Jane sat on a lawn chair, watching the waves crash against the cliff edge. She has a beer in her hand and closes her eyes as the ocean breeze blows her hair around. She takes a sip, relishing the taste as the cool liquid goes down her throat.
The sound of a car door shutting makes her open her eyes and she smiles as she watches Sophie struggle to take all of her luggage out of the trunk. Sophie was like her mother in that regard, always overpacking and bringing along things that would never be needed. She stands up, bracing herself against the arms of the chair as she hoists herself up. After years of sports, tackling criminals, and raising three kids, her body was not what it used to be. Grey hair lined the roots of her hair now and wrinkles depicted the years of laughter and love that she had lived through. From the passenger seat, her other daughter stumbled out, still half-asleep. Jane's youngest daughter, Lucy, was more like her, a hot-headed and loud woman. With an interruption to her nap, Jane knew that Lucy would be grumpy right now. She looks for her third child, Antonio. When they had chosen that Italian name for her only son, Jane's mother had been delighted. Antonio looked around, grinning from ear to ear when he found his mother.
"Ma!" Antonio shouts as he waves his hands over his head.
"Hi, babies! How was the drive?" Jane responds, yelling over the sound of the waves.
Sophie turns and greets Jane with a shy wave. God, was she like her mother sometimes. The three make their way toward the house as Jane heads in the same direction.
"Long," Lucy groans. "Sophie drives like a grandma. I asked her if she could be nice enough to get us here before my 40th birthday."
Sophie rolls her eyes and says, "You're only 19, Lucy. That's completely impossible. Stop being melodramatic."
Antonio pushes both of his sisters in a playful way. "Enough, you two." Turning to Jane, he asks, "Where's mom?"
"Your mother is inside preparing dinner. I tried to help her but she pushed me out and insisted that I would only distract her." Jane says as she ruffles her children's hair the way she did when they were younger. "Go give her a kiss, we have missed you guys so much."
As the three burst through the doors, the house is filled with their overlapping voices. Jane leans against the front door, watching as her family is reunited again. Family photos were lined against the staircase and the family of five was pictured throughout various stages of their lives. Some of her favorites were when Jane and her wife were still first-time parents with Sophie, when Lucy had first lost her baby teeth, and when Antonio had grown into a young man. With luscious black hair and eyebrows to match, it was no mistaking whom these children belonged to. All three children had inherited their mother's eyes, however, sporting gorgeous hazel eyes. Jane watched as the children grabbed food off the plates when their mother wasn't looking and she joined in, laughing as her wife swatted their hands away.
Maura Isles was older now. Even with a few more wrinkles, she was as beautiful as the day Jane first laid eyes on her. The favorite part of Jane's day was still when she woke up next to this woman and when Maura was the last thing that she saw every night. They had made the most of their time together, with three wonderful children and several pets. Jane and Maura were also the godmothers of both Tommy and Frankie's children. Tommy had stayed single, spending most of his time with T.J. He had become the father that Jane wishes they had when they were kids themselves and she was so proud that her younger brother had matured into a responsible adult. Frankie was happily married to Nina and had eventually risen through the ranks to become Lieutenant Rizzoli. Jane's mother, Angela, had married Sean Cavanaugh a few months after Maura was pregnant with Lucy. Korsak had retired, running the bar full-time with his wife, Kiki. And finally, Frost had made amends with Anna, the FBI agent. They spent half of the year traveling the world now, often popping in to visit Jane and Maura for a few days each time. Jane had experienced a long and fulfilling career as a detective, but those days were a distant memory now, as her family remained her main focus.
Jane is happy.
Maura feels Jane's fingers twitch and jolts up, not sure if she imagined it. She scans the monitor, ensuring that Jane's vitals were stable. Doctor Luna had just left, leaving Maura with another warning that Jane could wake up with no ability to speak, move, or remember anything. It was also a possibility that she may never wake up, remaining a comatose patient for the rest of her life. Maura sees as Jane's fingers move slightly, attempting to hold Maura's hand.
"Maura? Where did Sophie go?" Jane asks.
Maura feels tears beginning to form in her eyes and blinks them away, wanting to not miss a single second of what was happening in front of her.
"Jane, you're up," Maura says as she brushes her hand against Jane's cheek. She hits the call light on Jane's bed, alerting Jane's care team immediately.
As the nurses rush in and page Doctor Luna, Jane reaches out again. "I wasn't able to hug Lucy and Antonio goodbye, Maura. Where did they go?"
Maura and the nurses make eye contact and a sense of panic falls over Maura. She isn't sure what Jane is talking about and worries that Jane may be experiencing some type of deficit. As Doctor Luna walks in, Maura tells her about what she has seen of Jane's cognitive function. Doctor Luna conducts a neurological examination and orders a few more tests, as Jane falls back asleep, clutching Maura's hand to her chest.
She's back in their family home, as older Maura walks up to her, holding Jane's face. Their children are laughing in the background as they sit squished against each other on the couch. Maura runs her fingers through Jane's hair, looking into her eyes.
"Jane, honey, we love you. But you need to wake up now. We'll see you in 25 years, okay?"
Jane pouts her lips. "I don't want to leave, Maur. I love it here."
Maura smiles as she pulls Jane in for an embrace. "I know, baby, I know. But you need to go make things right with me, so we can finally get started on building this life of ours together."
With that, Jane wakes up to persistent beeping next to her and the sound of people talking. As she opens her eyes, the talking ceases as everyone turns towards her. A familiar face appears in front of her and she nearly cries tears of joy. It's Maura, in present day.
She reaches her arms around Maura's body and hugs as hard as her sore body can manage. Jane kisses Maura's forehead and whispers into her hair.
"We are going to have such an amazing life together."
Her face is pressed up against Maura's and their tears mix as they hold each other.
The nurses excuse themselves and for the first time in a while, Jane feels no pain.
