Gemma now knew that Kaidan was someone she once loved, but how could she get those feelings back when she didn't remember him? He was handsome, caring and kind, but that isn't enough to just jump back into whatever it was they once had.
Her biotic training had gone down the drain lately, she didn't feel pushed enough. Her trainer tried his best, but he was struggling to handle her pure biotic power, even with the years of training he's had. She sat in her training room, holding her legs close to her chest as she let the tears fall.
"Hey, blue," Vega calls as he walks through the door from across the gym room. He looks at the equipment before making his way to her. "What's wrong?"
"Blue?" Gemma asks as she wipes her tears away and stands up, pulling her shirt down since it had creased into her stomach.
"It's the nickname I had for you," he explains and he crosses his arms over his chest. "You're gonna tell me what's wrong, blue?" Gemma smiles as she looks down at her hands.
"My training isn't going well. My trainer can't handle my biotics and they are lashing out at random times." She felt the cold shiver down her spine again, Vega flinched when her eyes sparkled blue for a second. "Sorry, I know it freaks people out," she says, rubbing her eyes.
"It's all good. We used to train together," he points out.
Gemma nods, "yeah. Kaidan said we did," she replies. Vega decides to surprise her just as he used to. Throwing a punch towards her face that gets blocked by the barrier of her biotics. They deplete when he finally lowers his fist. "Why did you do that?"
"I used to do it all the time. Keep your reflexes well-practised. Let's train," he says walking towards the large blue mat on the floor. Gemma hesitates, but her feet force her to follow. "Don't worry, blue. You won't hurt me," he chuckles.
They both circle each other before Gemma goes first and throws the first punch, it's easily blocked. Vega kicks her feet out from under her, she is caught by her biotics. "Don't rely on them!" he shouts. Gemma get's her balance back and spins on her heel, throwing a punch into his cheek.
"I don't mean to!" she argues defensively. Vega throws a few punches from each direction, she does each one. A blue barrier appeared above her arms as she blocked them.
"You do. Your biotics don't control you, you control them!" he says as he kicks her feet out again. This time she falls with a thud to the ground. "See, you're scared of getting hurt," he explains as he pulls her back up. Gemma rubs her back and shakes her head.
"That's not true," she mutters. Vega throws a punch in her face, it's blocked yet again by her barrier.
"Close your eyes," he sternly says. Gemma does it, but she nearly squints to see what he'll do. Vega pulls both her hands up to cover her eyes, she follows his lead and stands straight with both hands covering her face. "Ready?"
"What- ow!" she yells as she feels his fist connect with her cheek. Her skin broke and it slowly started to bleed. Gemma drops her hands to her cheek, rubbing it as she hissed in pain. "Why?!" she shouts.
"To prove my point. You only let your biotics react because you are scared of being hurt. Don't expect it to always happen and you will fight better with both your biotics and body.`` Vega walked over to look at the damage done, it had already started to slowly turn blue over her cheek. "You'll be okay," he smiles.
Gemma almost fears him for a second, a memory flashed into her mind. The time she and Jame fought when she was hurt. Why was she hurt? She couldn't remember. "Did we fight once when I was recovering from a memory?" Vega quickly looks up at her.
"Uh.. yeah. Your leg got hurt on a mission and you'd not trained for a couple of weeks. I helped you get back into it. You remember that?" Gemma nods, massaging her cheek as she turns to grab her gym gear.
"Not all of it. I do remember telling you to go gentle on me," she replies. They both leave the gym and head towards the mess hall for some lunch. Most of the crew stayed there, the Alliance couldn't let anyone leave until the full facts of what happened on the Crucible was explained.
"It's a start," he comments. Gemma nods, hopefully, her memories will slowly start to return at this point. "There was actually a reason I came to talk to you," James says as they both walk through the blue double doors of the mess. Garrus, Tali and Cortez were already eating, speaking quietly amongst themselves.
They both grabbed a tray of food and sat in the far corner. Gemma had piled her plate high, the extent of her training made her so hungry all the time, Vega only chuckled as he looked at his own, half-full tray and the petite frame of Gemma. "What about?" she asks, shovelling a fork full of mashed potatoes into her mouth.
"Do you have any memory of the Drell, Thane?" Gemma looked up at him, cup stopped just short of her lips. She didn't remember him, but the name rang something deep inside her.
"I'm not sure..." She puts her cup down on the steel table. "The name is very familiar to me, but I can't pinpoint why. I did see him though, he's the one with Keprel's right?" Gemma remembered all the extensive research she did on other species as a kid. The Drell fascinated her the most.
"That's right. You know there is no cure for it right?" Gemma nods, eating some fried chicken as she hummed to the sweet flavours. "Well, he was once actually cured... by you."
Gemma paused, dropping her chicken into her potatoes. "Wait... what?" she hisses in a low tone. Vega nods, only confusing her more.
"To cut it short. He got into a fight protecting you, Shepard and the crew. Even the Salarian councillor was being protected by him," Vega points out, Gemma's jaw drops open. "He was very sick at that point but was able to stop the assassin from killing any of you, though it was at the cost of his own life."
"What happened after?" she asks, now on the edge of her seat.
"You fell by his side and held him as you cried. Shepard said your biotics activated and engulfed you both. Soon, Thane wakes up and while I'm not good with technical terms, the docs told him ``your biotics had... killed the Keprel disease."
"No way," Gemma gasps. She looks down at her hands, "I had no idea my biotics could do that." She then quickly looks back up again. "But why has it come back again?"
"He got hurt on Earth, the disease came back. He needs you, Gemma. You're the only one that could save him." Gemma panicked. What if she couldn't do it again?
"How? I can't remember how I did it the first time." Vega smiles, getting up from his seat and pulling her up with him.
"You didn't the first time either. You didn't even know you did it until it was over. Let's just go and see him." Gemma nods, she feels scared. She wanted to save Thane, but if she couldn't then the anxiety that she was the cause of his death was hard on her mind.
Thane lay bare-chested in his bed, his breathing was becoming more and more painful with each gasp he tried to take with the breathing mask on his face. He was fearful of leaving this world too early. He was also not on Kahje, he didn't even know what had become of his home since the war.
Kolyat stood by his side, praying silently to himself. He looks up when there is a knock at the door and Vega pulls Gemma in before quickly leaving again. Gemma tries to stop him, but he is already gone and she was left alone in the room with two Drell she couldn't remember.
"Lieutenant Gemma," Kolyat says in his cold vibrating voice. Gemma turns around to look at him, her eyes quickly shifting to Thane. "I know you do not remember myself or my father. I am Kolyat Krios, this is Thane Krios. I am sure Mr Vega filed you in on what is expected of you. Please do not feel pressured," he tries to warmly say.
Gemma nods and shuffles across the floor towards Thane's bed. He hears her and opens his eyes, the first time he'd seen her in weeks. He smiles under his mask. "Siha," he mouths. Gemma looks up to Kolyat.
"What did he say?" Kolyat moves to the other side of the bed, holding his father's hand as he looks at her.
"The medication might have forced him to forget about your memory issue. He will say things you won't remember, but trust me, they are very true." Kolyat pulls his father's breather down, Thane coughs, wiping the blood from his lips.
"Siha," he croaks. Gemma almost faints. Siha?! she screams in her mind. "I've missed you," he smiles.
"What... Siha?" Kolyat closes his eyes. He hoped Gemma didn't become scared and leave. Thane held his hand out to her, she felt bad not to accept it. He let her lay her hand in his before closing it as tightly as he could.
"I have missed you, SIha," he pauses to cough. "My time is nearing the end, it was an honour to fight by your side." Gemma felt tears falling down her cheeks, she had to remember him.
"You don't know that, you can't die yet," she cries. Thane only smiles, he looks back towards the ceiling as he lets the memory overtake him.
"She stares at me, tear-stained and sad. An argument earlier left those stains. The air was warm as the lake flowed by our side. We both falter, looking into one's eyes. My hand falls to her cheek. Siha, she was a great Siha. Our lips touched, she was warm and scented with cherry." He finally closes his eyes as the memory ends. Gemma stepped back, she kissed him? Even Kolyat looked shocked.
Her biotics reacted as the memory ended, they almost forced the memory to her as a human would remember it. She was Thane's Siha, his best friend. She did save him, she loved him and couldn't bear to see life without him. Gemma quickly moves back to his side, forcing her biotics to work on him.
Thane closes his eyes, his breathing slowing as the heart monitor starts to trumpet a warning. "No, Thane. Please, I remember!" Gemma cries as her biotics turns from light to dark blue and purple as she forces them to engulf his body. Kolyat rushes from the room to get the doctor as the alarms blare around them.
"Thane!" Gemma screams, the sweat forming on her head as she leans both her hands on his chest. Her biotics unleash a small nova from Thane's body as the medical equipment flies across the room and into the wall. Gemma gasps for air, catching her breath as the room turns back to its mutual white colour.
"Siha?" a voice croaks.
