Amy had laid their in Ty's arms for a few hours just listening to music. She had finally decided to head back to the house. She decided to give Ty some space. She imagined that wasn't how he wanted that to go. If she was being honest that was about how she expected it. After all she had seen family dinners blow up worse then that. Lou could be so much like Tim. Everything she said was such a Tim thing to say. Jack had already gone to bed so she didn't have to face anyone. She gathered up the college magazines that were spread across her floor from their makeout session the other day. She hadn't cleaned them up yet. Grabbing the last one that sat open she paused looking at it. It was from the University of Calgary. Flipping through it she noticed Ty had circled the mechanic course. She leaned back against her bed. She thought back to what Ty had said about missing her graduation. She had been so focused on getting out of school and working with horses full time. Spending the summer with Caleb on the rodeo circuit. She hadn't given college or anything else a second thought. By now she imagined she'd be living with Caleb at their own ranch. Married to Caleb and working with horses. Problem was Ty had derailed all those plans, in a good way of course. But what Lou had said at the dinner table really hit her. Bringing up marriage and a family. She hadn't even thought about that. Not since Caleb. She was only 20 years old. But yet why was marrying Caleb okay. She closed the magazine and threw it across the room. She set her head back against the bed. What was she so afraid of.
Lou and Peter left a few days ago. Lou had apologized for her behavior and promised to stay out of it. Ty had been more forgiving then Amy would have been in his position. But that was Ty. Always willing to see the best on people. It had gotten in trouble a few times. But she loved it anyway. After all it was his persistence that finally got her to fall in love with him. She was proud of him for his choices the last year to turn his life around was amazing. Problem was with all these life decisions hanging in the air it started to make her question some of her choices. She gathered Ty's college magazines in her hand and headed for the barn loft. She figured it was time she returned them. Climbing the stairs she thought back to the first time she had ever done that. It was a few nights Ty had first arrived. She woke him in the middle of the night to help her get Spartan in the trailer. He had been so angry with her for waking him up. She remembered him climbing out of bed anyway. Him standing there in front of her in just his boxes. She felt her cheeks flush like they did then. She set the magazines down on his dresser. She laughed at how messy his room was. Like it always was when he first moved up here. She let her mind wonder back to a few other defining moments in that first 8 months together while Ty was doing his probation. She smiled at the memories. He was just as broken as she was. In a way they had healed each other. Shown the other it was okay to let people in. She believed they were both better for it.
Ty suddenly wrapped his arms around Amy having crept up on her. Amy let out a shriek and giggled as Ty picked her up off the ground. Amy's laugh filling the loft as she leaned into Ty's grasp.
"That was so not nice." She said turning in his arms when he set her back down. He couldn't stop the laugh that escaped.
"Sorry." He said a huge smile on his face.
Amy smiled back. It was contagious. It always had been. No matter how upset she was she couldn't stay mad at seeing his warm smile. "I have an idea. Do you trust me?" She asked with a devious smile.
Ty cocked his face. "I guess so. But after I just scared you I'm not so sure I should."
Amy laughed again. "I promise not to scare you." She turned and walked toward the stairs. "Today." She added glancing over her shoulder at him.
Ty ran across the room to try to catch her. Amy made him feel like a child. He knew his mom was right. He wasn't going to find anyone more suited to him then her. Not that he wanted anyone else.
Amy and Ty rode hand in hand through the field until they reached a little clearing. Ty slowed his horse as he looked over at Amy who had dropped his hand and stopped her horse. "Do you remember making this for me?" She asked.
"Of course." He looked out over the jumping course he had made for her.
"I still come out here once and awhile." She said softly.
"It's still here." He asked more as a question.
"Ty, I don't think I ever really thanked you for doing this for me. I was so focused on feeling like you didn't think I could get Spartan into the trailer."
"You did thought. And won the fall finale." She said.
"I can't believe you...I didn't realize this place meant this much to you."
"It meant a lot because it was all I had left of you."
"Oh, Amy. I'm so sorry."
"I didn't bring you out here to make you feel bad about leaving. I'm so over that. I wanted to jump with you."
"Wait?" Ty said as Amy nudged Spartan forward.
"Take it slow and go over the lower jumps." She shouted as she took off in a run preparing to jump one of the jumps.
Ty watched her in amazement. "Come on? I just barely know how to ride." He said not even sure his horse could jump.
"Don't be a scary cat." Amy yelled jumping another jump making it look so easy.
Ty nudged his horse forward. "Please don't drop me." He said to the horse causing Amy into a fit of giggles. Ty cleared the jump but almost fell off trying to regroup. "Holy crap!" He shouted.
"So?"
"That was insane!" Ty's face was so happy. "That's hard but so cool."
"Race ya?" She said racing by his to clear the next jump.
"Oh it's on, Fleming." He yelled doing his best to stay on as he jumped the rail behind Amy.
Amy and Ty walked into the house over an hour late for dinner surely going to catch it. Lisa was the first to say something as she caught sight of them. They were both covered in mud. "What happened to you two?" She asked concerned.
"It's a long story." Both trying to hid their laughter.
Jack had his hands across his chest as Amy came into the dining room. "A phone call would have been nice." He said.
"Sorry, Grandpa. Ty fell off near the stream. Apparently it's still a bit muddy to ride out there." She headed for the bathroom to take a quick shower.
"You fell off?" Tim said standing to look at Ty.
Ty pushed his muddy bangs out of his eyes. "You know what, I'll use the garden hose." He said walked back out the door.
"If he fell, why is Amy all mud?" Tim asked turning to Jack.
"I'm going to fix them both a plate." Lisa said hiding her laugh.
Tim was waiting outside the barn when Amy left after night check. He made her jump not seeing him leaning against the barn. "Honey." He asked grabbing her arm.
She could barely see his face in the night. "What's going on with you and Ty?" He pressed.
"Nothing why?" She asked unsure of where this was going.
"I just want to make sure you don't get too caught up in this."
"This?"
"Yeah, you and Ty. It's a fun little fling. But seriously he isn't your type and you are only gonna get your heart broke."
Amy was shocked. She thought her dad had come around to liking Ty. Or at least excepting him. Maybe he had just not for her. "Dad..."
"I just don't want him distracting you from what is important." He said kissing the top of her head before walking towards his truck. "I'll pick you up at 8 for practice." He shouted over his shoulder.
Amy leaned against the barn. She was angry but her dad had a point. She threw everything away for Caleb. Was she doing the same with Ty? She didn't think so. Heck, a few days ago she wasn't sure she was ready for the idea of spending the rest of her life with Ty. She watched her dad drive away. He came across a little too harsh but she had gotten his point. Instead of playing around with Ty risking getting hurt. She needed to take her jockey career seriously. Problem was she wasn't sure what she wanted anymore.
Jack pulled his old truck in front of the feed store. He had noticed Amy was a bit quiet lately. "Everything okay, honey?" He turned to face her.
"Yeah, why?" She asked undoing her seatbelt.
"No reason. Just seems like you got a lot on your mind." He touched her cheek giving her a smile.
"Maybe, I just don't know." She sighed. "When did everything sneak up on me?"
"How so?"
"Ty's graduation and what Lou said have really seem to stuck with me. Then at the track yesterday I just didn't feel it." She looked down at her lap.
"It's okay to be questioning things. Everyone does it." He reassured.
"I guess." She sighed looking out the window avoiding his gaze.
"What are you thinking?" He asked carefully.
"Honestly, I don't know."
They sat in the truck for a few minutes in silence before Jack gave her arm a reassuring squeeze. Amy nodded with a smile as they both exited the truck.
Ty crossed the street to meet them on his lunch break. "Hey, fancy running into you." He joked kissing Amy as he grabbed her hand.
Jack rolled his eyes. "You can't tell me the two of you didn't have this planned."
"Maybe." Ty grinned. He grabbed Amy's hand and entered Maggie's.
"I'm going to get the feed. Order me a ranch man's special."
"Okay." Amy said smiling back at him before turning to Ty. She leaned into his shoulder as they made their way toward the corner.
The waitress filled some water glasses and rushed them to a nearby table. A man a few years older then Ty shoved his way toward them at the counter. Clearly not liking how no one took his order.
Amy glanced at Jack as he struggled with the mineral powder and something he had picked up. "I'll be right back." She said to Ty leaving the counter to help Jack. Amy barley made it to Jack when a loud crash behind her sent her spinning around to look at where she had left Ty. The man who was clearly irritated appeared to have knocked all the items off the counter onto the floor.
"Nobody move!" He shouted suddenly pulling out a gun.
