Chapter 6 : Teacher VS Student

Arkunov seethed as he descended through the academy. For Baras to expose his failings to him had been humiliating. Discovering after all the trials Tremel had put him through, Arkunov was infuriated to learn that he had earned very little prestige in comparison to the other acolytes.

As he reached the corridor where Tremel's chambers were Arkunov paused. Tremel had years of experience on his side, Arkunov would have to overwhelm him through sheer force if he hoped to achieve a victory. Glancing around he saw a side chamber on his left, he entered it. He sat down in a meditative position. He focused on the rage he felt at Tremel drawing it into himself to feed the dark side power within him. He sat there for several minutes till it was a concentrated force within him, he then proceed towards Tremel's room.

As he turned the corner he saw the overseer facing him lightsaber in his hand, but not yet ignited.

"You sensed me coming them." Arkunov said. It was a statement not a question.

Tremel nodded. "I know why you are here. Baras has sent you to kill me," Arkunov nodded "If you succeed I am no longer in his way and I you fail I destroy my own plans. A master stroke indeed.

"I must warn you though. I do not intend to lose." Tremel said his voice calm showing no hint of emotion.

Arkunov replied "Neither do I." As soon as the words had left his mouth Arkunov released the power that he had writhing within him in one powerful force scream. Tremel was blasted backwards off of his feet. slamming into the far wall. The scream did not stop at causing damage to Tremel though, it toar through the room shattering vases, cracking the walls and floor beneath them.

Arkunov stepped slowly towards Tremel who had just staggered to his feet. Arkunov saw that Tremel was keeping his weight off of his right leg and limping slightly. Tremel ignited his saber and charged towards Arkunov who deflected the strike that was aimed at his head. Arkunov fell into form 3 Soresu deflecting the strikes Tremel sent his way with form 4 Ataru. Arkunov began to notice that his older opponent was tiring, the energetic sequences of Ataru too much for him to sustain, whereas Arkunov had conserved his energy by using Soresu. Sensing Tremel's weakness Arkunov went on the offensive slamming a force augmented kick into Tremel's right leg, he felt the bone crunch beneath his heel. Despite this Tremel was able to keep up a defence and Arkunov switched to his preffered form, Shien.

A series of powerful blows rained down towards Tremel, who barely managed to deflect them. Augmenting his strength with the force Arkunov brought his weapon down in a vicious overhead strike sending Tremel's lightsaber flying out of his hand. He then proceeded to ravage the overseer with a rapid series of three strikes with his blade, the first two slicing horizontally across Tremel's chest and the third stroke was brought down vertically over the overseer's heart.

Tremel fell to his knees unable to continue the fight. Tremel rose his head as Arkunov stepped forward for the killing blow. "The purity of the sith lies in your hands now." he said. Arkunov shook his head in disgust, even in his last moments Tremel failed to understand that the sith could not risk dividing their strength by refusing those of non-sith blood. For the empire to truly succeed the sith had to gather all those strong in force, otherwise they would constantly be outmatched and outnumbered by the jedi.

"Your ideals die with you!"

These were the last words that Tremel heard before Arkunov removed his head. His task complete Arkunov leant down and used his warblade to cut off Tremel's right hand, he noticed that it had a ring attached to it engraved with symbols in the ancient sith tongue. As he was about to leave Arkunov saw something glinting in the corner of his eye. Turing he that it was Tremel's lightsaber. Reaching out with the force he pulled it into his hand and examined it. It was unexceptional the handle completely black with an activation stud near the blade emitter.

Arkunov pressed the activation stud he watched as the scarlet blade sprang from the weapon. He gave it a few practice swings testing the weight and balance. However this appeared to be to much for it, as the blade flickered and died. Arkunov realised that he must have damaged it more that he first thought, though he still clipped it to his belt as the components could come in useful for him later.

As Arkunov proceeded back through the academy he saw many acolytes staring at him or more likely the blood soaked warblade that was strapped to his back. Glancing around Arkunov saw that none of the Imperial Guard stationed around the room made a move to stop him. Darth Baras must have informed them of his immunity from punishment.

When he finally reached the room he saw Baras standing in front of his desk, examining something that lay on top of it. He turned at the sound of Arkunov's approach. "The acolyte returns and with a bloodied weapon. Tremel is dead then? Show me his hand?" Arkunov handed it over.

After he finished examining it Baras began to laugh "Yes now you have proven yourself worthy. Take this one ring as a...memento. Remembering the past will strengthen both your resolve and your spirit."

Baras handed over the ring Arkunov had been examining earlier. Nodding in acceptance Arkunov slipped it onto his right ring finger.

Baras continued "I'm impressed that you had the strength to destroy him. Did you know that he thought of you like a son?"

Arkunov waited a moment before answering considering his words carefully, no doubt that Baras was testing him. "It was necessary" he replied "Tremel's beliefs were limiting the Sith. To allow him to live would mean that he could spread his poison to others."

"You mask you're feelings well. Just make sure that you do not suppress them. By embracing the Sith code and killing Tremel you are now free of his shackles. And you have also escaped his fate."

Arkunov replied "And now I am in a new set of shackles. Yours."

Baras chuckled at this pleased that he had realised this "Perhaps. But you will find that their reach is far greater.

"Now there are sacred ruins in the tomb of Tulak Hord. Retrieve a shard from all three of the altars there and the return to me. Vemrin and my other acolytes have already begun." Arkunov curled his hand into a fist. He would not allow Vemrin to best him!

"I will return soon my Lord."

Okay done with that. Now I see a lot of you have been trying to guess who Arkunov's father is and a lot of you are on the right track. I will probably reveal this at the end of Korriban.
