Kanto Gets Loud

Chapter 34: The Undefeated Trainer (Part 2)

A few minutes later,

When Lincoln went into battle, he knew that he would have something of a challenge from facing down just one Pokemon with all six in his party. He thought that he could find some way to take down the lone Sandshrew, even if he lost a few rounds. His confidence went out the door when AJ's Sandshrew was able to take out four of his Pokemon with just one hit each. Pidgeotto was struggling to remain standing as she was Lincoln's current Pokemon, "Alright Sandshrew, use Swift!" AJ ordered with a crack of his whip. Sandshrew then fired off star like projectiles that homed in on Pidgeotto, sending the Bird Pokemon down to defeat, "And that makes five! One more and I win!" he said, as Lincoln recalled Pidgeotto.

"Thanks Pidgeotto. You did great," Lincoln said, before turning his attention to his last remaining Pokemon, Pikachu, "Alright Pikachu, it's down to you now."

"Don't worry. I got this!" Pikachu said, dashing out onto the battlefield.

"Be careful Lincoln! Electric Type moves won't work on Sandshrew!" Brock warned.

"Got it! So, we'll have to work with a combination of Quick Attack and Iron Tail," Lincoln said.

"Sandshrew, let's finish this up right! Use Mud Shot!" AJ ordered.

"On it!" Sandshrew replied, firing off Mud Shot at Pikachu.

"Pikachu, use Quick Attack and dodge!" Lincoln instructed. Pikachu rocketed across the battlefield, dodging each mud ball that was fired at him, while closing in on Sandshrew, "Alright, now use Iron Tail!" Pikachu's tail became enveloped in the metallic aura, as it swung at Sandshrew, when…

"Use Brick Break!" AJ ordered. Sandshrew leapt up into the air, dodging Iron Tail, before delivering a powerful karate chop to Pikachu's head, sending it down to defeat. Lincoln couldn't believe what was just happening, "And that's that! Win number 99!" AJ cheered.

"Pikachu! Are you alright?" Lincoln went to the Mouse Pokemon's aid.

"Y-Yeah. Sorry we couldn't win, Lincoln," Pikachu replied.

"Hey, don't worry about it. We'll just have to train harder and come up with a new strategy," Lincoln replied, still sounding disappointed about his first loss.

"If it's any consolation, you were probably the craftiest opponent I've faced so far. All of those strategies you cooked up mid battle were completely out of the norm for battling," AJ replied.

"He has a point. I would never have thought about using moves in the way you did during that battle," Samurai added.

"And I must say, you're taking your loss the way a competitor should. You're not letting the loss get to you, and you're choosing to reevaluate your battle plans," Brock added.

"And think of it this way. At least you're being a far cry from that cruel sister of yours," Misty added. Lincoln grimaced at the thought of being anything like Lynn.

"I take it this sister of his is someone bad?" Samurai asked.

"That's putting it mildly. But it's not our place to say," Brock replied.

"Well, I won't pry into this kid's personal business," AJ commented.

"Indeed," Samurai agreed.

"Thanks you guys. In any case, congrats on your win, AJ," Lincoln said.

"Thanks. That's the kind of attitude one can always respect. Too bad there aren't a lot of trainers like that," AJ replied, crossing his arms.

"I'm guessing you've had your fair share of sore losers?" Misty asked.

"Like you wouldn't believe. Some of them accused me of cheating, others coming back to demand a rematch. Had to put up with a lot of bullshit from those kinds of trainers. But you, Lincoln, are among the rare few to show some level of decency, what with admitting you got beat," AJ replied.

"I'll take that as a compliment. But one question, though - how long have you been a trainer? You certainly knew what you were doing during our battle," Lincoln asked.

"I've been at it for five whole years now. I think I was about your age," AJ replied, scratching his chin. Lincoln could only wince.

"Wow, five years' worth of experience? No wonder I got trashed so badly. I've only been a trainer for a couple of weeks now," Lincoln replied.

"A greenhorn, huh? Well, how about I show you around the gym? Maybe you can pick up something from my training methods," AJ suggested.

"You offer tours of your gym?" Lincoln asked.

"Not regularly, but I'm in a good mood at the moment. Just as long as you don't go starting any trouble," AJ replied.

"If it's not too much trouble, could I also take you up on that offer? I'd like to take some kind of lesson from this place," Samurai asked.

"The same goes for us. We'd like to see how your gym operates too," Misty said on behalf of herself and Brock.

"No problem. Just follow me," AJ said, as he went inside of the tent, followed by the others. The four trainers were greeted by an amazing sight. Several Pokemon were training hard with one another and with the various equipment scattered around the gym.

"Whoa, are all these your Pokemon?" Lincoln asked.

"Yep. Caught every one of them on my own," AJ replied, sending out his Sandshrew once again, who was awaiting orders. AJ then pointed to a large pool and diving board, "Alright Sandshrew, get up there so you can practice your water resistance training."

"Got it, chief!" Sandshrew replied, as it went over and began climbing up the diving board ladder.

"As you can see, I work my Pokemon hard to be the very best they can be in battle," AJ explained, as Sandshrew got up onto the diving board, "I also work with them to help them build a resistance to their own weaknesses. Alright Sandshrew, now dive!" AJ called.

"On it!" Sandshrew called, as it leapt off of the diving board.

"Uh, not to criticize your methods or anything, but isn't water bad for Sandshrew?" Misty asked, as Sandshrew dove into the pool with a splash.

"Ordinarily, it is. But I've been training Sandshrew for years now, so the water isn't much of a bother to it now," AJ replied, as the Mouse Pokemon resurfaced and began doing laps.

"So you train your Pokemon to build their tolerance to their individual weaknesses? How interesting," Samurai commented, tapping his chin.

"Yep. You'd be surprised how well this kind of training works against trainers who come at us with a type advantage. Of course, that's not all we do. See those devices my Pokemon are wearing?" AJ asked, referring to what his Pokemon were all wearing.

"Yeah, but what are they? I mean, I've seen them in trainer magazines before, but I can't seem to remember their name," Brock commented.

"They're Macho Braces. They help restrict the Pokemon's movements which helps them boost their stats as they regain their mobility," AJ replied, as he got a spare one from off of a crate, "Take a look for yourselves."

While the others looked at the device in amazement, Lincoln turned to AJ, "These braces don't hurt the Pokemon, do they?"

"They ain't easy to move around in, sure, but the don't actually hurt the Pokemon," AJ replied, pointing over at Sandshrew, who was doing some reps with a pair of dumbbells, while Pikachu was struggling to lift one, "Believe me when I tell you this that those Macho Braces will make your Pokemon a whole lot stronger."

"C'mon you stupid…!" Pikachu continued to struggle with lifting the one dumbbell, while looking over at Sandshrew, who was still doing reps with ease, "Sweet Arceus almighty! How heavy are these things?!"

"Apparently heavier than you can lift," Sandshrew quipped. Lincoln was trying very hard not to snicker at the sight before him.

"Interesting. Maybe I should look in to obtaining a set for myself to aid in strengthening my Pokemon," Samurai commented.

"Well, if you're looking to buy one, then lemme tell you, it ain't cheap. Hell, I'm lucky just to have gotten the number of Macho Braces I have now," AJ replied, crossing his arms.

"Hmm, maybe I should look into finding a Macho Brace for myself," Lincoln commented, as he observed a Beedrill and a Butterfree sparring nearby, "You must really push your Pokemon hard, huh?"

"Yep. I gotta be tough on them for when I start going for gym badges. After all, every member of every team has to pull their own weight after all. Doesn't mean I don't treat them respect. I may be tough, sure, but I'm not a monster," AJ replied, as he watched the two Bug Pokemon spar.

"So you train your Pokemon hard, but you don't push them too far past their limits. I can respect that," Misty commented, watching some Rattata pass a ball between them. AJ let out an amused snort.

"Yeah, if only all trainers saw it that way. I had a challenger a while back say that my training methods were too barbaric, and even tried to get my Pokemon to abandon me. I kicked his sorry ass out of here and told him never to come back," he explained.

"Meh, everyone has their own opinions," Lincoln shrugged, watching another sparring match between a Fearow and a Pidgeotto, "So, besides the Macho Braces, what else do you do for your Pokemon?"

"I'd kind of like to know that myself. Your Pokemon all look in peak physical condition. What sort of a diet do you have them on? Homemade Pokemon food?" Brock asked.

"Well, if you must know, I do use my own recipe for Pokemon Food, tailormade to each different Pokemon for the best results," AJ said, walking over to a nearby pantry, opening it up, revealing several canisters of Pokemon Food.

"Whoa, there must at least two years' worth of food in there!" Lincoln commented.

"Yep. And they're all homemade, none of that store bought crap you can find at the market," AJ replied proudly.

"And you said that each recipe is for each unique species of Pokemon?" Brock asked.

"Yep. But don't bother asking for the recipe. That's some top-secret stuff right there," AJ replied.

"Perfectly understandable. But if you have any tips on how to improve Pokemon Food, then would you be willing to share? I'm aiming to be a Pokemon Breeder, so any information like that is vital," Brock asked.

"I'll consider it," AJ replied, just as they heard a bell ringing. AJ then gave his Pokemon a stern look, "Alright you wimps, you get a fifteen minute break! Better make the most of it," he said, just as his Pokemon all collapsed from exhaustion.

"Wow, they look beat. How often do you give them breaks?" Misty asked, eying the tired Pokemon with concern.

"I set up the training schedule so that they get five breaks a day. Each one lasting only fifteen minutes. Two of them are for meals," AJ replied.

"Well, do you at least give them any free time? I'm sure they don't always train," Lincoln asked. While he wasn't criticizing AJ's training methods, he didn't like the thought of anyone going without any free time.

"Well of course I give them free time. We always take the weekends off for a little rest and relaxation. I'm not that strict," AJ replied.

"Well, that's good to hear. What do they do during their free time?"

"Training and growing stronger, what else?"

Misty, Brock, and Lincoln all felt sweat drops form on the backs of their heads, while Samurai nodded, "Nothing wrong with always wanting to improve yourself."

"My thoughts exactly. And it IS my Pokemon's free time, so I can't really butt in on what THEY want to do. Anyhow, let's move on. There's still a lot I want to show you guys," AJ replied.

Meanwhile, in Newbark Town, Johto,

"Alright, everything checks out. I think you three are ready for our little trip," Professor Elm said, looking at the three Pokemon before him. One was a green sauropod Pokemon with a big leaf on it's head, the second was a small, mammalian Pokemon with bluish fur with four red spots on it's back, and the third was a blue crocodile Pokemon with pink spikes on it's back.

"Professor, are you certain you want to take these three with you to America? After all, Pokemon aren't exactly normal in places outside the Pokemon regions," a lab assistant asked.

"I had my share of doubts too, but I'm certain that we can get a private conference room where no one will bother us," Professor Elm replied.

"Well, if you say so," the assistant replied warily.

Meanwhile, in Littleroot Town, Hoenn,

"So these American kids we're potentially going to be sponsoring are friends with the kid Professor Oak is sponsoring?" the lab assistant asked, as he and Professor Birch were looking over three Pokemon. One was a green gecko like Pokemon, the second was a little orange chicken Pokemon, and the third was a Mudkip.

"Yep. And based on what Professor Oak has told the rest of us, this Royal Woods place appears to be home to potential prodigious trainers, just like the boy he's sponsoring," Professor Birch replied.

"Well, you know what they say; Seeing is believing," the assistant replied.

Meanwhile, in Sandgem Town, Sinnoh,

"And that just about does it. All three Pokemon are in tiptop shape," a lab assistant said, as he and several other people were looking over three Pokemon. The first was a green turtle like Pokemon with a twig atop it's head. The second was an orange monkey with it's butt on fire. The third was a blue penguin Pokemon.

"Excellent. I need them to be if they're going to be potential starters for those Americans," Professor Rowan said, glancing down at the three. His stern look caused all three Pokemon to flinch and cower slightly.

"This Lincoln kid that Professor Oak talked about must be some kind of trailblazer if his friends want to try out," another assistant commented.

"Yes, well, that's assuming if they're just as studious as Lincoln," Professor Rowan replied.

Meanwhile, in Numeva Town, Unova,

"Ok, that should just about do it for the check up," Professor Juniper said, as she and an assistant were doing a check up on three Pokemon. The first appeared to be a green snake Pokemon with leaf like arms and legs, and a leaf tipped tail. The second was a little black and orange piglet Pokemon. The third was an otter like Pokemon with a seashell on its belly.

"The kids from America sound like they'll be something to keep an eye on, eh Professor?" a lab assistant questioned.

"Oh, most definitely," Professor Juniper replied.

"Well, here's to hoping that he'll come to Unova to train someday so we can meet him for ourselves," the assistant commented.

Meanwhile, in Lumiose City, Kalos,

"Simply marvelous! Everything's ready to go for my trip to the states," Professor Sycamore exclaimed, looking over three Pokemon. One was a small, mammalian rodent like Pokemon with a green helmet like head with spikes. The second was a small, yellow and orange fox Pokemon. The third was a blue frog like Pokemon with a collar of what appeared to be bubbles, "And there's just one last thing I have to do before I leave," he said, looking at the jewel-embedded bracelet on his table, "I truly hope that Lincoln appreciates this little gift and that it helps him in his quest."

Meanwhile, on Melemele Island, Alola,

"And done! Alrighty then, all I have to do now is get my plane tickets and pack my bags," Professor Kukui said, looking over at three Pokemon in his lab. The first was a beige colored owl Pokemon with a little green bowtie. The second was a black cat with a bored look on its face. The third was a blue sea-lion Pokemon. Just then, he heard someone coming downstairs. He turned to see a bulky, elderly man in tropical sumo-esque clothing, and a woman with white hair, and a jacket tied around her waist.

"Are you getting ready to head out, Kukui?" the elderly man asked.

"Yep. I just need to get my plane ticket, then I can head out in a few days. I hope it's alright that I bring these three along with me, Hala," Professor Kukui replied. Hala simply nodded.

"It's quite alright. After all, while it may be the Kahuna's job to hand out Pokemon to new trainers, it's a professor's job to sponsor them," Hala replied.

"To think that you have the possibility of sponsoring someone directly from the states," the woman replied.

"Based on what Professor Oak told me about that Lincoln kid he's sponsoring, his friends might have the potential to do equally great things," Professor Kukui replied. Hala nodded.

"Hmm. Everyone has their own path that they must follow in life."

"Too true," Professor Kukui replied.

Meanwhile, in Wedgehurst, Galar,

"So that's the gist of it, Sonia. Can I count on you to accompany me to America to evaluate these prospective trainers?" Professor Magnolia asked a tall, young woman with orangish red hair. She was wearing teal sweater, a brown overcoat, jeans and teal boots. The two of them were enjoying a cup of tea.

"Sure thing, Gran. Just let me know what else we need before we head out," Sonia replied.

"Well, we need these three to be in perfect form, obviously," Professor Magnolia replied, looking over at three Pokemon. The first was a green monkey that was banging a rock like a drum with a stick. The second was a little white rabbit Pokemon with a patch on its nose. The third was a little blue lizard like Pokemon with a fin on the top of its head.

"Not to worry, Gran. I'll make sure to bring them to the Pokemon Center for one last check up before you head to the states," Sonia replied, as they continued sipping their tea.

Meanwhile, in Vermillion City, Kanto,

"Thanks so much for sending these three over, Director," Professor Cerise said, as he spoke with an elderly man in a blue suit over a computer screen. The three Pokemon he was referring to was a green cat like Pokemon, a little red crocodile Pokemon, and a white and blue duckling Pokemon.

"You're most welcome. I do hope that these trainer applicants choose at least one of them," the elderly man replied.

"Indeed. Well, the other professors from the other regions are bringing their regional starters as well, so it may be slim pickings," Professor Cerise replied.

"True. But there is still a chance. Those three little ones are always looking forward to being chosen by a trainer," the elderly man replied.

"Well, if any of them aren't picked, I could always give them to new trainers here in Kanto," Professor Cerise offered.

"That would be more than acceptable. Thank you," the elderly man replied, before hanging up. Professor Cerise looked over at the three Pokemon, who were all playing with the three Kanto Starters he had.

"This will certainly be a most productive experience for all of us," he commented.

Just to clarify, just because the Paldean Starters are going to be included in the massive amount of starter Pokemon choices Lincoln's friends get to choose from doesn't mean that much more references to the Paldea Region will be mentioned. In addition, the poll will NOT include the Paldea Region, because I have plans to have that be AFTER Lincoln travels to all the different regions. My plans for the other regions is to have each of them happen parallel to one another, in no particular order, after the Kanto Pokemon League, meaning I could have Lincoln travel through Sinnoh, Hoenn, Unova, Johto, Alola, Galar, and Kalos, or some other combination. Furthermore, these stories will follow more to the games than the anime or manga, but they will have bits and pieces from the anime as well, such as Pokemon Sumo or Pokemon Ping Pong.

Anyhow, it's time for yet another Trivia Contest. The prize this time will be to decide what Pokemon Lincoln and friends get from the Wonder Trade on the St. Anne. I've already chosen a few for Lincoln, but any more suggestions are welcome. And to narrow it down, the Pokemon you can choose must be from one of the following types: Water, Ice, Ground, Ghost. Without further ado, here's the question:
