Notes: Hello guys. I am so sorry for updating very late. I had some stuff going on and did not have time to complete the chapter. But I am back with a new chapter. This chapter contains the battle scene and I have to admit, it was not easy to write. I tried my best to envision what I had imagined through my writing. If that was not enough, I apologize in advance and ask for your understanding.
I also got many reviews pointing out that only dragon lords can ride a dragon and that Tyrion and Missandei cannot become their riders. Tyrion and Missandei are not riders in the sense that they can connect with Rhaegal and Viserion. No, they can't. That's why Daenerys taught Tyrion some Valyrian commands the dragons can understand in order to fly. And Daenerys can also reach the three of them at the same time. She only asked Missandei and Tyrion to ride on her dragons because they can safely escape the battle when she was busy otherwise and when she is not there to command them. That is what I thought when I was writing that chapter. This is my logic. If you don't like it, there is nothing I can do. That is all for this matter.
Now enjoy this chapter!
Chapter 13
The Battle
Daenerys was standing on a hilltop with Drogon, Tyrion, Missandei, Viserion, and Rhaegal, looking at the battlefield. The trenches were done, the wildfire were also buried, and everything was set. They were all waiting for the dead to arrive with bated breath.
She turned to Tyrion and Missandei and said, "Please keep them safe. Just ask them to fly away if any of the White Walkers decide to harm them. I don't want them participating in the battle without proper riders. I will take care of the wildfire. Drogon is the only one capable of lighting the wildfire from that distance. Just watch the flanks, Lord Bran, and be safe."
"Yes, your grace."
"Now let's get this over with."
She climbed on Drogon and took off into the sky.
She could see Tyrion and Rhaegal on their way to Bran and Viserion to the left, far away from the front lines.
The army of the dead came into view, and she was still taken aback by the number of wights, although she had seen this sight before. Once they reached the trenches, she lit them on fire from a safe distance, then flew back into the dark sky, where Drogon's black scales would provide perfect cover. The white walkers and the Night King are on the back lines, so she doesn't have to worry about being hit by ice spears for the time being.
She saw the wights trying to climb over the trenches and burning in the process. But this time it took them some time before they crossed into the space between the trenches. Daenerys waited for some time and watched the wights reach the second trench. Then she rained down fire on the wights hoping to light the wildfire. But nothing happened at all. The wights reached the second trench, but the wildfire still did not activate. Daenerys started panicking. They depended on the wildfire heavily, but it is not working. What is she going to do? She was agonising over what to do when her vision filled with green flames. She looked down to see the wildfire bursting one after another taking down a large number of wights.
She sighed in relief and moved on to the next trench, only to find it in flames too. The wildfire spread to the trenches and lit them on fire too. The wights were not able to climb out of the trenches. As soon as they went anywhere near the trenches, the wildfire disintegrated them, making them unable to clear the path like they did to the first trench and in her vision. It also took a long time for the green flames to go out.
This strategy took out more wights than they thought, and Daenerys was glad to see that it worked this well. The wildfire was buried in the snow, and it must have taken some time to melt it for it to activate. Once the remaining wights reached the second wildfire zone, she didn't hesitate to burn them at all. Even the giant wight was not able to escape the flames. It looks like Lady Mormont will be able to avoid her fate this time. But Daenerys did not have time to leisurely watch the battle. She will be the target of the White Walkers from now on, and she needs to focus.
The commanders ordered the soldiers to get ready to face the dead. The wildfire ran out, and Daenerys was very glad to see the outcome of the strategy. The living had more numbers than the dead, and that fact definitely showed in the war cries of her troops. The moment the dead crossed the last trench, dragon glass arrows flew out and started destroying the remaining wights without hesitation. Daenerys took her place again on the hilltop and watched the battle. She didn't want to give the white walkers or the Night King any opportunities to attack her or Drogon.
Even though they destroyed a lot of wights using their defence strategy, the army of the dead was nowhere near extinction. The white walkers had no choice but to participate in the battle, unlike in her vision. She turned towards the Godswood to see the situation there, only to find everything eerily calm. She thought the Night King would definitely start moving towards Bran. Maybe he changed his decision after seeing the outcome of the battle. Or is he waiting for something? Daenerys was again filled with anxiety. She doesn't know at all what will happen from now on. She took the necessary precautions, but that doesn't mean the Night King will just stand there and take the damage. He might have planned something, and Daenerys does not know what it is.
Maybe he is heading towards her children to take control of them, or maybe he is heading towards her. She does not know what to do. Panic filled her whole being, making her tremble. She needs to think before something irreversible happens. She needs to find out what is happening. Daenerys took off into the sky again to be safe from the ice spears.
She looked down from where she was and saw the battle in full swing. The troops launched their offensive, destroying as many wights and white walkers as they could. They were also setting fire to their dead comrades before they turned into one of the wights. She looked around to see Viserion burning wights on the flanks from a safe distance. She had a feeling that something bad was going to happen.
Daenerys reached out to Viserion and asked him to fly away from there. She wanted him to head south and away from the Night King. She sighed in relief when he obeyed her and flew away. Now all that was left was to find the Night King and figure out a plan to lure him out.
She found the Night King right at the back, with some white walkers heading towards where Viserion was. All Daenerys could do then was cry in relief. Viserion was no longer there, and he was safe for the time being. The Night King also realised that and changed his direction toward Godswood. He must have realised his position now. He has no advantage now. His overwhelming army was now reduced to dust, and there was nothing to gain even if he raised the dead other than the bodies in the crypt. From above, the battlefield looked really messy, and Daenerys kept her eyes on the Night King and his white walkers. Jon and the other Northern soldiers stood in the way to Godswood, ready to face the enemy. Ser Jorah joined them against the Night King. Swords and spears clashed, and Daenerys started getting anxious. What if Ser Jorah dies here? She needs to interfere in this battle. She cannot afford to lose him again.
Daenerys flew towards them without worrying about the ice spears and ordered Drogon to rain down fire on the white walkers. She doesn't care if they didn't burn; all she needs to do is divert their attention away from Ser Jorah and Jon, giving them an advantage. She may not trust Jon, but he is still her nephew. But to her surprise, the White Walkers took some damage from the fire, making it easy for the soldiers to kill them. It looks like the Night King is the only one who is immune to fire.
After knowing this, there is no reason for her to hesitate. She started burning down White Walkers before they started aiming for her. It took her some time to burn them, but she made sure to finish the job. The wights under the white walkers she burned started falling too. This battle is overwhelmingly on their side now, and Daenerys couldn't be more proud. She took the job of taking out the White Walkers and left the Night King to Jon.
Daenerys saw the battle between the Night King and Jon from high up after taking out most of the walkers. Even though Jon had Valyrian steel, it proved a little difficult for him to defeat the Night King. But he didn't give up. When the Night King raised the dead, the nearby soldiers took care of them. There was no need for Jon to be distracted from their fight. Their fight dragged on for some time, and Daenerys tried to provide support by attacking the Night King, which didn't work at all. He just stood there after her attack with his smug smile, which irritated her to no end. Daenerys didn't want to jeopardise her safety, so she flew away from his ice spears, leaving Jon and the others to fight him.
Arya defeated the Night King in her vision, but now it looked like Jon would be the one to kill the Night King. If Jon did that, it would make her life easier. He will gain more influence over the Northern lords, and Sansa's hold on them will decrease. Somewhere in the middle of the fight, Jon gained another sword and started pushing the Night King back.
Their swords clashed with great force, and even Daenerys could see that Jon was winning. Jon impaled the Night King on his chest with the Valyrian sword, and the Night King shattered into pieces, taking the remaining White Walkers and the wights with him. Jon fainted from exhaustion right there in the middle of the snow field after his fight.
The battle was over. Things are so different now. Daenerys is the queen of the seven kingdoms. The night king was defeated, and she did not lose Viserion. She did not lose Ser Jorah. Rhaegal was not hurt. Most of her soldiers are alive. She did not lose her Dothraki or Unsullied in vain. Missandei, Grey Worm, Qhono, and the others are also safe. And Daenerys was so glad that she changed things. She was so happy to see the outcome. Now all she had to do was concentrate on bettering the kingdoms she conquered.
But before that, she had to deal with the Northern Lords and the legitimacy issue with Jon. She will take care of that when Sansa makes her move. She was certain Jon would reveal his mother's identity to his family. She was also very sure that Sansa would try to have Jon sit on the throne so she could become Queen of the North. She was quite surprised to see that Jon still did not know about his parents. She thought that Samwell Tarly and Bran Stark would have told him by now. Well, she will know when that happens anyway.
Now she will concentrate on the aftermath of the battle. She confirmed that Viserion and Rhaegal were not hurt. She explained to Tyrion and Missandei why her children suddenly flew away from the battlefield and then asked Tyrion to join the commanders in the cleaning process. Missandei also left with Tyrion to translate wherever needed. Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal went to hunt and rest. Daenerys made her way towards the castle to help with the cleaning process too.
The celebratory feast was held that night, just like before. Daenerys was again in the middle of the high table. Tyrion joined his brother; Missandei was with Grey Worm and the Unsullied, enjoying the feast. Ser Jorah went to talk with the people of Bear Island. The Dothraki were with the free folk, and now that Daenerys thinks about it, they have many common traits. Daenerys was happy that her people were enjoying themselves. Jon was sitting at the high table at the end, contemplating something. He looked very serious. It looked like he was informed of his true identity. Daenerys was curious about what Jon would do now. She saw him leave the table after some time.
Only Sansa and Bran remained at the high table. Daenerys did not even try to start a conversation. She just sat there eating her food and observing the surroundings. Daenerys wanted this peace to continue, but Sansa had other plans. Sansa started talking to her.
"Your grace, can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead, Lady Sansa." Daenerys answered, trying not to show her exasperation.
"Are you going to marry my brother?"
Daenerys was shocked by that question. She had to visibly control her shock before answering. But from the expression Sansa was wearing, she can tell that her shock worked in her favour.
"No, I am not. Why are you asking Lady Sansa?"
"What about the heir to the kingdom, your grace?"
"What are you trying to do here, Lady Sansa? Do you want me to marry your brother?"
"I thought you two would make a good match. That is all, your grace."
Daenerys understood what Sansa was trying to do. Now that Sansa has seen her power, she believes she will force Jon to marry Daenerys so she can reclaim the North without difficulty.
"You think that I am going to hand over the kingdom to your brother if I marry him, don't you, Lady Sansa?" She saw Sansa's face change from forced innocence to realisation. Smiling, Daenerys continued, "I wouldn't bet on that if I were you. Will you hand over the results of your hard work to some man just because you married him, Sansa?" She left out the title deliberately.
There was no answer.
"Why do you want the North to be independent? Because of the troubles they went through, and you want to protect them, or because you want to be queen? Why?"
Again, no answer.
"Lord Jon Snow was already chosen as the Warden of the North and was given the same privileges the North had before all the wars started. It also looked like you have the same privileges he does. You are practically ruling the North. Then why do you want to be the Queen of the North, Sansa?"
Sansa just looked at Daenerys. She said nothing.
"You don't want anyone above you, do you? You don't want to answer to anyone. Is that why? or you have a strong desire for power. You think power is the answer for everything, don't you? Just like Cersei did."
Sansa was angry.
"I am not Cersei. I am nothing like her."
"Is that what you are believing? All Cersei did was plot against people so that she could obtain power. What do you think you are doing now? You were plotting to marry your brother and me so that you could obtain power. You can justify yourself however you want, Sansa. But that doesn't mean that's the truth."
Sansa has nothing to say to that.
"I heard that you and your sister executed Little Finger. He was plotting to separate you and your sister by creating conflict between you two, wasn't he? What is the difference between his goals and yours? That you are doing this for a noble cause, and he is not? What happens when I don't agree to marry your brother? What will you do then? Or what will happen when you don't get what you want even if we marry? What will you do then?"
Sansa looked at her with wide eyes. Daenerys could see that she was coming to a realisation about where her thoughts were going. Daenerys smiled.
"I know what you went through. I did too. You have to go through a lot of pain to obtain the power to protect yourself and your loved ones in this world dominated by men. I agree. But that doesn't mean that you can do anything as long as it gets the result that you want. I will repeat what I said before. You may not trust anyone but yourself to protect you. And you'd be willing to go to any length for it. But if that harms the people I love and cherish, you wouldn't like what I do to protect them."
Sansa looked overwhelmed.
"Why are you saying all this to me if you know what I was trying to do? You could just pretend to play along and then betray me, can't you?"
"I could. I didn't, because I know what you went through. I was sold to Drogo in exchange for the army and was taken against my will at first. I had to learn to love that. There was no other choice for me. I may not know your whole circumstance, but I can at least understand the trauma. I did not want to see you go down that path. I am just warning you here. I will consider this my last warning. Choose wisely."
"Also, I thought I would offer you a position in my small council if you stopped trying to become the Queen in the North."
Daenerys turned to see Sansa's shocked face. She smiled at that and said, "You can reject, of course. But I want you to think and answer me before I start for King's Landing. I will leave you to it then."
Daenerys made her way to her chambers, very satisfied with the turn of events this time.
