Writer's note: Thank you Munzke, Goddess, delia, Karina, Roxhall, and Navywife for your reviews! My mother-in-law has left to go home, and so I can focus now on writing more. I apologize for all the delays. Hope everyone is having a great week! It's Tuesday and really rainy here, but sometimes rain is beautiful, even with darkened skies. The loss of Tris was a big hit, she was always going to die from the start of the story. I had that already built into my outline, I'm sorry for the huge loss. *frowns* There is some necessary growth to happen over the next couple chapters, and I hope that it becomes clear soon. I appreciate all of you. I love to write stories, and I'm glad that you all love to read them! Don't forget to follow, favorite, and review! I'll try to get you a double chapter today, chapter 14 is already being worked on. See everyone there! *smiles*
Bella sat on her bunk, Jasper next to her with Christina and Will on the other side of her. Jasper was still distraught. It was clear that he had loved her so much. She felt numb inside. She couldn't believe that Tris was really gone. Her best friend since they could barely walk. It didn't seem like it was real.
Four walked in, Caius and Maria with him. His face serious was he looked around the room. "Everyone, line up." He said, his voice firm.
Bella got to her feet and then her and Will helped Jasper get to his feet, and they lined up as instructed.
"I've already questioned Dauntless born. I'll take you back one by one." He said, his voice clipped as he spoke. He pulled his palm pilot from his hip and looked at it, reading something briefly. "Bella. Come with me." He called on her first.
Bella glanced to Christina, before she stepped from Jasper's side and followed Four out of the sleeping quarters.
They went to a supply room, and he closed the door behind them. It was a large closet, bigger than a normal broom closet, and it had a sink in there as well. He turned and looked at her. "How are you holding up?" He asked, his voice soft.
Bella nodded. "Um. I'm trying to not think about it, Jasper is taking it really hard."
"I saw." Four said and sighed. "I'm sorry."
"Thanks."
Four was quiet a moment. "Where were you last night?"
"What do you mean?"
Four swallowed. "When I first saw Jasper and Christina, I asked where you were because I knew you and Tris were really close. Christina didn't know where you were, and you weren't in your bunk."
"Training last night after the capture the flag." Bella said.
"Christina said that you still weren't in your bunk around 1." Four said.
Bella shook her head. "I have a hard time sleeping. Sometimes I go for a run when I'm restless."
Four nodded. "Bella… I need you to tell me the truth. It could help us figure out what happened to her."
Bella frowned. "Four, I- "
"It's okay to tell me."
Bella studied Four a minute and sighed. "I was running. I ran to the fairgrounds and back. I had a lot on my mind, and I had to run it off. When I got back, I worked on some training in the training room, and when I got back to my own bunk, I was tired. I don't even remember what time it was." She lied more, hoping that Four would buy it.
Four was quiet for a while. "You didn't see Tris?"
"No. I didn't." Bella said.
Four shook his head. "You don't know what time it was at all?"
"I don't."
"Bella…"
"You don't believe me." Bella said and frowned. "Four, I would never hurt Tris, she was like my sister to me. Why aren't you questioning Peter? Or James? They are the big bullies."
Four nodded. "You're right, you don't have a motive to hurt Tris and I know you didn't. She was raped Bella…"
Bella's mouth dropped open. "Does… does Jasper know?"
"Yes." Four said with a nod.
Bella's eyes watered and she shook a little. She was angry but she also hurt, there were no words to explain all the emotions she was feeling right now.
Four reached out for her and pulled her against him. "Bella…" He murmured. "I'll figure out who did this."
"Peter, it… it has to be Peter."
"Why do you say that?" Four asked as he leaned away. He knew that Peter was aggressive.
"Because he was working…" she trailed off. She wouldn't be able to explain how she knew.
"What?" Four asked, genuinely confused.
Bella shook her head. "I don't know. I know that he… him and Lukas were the ones that attacked me in the shower and tried… to… so it just has to be Peter."
Four thought about it. "Maybe." He murmured. "I'll question him. For now, just make sure you're not alone ever, and be sure to be in your bunk at lights out. Taking runs at night on the grounds isn't a good idea if you're a target at all."
"Why would I be a target?" Bella asked. "Why was Tris even a target?"
Four swallowed. "Maybe because she was special. Maybe because you're special."
"How am I special?"
"You just are."
Bella shook her head. "No, Four, tell me. What makes you think I'm special?"
Four studied her. "You know why you're special."
Bella frowned. "I don't understand. I'm not a fucking mind reader."
Four didn't want to say it out loud because he didn't want it to be true, not for her. He already struggled with himself, and Tris could have been a targeted attack because of what she was, but once he said it, he couldn't unsay it. "You're top Dauntless." He finally said. "You're dominating the others, and I'm not going to be surprised if you come out as number one at the end of this round. That is why you're special."
Bella was quiet a moment. She looked away, and thought about why she was dominating. She was Divergent, not just Dauntless. That gave her an edge that she didn't even want at this point. "Well, I'm just being me."
"Exactly." Four said, and then looked at his watch. "Go ahead and go back. I… need to finish questioning the others. I promise you I'll find out who did this."
"Sure." Bella said and she left, not looking back at Four. She went to the sleeping quarters and returned to where Jasper, Will, and Christina was. Al was looking a little pale, and she worried about him, but right now, she was worried about the line of questioning. She felt like Four knew more than he was letting on.
"How was it?" Christina asked in a low voice.
Bella nodded. "Just typical questions. Did I hear or see anything. Why wasn't I in my bunk and all that."
Jasper looked at her then. "You weren't in your bunk?"
"No. I was running. I went for a run to the fair grounds and back. When I got back, everyone else was sleeping. I was so tired; I didn't even notice Tris missing."
Jasper sighed, closing his eyes. He had hoped that maybe she knew something more. "Okay."
The questioning took up most of the day and Bella felt like they got nowhere. There was no training for the day, so Bella, Christina, Will, and Jasper went to the bazar. Jasper really wanted a drink, just to numb some of the pain. Will and Christina disappeared once they got to the bar, and Bella stayed by Jasper's side. She didn't want to leave him alone at all.
"Bella, they won't find who did this." Jasper said, his voice sullen.
"You can't think like that. I told Four to look at Peter. Peter and Lukas tried to… take advantage of me in the shower a while back before Lukas died and I think that Peter is good for it." Bella said and lifted her drink.
Jasper shook his head. "Peter was in his bunk all night."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, after the fairgrounds, and he got popped more than once, he hit the bunk before any of us did." Jasper relayed. "I've gone over it so many times in my head and I just don't understand. Did it happen outside the sleeping quarters or was she dragged away? Why wouldn't I hear anything?" He said and knocked back another drink.
"Maybe she was clearing her head too." Bella said.
Jasper sighed. "I told her I loved her yesterday, and she didn't say it back."
"Oh Jazz…"
"I don't know if I scared her with my words or what… maybe I shouldn't have said anything."
"No, she loved you too. You could tell how much she loved you."
Jasper shook his head. "Maybe, or maybe she was just sticking to me because… I'm strong and-"
"Tris wasn't that type of person. She loved you Jazz, she did." Bella assured him.
Jasper looked over at her. "You're right." He sighed and knocked another drink back when the bartender filled his glass. "She was afraid to get intimate."
"You guys never… you know."
"No, and part of it I believe is that she didn't want to be one of those girls. Though I think it's silly to think that sex somehow changes you as a person. But she thought that way. I didn't care. I would wait until the ends of the earth for her." Jasper said, his voice slurring a little now.
Bella nodded. "She was more modest." She said. "She was spunky though. Back in Abnegation, she helped me put frogs in our teacher's drawer as a prank." She said with a little laugh. "She stuck to me like glue. We were best friends. I can't remember a time I wasn't by her side and her by mine."
Jasper smiled a little. "Yeah, you two are close like sisters. She would say that you were made for Dauntless and that she was glad she chose to come here because if she hadn't, she was afraid you would have stayed in Abnegation forever."
"I don't know. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do." Bella said, recalling the day of the choosing. "When Edward swapped to Erudite and then Caleb went to Erudite, it just seemed so surreal. Tris chose before me and well, I couldn't think of a reason to stay. I loved my parents, don't get me wrong, but Abnegation is stuffy. I don't think I ever felt like I fit in there."
"Same with Amity." Jasper said. "I was searching for adventure, and it would get me in trouble sometimes back on the farms. But Dauntless… I thought that maybe this would be a better start. Maybe if I stayed, I wouldn't be going through heartbreak right now."
"Everything happens for a reason." Bella said. "We choose the paths that we want to take. What happens on those paths is up to us to either break or make it. I love Tris… I'll never feel the same without her. I want to curl up into a ball and just cry until there is nothing left of me to cry. I'm also angry. I'm so fucking angry at whoever did this, that I believe I could kill them for it. But it's not going to change what has happened, and if we're going to beat this thing and get through Dauntless alive, then we need to keep going. Keep Tris close to us the whole time and let her be the star that guides us through this dark times, because I know, without a doubt, that Tris would not want us to sit here and dwell and keep dwelling and asking all these what-ifs, when we could be fighting."
Jasper studied Bella. She was wise, wiser beyond her years and she was right. Every bit of him hurt to lose Tris, but Bella was right. They had to keep fighting, because if he gave up right now, then what would that mean to Tris? "You're right." He said, tears coming to his eyes. "We have to fight."
Bella smiled a little and leaned over and kissed his cheek, before reaching a hand up and swiping tears away. "We're in this together, until the very end. No pulling punches and no giving up. We fight to be Dauntless and stay Dauntless, even when everyone else wants to knock us down."
Jasper nodded. "We will be Dauntless."
"We are Dauntless." Bella corrected and grabbed his hand and clutched it in his. "Forever."
"Forever." Jasper said with a nod. He looked down at their hands, and he brushed his thumb over her hand. "Bella… I have to tell you something."
"Not here." Bella said. "Too many people to hear." She said. "But I know what you're going to say…"
Jasper looked at her, shocked. "You do?"
"I do." Bella said with a nod. She finished her drink, setting the glass on the bar, before getting up from her spot. "Come on. Let's get tattoos." She said and Jasper followed her. She knew that Tori was working tonight, and she wanted to get a tattoo in remembrance of Tris anyways, and felt like Jasper needed one too. Plus, she could talk freely there in front of Tori.
Tori looked up at Bella and Jasper when they entered. "Hey guys. I'm so sorry to hear about Tris."
Bella smiled a little. "Thanks. Which is why we're here. Remembrance tats."
"Great idea." Tori said and motioned to the back.
Bella and Jasper went into the room, and Tori shut the door behind them. "I want to get a tattoo of the infinity symbol, with a raven feather, and the words, you'll fly with me, wherever I go." She said and looked at Jasper and smiled.
Tori smiled. "Of course. That's beautiful. I can do that."
Bella took her shirt off, her tattoo on her side that she had of the yin and yang tree had already healed well. Her bruised ribs were healing nicely too. "I want it here." She indicated, right under her breast on the opposite side of her tattoo.
Tori studied the spot and nodded. "Yeah, I can do that. You want it big or small?"
"Big, like 8 inches or so. I want it to be noticeable. Inside the infinity symbol I want her name. I want it to be a reminder to anyone who did this, that she's part of me." Bella said.
Tori smiled. "Okay. Let's do it." She said and Bella sat down in the chair. Jasper crossed his arms as he watched. He was quiet, and obviously thinking about something, but Bella let him stay quiet.
When Tori was done, Bella looked at it in the mirror that Tori had in the room. "What do you think?"
"It's perfect." Bella murmured as tears tried to spill over, but she blinked them away quick. "Thank you, Tori." She said, her voice soft. She looked at Jasper and he nodded.
"It's beautiful Bella." Jasper said and then he took off his own shirt, his muscles rippled as he did. Bella rarely saw him shirtless. He was typically wearing a tank top. Bella saw the Divergent tattoo on his right side, right below his armpit and her eyes met Tori's and she nodded. "I want a raven, on my chest, wings outstretched taking flight, her name, right along the wings." He said, his eyes capturing Bella's.
Tori nodded. "I can do that." She said as Jasper sat.
Bella was quiet, watching as Tori stenciled Jasper. "Jasper, we will stick together." She suddenly said. "Tris was more than just my best friend."
"I know." Jasper said. "She was Divergent, just like us." He said, his honey eyes staying glued with hers. "She knew what she was Bella, she knew before I knew she was."
Tori stopped tattooing. "It's true. Her aptitude test said Dauntless." She said and looked up at Bella. "I don't know who told her, but she knew when she walked into my shop. She knew about George."
Bella nodded. "Tris had a way of knowing things without letting you know she knew something. She was really good at playing like she was oblivious to things."
"Her physical strength is what stunted her." Tori said. "Her mind and how everything else she did, was Dauntless. She knew that she would have to work harder at being physical."
"She was doing better." Jasper said. "Getting stronger. I just…" he blew out a breath. "If they targeted her for being Divergent, it means that Eric knows about it. He has to. He's working for Jeanine."
Tori swallowed, and glanced at her watch. She knew that Eric would be by soon.
"Eric knew what Tris was." Bella said. "Just like he knows what I am." She said, and Jasper frowned at her. "Eric wants to help Divergents." She finished.
Jasper shook his head. "No, he had George killed, and he's killed so much more."
There was a knock at the door, and Tori looked at Bella. "Get that please." She said, and Bella nodded, and opened the door, to see Eric.
"Hey," Eric said. "Tori here?"
"Yeah." Bella said and moved to let him inside. She shut the door behind him, and then he turned to looked at her, seeing her new tattoo. Before he could say anything, she leaned up and kissed him softly. "We'll talk later, but there's more that we need to know."
Jasper wasn't sure what to say. He was just in shock and so was Eric now, not sure what to say about Bella openly kissing him in front of Tori and Jasper.
"Jasper, what I just said, I know because I love Eric, have been with Eric for a while now, and I was with Eric last night when Tris died." She explained.
Tori stopped Jasper's tattoo, so he could shift. "It's true." Tori spoke up. "Jasper, listen to Bella, don't jump to conclusions."
"I don't get it. How…"
Eric sighed. That's why she had kissed him. There was secret meeting and he just walked in on it. "I don't pretend that the past didn't happen. I killed people; I was ordered to kill. I work for Jeanine and there's a lot more that is going on, that I don't have time to explain in detail, but for now, what I can say, is Tris was not targeted because she was Divergent. She was targeted because she was rising on the board."
"What?" Jasper and Bella said at the same time.
Eric nodded. "Four interrogated everyone today. With Caius and Maria's help. While I went to Erudite to talk with Jeanine. Jeanine had no clue Tris was Divergent and I didn't say she was. She wanted Tris to stay ahead on the board. She was going to use Tris to get to Caleb, who she's using right now, for part of the plan she has in play. Caleb is worried about his sister in Dauntless, and Jeanine assured him that she would be perfectly fine, and make it out of Dauntless in one piece. Caleb is smart, incredibly so and is one of the best Erudite transfers next to Edward Cullen. She doesn't want to lose that brain of his, and so she's made promises, she obviously can't keep now, so she's in an outrage that Tris is dead." He explained in full.
Jasper shook his head. "What plan needs Tris to be alive?"
Bella swallowed. "Jeanine wants to destroy all of Abnegation."
"Why?"
"Because she thinks Erudite is superior." Tori interjected. "That's bullshit Eric, you didn't tell me this morning that- "
"I have a lot more things to handle right now, then to worry about the final rounds. Tris is dead, Tori. She's dead and I'm to blame for this. I needed to find who did this, and take care of it."
Bella blinked a few times. "You know who did it…"
Eric looked back at Bella and nodded. "I know who did it."
Jasper wanted to stand up, but he remained seated. "Who did this? Who is the pathetic being that took her away from us?"
"Al." Eric said, and his eyes looked a little sorrowful.
"No. That can't be. Al would never…" Bella said, shaking her head.
Eric shook his head. "Bella, he did it. He admitted to it. He was scared. She was rising above him on the board, and he kept falling behind, and he panicked. He saw her sitting on the catwalk by herself, and so he talked to her. Asked her if she would stop rising up the ranks, but she refused."
"No, Al has been training with us from the start. He's not that kind of guy, he wouldn't take advantage of her like that. He wouldn't…."
"I'm sorry. Bella, but it's true." Eric said softly. "I spoke to Jack Kang already. He… gave Al the truth serum. I needed to know for sure that he was the real culprit."
Bella looked at Jasper, who was stunned as well. It didn't make sense to either of them why Al would do this. "I… don't… Al…." She shook her head again.
Eric swallowed. "I'm sorry."
"What's going to happen to him?" Jasper asked, finding his own voice already.
Eric looked at Tori, and then back at Jasper and Bella. "I've already handled him. He's not in Dauntless anymore."
"He's factionless?" Jasper and Bella asked at the same time.
"No." Eric said, his steel eyes taking on a gloomy look. He hated this part of himself. He didn't to tell Bella that he had killed again, but he had. He killed Al, and Four and Caius took him off grounds to bury him with the other factionless that get buried.
Bella swallowed. "You killed him."
"Yes." Eric said, not wanting to lie at all.
"Quickly?" Jasper asked.
Eric looked at Jasper. "Yes, I don't take pleasure in killing."
"He didn't suffer." Jasper said as a statement.
"No. He didn't." Eric said.
Jasper shook his head. "His death was better than Tris'. He should be fortunate." He said and leaned back in the chair more. "He worked alone?"
"He did." Eric said and looked at Bella. She had remained silent. "Baby, please talk to me."
"I'm okay." Bella said, her dark eyes meeting his again. "I'm okay with it. Al… deserved it." She said with a nod. "He was a friend, but if he really truly was a friend, he wouldn't have done what he did."
Eric reached for her, she went to him, and he held her against him. Closing his eyes and sighing with relief that she hadn't retreated from him.
Tori looked at Jasper, then started her gun up again and started working on Jasper's tattoo. They were all quiet now, as they processed the information. When Tori was done with Jasper's tattoo, Eric sat down, pulling his own shirt off, and Tori tattooed the Divergent symbol on him, like he had promised. Bella was shocked that Eric would go that far, but it warmed her heart for his support. To take it a step farther, he got the infinity symbol tattooed above the Divergent symbol. It was plain, nothing more said about it, but the four of them knew that it was meant to honor Tris.
