Chapter Two - The Opposing Side

Henry took a seat in his black leather office chair, swivelling it to the left as he sunk into the seat situated before his desk. His forearms laid across the desk as his fingers fiddled with the edges of his laptop. He sighed and tapped the table lightly as he sat back in his seat, his mind spinning with endless questions, none he could ever establish the answers to.

'Just watch it' Henry's head snapped to the right of him, it was the first time he had become aware that someone was standing watching him. He cleared his throat and blinked a little quicker before mustering the words to answer.

'It's not that simple, Jase,' he sighed. Jason pushed his body off the wall and walked towards his dad.

'Of course it is, you want to watch Daisy release the statement about the divorce, so watch it. If you didn't want to watch it you wouldn't be sitting here ready to open your laptop' he raised an eyebrow. Henry let out a puff of air as he tried to think of some reason, any reason not to watch it. However because it hurts isn't an excuse he felt he could feed his fourteen year old son, so silence filled the space between them.

'See, just watch it dad' he shrugged.

'I want to watch it, I think. Watch it with me?' Came the almost silent ask from Alison. Both of the men turned to face her, she stood in the doorway, head hung low as she fiddled with her fingers. Henry's heart shattered instantly every time he looked at her lately, out of all the kids she had taken the news of the separation the hardest.

'You sure noodle?' He asked softly, his arms opening wide to catch her. She slumped forward and fell into his arms, climbing onto his lap and nestling down in his shoulder, like a small hurt child. Henry kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back as she nodded into his chest. He felt her head move against his shirt and inwardly sighed, he really wished she wouldn't watch it, how he thought he could shield the kids from this was beyond him, but he also didn't want to watch Ali fall apart before him once again.

'Let's go and sit in the room then, at least make ourselves comfy' the stillness in his voice added to the already tense atmosphere. Jason nodded and silently agreed to join them. Alison shifted from his lap and led the way into the lounge, she grabbed the remote and flicked on TV finding the right channel for the live link to the conference. Henry sat between the kids and placed his arms In his lap, his body too heavy to hold them.

'I wish Stevie were here' Ali whispered whilst they sat and waited. Henry closed his eyes, the hurt and pain creeping in once again, his mind flashing back to a moment with Elizabeth, a moment where he realised he might just have been wrong…'Divorce means creating a broken family Henry, I am not sure I can cope with that.' The sorrow dripped from every word as the tears streamed down her cheeks. He remembered glancing down to his feet, unable to glance at her broken self anymore, swallowing hard before answering her 'This family is already broken Elizabeth.' In that moment he realised she was right, they hadn't just broken their relationship, but they tore their family apart. Quite literally torn apart as he sat with the youngest two in their old farm house, whilst Stevie remained in DC alone, and Elizabeth sat on a plane flying from one place to the next, never settling anywhere for too long.

'Well Stevie didn't want to be here' Jason snapped, shaking Henry from his thoughts.

'That's enough.' He warned, his harsh fatherly glare homing in on him.

'What it's true? She didn't want to. She's rather stay with her boyfriend in DC than with her family'

'She is with family you idiot, she is with mom' Ali argued. Henry closed his eyes and tilted his head back as the bickering between them began, the constant back and forth became his norm just lately.

'Oh really, mom? Like she cares about Stevie, they hate one another.'

'Don't speak about mom like that, you're just mad at her because you couldn't stay in DC' Alison barked back at Jason

'No, I hate her'

'Don't!' Henry snapped, his entire body turning to face Jason. 'Don't you ever talk about your mother like that. She has done nothing wrong' His tone was harsh, and firm as his eyes fixed in a hardened stare upon Jasons. Feeling slightly intimidated by his fathers gaze Jason glanced away and looked down to his lap. 'I am serious Jason, do not ever let me hear you talking about your mother like that again, she's the innocent party here' Jason silently nodded at his fathers words.

'It's on' Alison broke the tense moment apart as she turned up the volume, all three sat on tenterhooks ready to listen to Daisy's speech. Neither of the kids had heard the statement prior to this, but Henry had. He was in her office moments before the release…

Three Hours ago….

'Have we got time?' He asked as he stood before her desk, his voice soft and almost begging her.

'Time for what Henry? We've gone over and over this for the last three months, every single day. I can't do it anymore' she kept her voice and posture strong, treating it like a Shield of armour protecting her heart.

'I just…'

'Just what Henry? Just want us to keep trying? Just want us to give it more time to see if this is really what we want to say, or what needs to happen? Just give it another hour, another week? No Henry, when you came to me with those divorce papers you made your mind up then, you wanted the divorce, you're getting it. Now I agreed for the protection of the kids to announce this was a mutual decision between us both, do not come in here and push your luck trying to ask for more time. You made your bed, lay in it. Now if you're happy with the statement then close the door on your way out' The more she spoke the more irate she got, her voice climbing in pace and tone as the words tumbled from her mouth, one thing was very clear, she was being honest to herself, she truly couldn't do it anymore.

Her gaze averted Henrys, the look of her man torn down and defeated because of her and their relationship was something her eyes could no longer see, that version of him was already imprinted enough. A mixture of hurt, anger, confusion, upset and disappointment consumed her as she stood still at her desk, desperately willing to hear the office door close, but nothing. Henry remained in the room. He stood watching her, his own cocktail of emotions shaking up inside him, one minute filled with love and desire for her the next flooded with anger and confusion, both roads led him nowhere. His eyes closed as the memories of the divorce papers in his hand burned his memory, a fire that will never die out. It was supposed to be an ultimatum, a sort of 'this is the final option, are we really there?' moment, however as soon as those papers landed on her desk, her state department desk he knew instantly he hadn't given her an ultimatum, as he had no second option for her.

'Why are you still standing there?' She whispered through gritted teeth. Henry broke from his thoughts and shook his head. Embarrassment from his actions and anger at her intolerance of his presence crept in and he fled with a slamming of the office door. A sound that had become so familiar to him.

'Unfortunately Dr McCord and I are filing for a Divorce. I ask that you all respect our privacy during this increasingly difficult and distressing time for our family. Thank you' Hearing the confirmation from Daisy, and the weight of Alison crashing into his side somehow confirmed that this was really happening. He slowly moved his arm and wrapped it around her tiny frame, holding her while she sobbed into him, repeatedly begging him to fix it. Jason stood and left them swiftly, unwilling to share his emotions.

'Jase' Henry called out after him but it was no use. Henry's head dropped with a sharp movement as he looked down at Alison in his lap.

'Please dad, fix it' she sobbed and sobbed, his grey t-shirt turning a darker shade from the sheer volume of her tears. Henry choked on his words, the emotion laying thick in his throat as he looked down at her

'I don't think it's fixable Noodle'
