Authors note. So here is Chapter 2! Hope you like it.
"DAZAI!"
"What is it Kunikida?"
"Care to explain why I can't find my Ideals book?"
"Now what exactly are you suggesting Kunikida?"
"You know exactly what I am saying Dazai! Where have you put it?"
Kunikida was yelling at this point while Dazai remained seated on the sofa, casually reading his The Complete Suicide.
"I have no idea what you're talking about Kunikida."
Dazai gave one of his infamous smirks, looking up from his book to calmly stare into Kunikida's eyes. After the events with Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, tensions were high within the Armed Detective Agency, but Dazai being Dazai, acted as if nothing was wrong and continued to mess with Kunikida. Atsushi looked at them with a fond smile on his face, he was grateful for the fact that Dazai was allowing things to go back to normal. He didn't quite feel like having to answer anyones questions over the events that had transpired just last month. While yes, he had had to give in his report, nothing else came of it, and he would rather keep it that way. Even though Fyodor was still out there somewhere.
"Look, just give it back to me and I'll leave you to your damn book."
"Well I'd love to give it to you, if I knew where it was."
"DAZAI! Just give me back my book!"
"Uh Kunikida," came the timid voice of Atsushi. As entertaining as their fights sometimes were, Dazai could get carried away in teasing Kunikida, and Kunikida could forget where to draw the line. It was often best to stop this before it got too out of hand. "I think I saw you put your book on the other side of your desk."
Kunikida stopped and turned towards Atsushi, with murderous intnent in his eyes.
"Do you really think I would be foolish enough to- uh."
There it was. Plain as day. Kunikida's Ideals book on the opposite side of his desk. Kunikida was speechless.
"Well there we have it," said Dazai in a smug tone "Kuunukidaaa, your slipping."
"Ugghh, shut up Dazai!" Kunikida replied, extenuating Dazais name. He was fed up. How had he missed it, the book was right there on his desk. He chalked it up to still not being over the events that had happened only one month ago. While he had put faith in his friends, he still hated having to stay on the sidelines.
Just as things were calming down, the President walked into the room, with Ranpo following in slightly behind him.
"Hello everyone," came the commanding voice of their President, "We have a new job for you. I am assigning Kunikida, Dazai and Atsushi to it."
The three stopped what they were doing to pay full attention to what their President had to say next. There hadn't been many jobs as of late, but with Fyodor still on the loose, they had still been plenty busy.
"The client has asked us to go and check out a warehouse on the opposite side of town. I will send you the exact location. They say that there have been some strange occurrences and have asked for us to check it out. You leave tomorrow, I suggest you get ready. "
And with that, as soon as he had arrived, the President left. Ranpo followed along behind him. The three remaining agency members looked at one another before returning to their previous activities, with the prospect of a new job playing on their minds.
Dazai couldn't quite explain it, but he had a bad feeling about what was to come. Something was going to happen at this job, something bad. But for now, he would just have to wait and see.
They arrived at the warehouse at the agreed upon time. Strangely, they hadn't met with the client before this. Normally, they would talk with their client face to face, but this one only wanted to talk via emails and messages. Not to mention the fact that they used untraceable accounts, which simply furthered Dazais doubts about this job. But regardless, the three of them stood outside of this seemingly unsuspecting warehouse, and were now trying to figure out where to go from there.
"So.. should we just go inside and look around?" Atsushi asked. He may be a member of the elite Armed Detective Agency, but that didn't mean that he always knew what he was doing. He often looked to his superiors for guidance and, while he had become more independent as of late, it was always nice to know he had people who could support him.
"Yeah I suppose so." Came Kunikidas' smooth reply.
Dazai remained silent and carefully evaluated the situation. Something about this whole thing still didn't sit right with him. Kunikida took note of Dazai's silence, despite what appearance showed, Kunikida valued Dazai's judgement and often wanted to have his input on a situation.
Kunikida knew that Dazai's level of intelligence rivalled Ranpo's. Hell, Dazai was probably the only person who could ever compete with Ranpo. Dazai had been the youngest executive in the Mafia and had been trained by his father, the previous Mafia boss, since he was a child, despite that 'training'being what most would consider torture. Dazai was ruthless and manipulative when he wanted to be. To be honest, they were lucky that he had joined sides with the Agency, or else things could have gone a lot differently. Kunikida had no doubt that, had Dazai remained in the Port Mafia, the Agency never would have stood a chance. Not that he would ever admit that to anyone.
The three agency members slowly stalked into the seemingly abandoned building. There were no sounds besides the noise of their shoes hitting the ground.
"Something doesn't feel right," Dazai said almost to himself.
Suddenly a noise was heard coming from the other room. The three of them tensed up. Atsushi activating his gift, changing his arms into the tigers, and Kunikida getting out his notebook while Dazai remained standing still. A door burst open to show Ivan Goncharov and Alexander Pushkin walking through, carrying some heavy looking boxes.
"Why did the boss want us to bring him here again?"
"I am not sure. But I do not question the Boss's actions, he has a reason for everything."
They both froze when they saw the other occupants in the room.
"Look, it's those damn fools from the Detective Agency."
"Get em! And you, stay put." One of them said to seemingly no one. However, just before the unknown man fully disappeared, Dazai was able to see the edge of a sand-colourd coat. But before he had time to think about it, he was suddenly face to face with a man with silver hair and bandages wrapped around his head. Both men had dropped what they had been carrying and ran to attack the slightly flustered Agency members.
Kunikida and Atsushi were fighting against a large man with a small tuft of hair on his forehead. The man seemed to lack physical strength, but was still able to hold back Kunikida and refrain him from fully writing anything in his book. However the man got too distracted with Kunikida and forgot about the weretiger. Atsushi used his transformed arms and ran and jumped onto the man's back. Sinking his claws into his flesh and tearing at it. The man let out a feral scream and desperately reached behind him in an effort to get Atsushi off of him. But this distraction allowed Kunikida to use his gift and create a wiregun. The air around Kunikida began glowing as his ability 'Doppo Poet' was activated. The wiregun formed in Kunikida's hand and was quickly aimed at the stumbling man, whose back was torn to shreds and was bleeding profusely. By now Atsushi had jumped off of the man's back and had landed gracefully next to Kunikida. But the man was still unsteady on his feet, allowing Kunikida to fire the wire at the man's legs, trapping him and causing him to collapse onto the floor.
Meanwhile, Dazai had been fighting against his own opponent. The man was able to manipulate the Earth to his own will. But whenever he fired one of his rocks at Dazai, its momentum would cease instantly, leaving Dazai unscathed.
"He warned me about you." Came the silky voice of the bandaged stranger. "He told me you were the one he was focused on. That you were the only one who could throw a wrench in his plans"
"Well, whoever this man is, I would love to meet him." Dazai replied.
"Oh you will see him soon… very soon. But until then."
And without another word the man was back on the attack. Bombarding Dazia with an insane number of rocks and covering himself in a rudimentary shield of cement. Dazai though was unconcerned with the enemy's attacks. His powers would have no effect on him so he casually walked up to the stranger and used his own ability to stop the barrage of rocks. Realising he was unable to use his powers against this man, they resorted to hand to hand combat.
Dazai knew he had a gun in the holster on his hip, but decided he would see where this fight would go, and whether he could get any information regarding who this man's boss was. The stranger threw the first punch, aiming for Dazais mid-section. Dazai easily sidestepped, and gave a fast kick to the man's stomach, keeping his hands in his pockets the whole time. The man fell back a few paces, and stopped to clutch at his stomach and regain his breath.
"They were right about you.." The man said between pants. "You really are a demon. The demon prodigy of the Port Mafia, am I right?"
Dazai scowled. He would rather not be reminded of his past right now, he had moved on, what was important now was fulfilling the clients wishes. He didn't even stop to think about how the man knew about his previous occupation regarding the Port Mafia, despite the fact that all that information was supposed to have been wiped when he joined the Agency.
The man ran back at him again at full speed, forcing Dazai to swiftly move to the side. The man made a fast recovery, swiping a knife at Dazais face. Dazai leaned back, narrowly missing the knife. Dazai quickly regained his footing, and delivered a harsh punch to the man's face. The man fell backwards and landed on the floor. The knife having fallen out of his hands and sliding across the floor a few feet away from him, out of reach. Before he had a chance to get up, a foot was harshly pressed into his stomach, pushing out any air that was in there. The man almost went limp, his head falling back and hitting the floor, causing pain to erupt through him. He looked up to see the towering figure of Dazai, confidently but calmly staring down at him.
"Well it seems I won that game." Dazai said in a cheerful tone. Looking over, Dazai was able to see that Kunikida and Atsushi had also finished off their opponent, evidenced by the fact the man was laying face down on the floor with blood pooling down his back and onto the concrete floor.
"Nice job Atsushi!" Dazai called out.
"Thanks." Came the quiet reply from Atsushi, though he sounded more confident than before.
"I helped as well, you know!" An Angry Kunikida said as he glared at Dazai while pushing up his glasses. However, he couldn't remain mad as their job had been finished, and the perpetrators had been caught.
But just when they thought it was all over, they realised there was one thing they had forgotten. The man who still stood behind the door frame. Almost as if he had heard their thoughts, the man emerged from the door and stood, clear as day in front of them all.
Dazai felt his breath hitch as he stared breathlessly at the man before him. No… no no no this wasn't right. He was dead. He had died in Dazais arms. Dazai had seen the blood, watched as the life drained from his eyes and felt as his body had grown limp. He had sat by the mans grave. So how was that very same man standing before him now, with an equally shocked look on his face. Dazai somehow found the strength to utter one single word.
"O-Od… Odasaku?..."
I know! I'm sorry for the cliffhanger, but I promise the next chapter will be uploaded shortly! Plz review and let me know what you think of the story so far!
