The fairgrounds were dark, the train ran by the fairgrounds right when the sun set, so this was the perfect time to jump off the train, and get ready for the team event. They were dressed in the same dark clothing they always wore, but this time they were carrying weapons, that had nerve darts in them that simulated actually being shot.
"Alright. Four and I are going to be your team captains. We'll pick teams, then you'll take your team flag." Eric paused and held up a glow in the dark flag. "And go to your side. You'll have only five minutes to confer with your team before the game begins. Team that wins gets the most points. The ones that manage to capture the flag, get extra." He looked at Four. "Flip a coin, call it."
Four took a coin from his pocket and flipped it. "Heads." He called while it was in the air. He lifted his hand, and it was heads. "I go first." He said and looked at the recruits. "Bella." He called on her first, and she went to his side.
"Andrew." Eric said, his face impassive.
"Jasper."
Eric made a hmph sound. "Christina." That shocked Four.
"Tris." Four called, and Tris joined his side.
Four and Eric went back and forward, until they had all their players. They went to their sides, to talk about strategy.
"Alright, how are we going to do this?" Four asked, crossing his arms.
Bella looked around, searching the fairgrounds briefly. "Tris, get up high, see if you can find where they're taking their flag. The rest of us, split into small teams, we'll flank the left and right sides. Stay low and remember to take your safety off." She said and looked at Al, who looked guilty.
Tris trotted away, taking to the tallest thing she could find, which was the Ferris wheel, to look out to see where Eric's team was taking the flag.
Four listened quietly as Bella explained the game plan, and everyone seemed to understand and follow.
Tris came trotting back a couple minutes later. "Their flag is in that building over there." She indicated. "Guarded by two."
Bella nodded. "Alright, Tris, you and Will get to the tower to retrieve the flag. The rest of us will cover or distract." She said and then the sound of a gun firing in the air was the signal that the game was on.
Bella and Jasper worked as a unit, moving through the grounds in a military fashion. Four was with Molly, and Nikki. Jessica and Rob worked together to flank the right side, with Lynn and Elaine.
The darkness gave cover to them as they moved in the night picking off each other on the other team. Bella and Jasper used hand signals so they wouldn't make a sound as they picked off the others. The cries of the recruits as the nerve dart hit them, sending shockwaves of pain through them, was like a orchestra.
Bella saw Peter duck behind a shipping container, and so she filed down and around the other side, signaling to Jasper to take fire, while she got the jump on Peter. She shot Peter in the back as soon as Peter popped up to shoot back at Jasper, and Peter growled in pain, as he fell to his knees. Bella only smirked, moving past Peter, and now she was flanking from the opposite side of Jasper. When Tris and Will ran out on the balcony above waving Eric's team flag, Bella smiled and cheered. Peter raised his gun to shoot at her, but Four shot him again.
"Game's over Peter." Four reminded him and then he looked at Bella and gave a little nod. He was impressed with Bella's leadership. The plan was executed perfectly.
Eric was impressed, he wanted to smile and go to her and kiss her, congratulating her on a good victory. He knew that the plan was hers, and that Tris and Will getting that flag, was her way of boosting their points.
Back in Dauntless, Bella waited until everyone else was distracted to slip into Eric's room. She lay back on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. Tonight, had been a good victory, especially for Tris. She was eager to see where that put her on the board. She closed her eyes, just resting her eyes, but didn't realize that she was sleepy. Soon, she dozed off, thinking about what was next.
Eric walked in his room, and sighed. He hated paperwork. He rotated his shoulder a little, the weakness and stiffness still bothered him. His chest was almost completely healed from being shot. He glanced over at his bed and saw Bella laying there on his bed, sleeping. He smiled, and unhooked his sidearm, and palm pilot and set it on his dresser. He went over to the bed and he lay bedside her, reaching for her gently, and pulling her against him. She snuggled in close to him, and he kissed the top of her head. His heart was so full and happy, seeing her like this on his bed. He wanted so badly to hold her every night, and wake up to her every morning. She must have been really tired if she was sleeping this good. He lay there for a while, before he decided to get up and shower. His shoulder bothered him. He carefully got back up, and then noticed her boots on. He smiled again, shaking his head, and then he eased her boots off. Her pants were rolled up, which he assumed was because the top of her boots were bigger at the top and recruits would roll their pants to keep their boots from rubbing them too much. He saw the tattoo on her ankle above her sock line. He studied it and then frowned. Divergent. He thought to himself. He looked back up at her sleeping face. He would have known if she was Divergent. He was good at pinpointing potential Divergent.
He leaned up, studying her still. She had this tattoo, which meant, she knew what she was. Which means, Tori told her about her brother, George. He ran a hand through his hair, and then he closed his eyes. He wasn't sure what to say about it. Did he confront her about it? Or let her come to him. He went to the bathroom and pulled his shirt off. He looked up in the mirror, looking at his chest, where Max had shot him in their struggle. It would always be his own reminder on what he would do for her. He loved her and realized he would do anything for her. Jeanine wanted to make sure Divergents never got the chance to rise up. They threatened her ideal of a harmonized faction system, but she was also planning on eradicating Abnegation at the end of round one. He blew out a breath and then started the shower, taking the rest of his clothes off and stepping into the hot steam.
His thoughts circled back around to Bella, and her tattoo on her ankle. Maybe she just thought the tattoo looked cool, but then again it could have been Tori influencing her. In the end, it didn't matter what she was. He loved her, and would protect her.
Bella heard the shower kick on and she woke up, sitting up and looking around. She stood, realizing her boots weren't on and smiled. Eric was sweet. She went to the bathroom, and leaned against the doorframe. When he turned, his eyes landed on her and he smiled at her. "Hey there." She spoke.
"Do you want to join me?" Eric asked, running his hand through his hair, brushing it up out of his face.
Bella pulled her shirt off over her head, and then reached up and unzipped her bra, and let it fall to the floor, her breasts springing free. Her milky skin was bright compared to the tattoo on her side of her yin and yang tree. She wiggled her hips as she unfastened her pants and pulled them down to her ankles.
Eric watched her strip in front of him, and it was arousing, he smiled as he watched her tease him before she stepped forward, walking into the shower with him. She pressed against him as the hot water fell around them. She tipped up, her lips connecting with his. His hands came up, running up her sides sending shivers through her. The kiss was light at first, then it turned into more, as he moved her against the shower wall, her legs going around his waist, as he drove into her hard and fast. They moaned together as they pushed each other. The furious passion they shared was like a building fire inside. An explosion ready to happen. Bella moaned against his mouth as her body shuddered and her body gave way, and the tension released. She clung around him as he pushed inside her deep, releasing as well. They came to a stop, their breathing heavy from the exertion, but it was worth it. They stared into each other's eyes.
Bella smiled. "I love you." She murmured.
Eric kissed her softly. "I love you too." He said and let her slide down to her feet. He shut off the water, before getting out and grabbing towels. He dried her off, getting a giggle out of her. They moved to his room, where he got in bed with her, and pulled the blankets up over them as they snuggled together. They were quiet for a while, and Eric thought about whether he should bring up her tattoo and talk to her about Divergents, or if… he should just wait.
"Tonight, was pretty fun actually." Bella broke the silence.
"Hmm?"
"Getting to shoot Peter." Bella said with a small laugh. "It was a break from normal training. Is that something you do every year with recruits?"
Eric smiled. "Sometimes. Really depends. This year is a little different than most. With Max gone, I'm deciding to postpone a second round."
Bella frowned and sat up. "What?"
"Yeah, I don't really think it's necessary."
"Isn't it tradition though?"
"Not everything that we've done in the past, should be continued in the future." Eric said and reached up and brushed her hair back out of her face, caressing her cheek. "Bella…"
Bella stared down at him, seeing the serious look in his eye. "What?"
"There are a lot of things I want to talk to you about."
"You can talk to me about anything Eric, you know how I feel about you."
Eric nodded. "You can tell me anything too. You can always trust me."
Bella swallowed and nodded. "I know. I do trust you." She said, and her heart clenched in her chest.
Eric wasn't sure she realized that she wasn't sure. "Bella… baby, you don't." He sighed and then sat up, and then grabbed her hands in his. "It's okay. I understand that I… haven't made it easy on you or the other recruits. I've done a lot of bad things and I- "
"Eric, I do love you. I've never felt this way about anyone before."
"I feel the same. I love you so much Bella. Which is why I have to tell you some of the things I've done. Because I want you to know that it's in my past."
Bella nodded. "You don't have to tell me. I've told you that it doesn't matter to me."
"Yes, but it matters to me." Eric said, his steel eyes still looking at her seriously. "Bella, I've killed… a lot of people."
Bella knew that he had killed before, and that he would have to again, and she understood. "I know that."
"You don't know what kind of people I've had to kill." Eric said.
Bella shook her head. "Does it matter?"
"I saw your tattoo… on your ankle." Eric finally said, his own heart rate speeding up.
Bella blinked a few things. "W-what?"
"Are you Divergent?" Eric asked.
Bella swallowed and looked away. "Um."
"It's okay if you are." Eric said softly. "I don't care if you are Bella. I love you. I will do anything and everything to protect you."
Bella looked back at him. "You will?"
"Of course. Did you think I would… have to kill you?"
"I don't know what I thought. I didn't know…. what to think about being Divergent. I just… I don't know."
Eric leaned forward and kissed her softly. "Bella, I have killed a lot of Divergents at the orders of Jeanine. She doesn't want Divergents to ever get the chance to challenge the faction system."
"How do we challenge the system?"
"You can't conform. It means that you have the potential to question what's going on. And what's going on is, Jeanine wants control of it all. She doesn't think that Abnegation should be the decision makers. She thinks Erudite is superior, and she will throw a coup, soon." He explained.
Bella shook her head, frowning. "When?"
"After the final round. It's important you know, because the injections you will receive at the end of the round, puts you in a simulation, except, it doesn't work on Divergents. It's her way of flushing Divergents out, once and for all. The simulation that all of Dauntless will be in, Jeanine will use it to go into Abnegation and take them all out."
Bella's mouth dropped open. "Are you serious?"
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you tell me about this?"
Eric sighed. "I don't want you in the middle of this. I can handle it."
"But I want to help, Eric, let me help."
"You'll have a target on you. I can't do that to you Bella, baby I wish that I could stop what Jeanine is planning, but I can't. She's the one that had me sent to kill Max." Eric leaned in, his mouth brushing hers softly.
Bella sighed. "Eric, you can get hurt."
"I know. It comes with the territory. I don't want to lose you."
"I know. I don't want to lose you too." Bella said, and leaned her forehead to his. "Please, don't keep me in the dark."
Eric nodded. "I won't." He said and kissed her again.
