Chapter 6: Abby's Zit-tastrophe
Abby was a pretty tough teenage girl. She spoke her mind, wasn't afraid to stand up for herself or others, and not that much bothered her. Nne day, Abby was helping her mom at her salon, by sweeping up the extra hair that was on the floor.
"Thanks for helping, Abby." her mom told her.
"No problem." Abby replied.
After she put the discarded hair in the trash, she took a glance at herself in the mirror. She thought she looked pretty good, but then she noticed a little spot on her face. But before she could examine it any further, her mom called her.
So she got back to work.
The next morning, when Abby woke up she went to the bathroom to get ready for school. As she brushed her teeth, she suddenly spat out her toothpaste. She looked at herself in the mirror, and saw on her cheek was a red bump, a zit.
She was so upset, she began shouting in Korean. As soon as she came out of the bathroom, her parents came up to her.
"Abby, what's wrong?" asked her dad.
"This."
Abby pointed to her zit. Her parents looked at it, and softened their faces.
"Abby, it's just a little zit." her mom told her.
"A little zit? This thing is huge."
"Sweetie, it's really not that big." her dad told her.
"And besides, it's all part of growing up." added her mom.
Abby groaned, why didn't parents ever understand?
At school, Abby showed up with a band aid on her face to cover the zit. Then she found her friends in the hallway.
"What's up, guys?" she greeted.
"Hey Abby. What happened to your face?" asked Crystal.
"Oh, just a little mishap. I'm fine." Abby assured.
"So can you guys believe the concert is only three weeks away?" Miriam mentioned.
"No way." said Tyler.
"I can't wait." squealed Mei.
"It's gonna be awesome." replied Priya.
Abby hoped that this zit would be gone by then. When the bell rang, the friends went to class. During lunch, Abby was in the bathroom looking at her zit.
"(Sighs) Why did I have to get this thing?"
When the door opened, she quickly put the band aid back on.
"Hey, you almost done in here?" asked Mei.
"Yeah, I was just washing my hands."
"Is that thing on your face still bothering you?"
"It's nothing, I'm sure it'll be better by tomorrow."
That night, Abby washed her face with lots of soap.
"Let's hope this works."
And then she went to bed. The next morning when she woke up, she checked herself in the mirror again. But to her horror, not only was the zit on her cheek was still there. But there was another one on her forehead, and one on her chin.
Shocked, angry, and upset she began to curse in Korean.
"Abby! What was that?" Abby's mom called.
"Nothing." Abby called back.
She looked back at herself in the mirror. There was no way bandages would fix this, so there was only one option.
When she got to school, she wore her jacket with the hood, and had the hood over her head. This made her friends confused.
"Abby, what's going on with you?" asked Mei.
"Yeah yesterday with the bandage now this?" added Priya.
Abby sighed, and pulled down her hood. At first her friends were surprised.
"Whoa, those are bad." Tyler remarked.
"Tyler!" hissed Miriam.
"No, he's right." Abby told.
"It's really not that bad, just a couple blemishes." said Crystal.
"Not that bad? Yesterday I just had one now I have three."
"Calm down, I'm sure we can find a way to get rid of them." Mei comforted.
"You think so?"
After school, the kids went to Abby's house and tried to help her. First they tried Crystal's way.
"My dad said whenever he had zits he would use a special zit cream."
She gave the cream to Abby, and she put it on her zits.
"There, does my face look any better?" Abby asked.
"Er..." Crystal replied.
To be honest the zits didn't look like they were going down. Miriam suggested steaming. So using a bowl of hot water, Abby put a towel over her head, as she sat in front of the bowl. After a while, she got out from the towel.
Her face looked hot and sweaty.
"Did it work?"
"Nope." said Mei.
After drying her face off and cooling off, they tried to think of another method.
"What about covering up the zits?" suggested Priya.
"I already did that."
"Not with bandages, with makeup."
That made sense. They borrowed some makeup from Abby's mom, and put it on her face.
"How do I look?"
"Slightly better." Miriam told her.
"Why don't we just pop them?" thought Tyler.
"But you're not supposed to pop zits." Mei told him.
"So what? There are lots of things people aren't supposed to do that they do anyway." he reasoned.
They all looked at each other.
"We'll use that as a last resort."
For school Abby used the makeup again, and she as she went about her day, no one noticed the zits. And when she took it off when she got home, the zits seemed to be going down.
"With any luck these will things will be gone in no time."
Over the next couple days, Abby kept washing her face, and using the cover up. Then one day, all the zits were gone. She was so happy, she shouted happy praises in Korean.
