akatani noticed a news paper article about Hisashi Midoriya, a fellow business man who many claimed was handsome with white curly hair and red eyes.

It seems that even small towns seems to have portrait of this guy.

No one ever seem to know what Midoriya's quirk was although there had been rumors that he had dozens of different Quirk but not a lot of people bought that.

Rumors also suggested that he was a major villain in the underworld who allegedly kept his wife locked up in a basement and put out a bounty on his own son.

All the rumors were said by one of Akatani's new friends, a girl with red/green hair named Izumi Nohi.

Akatani didn't believe a word of it, but liked hearing the girl talk about her passion and he has high hopes that they will become good friends.

Racing up the steps of the porche, Akatani dropped his wet backpack with a soft sigh.

The wooden house had a traditional Japanese tiled roof, two stories, and a crane weathervane.

He wrung some of the water out of his hair before opening the floor and taking his shoes off.

One of his fathers, a fairly short man with short, dark hair parted twice away from his narrow eyes named En, poked his head into the hallway and noticed Akatani's wet appearance.

"Forget your umbrella?" Asked En in sarcasam.

"It looked so clear this morning, no cloud was in the sky all day." Replied Akatani.

En nodded in response.

"I'll make you some hot chocolate." Said En.

"Thank you." Said Akatani with gratitude in his voice.

En tossed him a towel before heading towards the kitchen.

En was a man of few words but was always kind.

The tatami mat floor crinkled under Akatani's socks.

He pushed open the sliding door to enter the kitchen.

The cupboards were made of cherry wood with a silver fridge and oven.

Two round lights hung over the black marble counter.

A potted yellow orchid sat by the long window.

The microwave already hummed with a mug inside.

Uncle En stood on a stepstool to reach for the hot chocolate tin.

Despite being an adult, En wasn't much taller than Akatani as a child.

"Don't tell me we're already out?" En muttered as the stepstool wobbled and he began to fell backwards.

Though Akatani ran forward to help, someone else moved faster.

That someone was the only female of the group and mother to Akatani, Nana Shimura.

Nana is described as a beautiful woman with a tough demeanor. She was a tall woman with a curvaceous figure, and at the same time, she was well-built. She was fair-skinned and had a small mole below her bottom lip, centered to the right, and sharp, intelligent eyes with long eyelashes. Her hair was dark and straight, kept shoulder-length, with the exception of a clump of short bangs hanging above her forehead, and was usually styled in a half-up-half-down bun.

Her hero costume consisted of a dark, sleeveless bodysuit with a high collar, yellow elbow-length gloves, and white knee-high boots. Around her waist was a belt with an angular golden buckle, a small cape attached around the back which hung down to her knees, and over her shoulders was a longer cape, buttoned to the shoulders of her bodysuit.

Nana flew through the door and put a hand on En's back.

Hovering in the air, she reached over his head to grab a tub of peppermint hot chocolate.

"Be more careful, shorty." Teased Nana with an infectious grin.

She released her Quirk Float and dropped to the ground.

Nana was in her early twenties.

Akatani had no memories of his original parents, but he'd never felt the lack, because he had seven adopted dads and one adopted mom in total.

"Stop putting everything on high shelves, just because you can fly." Grumbled En.

"That wasn't me." Said Nana as she held her hands and waved them as to prove her innoncence.

"Banjo put the hot chocolate back last time." Said Nana.

"Guilty as charged." Said Banjo as he called from the living room.

He wandered in.

Daigoro was a large muscular man of a wide build. He had a square jaw, small dull blue eyes and lacked eyebrows. He was also bald and had a very short beard.

His hero costume consisted of dark leather clothes, golden stylish goggles, and a bandolier. The leather jacket had yellow shoulder pads, and as Daigoro always had it open and didn't wear a shirt, it showed his muscular torso, which his lovers greatly had no problem.

"Little man!" Yelled Daigoro in excitement upon seeing Akatani.

When compared to the other parents, Daigoro considered himself to be the 'fun dad'.

"How was school?" Asked Daigoro as he sat down on the table.

Akatani shrugged in response.

"It was okay, honestly, my math and science classes are still far behind what I learned while you guys were home-schooling me." Said Akatani.

"At least we're reading an interesting book series for Foreign Literature, it's called Harry Potter, and it's all about this boy who discovers he's a wizard and now goes to a magic school where his powers can grow." Said Akatani as he sat on his seat.

Daigoro grinned.

"I used to love those books and the movies." Said Daigoro.

Akatani kept talking as En brought him a mug of hot chocolate.

"We're discussing the last book now, the one where Harry is finding objects to kill the main villain while his school was at war with the evil wizards during the second half." Said Akatani.

His parents exchanged disgusted looks.

Daigoro let out a growl.

"So that's how they're telling the story to kids these days?" Asked Daigoro.

Akatani took a sip of hot chocolate.

"Mmm, this is good, thanks you Papa En." Said Akatani as he set down his mug.

"We're supposed to read all seven books by next week's lesson, do you all know where the other six are, 'cause the libary had already gave them out to all the students already." Said Akatani.

"I'm pretty sure Yoichi has a complete set of the books, you can borrow them from him." Said Nana.

"Even better, thanks." Yelled Akatani as he grinned.

"Do you want to borrow Blackwhip today?" Asked Banjo.

"Hey no fair, i was gonna lend him Float today!" Yelled Nana as she pouted.

"Smokescreen is great for a rainy day." Said En softly, joining the argument.

Akatani held up his finger to try and stop the argument.

"Father Banjo called first dibs, i'll play with the other quirks later." Said Akatani as he held out his hand.

They shook and Akatani's palm flashed red and tingled as the ability transferred.

"Thank you, Father Banjo." Said Akatani in gratitude.

"No problem, just make sure to give it back at dinner, Little Man." Said Banjo as he grinned.

"I call dibs next time!" Yelled Nana as she held her hand out like a school kid.

"The weather is supposed to clear up after dinner, perfect for flying lessons." Said Nana.

One of the many things Akatani loved about his family was how they were always happy to lend him their quirks.

(As long as he only used them at home and out of sight.)

Akatani seems to have the ability to steal or give away Quirks, something he told that he had from his father.

Akatani once heard his adopted parents called this Quirk All For One but never questioned it as he could tell that it was a sensitive subject for them.

Judging from a whispered conversation he'd overheard, his adopted parents had a heated competition going over whose quirk he liked best.

After Akatani finished his hot chocolate, he headed upstairs.

First, he stopped outside the room belonging to his second and third oldest fathers.

"I had a great day at school, and i brought you both a snack." Said Akatani loudly before he set down a plat of apples on the floor at their doors.

Akatani's second and third oldest fathers got sick sometimes.

Not sick in the body but sick in the heart.

Periods where they'd both do nothing but stare at the wall.

They were going through one of those episodes right now, where they didn't want to talk to anyone, but Akatani knew they'd open the door and take his snacks after he was gone.

Akatani knocked on the last door on the second floor.

"Father Yoichi. are you awake?" Asked Akatani softly as not to cause a heart attack.

"Come in." Replied his oldest father.

Uncle Yoichi lay in bed with his mussy white hair falling all over his face.

He read a comic book.

A tray of pills sat on the end table next to him.

Medical equipment filled the back of the room.

Yoichi had always been ill, but lately it had gotten worse.

Akatani had heard his parents talk late at night about going to the hospital, but they'd deemed it too risky.

Akatani suspected that Father Yoichi's deteriorating physical condition was the main reason the family had decided to settle down in this isolated town for a while.

"How are you feeling?" Asked Izuku with a worry tone in his voice.

Father Yoichi looked up before smiling.

"I'm completely fine, your other fathers and your mother fuss too much." Said Yoichi.

Akatani raised an eyebrow, not believing a word of it, but knowing he'd get no other answer.

"Do you have the Harry Potter book series?" Asked Akatani as he decided to get the to point.

"We're reading the entire series in class, and I need to read all seven before next week." Said Akatani.

"I do!" Yelled Yoichi while he stood up.

In his pajamas, he padded over to the closet and flicked a button to reveal a false wall in the back.

The hidden cubby held books stacked all the way to the ceiling.

"I'm always happy to share my books with you." Said Yoichi as he started handing the books to Akatani.

"Let's talk about the series afterward." Said Yoichi.

"Sounds good." Said Akatani while helped his oldest father hold books as Yoichi rooted around the tightly packed space for the right ones.

"Here you go, the entire series." Said Yoichi as he finished getting the last book out.

"I can't wait to read them." Said Akatani as helped his father stack up the books again.

Yoichi coughed and Akatani grabbed his father's arm before he fell.

Blood leaked through the fingers covering Yoichi's mouth.

"Should i call Father En?" Asked Akatani in great worry.

En had the rudimentary medical training of the family.

"Don't worry everyone, a bit of dust tickled my nose, that's all." Said Yoichi as he determinedly made his way back to bed.

"I'll keep my mouth shut if you promise to get some sleep." Said Akatani, not letting up.

Yoichi laughed.

"Who's the adult and who's the child here?" Asked Yoichi in sarcasam.

Akatani raised an eyebrow.

"Well, which one of us likes to read books late at night with a flashlight under the covers?" Akatani asked back.

"Guilty as charged." Replied Yoichi sheepisly as he raised his hands.

"I'll rest, I promise." Said Yoichi to ease Akatani.

When Akatani stepped back into the hallway, the plate of apples he'd left out for his second and third fathers had vanished.

Akatani headed upstairs to his bedroom in the attic.

He'd specifically asked for this room as soon as he'd heard they'd be staying in this house for a while.

He liked the musty wooden smell from the slanted beams overhead and the skylight.

The short ceiling didn't bother him, and he even had a balcony attached and a telescope for watching the stars.

A brick pillar supported the light blue walls.

One of his fathers, Hikage Shinomori, had helped him build a triangular bookshelf stretching all the way up to the ceiling to fit all his books.

Practicing his fine control with Blackwhip, Akatani used the dark tendrils to shift aside the rug and reveal a camouflaged trap door under his bed.

He hid the Harry Potter series inside the shallow compartment, just in case.

Then he sat at his desk and opened his laptop.

I'm gonna follow in their footsteps, just you wait. Thought Akatani as he was reaching the greatest school in all of Japan.

U.A. High School.
