The Shinobi from the Hidden Vault

Morning normally starts like how it did everyday for Naruto, with him waking towards the alarm he had set on his pip-boy before getting up out of bed to start his day.
While already fully dressed in his vault 115 jumpsuit, his only other form of attire that he wore was his near iconic orange jacket that he seemed to cherished as one of the few things to make him stand out not only in his adopted family, but fellow vault dwellers.
Stepping outside his room, he saw his adoptive big brother and mother as they were waiting to enjoy some breakfast and pack his lunch.
"Morning Naruto" greeted Gil as he was sipping on his coffee as he ate some good old fashion bacon and eggs for breakfast.
"Hey Gil" as he sat at the other end of the table as a bowl of sugar bombs had already been made for him, before Maria came by and kissed him on the head.
"Make sure to don't forget your lunch today Nick, you need all your strength and energy if you plan to show off and make a good impression in your final test today" said Maria as she had set aside a standard issue vault-tech lunch box for him, 2 bottle of purified water and 3 bottles of Nuka-Cola.
"Thanks mom" said Naruto as he longed since came to accept that, besides Gil, his new name here in the Vault was officially Nick since they said his name was so foreign that the last thing they wanted was for him to be labeled as a communist, whatever that is.
"So ready for you big day" asked Gil, "As ready as I can ever be" said Naruto between bites of his cereal as he continued to eat breakfast, before grabbing his things to start his day.
While normal a moment of awe, entering and exiting the vault as he did every day, seemed a little overdramatic on account of it being a giant ass door that can withstand and keep them safe from getting their asses nuked to kingdom come.
Still it was an everyday processed he got use to as he made the 5 mile walk towards back to Konoha like he did every day, difference was that this will be hopefully the last time he'll have to walk to the ninja academy since it was graduation day today.
Though frankly speaking while Naruto was indeed excited about finally being able to graduate, he had to go through this process already on 3 different occasions, each one he failed.
The difference this time around though was that should he fail again, he was going to leave Shinobi life behind him and just settle down to someday being a free lancer representing the vault, like what Gil does.
Which honestly doesn't sound bad when all things are considered that he could finally explore the world carrying something better than the BB gun he had on his back or the baseball bat he held over his shoulder.
Whatever the case maybe, after today he'll be done with the ninja academy, as it approached ever so closer as he made it through the villages front gate.
Once inside, Naruto had ignored the stink eye and evil glares he got from the people here, something he still never knew why, but he only had to deal with them briefly since his home was away from them.
"Hey Naruto" came the voice of Sasuke as he was waving at him with Itachi standing right behind him.
"Hey Sasuke" greeted Naruto as both exchanged fist bumps, "Ready for today" asked Sasuke, "Yeah pretty much" said Naruto as he wasn't as enthusiastic as Sasuke or anyone else for that matter.
"Everything alright Naruto" asked Itachi as he was hard to believe the little blonde boy from the vault wasn't as excited like he normally was.
"Honestly this is my what 3rd, 4th attempt trying to pass the ninja examine, so honestly I'm not so sure the odds are in my favor" said Naruto.
"Cheer up Naruto, I've got a feeling things will be different this time around" said Itachi, "What do you mean by that Itachi" asked Sasuke as he found what he said to be borderline suspicious.
"Oh nothing, anyways shouldn't you both be getting to the academy already" said Itachi, "Right come on Sasuke, first one there gets that first Nuka-Cola of the day" said Naruto.
Racing to school, both barely made it in class on time before they all waited patiently with Iruka to tell everyone what was going to be their final exam.
"Alright students, settle down, we're going to start your final exam, where should you succeed, you'll be given your ninja headbands, as they serve not only a symbol to be carried as a shinobi for the hidden leaf, but as a shinobi in itself, so I wish you all luck" said Iruka.
As everyone seemed to murmur excitingly amongst themselves with anticipation, Naruto was patiently waiting to hear what the final examine will be on about.
"Alright for your final examine, you'll be to present yourself with at least one perfect clone of yourself" said Iruka as hearing that really made Naruto felt like coming here today was a waste of his time.
As the next hour passed, one by one every student in class was able to perform the clone jutsu with ease until at long last Naruto was the last person to go up and perform his best clone.
Unfortunately his best attempts were anything but as Iruka sighed disappointingly from Naruto's lack luster performance.
"I'm sorry Naruto, but you failed once again" said Iruka in a calm tone as almost everyone in the class seemed indifferent over the little blondes outcome, with only but a small handful.
"Everyone else you're all excused to go about celebrate however you want for the rest of the day, Naruto think you can stick around" said Iruka as everyone slowly but surely left behind, with only Sasuke, Hinata, Choji, Shikamaru, and Kiba to linger around a little and watched over sympathetically towards the blonde.
"Let me guess, this is the part where you say I screwed it for the last time that I'm officially kicked out of the academy" said Naruto, "No in fact it's quite the opposite actually" said Iruka.
"It has come to my attention and knowledge that out of all the students that not only I, but for the academy for that matter, never had to deal with a student with such a unique upbringing" said Iruka.
"With that being said, I've not only brought up with the principle, but word had spread back to Lord Hokage and they decided that we're to give you this rare chance and exception to prove yourself, through an alternative means" said Iruka.
"Exactly what are you getting at" asked Naruto, "Why not go and take a break and have some lunch, and come towards training ground number 13 sometime around 2" said Iruka with a warm smile.
"Hold on is this a private event or something" asked Naruto, "No by all means feel free to invite whatever friends you want to see you succeed, and just know that I'll be rooting for you" said Iruka with a smile.
"Ok, thanks Iruka" said Naruto, "Anytime Naruto, now go on and hang with your friends" said Iruka as Naruto did so.
Upon exiting the building, Naruto saw that other then Sasuke, a handful of students decided to hang around for whatever reason, with some being in his class, while others weren't.
"So what Iruka said" asked Sasuke, "He said to go to this place called training ground 13 around 2, said that it'll be my last and final chance to prove myself" said Naruto as this got Sasuke to smirk.
"You better not mess up as I'll be watching you" said Sasuke, "I won't, now come on let's go tell you brother about this and have some lunch" said Naruto as both began to head off the academy grounds.
On their way out, Naruto and Sasuke spotted Shikamaru and Choji, with the latter eating a big bag of barbeque chips.
"Hey guys" greeted Naruto with a wave, "Oh boy" said Shikamaru said as he didn't mind Naruto, nor did he anything personal against him, it's just that he's the reason Choji has an equally bad soda addiction now as much as he had with chips.
"Naruto, hey buddy, do you got any Nuka-Cola on you" asked Choji eagerly, "I do, have one bottle with you name on it" said Naruto as he tossed the soda beverage to him.
"Nuka-Cola the best thing to happen to me since chips" said Choji as he popped the top off and chugged away.
"Well hey glad you like, but anyways I don't know if you guys are busy or anything later on today, but apparently the academy is giving one more chance to pass" said Naruto.
"Really now" asked Shikamaru with skepticism, "Yeah really, it's gonna be at a place called training ground 13, so get there before 2 so you guys can witness me succeed" said Naruto.
"And how do I know this isn't some sort of prank" asked Shikamaru, "If it is, it'll mainly be on my expense" said Naruto.
"Come on Shikamaru, least we can do is give this guys our support" said Choji, "Alright, not like I had anything better to do" said Shikamaru, "That's the spirit, and if you guys know anyone else who'd be interested, feel free to spread the word" said Naruto before he and Sasuke headed off.
"So Sasuke, you gonna tell Itachi about you finally becoming a ninja" asked Naruto, "He said that he had a mission today and couldn't make it, but said once he came back, we'll go out for a victory dinner afterwards" said Sasuke.
"Sorry to hear that man" said Naruto, "Hey, it's cool, he maybe my legal guardian and only family member now, but he's a ninja, and unfortunately that means that's his only means to provide for the both of us, that is until today" said Sasuke.
Naruto remembered vividly on the day that he went and visited Sasuke and Itachi at the hospital, shortly after what became known as the Uchiha Night Massacre.
Apparently while everyone was killed, they barely came out alive with Sasuke, being shocked over the whole experience, and Itachi surviving with only a bullet in the arm, which was able to fully recovered.
Supposably, the murderer had came from Naruto's vault, vault 115, as the assailant in question went into the Uchiha district guns blazing, and wearing a suit that no one was familiar with.
No one knew who the killer was, all that was known was that in a desperate final effort to make it out alive, Itachi set the manic on fire where they had burnt to death.
Oddly enough, Naruto took into account of everyone he knew in the vault, and so far he found the story of it being a vault dweller to be farfetched.
Whatever the case be, right now Naruto and Sasuke, mainly Sasuke here, had to deal with a current problem at hand right now, and that was being attacked by his fan girls.
"Sasuke, what are you doing here all by yourself" asked Sakura as she and many other girls circled around and closed Naruto off, which he felt majorly offended about.
"I was off to meet with my brother and tell him how I passed" said Sasuke lying through his teeth.
"Well, if you like maybe you and I can do something later on" said a different fan girl as they all began to fight over who gets to hang with Sasuke.
"Actually girls, I'm off to go see Naruto take his final exam later on" said Sasuke as all the girls were surprised in silent, before they all turned to look at the blonde they'd always snubbed, before looking back at Sasuke.
"But hold on didn't Naruto already failed" said Ino, "Hey they're gonna give him a second chance today at training field 13, and I was curious to see how'd he do" said Sasuke.
"Well if Sasuke's going, then I'm going" said a different fan girl, before they all argued amongst themselves as they left, leaving the duo a moment of peace.
"You know I think it be a lot more easier if you decide to go out with one of them" said Naruto, "No way I'm dating a girl that I have no intentions to be with other than to give me peace at mind" said Sasuke.
"Besides, I get the feeling me dealing with those girls are over now that we're finally ninja" said Sasuke, "Ok fair point" said Naruto as both had opted to kill time before Naruto's big moment.
Later
As it came close to the time reaching 2, Naruto and Sasuke were surprised over seeing how many people bothered to came.
"Huh, this exceeds my expectations like by a lot" said Naruto, "I wouldn't worry about them as you should about you should be about passing this test" came the voice of Gil from behind.
"Gil, what are you doing here" asked Naruto, "Besides to offer moral support, I also came to give you some things to help you out with your final exam" said Gil as he began to hand Naruto the following.
A couple of bobby pins, some stimpacks, a wire cutter, and a 10mm pistol with some bullets.
"Gil, what the hell am I expected to face in there" asked Naruto as he began to examine the empty fire arm for the time being.
"This was made in collaboration with the Hokage who pulled no stops and with proper collaboration with some of us back home in the vault, we're able to make this gauntlet you can call it, where you'll be force to face all sorts of dangers should you not only pass, but choose to become a ninja" said Gil.
"Now come on, it's best not to keep the people here waiting" said Gil as Naruto began to holster everything away and while he did carry the 10mm pistol on his hip, he had no intentions of using it one whatever the hell is out there waiting for him.
"Naruto, I know you'll succeed" said Sasuke supportively, "Thanks Sasuke, I needed that" said Naruto before facing the front entrance of his final exam.
"Well here goes nothing" said Naruto as he opened the gate and made his wait into the opening area.
"Naruto Uzumaki, for your final exam, you're to venture you way into the forest that'll lead into a barrack, where inside you must retrieve a water chip, a piece of technology that is valuable in order sustain and keep fresh, purified water into the vault" came the voice of Iruka through a loud speaker.
"In the forest, you'll be facing many dangers, so travel with caution, for each and every one of your actions will be judged in your final exam, good luck and be safe" said Iruka.
Being given his instructions, Naruto made his way into the forest, where his first challenge came in from the presence of 3 bear traps set aside in front of his path.
Taking out his BB gun, he took his chances to shoot the traps loose, but to no avail, before swinging down his bat, with one of them getting dangerously close to getting his hand.
Tossing aside the now damaged bat, Naruto saw something hanging on the tree's before he notice it was a bouquet of grenades.
Searching the surrounding area, Naruto notice the trip wire that was only a few feet away from him, before he took out the wire cutter and disarmed the trap.
Safe and secure, he continued to walk along before waiting for him were 3 shinobi, clearly dressed up as bandits.
"If you want to get to the water chip, you'll have to get through us" said one of the fake bandits as they all held big sticks and clubs.
Taking his chances, Naruto began to take point and shoot them with his BB gun, which while not entirely fatal, definitely did hurt.
Still these were are Chunnin level ninja's who definitely had a sense of pain tolerance, as shown by how they still pressed forward and manage to hit Naruto on the chest with the logs they were carrying.
While taking the hit head on, Naruto knew that enough was enough and he had to step up.
Using V.A.T.S., he aimed for the eyes for one of the Chunnin present, causing them to let go of their club, giving Naruto a chance to pick up the weapon, before knocking the chunnin to the ground.
Determined Naruto took a stand as the remaining chunnin turned and nodded towards each other.
"Alright kid, you're good to go" said one of the Chunnin as Naruto accepted their offer, tossing the club aside.
Moving his way forward, Naruto spotted an injured dog sitting in the middle of the forest, as it whimpered away.
"Hey boy, you alright" asked Naruto as he gently approached the canine to see that it had a slight limp, "Don't move boy, this'll only hurt for a second".
Injecting a stimpack towards the dog, all the dogs pain and worry seemed to all go away, as the dog was not only thankful, but also more than willing to follow Naruto along on his journey.
"Alright boy, come with me" said Naruto as he and his new friend continued on their way to a barrack that was right there in the middle of the forest waiting for him.
Walking up the steps, Naruto realized that the door was lock, via terminal and he only grimaced since his work around the terminal was playing 'Automatron' 'Pipfall' and 'Red Menace'.
Still making an attempt the hack the thing got him locked out indefinitely as he turned to kick a tool box that he just realized was there.
Remembering the bobby pins Gil gave him, he tried his hardest to pick the lock but wound out proving to be too hard for him, which has happened to him on occasion.
Frustrated and felt he wasn't going to graduate, Naruto sat down frustratingly as his new dog went up and licked him in comfort.
"Thanks boy" Naruto said as he scratched the back of his dogs head, "I don't suppose you know how to pick a lock on this thing now, do you".
Giving a bark, the dog went down the steps and went under the stairs of the barracks, before coming back holding a key in its mouth, much to Naruto's joy and impressiveness to the canine companion.
"Good boy, when this is over you're getting a nice steak alright" said Naruto as the dog barked in joy.
Opening the tool box revealed a note as to how to input the password, which was California.
Finally unlocking the barracks, Naruto saw a bunch of sandbags lain around, and some ammo boxes here there, before seeing placed on a mantel was the water chip.
Picking it up, Naruto was ready to step out and finally passed, but was stopped when Mizuki stepped in the room.
"Well, well you made it this far brat, got to admit it's pretty impressive, for someone they've been pulling the ropes for out of wasted pity" said the chunnin instructor as his words towards Naruto go beyond improve.
"I've already got the water chip, so unless you want to get your ass kicked like those other guys I faced back in the forest, let me through" said Naruto.
"Did you honestly think you had what it takes to go up against 3 chunnin by yourself, someone who isn't even a ninja, much less repeated failure" said Mizuki.
"I don't know, why not ask them yourself" said Naruto as he began to unholster and aim his BB gun towards the chunnin who was, as the dog growled towards the assailant.
"Tough talk kid, real tough talk for a monster" said Mizuki, before an intercom speaker static was heard.
"Mizuki, that is enough, allow Naruto to pass immediately, and we'll talk about your actions later on" said Iruka, before Mizuki threw a kunai, destroying the intercom.
"Now that he's been silenced, don't think about escaping kid, I already ensured to lock the door behind me, by destroying that terminal mounted outside, so your only means of escaping is by taking this key from my cold dead body" said Mizuki as he pointed at a key around his neck.
"Why are you doing this to me, what the hell did I ever did to you" asked Naruto as he was tired of being given the look he had always hated from just about everyone here in the village, and demanded to know why.
"I'll spell it out to you, you're the 9 tailed fox himself, inside of you lies dormant the embodiment of evil that had massacred dozens of live that night 12 years ago" said Mizuki.
"What, no you're wrong I don't recall ever doing something so barbaric" said Naruto as hearing this truthful revelation was upsetting to say the least.
"Exactly what a monster would say, deny it all you want, but unlike everyone else here, I'll do the whole village a favor and kill you myself" said Mizuki.
Pulling out 2 large forearm length kunai from behind that hard short sharp spikes at the end of the loop, Mizuki was ready to lunge in and kill Naruto, had it not been for the dog to jump in and bite the man in the leg.
"Gah! Stupid mutt" said Mizuki as he stabbed down alongside the dogs back, as it yelped in pain, before kicking the dog into a corner.
Realizing how dire the situation was, Naruto could only aim his BB gun and shoot Mizuki in the eye, causing him to frenzy in his blindness.
"You little shit as he used his sole good eye to throw a kunai towards Naruto's chest, but missed by several inches and wounded up not only disarming, but destroying his BB gun.
"Shit, that one was meant to hit you in the heart" said Mizuki as he removed his hand from his eye to reveal that he was crying blood, with the BB still longed in his eye.
"No worries, I won't miss this time if I get up close and personal" said Mizuki as he lunged forward to stab Naruto in the head, but the blonde simply ducked down and back kick him in the knee.
"Ah, you little shit" hissed Mizuki before throwing himself on top of Naruto, bringing the kunai down towards his head once more, but Naruto moved his head in time to dodge the fatal blow.
Trying to escape, Naruto was instantly pressed down by Mizuki's free hand as he looked down on him with menacingly mad eyes.
"Time to die you little shit" said Mizuki as he was trying to pull out the kunai, while Naruto had to think fast, before realizing and accepting the reality the only way he was ever going to escape was if he used the promised last resort weapon.
Pulling out the 10mm pistol, he fire 2 shots into Mizuki's stomach and one in the leg, injuring the man and giving the blonde enough strength needed to push him off and bash the 10mm pistol into his face, knocking out the rogue ninja.
"Safe at last, Naruto went to check on his dog, who was alive, but severly injured, before turning back to grab the key off Mizuki, before picking up his new dog.
"Come on boy, let's get out of here and get you some help" said Naruto as they proceeded their way out the bunker, where Iruka, Gil, and the 3 chunnin that played the role as bandits were waiting for him outside.
"Naruto, thank god you're alright" said Gil, "I'm alright but he needs immediate help" said Naruto as he was talking about his dog.
"No worries, we'll get this boy the help he needs" said one of the Chunnin as he took the dog out of Naruto's hands and disappeared in a flash.
"Naruto, I'm so sorry you had to hear what Mizuki said to you" said Iruka with eyes of sympathy.
"So it's true then, that I'm really a monster that massacred everyone 12 years ago" said a saddened Naruto, before Gil knelt down to hug his kid brother.
"You're not a monster, you hear me, you're Naruto Uzumaki, or Nick De La Cruz back in the vault, but more importantly you're my little brother, someone whom I'd never call or look as a monster" said Gil as his words got Naruto to cry tears of joy.
Seeing that they're having a moment, Iruka gestured the remaining chunnin to apprehend the Mizuki, as they all waited out for Naruto to calm down.
Later
After calming down, Naruto was relieved that Iruka cut the video feed the moment Mizuki went on his tirade, so that no one else, but those that know who Naruto is, knows his secret.
Additionally, Naruto learned that the bullets he shot towards Mizuki weren't lead bullets, but rather rubber bullets, meaning the man will live, but will spend his whole life behind bars now.
But more importantly, the dog made a full recovery and was actually one of Naruto's gift he was to receive today, other than his headband, and he decided to name the German shepherd Dog Meat.
Right now, Naruto, along with Gil, and Sasuke were walking their way back to the vault for his victory party.
"So you're ever gonna tell me what the hell happened in there with that maniac" asked Sasuke, "Someday" said Naruto with a smile as Sasuke rolled his eyes.
"I still can't believe you decided to name your dog, Dog Meat" said Sasuke, "Hey I promise not to bring him on missions since I know you're a cat lover" said Naruto teasingly.
"That's beside's the point" said Sasuke with slight annoyance, "Calm down Sasuke, this suppose to be a happy day for the both of you, now let's hurry back, mom has prepared us a nice all American Salisbury steak dinner with some Blamco Mac n Cheese" said Gil as he knew that the emo pretty boy did loved Salisbury steak as much as Naruto loved his sugar bombs and Nuka-Cola.
While an eventful day, more was to come for Naruto as he now had duties to serve as his villages next generation of ninja whether he wanted to towards the end or not.
Alright first chapter is done, the next chapter will be put up some time soon, so be ready for that.
Also to those that are curious as to all the other missing details as to who Naruto's adoptive family are, how he came into the vault and all that, well to answer that, I did wrote one shot of this some years ago that I pulled down since it never did took off like how I wanted to, so most likely I dedicate some chapters towards written flashbacks should this get popular enough for this 3-5 shot.
