Chapter III: The Mansion
Part I: The Arrival
Somewhere near the The Mansion, Arkay Mountains, near Raccoon City
The thundering sound of the helicopter's rotary blades seemed to interrupt the young officer's thoughts. Memories of the events at Griffith Station flashed in his mind.
Flashback:
Experiment Room A
Griffith Station
Twenty-two years ago
He rested his left hand over his left eye and grunted in pain. As he looked at himself, he noticed that there were a number of medical syringes along with various types of medical equipment jammed into his body. He tried to move but found such a task impossible. It seemed that whatever was in those syringes had put his body under some kind of paralysis. The only body parts he could move was his head and neck. He tried looking out the glass cover but it was too foggy to make out much of anything.
The boy did not know where he was or why he was currently paralyzed to a chair. The door ahead of his container made a beeping sound.
A young blonde man with sunglasses then walked in. He was wearing a white lab coat. He stared at Alex as if he were studying him. "Good. You are finally awake. Let us check your vitals." The sound of many beeps and boops then filled the air.
Alex tried to speak but found his throat too dry to speak. A cold sensation overcame him. "W..What have you done to me?"
Dr Wesker then turned to the young boy with a cold look in his eyes. "We have rebuilt you completely using science. You are now stronger, smarter and faster than any other human boy alive. None will be able to stand against you once we call you to duty."
The young boy struggled to get out of the restraints. "Let me out of these damn things! Let me out!" He began fighting for his life.
Dr. Wesker just looked on with an emotionless look in his eyes. He looked over the chart to this right. "Vitals are normal. Sedation protocol activated."
Alex looked around in fear and desperation. No. I'm not going to sleep again. No. No. He was then rendered unconscious by the sleeping gas.
Dr. Steven Chambers then walked through the door with an expectant look on his face. He was a slender and tall man dressed in a suit and tie ensemble with a white doctors coat on. "How is Patient X doing?"
Wesker furrowed his brow and sighed. "He's responding to the stimulants well but his emotional state leave a lot to be desired in terms of results. I'm worried about controlling him."
Steven just nodded. "Just keep up the trials. This boy is the key. He is the only one who survived the early trials. Heather and James already destroyed the others. This is going to be quite the mess to clean up."
FLASBACK OVER
Alex could suddenly hear Jill's voice in his ear. It was almost like it was a memory of some kind or if she was far away. The sound of rotary blades soon came to his ears.
Jill meanwhile, kept trying to shake him awake. "Hey! Alex! Can you hear me? Alex!"
Alex slowly started to open his eyes only to see Jill and the other's standing over him. She was holding his face in her hands. He was laying on the floor of the chopper. He blinked his eyes for a moment.
Jill and the others suddenly came into view.
"J-Jill?"
Jill felt herself relax for a moment. Her heartbeat calmed down for a minute. He's alright. He's okay. She then hugged him. "Thank goodness you're alright."
Chris then eyed Alex with a worried look in his eyes. "You sure you're okay there Ferraria? You collapsed on the floor of the chopper all of a sudden. We've been trying to wake you up for the past thirty minutes."
Jill then helped Alex to his feet, and helped him sit down on the seat. "What happened?"
Alex shook his head. "I am not sure. I was looking out at the moon and then I had some sort of dream. The next thing I know I am on the floor."
Rebecca then leaned in and grabbed his face in her hands checking for any sorts of cuts or bruises. "No cuts or bruises." She then opened up her med-bag and pulled out a flashlight. "Focus your eyes on my flashlight."
Alex did as she asked and followed the flashlight with his eyes. Rebecca turned to Captain Wesker and turned it off with a click of the small switch. "He's fine. No sign of a concussion."
Captain Wesker tapped his chin thoughtfully. "Perhaps a memory of some kind was triggered. Do you want to hang back on this one Officer Ferraria?"
Alex turned to his commanding officer and shook his head. "No sir. I can still do this mission. Just give me a moment to get my bearings."
Captain Wesker just nodded without emotion and took a drag of his cigarette. "As you wish." Jill eyed him worriedly and rested a hand on his shoulder. "Are you sure about this partner? You don't look good."
Alex flashed her a toothy smile. "I'm sure Jill. Don't worry. I'm good to go."
Jill wasn't convinced and frowned but nodded along.
Captain Wesker then stood up from his seat. "Alright! Let's break up into teams! Everyone keep your comms on and stay close! "
All of them gave him a nod. "Yes sir!"
Jill then helped Alexander to his feet. "You okay to walk?"
Alex nodded. "I'm fine."
About thirty minutes later
Alex, Rebecca and Jill were patrolling on one side of the mansion with sidearms drawn.
The flashlights quickly lit up the pathway ahead. The three of them came across a set of doors that seemed to be padlocked with a lock.
Alex hissed. 'Damn it. I don't think we are getting through there."
Jill then placed a hand on his shoulder with a smile on her face. " Take it easy, partner. I've got just the thing for that lock." She then reached in her pocket and pulled out a lockpick.
Alex raised an eyebrow at her. "Wait a minute! Where in the world did you learn how to pick a lock?"
Jill then winked at him. "I know a few tricks." She then knelt in front of the lock and began picking it.
Soon, it opened and all the chains fell to the ground. She turned around to glance at both Alex and Rebecca with a smirk present on her face. "See?"
Alex and Rebecca glanced at one another and shrugged.
Chris and the others then caught up with the trio. "What'd you guys find?"
Alex then hooked his flashlight under the underside of his gun and flicked it on. He then aimed it at the open doorway. "A way in."
Chris just gave him a nod. As the team walked in, they noticed that the main room was lit by candles.
Chris let out a gasp. "Wow look at this place! It's a mansion!"
Captain Albert Wesker then took a look around. "Hmm this place will take time to search." He then turned to Barry. "Officer Burton. Head back to the chopper immediately. Guard it. I don't want to lose our only means of escape."
Barry Burton gave the blonde a salute. "Got it Captain." Before taking his leave, he walked over to Alex and handed over the Remington .55 caliber revolver he had on him as a backup.
Alex then met his eyes. "You are giving me one of yours?"
Barry grinned at him and put a hand on her shoulder. "Just in case. You don't know what you are going to run into here."
Alex then gave the revolver with a wooden finish a good look over. It looked finely made and had an oiled oak wood finish. He then put in his spare holster. "I appreciate it."
Barry nodded. "Not a problem kid."
He then walked over to Jill, rummaged in his pocket, pulled out a golden lockpick, and placed it in her hand. "I figured you could use this since you are the master of lockpicking after all."
Jill smirked at him. "Appreciate it."
Barry nodded. "Keep our new guy safe. I'd hate to have to file the paperwork for a replacement."
Jill just nodded with a sly grin elbowing Alex in the shoulder. "Oh. Don't worry. I'll keep him safe."
Barry gave her a nod and walked out of the door.
Captain Wesker then turned to Jill and Alex. "Okay! Time to split up and figure out what happened to Bravo Squad! Officers Valentine and Ferraria…you two partner up and see what you can find. Report anything you find on your radios."
Both Jill and Alex gave him a nod and saluted. "Yes sir!"
They then walked off.
Captain Albert Wesker then turned to Chris and Rebecca. "Officers Chambers and Redfield…you two are to do the same! Stay together and report anything you find!"
Both of them saluted their commanding officer. "Yes sir!"
Albert then unholstered his own S.T.A.R.S handgun and clicked on the flashlight. "I will go alone." And so it begins.
Alpha Squad, with Rebecca following, then broke up into their teams.
Jill and Alex's POV
About twenty minutes later
Jill and Alex found themselves going up a flight of stairs to the 5th floor of the mansion.
Both of them had their flashlights on and were looking on for any sort of trouble.
Jill then stopped in her tracks.
Alex shot her a confused look and lowered his Samurai Edge to the floor. "Why'd you stop?"
Jill then turned to him with a serious look in her blue eyes. She then cupped his face in her hands looking him over for any signs of cuts or bruises. She felt herself blush a bit as her hands made contact with his face but ignored both the sudden rise of her heartbeat and the flush of blood to her cheeks. Keep yourself in check. He's married to your best friend. "Are…you sure that you are okay?"
Alex flashed her a toothy smile and rested his hands on hers. "I promise you I'm fine Jill. It was just a flashback."
Jill raised an eyebrow and frowned. She didn't believe him one minute but decided to let it go for now. The two of them had a mission to complete after all. Her tone was stern but also sweet at the same time. She felt responsible for her partner's safety. She felt she needed to protect him at all costs. Both for Allison's sake and for her own concerns as his partner. "Alright then but you promise me that if anything changes…you let me know alright?"
Alex gave her a serious nod. "Cross my heart and hope to die."
Jill then switched her focus to taking point.
Alex followed behind her.
Everything seemed awfully quiet in the mansion.
She didn't like it one bit. "I don't like this. This place is way too quiet. Be on your guard."
The two then heard what sounded like loud moans emanating from a door in the hallway adjacent to the one down the hall from them.
Jill quieted her approach, choosing to take her potential opponent by surprise. She reasoned that with her Samurai Edge, she had the upper hand in range over her potential attacker. She aimed the pistol ahead of her, ready to shoot it if need be. She spotted what looked like a hand grasping the walls of the hallway adjacent to their position. The skin on it looked rotted to the core and green in color.
Jill squinted her eyes to get a good look at it. What the hell?
Soon the full figure had come into view. He was a rather tall man in what looked like laymans clothes. The skin on his body looked rotten and as if were going to fall off. His jaw hung precariously on its left side threatening to fall off. There were a few teeth missing. His clothes were in tatters as if he had been fighting a wild animal of some kind. He was also barefoot. He moved slowly, taking cautious step by cautious step towards the young officer. His gait was extremely off as his right foot seemed to be dragging itself sideways behind his left.
Jill then heard Alex shout. "Uh Jill! I think we have company!" He then pointed his Samurai Edge at the two zombies slowly approaching him.
The two S.T.A.R.S. officers were now literally back to back, surrounded by their undead foes.
Jill cursed. "Shit!" She then relied on her training and pointed her Samurai Edge at the zombie approaching her. "Freeze! RCPD!"
The zombie, however, ignored her command and kept slowly walking towards her.
Jill shouted the command again this time with more authority in her voice. "Freeze! RCPD! I won't say it again!"
The zombie again ignored her command and let out a loud unintelligible moan in response.
Alex then turned to Jill. "I don't think they are responding to our commands! We have to shoot them!"
Jill grunted in frustration. "I..damn it...I think you are right!"
The two then took aim at their undead attackers.
Alex quickly managed to shoot his two assailants with two clean headshots.
Jill managed the same with her target.
The three zombies soon fell to the ground dead.
The two S.T.A.R.S officers then took in deep breaths.
Alex cursed."Fucking hell! What the hell was all that?"
Jill shook her head. "I..don't know. I tried to get that man to stop and he…couldn't hear me."
Alex just sighed, shaking his head. He then walked over to the man he had shot and knelt down to study him. "This man...looks as if he has been experimented on somehow."
Jill turned to her partner confused. "How do you figure that?"
Alex stared down at the undead man. "Just look at him. His skin is literally peeling itself off and rotting away. His jaw is barely holding on. There's no color in his eyes." Jill kneeled down and studied the corpse. "You're right. What could have happened to him?"
Alex shook his head. "Dunno. Whatever it was couldn't have been good."
He then got up to his feet. "C'mon we need to get moving."
Jill gave him a nod in agreement.
The two then began searching hallway by hallway looking for any evidence of their comrades.
As they kicked on one door, they came across what looked like ammunition, two medkits, and two shotguns hanging on the wall. Alex instantly noticed what type they were. "I don't believe it. Two Gamas 12 gauge shotguns. What the hell are they doing out here? I thought they didn't manufacture them out of Amarillo."
He then took one of the guns off and cocked the charging handle. "Whoever owns this mansion must hold a fortune. These ain't cheap." He then grabbed the second shotgun and tossed it at Jill with just one hand. "Here catch. It's a twelve gauge. Guaranteed to knock even the toughest of beasts on their ass. It also fires Dragon's Breath. Though I doubt we'll ever find ammunition like that around here."
She caught it in her hands and stared at it, looking it over. "You sure know a lot about guns."
Alex then turned to her with a shrug as he pumped the shotgun again discharging a round. "I grew up in Texas. It's sort of a requirement." He then took the extra shells and stuffed them in his pouches.
She just nodded. "I think we should take some of these medkits as well. We never know when we may need them." She then grabbed the medkits and stuffed them in her pouches.
Alex nodded. "Good thinking."
The two then walked out of the room only to see a number of undead zombies slowly walking towards them.
Alex just stared ahead and pumped the charging handle. "Time to lock and load." The two then began shooting their way through the lumbering army of zombies.
Chris and Rebecca's POV
Chris and Rebecca were trying to search for any sort of survivors two floors above Jill and Alex. "So answer something for me Rebecca."
The tomboyish looking girl glanced at him smiling. "Uh what's up?" "How did you manage to escape this place? Moreover what was Bravo Squad doing here in the first place?"
Rebecca paused a bit before answering. "We..were tracking down a fugitive near here. A man by the name of Billy Coen. He was…" She paused for a moment. She wondered if she should tell Chris about Billy Coen and their adventure in the secret Umbrella facility and decided against it. 'We then moved on to the mansion and…" the young brunette sighed. "That's where things went haywire. Our helicopter crashed and we had tracked him to a nearby train. There's a lot more there but that's the gist of it."
Chris just gave her a shrug and rested a hand on her shoulder. "I see. Well we will find Enrico and the others. No need to worry."
Rebecca nodded with a smile. "Thank you. I appreciate the help." She then turned away with a somber look in her eyes. Enrico. Edward. Richard. Kenneth. Forest. I hope you are all safe.
Chris's radio went off. "This is Chris."
He then heard Jill's panicked voice over the radio static. "Chris…I know you are probably going to say I've lost it but….there are undead zombies chasing Alex and I right now."
Chris, thinking she was just joking to pass the time, just laughed. "Jill…Come on…I think you've been watching too many of those zombie flicks."
A bunch of undead then making their way through down the hall.
Chris's eyes widened as he saw them. "What the fuck?"
He and Rebecca then raised their sidearms at the looming group of zombies, both shouting orders at them. "Freeze! RCPD!"
The zombies ignored them and continued walking menacingly towards the two.
Rebecca then felt her hands shake, making her grip on her pistol shaky, "W-What do we do Chris? They aren't stopping!"
Chris grunted. "We have to shoot them! We have no choice! Fire!"
The two then fired round after round at the zombies approaching them. They then aimed for the head and started shooting. Three of the zombies went down. Another three went down later in seconds. What looked like a row of more came out.
Chris cursed under his breath. "Shit! More of them!" He and Rebecca then started to back up as they continued to fire at the looming group of zombies approaching them. "We need to fall back Rebecca! Follow me!" He then rushed up the stairs.
Rebecca followed close behind.
They then rushed down the hall. Rows of doors had passed them until he managed to find one with enough distance between them and kick it in. "Get in!"
Rebecca nodded and followed him.
As soon as she was in the room, Chris closed the door very gently so as to not alert the zombies to their presence. He then rushed over to Rebecca and put a hand on her shoulders. "You alright there Rebecca?"
The brunette gave him a affirmative nod. "Yes. I'll be fine Chris. I just need to catch my breath."
Chris gave her a nod and then activated his radio. "Jill! Jill! Are you there?"
Jill and Alex's POV
Jill let out a sigh of relief. "Chris! Thank God! What happened?"
Chris's voice came across a little scrambled due to the distance between them. "We got chased by these actual fucking zombies! Like straight out of a Romero flick! We tried to get them to stop but were forced to shoot them! We weren't fans of being zombie chow so we're hunkering out in some room."
Jill nodded. "Okay. What floor are you and Rebecca on? Alex and I will come to you."
Chris and Rebecca's POV
Chris just shook his head. "No! Stay where you are! The last thing either of us needs is to have to pull one of us out of harm's way! Stay vigilant and just keep in touch! I'll notify you when its safe to link up!"
Jill and Alexander's POV
Jill let out a frustrated sigh. She wanted to save her friend and comrade but knew he had a point. Neither her nor Alex had enough ammunition or medkits to take on a mindless army of undead zombies right now! Sure…she wasn't a bad shot. Neither was Alex but that wasn't the problem. The fact remained that the two of them would be dead before they even reached their comrades. "Alright…but just promise me you will be careful. Don't go being a hero. I've got a feeling you won't get a commendation this time."
Chris and Rebecca's POV
Chris let out a wry chuckle. "Heh. Fat chance of that Jill. I'm still looking forward to that pension twenty years from now." He then took his Samurai Edge, reloaded it with another clip and cocked it back the handle. He then turned to Rebecca. "Hey Rebecca! You see that shotgun on the wall? Grab it and hand it to me."
Rebecca turned to him with widened eyes and then to the wall. "Got it." She then tossed the shotgun at Chris, who caught it in one hand.
This is a pump action shotgun. Hmm neat. He then holstered it. "Any shotgun cartridges in those cabinets?"
Rebecca nodded. "Yeah about two boxes."
Chris then holstered his Samurai Edge with one hand, put a cigarette in his mouth with it, and lit it with that same hand. "Hold on to those for me! I..got a feeling we're going to need 'em." He then activated his radio and took a drag of his cigarette. "You still there Jill?"
Jill and Alex's POV
Jill answered quickly. "Yes. I'm here."
Chris's voice came over the radio. "Stay safe. Ferraria? You there?"
Alex then activated his radio as he began reloading his shotgun. "I'm here. What's up Chris?"
Chris's voice came over the radio. "Take care of Jill for me eh? I've still got to get my twenty dollar bet back." \
Jill, who was also reloading her shotgun, rolled her eyes. "Really Chris? You and I are being chased by undead zombies and you bring that up."
Alex met her eyes for a moment and smiled, shaking his head. "I've got her back. No worries. Be careful hermano."
He could hear Chris chuckle over the radio. "Will do hermano."
Jill just sighed with a blush present on her face. That damn smile. That damn smile. Why does he have to be with Alison? She then peered her head over the corner. The hallways seemed to be quiet...for now. "Alex! I think we are in the clear!"
Alex then pumped his shotgun. "Good. Good. We need to continue searching for Bravo Team." He and Jill then walked out with shotguns at the ready.
Command Center
Somewhere beneath the Mansion
Albert Wesker studiously monitored the cameras in front of him. "Good. Good. The cameras will record their performance as scheduled. Everything is going as planned. He then imputed a code of some kind. A loud robotic voice spoke out of the computer.
"Activating control for Lickers. Standby."
I know this one was a little short but there is more coming!
I just wanted to introduce the Mansion!
