Jane walks out of the shower, with Maura's fancy microfiber towel barely covering her lanky body. She rubs a smaller towel through her hair, angling her face down toward the ground as she speaks. "Maura, you're out of shampoo. I can go run and get some more if you would like", she says as she opens the fridge, examining its contents. Jane shakes her head, dissatisfied with the options. She whispers to herself as she looks at the oat milk, kombucha, and cage-free, organic eggs.

"Too healthy", Jane says as she closes the door, jumping as she sees who was behind it.

"Shit!", Jane says as she pulls the towel tighter behind her.

"Jane, I apologize for intruding. I just got off the plane and I wanted to see Maura first thing," Ian confesses as Jane holds her arms across her body for extra coverage. His arm rests around Maura's neck and she seems entranced by him. Jane can't help but admit that the accent is a bit sexy. She crosses the room quickly, heading back up the stairs.

"No worries! I think I'm the one intruding. I'll be out gone soon," Jane says as she returns back to the bathroom to dress quickly.

Jane sits down on the counter edge, frustrated that Ian has decided to show up just as things were finally getting somewhere with Maura. She knew what she has with Maura is special, but she also knew that Maura and Ian had years of experience as a couple while living in third-world countries. They had survived some dark and challenging situations, and nothing brought two people closer together than trauma. Jane should know. Whenever Ian left, Jane was there to pick up the pieces. She sat through countless hours of comforting Maura, stroking her hair and rocking her back and forth as she held her. Every time it happened, Jane started to hate the man even more. She was jealous of the pull that he had over her and wished that Maura would find closure and move on from that chapter in her life. She hated how Ian treated Maura, as if she were a disposable plaything instead of the love of his life. Yet every time he appeared, Maura would lose herself in him for a few days, until he left again to go save children in another part of the world. Sometimes, she wished she could wipe that cocky smile off his face. Her mood turns for the worst as she dresses in leggings and a tank top before returning back down the stairs. Ian is telling a story, gesturing wildly with his hands while Maura laughs. Jane had never felt more like a third wheel.

Is this what it felt like for others to be around her and Maura?

Jane clears her throat, drawing the attention of the two before her. "I'm headed out for a run. Maura, let me know when you would like me back. Cavanaugh still wants us to stick together", Jane says as she eyes Ian. "You know, if we can."

Maura's still smiling, as she tilts her head slightly. "Didn't you just finish a workout, Jane? You're going to injure yourself putting that much strain on your body."

Jane doesn't even make an effort to hide her disdain this time. "I need to clear my head." She walks out without another word and slams the front door, hoping it would ruin the moment that Maura and Ian were having.

"She's a feisty one, eh?" Ian suggests. Maura begins to worry about Jane, wishing that she chose to stay instead.

Distracted, she says, "Yeah. That's Jane."

Ian, sensing a change in the mood, grabs Maura by the arms and pulls her towards the kitchen. "You can still make a mean omelet, can't you? God, I would kill for one right now. We were stationed in a village where all of the inhabitants were vegan and you have no idea how much I missed a good plate of steak and eggs."

Maura, with her mind now focused on Jane, misses the rest of what Ian has to say as his voice trails off into another story about his latest project.

Outside, Jane's feet are pounding into the pavement as she punishes her body. She runs to the local high school and is grateful to see that the stands next to the baseball fields are empty. Forgotten baseballs are scattered throughout the dirt and the bleachers are lined with sunflower seed shells. Jane uses her hand to clean a spot as she sits down, leaning back into the bleachers behind her. She stares out towards the field, watching as T-ball practice takes place in the field next to her. For the next hour, she sits and enjoys the peacefulness. With the sounds of parents cheering and plastic bats hitting rubber balls, she thinks about how to prevent Maura from getting hurt by Ian.

Maura makes steak and eggs for Ian and after, he embraces her tightly as a show of appreciation. As they separate, he holds her face in his rough hands and kisses her on both cheeks. He moves his hand to the base of her head and shifts closer to Maura. Maura smells the familiar scent of his cologne, a smoky smell with hints of cinnamon and orange. She thinks about all the times she has been in this same position, welcoming Ian back with open arms, no matter how badly he left her in tears as he left. She puts her hands on his forearms, looking at him. The skin around his eyes crinkles as he smiles at her and Maura feels her body's desires begin to override her brain. He pulls her back in and leans down as he kisses Maura, his facial hair rubbing against her chin. A second passes before Maura straightens, pushing herself away. Ian looks confused, having anticipated that the woman would be throwing herself at him. In fact, by now, they were usually breathing heavily in bed as they made up for lost time.

"I can't do this with you anymore, Ian. It's not fair that you come and go as you please and I just have to be here, ready and waiting for whenever you decide you want me in your life," Maura says without emotion.

"Maura, where is this coming from?" Ian asks. He feels embarrassed having been rejected by Maura for the first time and if he's honest, his ego is bruised.

Maura looks at him as if she is looking through him. "I respect myself too much to let you treat me this way. I'm also in love with someone else, Ian."

Ian sits back on the stool, processing the words that just came out of Maura's mouth. He looks at her, deciding to try one last time. "Then stop me if you don't want me. But if I can recall, you love the things that I do to your body. Body language doesn't lie, Maura. And both of us have always understood the attraction between us. Our bodies yearn for each other. So stop me if what I'm doing is unwarranted."

He approaches Maura again, kissing her neck and her ears as he hears Maura's breath quicken. Maura feels hopeless, unable to deny the way her body reacted to Ian. It was basically muscle memory, paired with years of fulfilling each other's physical desires. He places her on top of the counter and himself between her legs, biting at her neck as she grasps at his hair.
