"What if this is my fault cause I let her borrow my truck?" Ty asked tears coming to his eyes. "I mean it was my fault we got into the car accident last year."
"It wasn't your fault. And my truck is just about as old. There's nothing we can do now until this weather lets up. She's smart. She'll know how to stay safe."
Ty swallowed hard. "I just, I just love her so much. I can't imagine her not being apart of my life." He closed his eyes angry at himself for leaving all those years ago. For being such a stubborn ass when he got back. He opened his eyes again at Jack's touch.
"Amy, loves you too. I can see the way she looks at you. She feels the same." He said as if reading his thoughts. "She had to learn to live without thought. It nearly broke her heart." Jack said sadly remembering how angry, moody and depressed Amy was after discovering Ty had abandoned her. "For what it's worth, I missed you too."
Neither had talked about his decision but he knew he disappointed a lot of people. Including himself when his father had turned out to be the exact same jerk he always was. "Thanks, Jack. That means a lot. I'm sorry for leaving." He said quietly.
"You don't need to be sorry. Your prohibition was up. You had ever right to go home."
"I want you to know I won't ever do that again. I'm here to stay." He said firmly and with confidence.
Jack smiled. "Good. Cause if you hurt Amy again, well I have 600 acres." He winked.
Amy had managed to pull the truck over to the side of the road. She wasn't sure it was safe to drive in this driving rain. It was coming down in sheets. The wind was shaking the truck. She couldn't even make out any street signs or landmarks to show her how close she was to home. She tightened her grip on the wheel feeling the nerves come flooding back which was why she pulled over the first time. This storm all too familiar to the one that got her and Ty hurt. She remembered her phone as she undid her seatbelt sliding over to grab it. She had two missed called from her dad as well as a text. Jack had called her twice as well but hasn't left a message. Ty had left numerous calls and texts. Each one more panicked then the last. She felt guilty she hadn't heard any of them over the wind and rain. She dialed Ty's number but her phone wouldn't connect. She threw her phone aside as she put her head back against the seat. She'd just have to wait it out. Or hope for the phone to go through.
Jack glanced over at Ty for the hundredth time. He had his phone in a death grip willing it to ring. He was staring into space. "Ty, she's going to be okay." Jack said touching his shoulder as he came to sit next to him. The dark cellar not exactly the most inviting place. The cobwebs on the walls an obvious sign to the lack of use the space got. There was old jars filled with jams and fruit from 40 years ago. It was like living in a horror movie.
Ty jumped at Jack's touch. "What?"
"She's strong. Because she had to be."
"This isn't exactly something she can control. It's a storm."
"Just because we can't get through to her doesn't mean she didn't turn back and go to Lisa's." Jack was trying to sound positive.
"I, um, well, there's something I wanna ask." Ty stammered making eye contact for the first time.
"Yeah?"
"I, um..."
"Just tell me. It can't be that bad." Jack joked.
"It's not bad. I just don't...well I'm not exactly who you envisioned for Amy. But I love her." He was lacking his earlier confidence.
"I don't think there is ever right or wrong. Just love. And when that love runs as deeply as yours does. Well there's no denying that two people aren't meant to be."
"I don't take her love for granted. I know she is pretty special and could have anyone she wants."
"Ty, I'm not Tim. I value the fact that you turned your life around and have never once showed me that you aren't capable of staying on the right path. We all fall through the cracks from time to time. It's what we do about it that matters." He smiled before standing up and going back to the candles he was arranging around the room.
Amy's phone beeped the call signaling no bars. She tossed her phone down again and leaned her head against the steering wheel. Everyone would be so worried about her. It wasn't calming her nerves. She lifted her head at the sound of gravel and the headlights beaming through the rain. She watched as it passed her truck and then pulled over in front of her. She let out a sigh of relief. She unlocked the door as her father made his way to the passenger side knocking on the window. "What are you doing out here?" He asked his voice annoyed yet laced with concern.
"I got too nervous to drive." She said as he slid into the seat next to her.
"Honey, it's not safe out here."
"I'm a big girl. I can wait out the storm myself." She crossed her arms.
"Where were you coming from?"
"Lisa's. Guess I should have stayed." She sighed.
"Sweetheart, I know your mad at me and I don't blame you."
"You don't blame me?" Amy glared at him.
"I'm sorry. Okay? I messed up. I was just..."
"I told you I would come meet this guy. But on my terms. I don't know why you were in such a rush anyway. I told you I would finish the season."
"You know how I get."
"Unfortunately." She said crossing her arms again. "Where did you think this guy was a good fit?"
"He rode great in a practice run. I don't know what happned. But I am sorry. You know I didn't mean anything by it?"
Amy looked over at him. "You lied."
Tim sighed nodding. "I was just worried I wouldn't find anyone as good as you."
"That's no excuse, Dad. Storm could have gotten hurt or hurt someone else. This guy is a jerk who doesn't care about horses."
"He quit."
"Please, let me find someone." Amy begged.
"Only if you start talking to me again." Tim gave a half smile.
Amy nodded. "I'm glad your here." She leaned over and hugged him. "Can you drive me home?"
"Of course." He wrapped his arm around her. "You never did like a thunderstorm." He smiled at the memory.
Ty's knee was bobbing up and down like a junky craving his next fix. Jack let out a small smile. The poor guy was surely to explode if he didn't get out of here to search for Amy. He glanced out the small opening on the wooden door. Realizing the storm was basically over except the rain was still coming down. "I'm gonna check on the horses." He spoke breaking the silence.
Ty stopped bounced and turned so fast he surely got whiplash. "Really?"
His question seeming like Jack was positively crazy for going outside. But he knew it was more of 'we're allowed outside? "Yes. You can take my truck. I'll stay here in case she comes home."
Ty jumped up, Jack barely had the door open to climb out of the cellar and Ty was already on his heels. "Amy!"
Jack was nearly run over as Ty stepped around him and ran toward the drive. Tim's truck was pulling up to the barn. Amy jumped out of the truck before Tim was parked. Jack smiled as he watched the young couple. Ty met Amy in the middle of the driveway. He flung his arms around her pulling her in as he picked her up. Spinning her around he buried his face into her shoulder.
"Ty!" Amy shouted clearly missing him just as much as Ty had.
Tim stepped around the truck to get eye contact with Jack. Jack nodded slightly and instead headed toward the house needing to call Lisa.
"I was so freaked out." Ty said the first to talk after they broke apart.
"I love you so much." She said kissing Ty instead of talking. They were both just happy each other was okay.
